It should have been an open and shut murder case, but Mia Quinn finds out nothing about it is simple.

After a young Chinese prostitute is stabbed to death by her rich American client, the tabloids dub Dandan Yee “Lethal Beauty”—despite the fact that she was the one who ended up dead. Yet even with double standards and naked prejudice working against her, Seattle prosecutor Mia Quinn is determined to get justice for Dandan Yee.

But when a key witness goes missing and an unsavory juror shuts down deliberations without explanation, Mia fears the trial—and the law—are being tampered with.

A constellation of fresh killings has Mia and homicide detective Charlie Carlson searching for a common source and puts Mia’s family in the crosshairs of a Chinese crime cabal. Meanwhile, Dandan Yee’s mother has opted to take matters into her own hands . . . and the stakes get more lethal overnight.

In the midst of all this, Mia has to contend with a fifteen-year-old son who is growing up too fast for his own good and the idea that Charlie might want to be more than just friends. Can Mia and Charlie stop the murders and still keep her family safe? Or is the very act of seeking justice enough to cost her everything—and everyone—she loves?

Lethal Beauty (A Mia Quinn Mystery), by Lis Wiehl

Review 'Fans of J.D. Robb's Lt. Eve Dallas or The Closer's Brenda Leigh Johnson will appreciate strong female protagonist Quinn. In addressing the tough social issues of sex trafficking and domestic slavery in sometimes graphic detail, the best-selling coauthors combine skillfully multiple story lines with realistic characters and a palpable tension that keep the pages turning. The spiritual message is subtle: evil is everywhere, but where there is faith and people willing to fight for what is right, good will prevail.' (starred review) (Library Journal)'In Wiehl and Henry’s page-turning third Mia Quinn mystery (after 2014’s A Deadly Business).... The book moves effortlessly from one interesting character to another.' (Publishers Weekly)“New York Times bestselling author Wiehl has written a high-stakes suspense that starts with the very first page. Lethal Beauty, book three in the “Mia Quinn Mystery” series, has all of the elements of a top notch mystery: missing witnesses, jury tampering, and a parent that tries to take justice into her own hands.” – CBA Retailers + Resources (CBA Retailers + Resources)“The third installment of Wiehl’s Mia Quinn series takes the action and intrigue up another notch. The suspense is exciting throughout, with international ties and a fascinating side story about Mia’s son that is quite pertinent for today’s reader.” – Romantic Times (Romantic Times)'Wiehl's partnership with Henry brings out her humanity without the supernatural side that emerges in her other books written with Pete Nelson.Fans of Mia Quinn (A Deadly Business, 2014, etc.) will find this a well-considered addition to the series. Can Mia and Charlie stop the murders and still keep her family safe? Or is the very act of seeking justice enough to cost her everything—and everyone—she loves?Review: The book was very interesting. I really liked to see the main characters return. The storyline was sad. It was very well written and realistic. I did find it easy to read overall. The theme of human trafficking is tragic and difficult to identify in real life. The sideline story of Gabe and steroids was understandable at the end, but not as believable for me. It seemed to deviate from Gabe’s character. Overall the book was worth the read and had a quick wrap up. I really liked how the finally concluded. For me it was the perfect way to wrap it up because I like a big final scene, this topic is very real for people and I was glad to see the ending being quick and final. The bad men seemed to have eyes and ears everywhere, without anything stopping them from silencing those that threatened their interests. Sometimes, evil seems to have the upper hand and this alone is scary. I liked the unravelling of this evil, which became disorganized and desperate. The main character seems disconnected at times from God, and the faith side of the story was limited. I hoped to see a growth in Mia Quinn in her faith. The previous books seemed to be drawing her closer to God, but that seemed to be sidelined in this story. That was my only disappointment with the story.I would like to thank Net Galley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for allowing me to read and review this book in return for a free copy and I was never asked to write a favorable review by anyone.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. lethal beauty review By rebecca stoneking Lethal Beauty" the latest installment in the Mia Quinn Mystery series by Lis Wiehl. In this novel Mia is prosecuting a man who is accused of killing a Chinese immigrant working in a "massage parlor". Following the hung jury verdict, Mia's not taking no for an answer. She continues to try and find a way of bringing the murderer to justice. She stumbles into an evil web the Chinese undocumented immigration, and the underground world of slavery, prostitution, and drugs. I found this book brought to mind many things that I know to be true, yet had not put together. "Lethal" is probably the best book of the series. Wiehl didn't include the football player in this one, so he was sorely missed; however, I liked that the series took a turn to focus more on Mia. The reader became more involved with her children and work place. The women in this book became more of the heroes as well. I received this book in exchange for an honest review from www.booklookbloggers.com.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The simplistic and undeveloped writing could have been better classified as a Young Adult read By los I picked up this book as Wiehl/Henry are "New York Times bestselling author" (jacket quote despite the two authors) and the Library Journal review on the jacket compared it to John Grisham legal suspense thrillers. I wish I was more aware of the second jacket reviewer, RT Reviews, which turns out to be Romantic Times book reviews, which is a head scratcher for me, as this book had little romance to it. The simplistic and undeveloped writing could have been better classified as a Young Adult read, for the sexual tension in this book was adolescent, not the story of a 40-something professional prosecutor ("the time he had asked her to brunch? He never said the word *date*.... She didn't know whether she was angry or disappointed."). Character development was minimal, or about 15 chapters late. The plot is reasonable, and takes on a serious issue (illegal immigration and subsequent slavery). However, the story unfolds in a sporadic manner, and plot portions can become unrealistic. It lacked attention to detail, suspense, thrills, and the in-depth developed writing of a Grisham novel, but I can see this book as entertaining for some as a fast beach read.

