When his estranged grandfather is shot and left for dead, an Army Ranger plunges into the criminal underworld of his youth to find a murderer . . . and uncovers a shocking family secret
From the time he was six years old, Van Shaw was raised by his Irish immigrant grandfather Donovan to be a thief—to boost cars, beat security alarms, crack safes, and burglarize businesses. But at eighteen, Dono's namesake and protégé suddenly broke all ties to that life and the people in it. Van escaped into the military, serving as an elite Army Ranger in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now, after ten years of silence, Dono has asked his grandson to come home to Seattle. "Tar abhaile, más féidir leat"—Come home, if you can.
Taking some well-earned leave, Van heads to the Pacific Northwest, curious and a little unnerved by his grandfather's request. But when he arrives at Dono's house in the early hours of the morning, Van discovers the old thief bleeding out on the floor from a gunshot to the head. The last time the two men had seen each other Dono had also been lying on the floor—with Van pointing a gun at his heart. With a lifetime of tough history between him and the old man, the battle-tested Ranger knows the cops will link him to the crime.
To clear his name and avenge his grandfather, Van must track down the shooter. Odds are strong that Dono knew the person. Was it a greedy accomplice? A disgruntled rival? Diving back into the illicit world he'd sworn to leave behind, Van reconnects with the ruthless felons who knew Dono best. Armed with his military and criminal skills, he follows a dangerous trail of clues that leads him deeper into Dono's life—and closer to uncovering what drove his grandfather to reach out after years of silence. As he plummets back into this violent, high-stakes world where right and wrong aren't defined by the law, Van finds that the past is all too present . . . and that the secrets held by those closest to him are the deadliest of all.
Edgy and suspenseful, rich with emotional resonance, gritty action, and a deep-rooted sense of place, Past Crimes trumpets the arrival of a powerful new noir talent.

Written in Irish Gaelic, the language of Dono's childhood, the words after the comma said so much.Come home, if you can.Van Shaw hasn't been home to Seattle for many years, over ten years in fact. When Van left to join the US Army, he didn't leave on the best of terms. Dono was a career criminal who taught Van every trick of his trade. Van turned his back on a life of crime and has his career in the Army has taken him to dangerous places, he's seen and experienced many things.'If you can' are the three words that tell Van that Dono is serious. Despite hearing nothing for tenyears, he knows his grandfather well enough to realise that something is not right and his fears are proved correct when he arrives at Dono's house. Dono is seriously injured, he's been shot, and whoever shot him has only just left the house.Van is determined to find out who shot Dono, and why. Nowadays Van is a law-abiding citizen, serving his country, but his old skills are still there, and nobody knows how Dono operated better than Van.What follows is a story that catches the reader up very quickly. Van gets caught up in the seedy underworld again, getting reacquainted with faces that he'd always thought he had left behind. As the action rattles along at a very fast pace, the author has interweaved Van's early years into the story, using old diary entries that let the reader know more about his background. From these, we also find out more about Dono's more recent years, and the reasons why events have happened.Throughout Past Crimes, Van battles with loyalties; to his grandfather - the man who raised him, but who has always existed on the wrong side of the law; and to the Army - where he has shone, and made a new and better life for himself. This is a great thriller. Glen Erik Hamilton can certainly write a story that hooks, and has created a cast of characters who, although decidedly dodgy, are human and strong. The Seattle setting is vividly portrayed, with the seedy underworld and the characters that populate it taking lead roles.

By Liz Barnsley Past Crimes is a very authentic feeling, cleverly written thriller with a main protagonist in Van Shaw that I absolutely adored.A note from his Grandfather brings Shaw back to Seattle, despite having left that life behind vowing never to return. When he discovers his Grandfather has been attacked, he starts to delve into the time that he has been away and finds himself drawn inexorably back into that world. This is a fast, action packed story a la Reacher (although to my mind with much greater depth) which will engage immediately. I loved all the characters, Shaw of course with his inner turmoil and need to do right in a whole world full of wrong, but also Dono, who raised him and is a highly intriguing, shadowy figure who you slowly learn more about. Cleverly written to draw you into the family dynamic, as Shaw remembers his past and looks to the future, I really did enjoy every minute of it.There are some little twists and turns along the way, the backstory is drip fed in perfect harmony with current events so you can start to see the bigger picture, the story is peppered with many colourful and eclectic characters and the author walks a fine line between right and wrong, Shaw especially lives in a world of grey area’s and this comes over beautifully. The scene setting is also top notch – Seattle comes to vivid life giving the characters and events an anchor and putting you right on the spot.Overall then a most terrific thriller – Hopefully we will meet Shaw again one day, I for one will look forward to that greatly.**Publisher Review Copy UK**

Well-written, with interesting and thoroughly developed characters By OpenBookSociety dot com Brought to you by OBS reviewer KaytPast Crimes is well written, with interesting and thoroughly developed characters that takes the reader through an intriguing and intense drama in the debut thriller. Glen Erik Hamilton has written a wonderful first novel that ensnares the reader with descriptive writing and suspenseful action. A story of past family secrets, criminal lives, and a man set on clearing his name. For the main character Van Shaw, the life he left behind will be the only way he can clear himself.Van Shaw who is now an Army Ranger, left his grandfather and his criminal life behind 10 years before. He has not spoken to Donovan, Dono, since he walked out the door 10 years before and joined the army. When he receives a note from Dono asking him to return home, he can not say no. But when he arrives at his grandfather’s house, the house he was raised in, he finds his grandfather shot and clinging to life. Since he is the one to find Dono, Shaw becomes the prime suspect as the detectives try to find answers. Shaw can think of only one way to clear his name, investigate himself and that means dipping back into the old criminal life and its occupants. As Shaw searches for answers he finds some strange players in this mystery. Some old timers and some new game players have a part in the sad end of Dono. With intrigue and depth, Past Crimes is a thriller that keeps the reader guessing and involved in this intense novel. Glimpses of Shaw’s past are interspersed through the story so the reader can see how he came to be who is and where he is. The characters are interesting and the storyline is provocative. Even as you think you know what is going to happen, you take a different turn and off you go.Past Crimes is a wonderful, suspenseful thriller that should appeal to several different genres. Thriller, suspense, criminal novels, all of that is in this wonderful debut novel. If this is going to be a series, I can not wait for the next installment. A character like Van Shaw is compelling and could make a wonderful action hero. There is an interesting twist in an old secret that is worth the wait. I highly recommend this novel to all readers that enjoy a real page turner. *OBS would like to thank the publisher for supplying a free copy of this title in exchange for an honest review*
