After scandal befalls Westland, Evie and Essie, aged nineteen, travel to Richmond, Virginia, to escape their abusive pasts. The secrets they hold and the pain of the past lead them away from one another and back home again. A story about a black slave who frees a white woman, Essie's Roses reveals the innocence of children's friendships, the diverse meanings of freedom, the significance of a dream, and the power of love. Review "...all I can say is wow, what an amazing read. What a well-written, completely believable and insightful book.Essie's Roses is a 'fictional' novel, yet it encompasses the same importance of message, and will certainly remind readers of their intrinsic knowledge of right versus wrong with the same quiet strength of conviction that Harriet Beecher Stowe provided to her readers when she wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin.Michelle Muriel has penned a wonderfully moving work of fiction.I fully expect to see Essie's Roses on the silver screen someday. Five Stars!"-Charline Ratcliff, Feathered Quill Book Reviews"Miss Muriel's novel is a thing of beauty. I loved the changing perspectives. It was refreshing to see various points of view of the same story, and the author did it seamlessly. I could tell the author took a great deal of time researching the era, and that is something I always appreciate in a historical novel. Overall, Essie's Roses will make you laugh and cry, but most of all, appreciate the innocence of children's friendship. Michelle Muriel should be very proud of her accomplishment in this novel and I will happily recommend it on to others." -Heather Osborne, Readers' Favorite
From the Author REVIEWS:"Impressively well written from beginning to end, "Essie's Roses" is an inherently absorbing and skillfully presented read, establishing author Michelle Muriel as an exceptionally talented novelist." -Midwest Book Review"Michelle Muriel's tremendously impressive debut novel takes place in the Antebellum South and centers on the experiences of four remarkable women... Muriel does an extremely confident job of moving her complex, multi-part novel forward. Her characters are vividly drawn, and the many period details - social, linguistic, and even literary - with which she fleshes out her story never feel forced or melodramatic. Fans of both Gone with the Wind and Geraldine Brooks' March will find Essie's Roses a richly moving reading experience." -Historical Novel Society WATCH THE BOOK TRAILER!Visit Michelle Muriel's Amazon Author page to watch the official book trailer for her historical novel ESSIE'S ROSES. When the red buds were beginning to open, they smelled rich like wine. The delicate yellow roses teased me with their perfume. In the morning their outer petals hinted of mint and their centers smelled of vanilla cake. On a warm afternoon, their scent laced with ginger and honey tickled my nose, and in the cool of the evening, sweet sugar icing." -ESSIE'S ROSES, Michelle MurielEssie's Roses is an inspiring story that focuses on the power of love and those childhood friendships that stay in our memory forever. But it also takes a look at history in a unique way, and will remind us all to treasure the precious gift of freedom and the power and hope that comes in doing a dream. I'm excited to share it with you. The journey of writing for me is more than filling that blank computer screen. It's more than spending years of research coming up with a unique story you pray will engage and entertain a reader. It's about learning, sharing, illuminating history in a unique way and inspiring others.Yes, I truly hope you are entertained. After all, that is why we read fiction... to escape... to be transported somewhere else. And when that happens, even for a moment, it's magical. It's wonderful! But I also hope you're encouraged and inspired.Stories and history have a way of coming together to inspire us, perhaps make us look at things differently. Look at ourselves. I chose to explore the diverse meanings of freedom in my first novel because ironically, living in the freest country in the world, freedom can be so allusive for many.My desire is that the message of Essie's Roses will inspire you to be everything you've ever dreamed to be. To revisit dreams. Dust them off. Pay attention to them. Do them. To step out of fear. Silence critical, harsh, maybe even abusive voices. Stand up tall and be free.Essie's Roses has taught me not only about history, but about myself. I'm changed forever writing this book. Many writers say it's a long, hard journey writing a book: it's a long hard journey knowing yourself. Discovering and knowing your worth. What is it tied to? When things are tied down they can't fly. Writing a book is easy.No matter who is screaming, you are not. You are. You matter. Your dreams are not over. And if anything in your life is holding you back, you can face it, knock it down, banish it, release it, and never look back. So my dear friend and reader, thank you. Thank you for saying yes to Essie's Roses. Enjoy!Spread the word... spread the message... Be free!Michelle MurielI would love to hear from you! Follow me on Amazon, Facebook, and Goodreads.

