Snyder If you know of someone going to France, just coming back, or yearns to go to Paris - this is the book for them. What a gem! I saw it today in a bookstore and could hardly put it down. There are photographs of France's delicious landscapes and historical events, quotes from artists and politicians (Monet said his favorite painting was his garden), and photos of present day France that will make you want to run to your travel agent. It is a coffee table book that will start lots of conversations. It's on my wish list.Highly recommend!

Because the writing is so exquisite, and the illustrations so enticing, I was trying to push back the day when I finished it. Ah, but this handsome, intelligent volume is more than strong enough to bear a dozen reads. I know I'll be returning to it again and again. With short essays as diverse - yet essentially Gallic - as French Writers, Provence, and The Impressionists, M. Tillinac treats the reader to his take on topics with great wit and gentle chauvinism [national pride]. (How to describe his writing.... A homespun Gore Vidal? An ultra-erudite Garrison Keillor?) And the photographs / illustrations...oh la la! They range from the simple (a man à table with his dog sitting patiently for scraps) to the sublime (Napoleon Bonaparte as painted by Antoine-Jean Gros, who truly did the Emperor a solid). The book is not a "where to eat, where to shop" confection. It's a charming yet serious look at the country that has civilization's back. A must-have for Francophiles and anyone with, or with a thirst for, the joie de vivre.
