Belfast, 1985, amidst the “Troubles”:  Detective Sean Duffy, a Catholic cop in the Protestant RUC (Royal Ulster Constabulary), struggles with burn-out as he investigates a brutal double murder and suicide. Did Michael Kelly really shoot his parents at point blank and then jump off a nearby cliff? A suicide note points to this conclusion, but Duffy suspects even more sinister circumstances. He soon discovers that Kelly was present at a decadent Oxford party where a cabinet minister’s daughter died of a heroin overdose.  This may or may not have something to do with Kelly’s subsequent death. New evidence leads elsewhere: gun runners, arms dealers, the British government, and a rogue American agent with a fake identity. Duffy thinks he’s getting somewhere when agents from MI5 show up at his doorstep and try to recruit him, thus taking him off the investigation.Duffy is in it up to his neck, doggedly pursuing a case that may finally prove his undoing.

Gun Street Girl: A Detective Sean Duffy Novel, by Adrian McKinty

Review Shortlisted for the 2016 Edgar Award, the 2016 Anthony Award, the 2015 Ned Kelly Award and the 2016 Audie Award. McKinty's Sean Duffy, policing the mean streets of 1985 Northern Ireland, tackles gun runners, arms dealers, MI5, and a mysterious double murder -- or is it a triple? -- in the fourth installment of this terrific series.- The Boston Globe McKinty's observation of people and place is astute and very funny. His prose, at times telegraphic, at times lyrical, demands to be read out loud, preferably in a Carrickfergus accent....Gun Street Girl revels in the farce that was the past to deliver a stellar crime novel for the present. Simply outstanding.- The Sydney Morning Herald Duffy is more introspective here, and while the Troubles trilogy featured strong characterization, series fans will appreciate the further insight into the fallout from tragic cases, department politics, and war. As usual, there's plenty of funny and entertaining territorial battling between the dizzying array of law-enforcement agencies acting in Belfast, and Duffy's investigative skills seem somehow sharpened by his lost hope.-- Booklist (*starred* review) Gun Street Girl is yet another superb satire of its time and place.- The Irish Times Gun Street Girl is great; I'm so glad that Adrian McKinty has given readers another novel starring Belfast cop Sean Duffy, whose earlier exploits were described in the terrific Troubles trilogy. Don't miss any of the four...." --NANCY PEARL, NPR commentator and bestselling author of Book LustNamed one of the Best Books of 2015 by the Boston Globe! A 2016 Audie Award finalist for Best Mystery!“When it comes to Northern Irish crime fiction, Adrian McKinty forged the path the rest of us follow. The Sean Duffy series is the culmination of a career spent examining our darkest moments, and McKinty is the only crime writer who can do justice to our singular history.”  —STUART NEVILLE, author of The Final Silence“Gun Street Girl is great; I'm so glad that Adrian McKinty has given readers another novel starring Belfast cop Sean Duffy, whose earlier exploits were described in the terrific Troubles trilogy. Don't miss any of the four….”   —NANCY PEARL, NPR commentator and bestselling author of Book Lust“Series fans will appreciate the further insight into the fallout from tragic cases, department politics, and war. As usual, there’s plenty of entertaining territorial battling between the dizzying array of law-enforcement agencies acting in Belfast, and Duffy’s investigative skills seem somehow sharpened by his lost hope.”—BOOKLIST STARRED REVIEW “The latest Sean Duffy mystery brings back the cop who stars in these dark, intriguing, but still somehow witty novels.  His latest is a thrilling, thoroughly fantastic murder mystery with countless twists and turns that take readers to the darkest parts of Belfast and some huge cover-ups within the Irish and British governments.”—RT BOOK REVIEWS (FOUR STARS – Compelling)“Mixes a mordant wit and casual, unpredictable violence that vividly portrays a turbulent time…. McKinty is in full command of language, plot, and setting in a terrifying period of history that sometimes seems forgotten. Fans of gritty Northern Irish crime writers such as Stuart Neville, Declan Hughes, and Brian McGilloway will enjoy this talented author.”  —LIBRARY JOURNAL STARRED REVIEW “A grim, gritty but ever-captivating yarn.”—KIRKUS REVIEWS “I had been saddened at the thought that this series had ended. Imagine my delight; McKinty has now written a fourth book…. Read all four. They are phenomenal.”—THE SUN HERALD, MississippiPraise for previous Detective Sean Duffy novels:"McKinty's novels are...shot through with a smart, crackling humor that manages to be both dark and witty.... Each book is a solid standalone, but it's even better to ride the entire trilogy roller coaster." —BOSTON GLOBE"Exceptionally smart police procedurals. . . with [a] gritty, violent Belfast backdrop." —BOOKLIST STARRED REVIEW “A dark-humored shamus in the Phillip Marlowe tradition, [Sean Duffy] is . . . buoyed through the murderous chaos by his love of classical, punk, and new-wave music, the Greek philosopher Epicurus, and frothy pints of Guinness.” —WALL STREET JOURNAL"I Hear the Sirens in the Street blew my bloody doors off!" —IAN RANKIN, author of the Inspector Rebus novels"Sean Duffy is a compelling detective, the evocation of the period is breathtaking and the atmosphere authentically menacing." —BRIAN McGILLOWAY, New York Times-bestselling author