A book is a new companion that you hold in your hands ready to open up in anticipation to begin a new journey and, after doing so, you discover you have just been introduced to new people, walk in situations that you ordinarily would never experience, go to places and see sights never before seen… these are the joys of falling into a book and having it tell you a story. This is what I have found in Essie’s Roses. Essie’s Roses is the book that when you put down, the characters are in your head that you keep thinking about and look forward to getting back and escaping into. Essie Roses starts out as a simple story between two girls; one being the daughter of a plantation owner and the other being a daughter of a slave. At a young age the girls know no color but the story evolves into the awaking to the realities of color and holding on to the love and friendship they share when they become adults. We get to read about the simple games of mischief that children play that bring about the bonding of two girls and how they escape to a favorite sanctuary where they can just be themselves and lay back on the green grass and gaze up into the clouds and share their dreams and secrets and also how it is so vital for one of the girls so that she can escape from the harsh realities of her life. The author has done a wonderful job introducing us to these two girls at such a young age and develops them into young ladies with such distinctive personalities. The dialog in the book really stands out. I enjoyed how simple the dialog between the girls was in the beginning of the book and how it changed with each growth period of the girls so that you felt the actual progression of their age.Another thing I want to say that stands out about this book is the way in which the details of the environment of the book are written in such a way that you really feel like you are walking the grounds of the plantation and feel the grass beneath your feet, view the clouds and be able to see the forms shaped in the sky. The details of the environment only get richer as the girls travel to Richmond, Virginia and we get to experience the sights of the city, streets, storefronts, and the beautiful descriptive details of their new home. When the author describes the passage where Essie is making the strawberry lemonade, I eagerly await my glass. I love any book that can take me to a place and drop me into the story. I am not looking through the window, I am in the window. In this book, I have found a great story and I am sad to have had to put it down. The book has made me laugh, get mad, and cry.I want to know more about these women and what happens in the next chapter of their lives. Michelle Muriel wrote a book that kept getting better and better. Usually, when about done, I have my next one already picked out. However, this time, I didn't want this book to end because I know these women have more stories to tell.

By Sandra Bratcher In reading Michelle Muriel's novel Essie's Roses, I'm reminded of the importance of dreams, the value of friendships and the power of love. This is not a historical novel written with Pollyanna platitudes as a way of escaping to a better life. These characters are real. Some are gritty and abusive while others are tender and sweet, but most of all they are very much alive. I could feel the pain of betrayal and sense the hopelessness in dreams that were shattered, yet through it all there remains a true bond of friendship and selfless acts of lovethat strengthen and enable them to press on toward a brighter future. This book was so good I didn't want to put it down. It was like eating a delicious meal that I wanted to eat slowly, savoring every bite. The memory of the characters are so vivid that I find myself wondering what they're up to and I'm tempted to search for them on Facebook just to catch up with them.

Besides, I knew the author as a student many years ago and was curious about her "first novel." Well, people who enjoy romantic fiction will love this book. The author has a sweeping imagination and a great ear for authentic southern dialogue. Locations are beautifully described and easily accepted and believed. Michelle Muriel creates a situation that must be faced by two girls as hand in hand they grow into womanhood. The author faces the situation squarely, believing in the strength of her characters. So I believe in them too. The heroines, Essie Mae and Evie, pull us through an action-filled plot set before and just after the Civil War, with surprising twists that work. There are nit-picking little things about the book that bother someone who prefers non-fiction, but this book has well-drawn characters living in an active plot that concludes with a very satisfying ending. I'm already waiting for her second book.Wesley Van Tassel, Ph.D.