I received this book at no charge from Amazon for Kindle. I enjoyed the read immensely, and want to thank the publisher for generously providing the story free.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Classic Short Stories You May Have Never Read By Danielle N. Hart These are definitely period mysteries, with an investigator who is handy with his Bible and his brain. Uncle Abner finds the answer to the mystery, but in several of the cases, chooses to enforce justice on his own terms. There is quite a bit of religion in the book, but it seems to be in line with the period - and the main character isn't trying to convert anyone to his way of thinking. Many of the stories are cases about inheritances. The language in the stories is very good - in keeping with the period and evocative, without getting too rambly. Some examples:“I mean,” said Abner, “that one ought not to have an interest in another’s death.”“Why not?” said Gaul.“Because,” replied Abner, “one may be tempted to step in before the providence of God and do its work for it.”“Gaul,” said Abner, “you will surely see all who are to be seen in hell!”The two had been mated by the county gossips from the cradle, and had lived the prophecy.

Justice Shown in it's Rawest Form By Edward Shepherd, Jr. Faith, Law and Morality all work together in these suspenseful tales to prove Justice can work, and maybe needs all three elements, to work properly. These are great tales that need reading more than once to be absorbed thoroughly. This book is highly recommended. I wish there were more, similar books to read.

I Am Here, by Alex M Liuzzi

About the Author Alex M. Liuzzi is not a professional writer. The challenging and ever-changing field of child-rearing is his primary occupation, with anything in the field of education a distant second. He does, however, attempt to uncover humor and a bit of truth in himself and in the world through the medium of fiction. Before "I Am Here", there have been and will be other novels ("Over Mud Creek" and "The Center of the Universe"). You may or may not purchase them. None of that really matters in the grand scheme of things. Instead, the author requests that you find your medium, seek your truth… …and along the way find some humor in it all.