Detection amidst the riots, bombs and burnings of The Troubles By Patto Detective inspector Sean Duffy is used to getting petrol bombs and grenades thrown at him. He checks under his car every day for mercury tilt bombs. He's thirty-five and looks every minute of his age due to stress, ciggies, booze and cocaine.Nonetheless he's a good cop, best in the force, and known for solving cases. In this book he has to solve a double murder, which looks like an open-and-shut case, but Duffy's not so sure. The complexities of this case turn out to be above his pay grade, but that doesn't stop Duffy.Duffy is a very fun character, good at ridiculing professional incompetence and telling off deserving people. He's also compassionate. It upsets him when people die. And he's a gifted talker. He can talk his way out of difficulties of all sorts. He's not too lucky with women. His encounters at a church social for singles are hilarious.Adrian McKinty is a admirable writer. Even the most profane bits of dialog are finely written. In this book he tells a story that's both very funny and very sad. The characters feel like real people and include clever personable cops, conniving cops, idiotic bosses, and two strong women. This is the second book I've read by McKinty, and I'm finding him consistently excellent.

This is a crime novel about "The Troubles" and, if you're looking for something unique in the plotting, well, you're gonna have to keep looking. As with most stories taking on this time and place, the usual things happen. And mostly to the usual people.Duggery is skulled; Trays are bet-ed.Some of the wrong people die and some of the right people don't.Conversely, some of the right, do and some of the wrong go on (probably, in many cases, to re-appear in another episode of this series)So, why the 4 stars?Because, as expected as the plotting is, the writing is something else entirely. Not a page goes by without at least one extra-ordinarily felicitous turn of phrase; some, totally unexpected sentence formation. And all PERFECTLY understandable and readable.By which I mean, it's easy for a writer to be "unique". All he/she has to do is write so opaquely as to be unreadable (If I have to go back and re-read a sentence/paragraph more than three times, I generally don't continue to read many of those sentences/paragraphs).But to be clear, concise, entertaining, funny, sad, and profound, and STILL sound like the most enchanting raconteur you've encountered in ages, that takes style, that takes uniqueness, that takes... McKinty (I think I'm in love.... in only the nicest, most platonic way, of course)

