Review

“First-rate urban crime … maybe a future classic.” ―Lee Child, New York Times Bestselling Author

“A remarkable debut, packed with vivid detail and a remarkable cast of characters, and told with a breathtaking confidence, The Friendship of Criminals is a throwback crime tale in the best possible way, a page-turner with the breadth and scope of an epic--one of those novels you tear through in one sitting and come up screaming for more. Robert Glinski is a star in the making.” ―Owen Laukkanen, author of The Professionals

“Robert Glinski's The Friendship of Criminals provides a fresh, original, and totally entertaining view of mob relations in today's world. These characters don't just sing -- they're doing high opera: real, funny, dangerous, smart, and always fascinating. The plot rocks, too. And you've got to admire Glinski's cojones in claiming Dennis Lehane, Elmore Leonard and John D. MacDonald as his writing instructors --that's setting a pretty high bar. What's more impressive it that this book reaches that standard. Great work, highly recommended.” ―John Lescroart, New York Times Bestselling author

“The Friendship of Criminals is the type of tremendously fun crime novel that gives bad guys a good name. A great read.” ―Chris Pavone, New York Times Bestselling author

Burian-Mohr FRIENDSHIP OF CRIMINALS is a tough book to synopsize... as witnessed by the Amazon synopsis. It does sizzle and crackle as promised, however. When Glinkski calls his book THE FRIENDSHIP OF CRIMINALS, he is not exaggerating. Every character in the book (with the possible exception of some offscreen employees and wives) is a criminal of one sort or another. You're not inviting any of these over for dinner or a witty conversation. But they are smart and calculating and analytical and insightful.Anton Bielakowski is the Polish crime boss of Port Richmond, which is a neighborhood in the River Wards section of Philadelphia. He is called the Butcher 1) because he's a butcher, with a butcher shop and 2) he sometimes kills his enemies using some of his handmade blood sausage. The Poles of Port Richmond are a tight-knit group and Bielakowski has protected them and survived for far more years than any crime boss' life expectancy.Meanwhile the Italian mob is in a state of flux. Raymond Rea has taken over when the former mob boss ends up in prison. Rea aspires to wipe out Bielakowski and expand his own drug enterprises.Added to the mix are Bielakowski's protege Sonny, who is his idea man, Sonny's son who's fallen out of rehab more times than Bielakowski has offed someone with sausage, Bielakowski's son who will one day inherit the empire, the son's new street-smart larcenous girlfriend, and an undercover agent who has infiltrated the Italian mob.A lot of characters to keep straight? Oh yes. But Glinski has it under control. All this being said, here are the Top Ten Things That Are Great About FRIENDSHIP OF CRIMINALS .10. Despite the fact that there are waaaaaay too many characters to keep straight, Glinksi re-introduces them enough times that, by the third chapter, you feel pretty comfortable sorting them out without the use of an Excel spread sheet.9. Mr. Glinksi is a former criminal defense attorney, which might explain how he is able to create the character of a total dirtbag slick high-paid attorney. He must have (ahem) met a few along the way.8. The plotting is impressive, and made me think of Mario Puzo's deft plotting skills.7. Multiple uses for blood sausage.6. The pacing, after the first few chapters, is relentless, with the plot-lines interweaving in remarkable ways.5. Character and dialogue. Glinski has created an intriguing cast of characters, all over-the-top bad guys in entirely different ways. Each character's dialogue is smart and clever and sounds perfectly natural for that individual. You can read a line on a page and know who is speaking without being told.4. A great chase scene.3. Despite all the harshness, there is a quirky love story and a touching plot-line about a father's love for his %^$&-up son.2. Three words: little blue pill.1. It really does "explode... off the page with the crackling intensity of Scorsese's THE DEPARTED." Yes, Amazon. You got that right.I look forward to Glinksi's next book but I won't be eating blood sausage any time soon.

By Sandy Kay I'm often cynical about jacket blurbs from established authors on a debut novel. Sometimes they just set me up for disappointment. This book has very positive jacket blurbs from Lee Child, Owen Laukkanen, John Lescroat and Chris Pavone. And it does not disappoint: it earned those raves and more.Nearly all the characters in this book are bad guys -- members or former members of organized crime families -- who have done very bad things. But the author created characters that are multidimensional and lets the reader see them as fathers and husbands and friends as well as seeing them as killers and thieves and drug dealers. And that is the beauty of this book. The story is set primarily in Philadelphia and covers what happens when the new leader of the Italian mob decides to expand his territory and starts making moves on the Polish mob. The reader gets the action from a number of viewpoints as the action goes back and forth among the various factions and characters. The writing and pacing is just excellent. I suspected I was going to be in for a treat when I read the acknowledgements section -- anyone who can make that section entertaining can write a book that will keep you turning the pages. I sometimes hesitate when I see that a new author used to be an attorney because the writing style used for motions and briefs does not translate well to fiction. But this guy does not write like a lawyer, he blends action and personality into scenes that will make you like his bad guys and keep turning the pages to find out what happens next.My ARC did not have anything noting the time frame of the story. In case the finished book also does not give the time frame, I believe from various plot points that the main part of the story takes place in late 1997/early 1998. I think it is important to know the time frame because I was thrown off a little when Sonny started working on one of his "ideas," because I had been assuming the story took place in the present and what he was asking didn't make sense in that context. If you loved The Sopranos, or if you just like well written and engaging crime novels, you should read this book. I will definitely read whatever else this author writes.

By Vital Spark Good dialogue, a plot that holds together, characters who are certainly dangerous criminals, but who have redeeming qualities also. Anton, the head of the Polish Mafia , is mainly interested in protecting his community from the Italians and wants nothing to do with drugs. Sonny, the ideas guy who was abandoned as a child, seeks the continuity of family and will never abandon his ne'er-do-well son. The denouement, involving the Poles, the Italians, and a very nasty-sounding motorcycle gang, brings the novel to a satisfactory conclusion. The author has a tendency to introduce us to a situation, then supply the background information by means of a flashback. I found this, together with the Polish names of characters as they are introduced to be a little confusing at times, and the first thing I did on finishing the novel, was to go back and skim the first five or six chapters. More my failing than the author's; all the plot elements are there and hold together perfectly.A good, solid debut. I will be looking out for Mr. Glinski's future work.