Other books and films have explored the transgender experience through the eyes of adults. But this beautiful story is told through the voice of an 11-year-old kid who faces lots of typical growing-up challenges, colored by the fact she is also transgender. This carefully crafted work speaks to the challenge we each face to be real and present, first with ourselves and then in our community. Bravo.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. 3.5 Stars By Angel E. **Won this book through Goodreads Firstreads**Hannah comes home from buying produce at a neighbors house to find Mae (the woman who raised her) coughing and choking. Mae tells her that she tried to keep them away and then tells her to run. Hannah has no idea what Mae is talking about and she goes to get her a glass of water, but when she returns, Mae's dead. She decides she wants to continue living in the house, but first, she has to ask Christobelle (her birth mother) because she is the legal owner. On the night of Mae's funeral, Hannah meets Callum, the guy who ferried the guests from town to her house on the swamp. There's an attraction there that leads to more later on.Then Christobelle shows up. Hannah hasn't seen her real mother in a decade. Things are tense between them, but Christobelle allows her to live in the house. When Hannah goes back in, a neighbor tells her that her childhood friend, Sarah Anne, is there. Hannah is excited and cautious about seeing her old friend. Cautious because guilt had suddenly overcome her.The last time she saw Sarah Anne, they were escaping through Sarah Anne's basement window because her house was on fire. Her brother was badly burned and died a few days later in the hospital. Hannah saw him through the window, but got scared and ran home. Leaving Sarah Anne to watch as the flames tried to consume her brother. That is just a taste of what is going on in this book. I really like stories set in Louisiana, especially in New Orleans and on the bayou. There is no other place in the world that houses so many unique and colorful people. They are known for the legends they tell and Cauchemar delves into that world.I wouldn't say that the story was slow-moving; it kept a steady pace. Enough to hold my interest until something new happened. There was an eeriness to it that reminded me of The Skeleton Key.You will find a somewhat rekindled friendship that may not be as it seems, an unexpected sacrifice, and just enough of the supernatural to keep you alert. I would recommend this book, definitely if you like folklore and legends.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great writing, beautiful story By Maria G. This book took me through such a large spectrum of feelings, anything between strong emotions as a woman and a mother, and goosebumps for not knowing what shadows and creatures will pop up when I turn the page. The author introduced the characters with well-thought timing and impact, giving the reader time to understand them and then waiting hungry for new ones coming into the story.I love Hannah for being a normal girl, yet special and elegant through her discretion and simplicity. I like Callum for his integrity as a man and a human being, and I loved his love for Hannah which reminded me of the good old movies. The book captivated me through the storyline as well as the beauty of details, the atmosphere and by igniting the mind to put pieces together: What is that creature lurking in the dark? Is this really happening?

I'm simply blown away that this is Ms. Grigorescu's first novel! Highly, highly recommend for anyone who enjoys dark mystery.

It could be part of a much bigger story about the evolution of a talented young woman. Might have more impact if the author(s) were to add a preface or epilogue with factual information about overview of eating disorders and/or mental disorders in general

As Cairo swelters in the summer of 1986, spunky Egyptian teen Zahra pins on her hijab and faces the heat like a warrior, prepared to risk everything for a secret rendezvous with her lover. But after climbing the Ahmeds’ wall and sneaking into their household, Zahra’s parents catch her and force her to choose between telling them the truth about her relationship with the Ahmeds’ daughter or marrying the son they think she’s been sneaking there to see. Years later, Zahra’s American daughter, Aisha, steps off a plane at Cairo International Airport and greets her grandparents for the first time. Who is this tall girl wearing black clothes, piercings, and a pixie cut, they wonder, and what secrets does she hold? Zahra and Aisha’s lives unfold together as they both grapple with their religious beliefs, social pressures, love, and the search for a place to call home amidst the feminist movement and the Arab Spring.