Book Four of the Duffy Series Shows No Drop-Off By Dana King It’s a paradox of the author-reader relationship that some writers can so often—and so well—please a reader as to create a higher bar for themselves. The reader will still buy everything the author produces, but his standards for enjoyment may be higher than for a less-appreciated writer. I confess to being like that with Dennis Lehane. Live By Night got reviews about as good as The Given Day, but, to me, the fact it was even a notch below was a disappointment.Adrian McKinty’s Sean Duffy series has entered that same rarified air. My expectations for Gun Street Girl, based on the previous Duffy books, were as high as for any book I’ve read in the past year. The difference is, there was not a jot of disappointment in Gun Street Girl; McKinty met even my inflated expectations. The Duffy series has entered a realm where it is difficult to know which events are integrated historical facts, and which are purely fictional; he’s the Irish James Ellroy, with a less brutal style. Duffy isn’t a traditional here, nor is he bent the way so many of Ellroy’s characters are. He’s also not an anti-hero. He’s a man in a difficult, possibly untenable position: a Catholic cop in Protestant Northern Ireland during the peak of the Troubles. Scorned by many for being Catholic, he’s a member of what may be the most universally reviled organization in Northern Ireland: the Royal Ulster Constabulary. His fellow Catholics consider him a traitor because he’s a cop, and many of his peers on the police force—on whom he depends to have his back—distrust him because he’s Catholic. Now MI5 is recruiting him to work with informants, a prospect against even Sean recoils. He’s a cop, and cops depend on informants, but he’s also Irish, with a distaste for those who would inform on their peers as a violation of the Irish First Commandment: Whatever you say, say nothing. As before, the case Duffy must solve is formidable enough, but it serves mostly as a frame on which to hang a description of everyday existence during the Troubles, as Duffy must navigate a barren personal life along with the workaday accommodations required of a member of the RUC, such as never starting the car without checking for bombs. His work is unfulfilling on many levels, but it’s all he has. Duffy is not defeated—he still hopes for more—never really expects it. He has his own code, his own compromises and sacrifices he’s willing to make, understanding more as time goes on his true loyalty must be to those who have come to accept him and will protect him with the same vigor he extends for them.I’ve read all four of the Duffy novels, in sequence. It’s hard to say which is my favorite. The Cold, Cold Ground had the greatest impact on me, through its introduction to such a foreign world, but that could well have been the case no matter where I began; they’re all that good. Starting from the beginning does allow one to see Duffy’s life and attitude evolve as events take their toll, but he’s a fascinating character no matter where you pick him up. So pick him up. You’ll be fascinated and educated all at once.I have heard it said those who read fiction have a more highly developed sense of empathy for having viewed so many of life’s trials through the eyes of others. Never has this been truer than when viewing life as Sean Duffy sees it.

This heart-warming story takes us on an emotional journey with two teenage girls, growing up in a modern society surrounded by pressure to embark on a sexual relationship, before they are ready. The novel sensitively explores teenage friendship, sexual relationships and self esteem. In a world rife with underage sex and teenage pregnancies, this book gives young people a chance to see there is another way to express love: through mutual respect and trust. This is an invaluable addition, to any young person’s bookshelf.Martine JohnsonChild & Adolescent Wellbeing Mentorwww.wellbeingmentor.co.uk

Mel Gordon, author of Voluptuous Panic, the celebrated history about the sex culture of Weimar Berlin, returns with a stunningly illustrated look at Paris, The City of Pleasure, prior to and during German occupation during World War II.

The book Horizontal Collaboration encompasses the Jazz Age, Depression, World War and Occupation, and Liberation. It concludes with the shuttering of the licensed brothels in 1946, which some Parisian intellectuals thought was the final "destruction of French civilization".

The term "Horizontal Collaboration" refers to the sexual liaisons between French civilians and German occupiers from 1940 to 1944. These were extremely widespread and included both individual wartime relationships in addition to prostitution. As Allied armies swept across the French countryside, thousands of young women—and some men—were savagely punished by the authorities or by vigilante crowds, becoming a source of deep national shame.

Author Gordon redefines the pejorative term to mean something much broader: French men and women "horizontally collaborated" to overcome all social obstacles, divisions, and regulations. These obstacles include married and unmarried couples, straights and homosexuals, foreigners and locals, gun-toting soldiers and their vanquished subjects. The natural yearning for sexual pleasure equally corrupted all cohabitating partners.

