By Nelle I read this light and delightful little novel on the beach and found it to be a very enjoyable vacation companion: just the right balance of realism and fancy. Ivy is a likable and satisfyingly complex child protagonist. The themes of identity, relationships and coming of age are cleverly executed.

This is a well-crafted novel in all ways, but the true delight is getting to know our 8-year old narrator, Ivy. She is so smart, so creative and so sweet, she a joy to be with while you read this novel. Fox masters the 8-year old lexicon and imagery, and as a result, Ivy springs from the page. When she begins to worry about the struggles in her family, it's difficult to accept that we can't reach out and hug her.The Deception Artist is a kind of voyeuristic coming-of-age novel as the cast of supporting characters matures and works on problems from crushes to the recession, Ivy clings to a world of imagination and make-believe. The crux here is that while Ivy is reluctant to let go of her make-believe world, we the reader discover that we are all engaged in make-believe of one sort or another. Pretending things are OK when they are not, lying about things that embarrass us, pretending to be happy when we are not, these are the deceptions that turn each of us into The Deception Artist.Playful, insightful and optimistic at its core, The Deception Artist is a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Ivy is an ordinary, yet extraordinary, eight year old who navigates life in a unique way with one foot in her own make believe world and the other firmly planted in the real day to day of her own life. The author, Fayette Fox, artfully creates a believable character in Ivy who, while still a child, also possesses moxie and self awareness usually found in one of more mature years. As I was reading this book I found myself cheering on this little girl. Well written with engrossing dialog, The Deception Artist is a enjoyable must read!