Transcended, Awakening, and Pain: A Generational Novel for Women By Ravenova A novel of sexuality and awakening, Cairo in White traverses time to show the coming of age stories of a mother and her daughter, each influencing the other to follow the heart and not the expectations of society. Zhara is a young woman growing up in 1970s Egypt. Each night she sneaks into the Ahmed’s house to visit Jamila. Her heart throbs with this forbidden passion for another woman, and when her marriage is arranged to the brother and not the sister, she sacrifices her happiness for her family and tradition.Later in America, hiding her true self from her parents, having escaped an abusive and unwanted marriage, Zhara meets up with a strong female cast who lead her toward finding herself. But she still bleeds for the one who escaped.Meanwhile, Zhara’s rebellious daughter, Aisha, returns to Egypt, having finished college with no map on how to go forward. Looking for her own identity in a past full of submerged meanings and whispers, Aisha begins to fall in love as she awakens to the joys of family and tradition. But, will she be able to handle what she finds beneath the warmth? Will she have the strength to buck tradition or is she going to follow in her mother’s footsteps?Cairo in White explores what it means to find love, to honor family and tradition, to redefine yourself, and to seek all the missing things. A brave novel, it explores our darkest and most beautiful parts of self, the elements that make us ashamed and the elements that make us strong, leading the reader on a journey that is both a moral pathway and an enjoyable discovery of location and character, merging the excitement of plot with a thought-out message and an ending that is a tribute to women. The writing glows with the beauty of description and the simplicity of expression, the complicated explored with a subtly and charm that is unique, making characters come alive and situations in faraway lands real and relevant to today. As the characters discover their pathways against the setting of Arab Spring and a country in upheaval, we feel that even though the final chapter is over, the characters are not, their venture continuing into a new world. Cairo in White is a novel not to be missed, a journey that once begun changes the reader. Highly recommended.- Ravenova

By Steelheader Kelly Ann Jacobson brilliantly weaves the coming-of-age story of a headstrong Egyptian daughter, Aisha, with the remembered regrets of the mother who raised her within narrative so smooth the reader only remembers to pause during moments when Jacobson's lyricism glints so brightly one must slow to admire. With grace and great detail, Cairo in White speaks of loneliness and love, of expectation of self versus obligation, and of cultures starkly different but, ultimately, blurred. I couldn't put it down, nor could I choose which protagonist I was most drawn to. Wholly engaging and absolutely artful.

The writing is fabulous, but more importantly, the story’s central themes resonated deeply with me. How do you reconcile cultural taboos with what you know to be true about yourself? How do you manage your family’s expectations with what you really want and need? Both Aisha and Zahra feel, for different reasons, like outsiders in a culture that is an irreplaceable part of them. The conflicts of growing up and growing into yourself, figuring out where you belong and who you are—these are universal struggles, and Cairo In White illustrates them beautifully. One of my favorite exchanges occurs when Zahra asks Jamila why white is her favorite color. “There are so many beautiful colors to choose from, why would you choose the one that doesn’t count?” Zahra asks with the sweet thoughtlessness of youth. “Sometimes, the things that don’t count are the most beautiful of all,” her girlfriend responds. Indeed.Zahra’s loss is clearly defined—she knows all too well what she has given up—while Aisha’s is vague, an indefinable lack—both of family support and purpose in life. Their interwoven narratives contrast identities—mother and daughter, traditional and modern, gay and straight, immigrant and emigrant—that are not so different as they seem. A low throb of heartache and loss run beneath the narrative, but so, too, does a bright vein of optimism. The best stories fully ground the reader in a place. They make you miss somewhere you’ve never been. I can see it all now: the crowded markets, the women with jangling bracelets haggling with old vendors. The swish of cool fabric against hot skin, cigarette and shisha smoke blending and floating on a dry breeze.Jacobson has a gift for descriptions—for pulling the reader on to the page and immersing her in an unfamiliar setting, whether on the streets of Cairo or in an immigrant neighborhood in Northern Virginia. In all, I highly recommend it! I wouldn’t be surprised if this book found its way on to my Best of 2014 list in a few months. For my full review, please visit melodyandwords.com!
