Its title suggests "fluff" and pandering to public taste. I was also suspicious of the Bible references used, because the author tends to cherry-pick verses from assorted Bible versions that tend to support his premise. Having said all that, I must admit that Randy Alcorn handles the subject nicely and succinctly. He makes and supports several valid points.the subject, of course, is happiness, and this little book (a mere 90 pages) gets to the point rather quickly. Does "blessed" really mean happy? Are joy and happiness the same thing? At what point in history did Christians start thinking of blessed and happy as two concepts--the one word evoking holiness, the other suggesting worldliness? You will enjoy some choice quotations from noted authors of the past. Those by Charles Spurgeon (who struggled with depression) are especially choice. Spurgeon reminds us that a phrase in I Tim. 1:11 is best translated "the glorious gospel of the happy God." He then states, "Well, then, adorn the gospel by being happy!" On another occasion Spurgeon said to a group of seminary students, "When you speak of heaven, let your face light up with a heavenly gleam. Let your eyes shine with reflected glory. And when you speak of hell--well your usual face will do!"This book is apparently a much-condensed version of the too-long original hard copy called simply "Happiness" by Randy Alcorn. Don't get the two mixed up if you are interested in the cheaper and shorter version--a good tool to put in the hands of those considering the claims of Christianity.

A Small Taste of the Full-Length Happiness Book reviewed by Bill Pence of CoramDeotheBlog.com By Bill Pence This booklet is adapted from the author’s acclaimed (but 496 page) book Happiness, which is already showing up on many 2015 “Best” lists. Perhaps this short version was released because of the hesitancy of some (including myself) to tackle a book of such length. It can also serve as an enticement to read the full-length book.Alcorn writes that Christians throughout church history have understood that happiness, gladness, feasting, and partying are God’s gifts, yet many Christians today live as if faith drains happiness. But he writes that Christians have the benefit of walking the hard roads hand in hand with a Savior and King whose love for us is immeasurable. Because of this, who has more reason to be happy than Christians? Amen! The book is organized well. Each short section begins with a question, such as “Do We Have a Choice Whether or not to Desire Happiness?”, or “Is it Okay for Christians to be Happy?” There is then a short response to the question followed by one or more Scripture verses. As such, it could be read devotionally, with one or more of the short readings tackled each day.Alcorn writes that he includes a lot of promises in this helpful booklet—most of them are God’s, not his. All of God’s promises are fully trustworthy because they are blood-bought, paid for by an all-powerful Lord who loves you radically.I recommend this booklet. You will enjoy it, and it may encourage you to read the full-length book.

I am pretty sure God is hoping we all get the message for two reasons. First, He is happy, He created happiness & He created us in His image. We need to get the point that this is how He is & how we are to be! Second, we need to tear down every barrier & this is probably one of the biggest separating us from the Father & others from us. Christians too often lapse into "christianese" when we are in public or even in private prayer. If your speech changes when you speak to Him or about Him, that is a big clue! It is time to get real & be ourselves with Him, with other Christians & for sure to the world! I believe that one of the biggest deterrents the lost have is the affected tone of voice & language that is so common. God desires our genuine affection & if we can just be real with Him before the lost, they will see Him and not us.