This book rediscovers a remarkable time when the aesthetic and erotic capitol of Europe experienced remarkable heights and shameful lows. . . . Hundreds of images, most never before seen in a book, encompass this fascinating but little-known history.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This book is a great deal of fun By T. Morris This book is a great deal of fun, quite a bit of history, and not a little weird. It can be read straight through, as proper narrative non-fiction. It can also be browsed. Flipping through the pages to enjoy, or be scandalized by the images, it is then easy to find related text to help round out the picture.Horizontal Collaboration (a term coined during the German occupation) is the companion volume to Gordon’s previous book, Voluptuous Panic, the erotic world of Weimar Berlin, published in 2000, revised and expanded in 2006. The first one was fine, and it can’t be helped that a book about naughty doings in Paris is more fun than one about naughty doings in Berlin. Beyond the subject matter, Gordon and his editors at Feral Press have also improved their game since the Berlin book. There is a good balance of illustrated images as well as photographs. The photos, in turn, are mixed between people and places. The people are usually in some state of dishabille, but of course.Similarly, the author sprinkles French words and even short turns of phrase liberally through the text. If you are at all familiar with the language, that makes the reading all the more resonant. If you know no French beyond oui, the meaning can usually be determined from the context.Similarly, a general familiarity with the geography of Paris is helpful. Most people have heard of Montmartre and other historic neighborhoods, but a map would have been nice. Also, Gordon swings widely between English slang for body parts and acts, and technical terms. How disconcerting that it will depend on the reader. But those are quibbles. The author clearly relishes the topic, and after some overly broad introductory material, gets down to a rollicking romp through three decades of decadence. One of the best features, started in the Berlin book and continued here, is the mini-glossaries, about one to a chapter, with the highlights of topical terminology, such as Parisian criminal argot or terms for different types of brothels. There are also a few focus sections within some chapters taking a closer look at a particular facility, such as the ghoulish Cabaret du Neant, or the lavish One Two Two.The pictures, black and white, and color; drawings, paintings, posters, and sketches, range from droll to deranged. Most of it is soft-core, but a few images are harder. The book can be read in public, but will be enjoyed more in private.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Fascinating Visit to Low-Life Paris in the 20th Century By Al Fresco Not as all-out erotic as I had hoped (most of the photos are pretty mild by today's standards, or lack thereof) but a nostalgic romp through Paris brothels and night clubs from the early 20th century through WW II......there are a lot of wonderful photos and drawings anyway, some probably quite rare, and the book is well written by a Cal /Berkeley professor who really knows and loves that era. Famous characters of the time are highlighted and there's a large section on "Gay Paree," which has not been covered well before as far as I know. The chapter on German Occupation of Paris during WWII is especially interesting, and how it was business as usual in the Paris sex industry despite the War. There are lots of French slang words for the sex workers and their madams, the houses themselves, etc. that may only be of interest to French speakers, who would understand the double-entendre humor involved. I really enjoyed it but feel it would have limited appeal for today's "America Today Me First" generation with no memory of what Vietnam did to American morals and the Vietnamese, let alone World War II. It's a large, thick paperback.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A view of the past By Eugene Carr I found this to be an interesting book to read, but a little hard to follow the timeline. The book is organized by topics rather than a strict time sequence - while that is of interest in the discussion of what was going on, it was not easy to fit together the timing of all the subjects discussed. I was not sure how to view the authors likes or dislikes of the subject that was being discussed - this subject can have several strong feelings on both sides. I finally came away with the feeling, right or wrong, that he did not like the subject, much less the world, of prostitution very well - much innuendo, if not direct language, seemed to put in a negative light, what for it's time, was a normal part of the life of Gay Paree.

Best Ebook PDF The Stranger by Albert Camus: A Critical Introduction (Revised Edition), by Ray Moore M.A.

The Second Edition of this popular critical study has been significantly expanded and completely revised, making it the most thorough single-volume study of Camus’ classic novel. A Critical Introduction places Camus’ ideas in context. Part One shows the development of his thought in the early essays, the unpublished “A Happy Death”, the plays “Caligula” and “The Misunderstanding”, and the philosophical work “The Myth of Sisyphus”. Building on this foundation, Part Two gives a detailed, consistent reading of “The Stranger”. The aim throughout, is to explain the meaning that Camus intended his text to have, thus meeting the needs of both the general reader and the student up to graduate level. This guide is thought provoking and encourages the reader to develop their own ideas about interpreting the central themes of the text.

