New York Times bestselling author Joanne DeMaio returns to seaside Stony Point in this novel filled with beach friends, love, and the enchantment of a sandy boardwalk winding along the shore.During two August weeks, denim designer Maris Carrington and coastal architect Jason Barlow prepare for their much-anticipated wedding. Guests arrive early, turning keys in charming cottage doors to begin their New England summer escape. The wedding is a reason for old friends to gather again; to meet in their shabby beach hangout and get the jukebox cranking; to walk that weathered boardwalk beneath a starry sky; to breathe the sweet salt air. "Cures what ails you," one of the friends, Neil, always said long before his life was sadly claimed. But his legacy was not. When Maris discovers Neil's long-lost journal, its passages reveal a heartbreaking secret. Can truths be found within its timeworn pages? Can this leather-bound journal unite the friends as their lives begin to fray? A bittersweet family reunion, a surprising encounter from a devastating accident, a shocking confession leaving one marriage shattered--all will test the once close-knit circle. Suddenly this safe haven on the tranquil Connecticut shoreline churns with emotional turmoil, threatening even the beach wedding just days before it is to happen.Yet like a silver cap on a breaking wave, love and friendship wash ashore with hope, ever shimmering, in The Denim Blue Sea.

Thoughtful writing, a heartfelt story, and unforgettable characters By Casee Clow While Joanne DeMaio has written five consistently wonderful books, perhaps her most memorable characters first appeared in her 2013 novel, Blue Jeans and Coffee Beans. It was the story of beach friends Maris, Jason, Eva, Matt, Kyle, and Lauren as they reunited years after a tragic accident killed Jason’s brother, Neil, the pillar of their collective friendship. Each suffered Neil’s loss in varying ways; Jason harbored a relentless guilt over his own survival of the accident, while for Lauren the memory of her love for Neil clouded her relationship with her husband Kyle. In The Denim Blue Sea, DeMaio revisits her characters from Stony Point as the friends gather together for Jason and Maris’s wedding day. It’s a time of celebration as Maris and Eva settle into their newly-realized sisterhood, as Jason and Maris prepare to make a lifelong commitment to each other, and as Kyle and Lauren return to the beach with their marriage stronger than ever. But as the sea breeze changes without warning, so too does the peaceful summer when their old beach town once again brings back difficult memories and the ghosts of wounds left unhealed. The Denim Blue Sea is filled with all the hallmarks of DeMaio’s work, from the poetic narrative to the lush descriptions of seaside life that bewitch a scent of salty sea air right into the reader’s world. The many characters from her former novel are brought back to the pages with all their original charisma, each stepping back into the reader’s mind with instant familiarity. There’s a running theme throughout the novel, of matrimonial bliss and hardship alike; but the strongest thread that ties the stories of DeMaio’s characters together is the commitments we make to those we love, and how love itself can sometimes find a way to challenge those commitments. It’s the novel’s one character to never fully appear – Neil – whose memory tests each friend’s commitment in unexpected ways. For Jason, it’s the arrival of an unwelcome figure from his past, and the soul-searching journey of how this unforeseen reconnection might help him come to terms with the loss that’s still so painful; for Maris, it’s the discovery of a much-loved journal and the secrets it contains, which could turn past wounds into entirely new challenges; and for Kyle and Lauren, it’s a burning truth that lies unresolved between them and, when exposed once again to the memories waiting for them at the beach, could ultimately tear them apart. The emotional complications that arise from each character’s struggle are unfolded before the reader in DeMaio’s ever-luminous prose, which finds no shortage of inspiration from the sea, itself an extraordinary life form that teaches us about patience and acceptance, about how to slow down, how to pay attention, and especially how to endure through any storm. As Maris designs her new denim collection, inspired by Neil’s teachings on the sea’s majesty, the nuances of a dreamy beach life become vivid; but as the characters of the novel face their struggles, through arguments and heart-opening conversations alike, DeMaio reminds her reader that life and the sea have a lot in common: they may not be peaceful all the time, but the beauty is always there to be seen. With the author’s familiar blend of poignant drama, heart-warming romance, and idyllic seaside charm, The Denim Blue Sea brings Stony Point to life in a way that will make its readers feel as though they never left.(Review © Casee Marie, originally published on LiteraryInklings.com. Jason and Maris are getting married in 2 weeks and their friends and family are converging in Stony Point, Connecticut to celebrate. Jason struggles with meeting the man who not only cost him his leg but also his brother's life. Maris wonders if she can give everything to her career and also to Jason. Kyle and Lauren's marriage is on the rocks. And Neil. Always Neil. Entwined in their lives even though he is long gone.Watching the waves along the beach this evening, from up on the bluff. There’s something sad about those waves breaking on the shore. Maybe it’s that they’re dying, the sound of the water tumbling and hissing over the sand is their last breath. But I don’t think they’re ever fully gone. That amazing energy of the sea can’t just stop—it shifts into the earth, the air. Because when I close my eyes, I hear it. When I take a deep breath, I feel it, really. Energy that strong just changes course, like the tide, I guess. Always moving, always there. Somewhere.I, along with others, waited what feels like a long time for this latest Joanne DeMaio installment. The characters all have histories in the prior books and their stories continue here. Joanne did a great job reminding us of their history in The Denim Blue Sea without creating a heavy back story. If you have not read the other novels you will follow the story and will likely want to go back and read the others after this.I follow Joanne DeMaio because her voice is descriptive without bogging the story down in adjectives. She creates tension without losing you along the way. She balances the good and the bad in a realistic way - what happens to these friends could be the story of our lives. If you want a wonderful summer read in your beach bag or you can't dip your toes in the breakers, pick up The Denim Blue Sea. You will find a whole new group of summertime friends between the covers. You can find this book on Amazon http://amzn.to/1z626DmJoanne's Amazon page is here http://amzn.to/1HEYNnSWhole Latte LifeBlue Jeans and Coffee BeansSnowflakes and Coffee CakesTrue BlendThe Denim Blue Sea

By Laurel-Rain Snow As we gather in Stony Point, Connecticut, with the characters of The Denim Blue Sea, we are reminded of their histories, along with their secrets and flaws. There will be a wedding between two beloved residents of the community: Maris Carrington, a denim designer, and Jason Barlow, an architect who renovates cottages. Friends and family from all around will come together for the event. As we watch the friends gather, like Kyle and Lauren, and Matt and Eva, we see the connections between them and feel the camaraderie...and as we follow them through the days at the beach, we can almost literally smell the sweet salt air.Like the waves beneath the sea, there is an undercurrent of secrets, some of which will surface. Will the friendships survive? Will each of them find a way to repair the damage of the past?I enjoyed Maris, from a previous book, and love how she had found her sister Eva. Elsa, the aunt from Italy, brings a wonderful sense of the lost mother, just in time for the wedding.Central to the community and the lives of the friends is Foley's, the battered up beach shack where they all convened as teenagers; it brought some of my own memories to light. Mine were not on a beach, but another kind of place where everyone gathered...those are the moments that help us remember who we are.At the heart of some of the angst, as well as some of the connections, is Jason's brother, Neil, who died too soon. His legacy includes those he left behind, and an old battered journal that contains some secrets of its own. Will his friends be able to move beyond the pain? Will Jason find creative energy within the pages of the journal as he begins a very special project?I love how the author brings us right into the setting until we can smell the sweet salt air, the scent of the hydrangeas, and see the seashells they gather. I can feel the friendship, too, and the pain of conflicts that test the strength of their bonds. Another wonderful and memorable story that earned 5 stars.
