The Second Edition of this popular critical study has been significantly expanded and completely revised, making it the most thorough single-volume study of Camus’ classic novel. A Critical Introduction places Camus’ ideas in context. Part One shows the development of his thought in the early essays, the unpublished “A Happy Death”, the plays “Caligula” and “The Misunderstanding”, and the philosophical work “The Myth of Sisyphus”. Building on this foundation, Part Two gives a detailed, consistent reading of “The Stranger”. The aim throughout, is to explain the meaning that Camus intended his text to have, thus meeting the needs of both the general reader and the student up to graduate level. This guide is thought provoking and encourages the reader to develop their own ideas about interpreting the central themes of the text.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Comprehensive Framework for Reading Camus' The Stranger. By John A. Miller, Ph.D. Ray Moore: The Stranger — Critical IntroductionCamus consistently avoided explaining The Stranger, leaving the work to us, the readers, of understanding the protagonist, drawing moral implications from the progression of here-and-now critical incidents described so clearly in the text, drawing inferences about the author’s intentions, or accepting any of the narrative’s widely varying, and hotly debated, interpretations. In this revised edition of the Critical Introduction, Ray Moore provides us with a coherent and comprehensive framework for continuing our own work — and for deepening our appreciation of this great novel. Moore integrates at least three levels of understandings, implications and interpretations. At the center is the text itself — essentially, the protagonist’s descriptions, although the line between Meursault and Camus may be seen by some readers to become less clear later in the novel — with provocative questions (honed clearly from Moore’s extensive classroom experiences with able and highly motivated students), helpful translations, and notes “between the lines.”Surrounding the text, the author provides extensive descriptions of historical and geographical contexts, both from the Algeria / France / Europe and especially from Camus’ own notebooks, correspondence, and publications during the decade or more from the mid-1930’s to the immediate post-WWII years. In particular, Moore explores the clear thread from Camus’ essays and plays written before and during the war years, especially Caligula, The Myth of Sisyphus, and The Misunderstanding to The Stranger — and the place of that thread in the first (“Absurd”) cycle of Camus’ incomplete writing plan. Finally, Moore assembles and assesses extensive, ongoing debates among critics, scholars, philosophers and public intellectuals about The Stranger, focused on questions surrounding the meaning — or absence of meaning — of life and death that arise from Camus’ work. This critical introduction gives us welcome help and powerful encouragement in reading The Stranger, and leaves plenty of room for lots more work on our part.(This edition appends chapter notes, commentaries on Sartre’s “Explication of The Stranger” and Visconti’s 1967 film, a useful “Guide to Further Reading” and an extensive Bibliography.)

Truly a comprehensive guide to fully understanding and appreciating this masterpiece. The Critical Introduction by Mr. Moore thoroughly and masterfully examines and analyzes the text and also includes insightful questions for discussion in the classroom. As a teacher, this guide is invaluable, but I would also recommend this book to anyone as a companion to reading The Stranger!