Miller, Ph.D. Ray Moore: The Stranger — Critical IntroductionCamus consistently avoided explaining The Stranger, leaving the work to us, the readers, of understanding the protagonist, drawing moral implications from the progression of here-and-now critical incidents described so clearly in the text, drawing inferences about the author’s intentions, or accepting any of the narrative’s widely varying, and hotly debated, interpretations. In this revised edition of the Critical Introduction, Ray Moore provides us with a coherent and comprehensive framework for continuing our own work — and for deepening our appreciation of this great novel. Moore integrates at least three levels of understandings, implications and interpretations. At the center is the text itself — essentially, the protagonist’s descriptions, although the line between Meursault and Camus may be seen by some readers to become less clear later in the novel — with provocative questions (honed clearly from Moore’s extensive classroom experiences with able and highly motivated students), helpful translations, and notes “between the lines.”Surrounding the text, the author provides extensive descriptions of historical and geographical contexts, both from the Algeria / France / Europe and especially from Camus’ own notebooks, correspondence, and publications during the decade or more from the mid-1930’s to the immediate post-WWII years. In particular, Moore explores the clear thread from Camus’ essays and plays written before and during the war years, especially Caligula, The Myth of Sisyphus, and The Misunderstanding to The Stranger — and the place of that thread in the first (“Absurd”) cycle of Camus’ incomplete writing plan. Finally, Moore assembles and assesses extensive, ongoing debates among critics, scholars, philosophers and public intellectuals about The Stranger, focused on questions surrounding the meaning — or absence of meaning — of life and death that arise from Camus’ work. This critical introduction gives us welcome help and powerful encouragement in reading The Stranger, and leaves plenty of room for lots more work on our part.(This edition appends chapter notes, commentaries on Sartre’s “Explication of The Stranger” and Visconti’s 1967 film, a useful “Guide to Further Reading” and an extensive Bibliography.)

Truly a comprehensive guide to fully understanding and appreciating this masterpiece. The Critical Introduction by Mr. Moore thoroughly and masterfully examines and analyzes the text and also includes insightful questions for discussion in the classroom. As a teacher, this guide is invaluable, but I would also recommend this book to anyone as a companion to reading The Stranger!

Dr. Bernie Siegel has long observed how relationships with animals have helped his patients, alleviating their suffering and heartbreak. Now, he’s gathered many inspiring true stories, including delightful tales from the “Siegel Family Zoo” where “squawks, purrs, chirrups, squeaks, barks, and so on” fill the house. Other stories reveal animals as teachers and messengers, doctors and nurses, healers and miracle workers, and often as guileless clowns. Bernie writes that animals are here to show us how to be nonjudgmental and live better, healthier lives. Let these stories teach you, and apply their lessons to your daily life. If you have an animal, an appreciation for the inspirational, or simply the need for a smile, you’ll treasure this celebration of animals as a source of love, wisdom, and miracles.A portion of the publisher’s proceeds from this book will aid Ark Angel Society.

Wonderful stories written by animal lovers for animal lovers By Tiny Thought Guy Although traditionally trained as a medical doctor and surgeon (for humans), Dr. Bernie Siegel has spent much of his life advocating for patient’s ability to heal themselves through lifestyle changes and increased awareness. To help create this awareness, Bernie wrote numerous books; among them: “Love, Medicine and Miracles”; “How to Live between Office Visits”; “A Book of Miracles” ; “365 Prescriptions for the Soul” and now, “Love, Animals & Miracles.”Perhaps the last book on the list appears to be different from the others, yet it is actually very much related because research continues to show that having animal companions can greatly improve our health and well-being. However valid this connection may be though, the messages shared in “Love, Animals & Miracles” is not derived from research in a clinical setting: the essence of this book lies in the deep, spiritual connections that every animal lover has felt with their kindred furry/feathery/finned companion. Everyone who has (or had) a pet companion knows that there is a bond that exists beyond logic and explanation, a connection where these companions improve the quality of our lives in so many ways.As Bernie so profoundly explains in the Introduction, “… animals are the teachers and messengers. They are the doctors and the nurses. They are the miracle workers, the companions, and the sources and subjects of love. They are the guileless clowns who make us laugh. They are the extraordinary guides who pass through the curtain between life and death with their consciousness, showing us the true meaning of timeless eternity” and in “Love, Animals & Miracles” you’ll not only read stories about the “Siegel Zoo”, but you will also share in the stories submitted by animal companions from all over the world. Some of the stores are humorous and some of the stories will undoubtedly bring a tear to your eye; however, every story included in this book reminds us of the inseparable bond that can exist between any living creatures when we come from a place of love.

Reynolds Dr. Bernie Siegel has, once again, given us a book that assures us that healing and miracles are possible, especially when animals are involved. He reminds us that we all need animals in our lives in order for us to be well, happy, to find peace, and to heal. And that animal may be a horse, hatchling turtle, a dog or cat, perhaps a bird or snake. In this remarkable collection of true accounts, we meet people who have been deeply touched by the animals in their lives and through their stories we emerge wiser and kinder. This is a book you will want to read and reread, to give to all those you know who love animals or are perhaps greatly in need of comfort and inspiration. As books of animal stories go, this one tops the list. It is not to be missed.

By Michael Sandler Inspire Nation Host Love is not a strong enough word for this book. I recently had the honor of interviewing Dr. Bernie Siegel for Love, Animals & Miracles on our Inspire Nation Show, so I was fortunate enough to get an early copy of this book. Woo Hoo! I'm so glad I did, and that I got to interview Bernie. If you have a pulse, this book which touch your soul. You'll never look at animals quite the same way again. It'll transform your relationships with your pets, with others pets, and with every animal you see or that comes into your life. You'll see them as guides, messengers, healers, teachers, best-friends, and of course confidants.I love the stories Bernie shares, and I love being brought into the Siegel Family Zoo. Random By Amazon Customer Written by: Carre Armstrong GardnerPublished by: TyndaleWhen I read about Better All the Time I thought that it sounded like something that I would love to read. This book focuses on a family of adult children and all of the issues that various characters face.Who the book is for:Those who enjoy reading about numerous characters in one book. What I liked:The family is interesting and I like the interactions between all of the characters.Parts of the book are interesting or touching. The story of Sephy and her weight loss is inspirational. What I didn’t like:This book is quite random, with a lot of stuff included that really doesn’t need to be in it.This book didn’t really touch me in the way that I thought that it would when reading about it.One of the characters in the book is gay, and I didn’t really see a place for this in a Christian book. The other characters just act like that lifestyle is completely normal and accepted, despite their faith. My conclusion:Overall, this is an okay read.I give Better All the Time 3 out of 5 stars.I received this book free to review from Tyndale Blog Network. Wish I had read the first book By Jen I recently read Better All the Time, by Carre Armstrong Gardner, which is a fictional book about the Darling family, the second book of the series. Without having read the first book, the first few chapters were a whirlwind of character introductions and hints at back stories untold in this book. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel.Simply put, I was hooked. I wasn't sure if I would like the book in the first few chapters, as the story seemed convoluted and full of many strong characters. But a few chapters later, I couldn't put the book down. Thankfully I grabbed it for a day of travel and waiting, so I had no reason to stop reading. The story line and the characters were very engaging, and I was quickly absorbed into their adventures and mishaps. The writing style is clear and realistic, and the author doesn't shy away from difficult issues. All of the characters are flawed people, with their own set of struggles and baggage. You see realistic family relationships in the book, from pressure to get married to an estranged sibling. The book doesn't center around a picture-perfect family, but rather around a realistic family, one you might find in your house at Thanksgiving, or in your neighbor's home. It was refreshing to see the family face their own challenges and work them out. At the end was a sense of redemption and hope, even though it wasn't necessarily a fairy-tale ending. The ending left a few loose ends, which leaves room for a sequel. Considering how much I enjoyed Better All the Time, I would definitely love to read the next book about the Darling family. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys uplifting and encouraging novels. You won't be disappointed!I received a complimentary copy of this novel by Tyndale in exchange for my honest review.
