OVER THE PAST 40 YEARS I HAVE EASILY READ HUNDREDS OF BOOKS BY CHRISTIAN AUTHORS AND HAVE FOUND THIS ONE (AS WELL AS OTHERS BY THE SAME AUTHOR) TO BE OF THE MOST ENCOURAGING AND SPIRITUALLY ENHANCING AVAILABLE.ALL THE MATERIALS THAT I HAVE READ BY J.R. MCDUFF HAVE PROVEN TO BE WELL WORTH MY TIME AND INVESTMENT. I SELDOM WRITE REVIEWS, BUT JUST COULD NOT LET THIS BOOK BE SO SUPERFICIALLY DISMISSED WITHOUT AT LEAST A MINOR PROTEST--CHRIST IS PREEMINENT IN ALL OF MCDUFF'S LITERATURE!

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Words of Jesus By Randall J. Rogers MacDuff's Mind and Words of Jesus is one of the most soul searching and profound books I've ever read. I have probably 15-20 of J R MacDuff's books and they are all written devotionally. His style is very clear and deeply devotional. The writer of the 1-star review admitted he/she hadn't even read the book. If the writer of that particular review is looking for the words of Jesus and no more - stick to reading the Bible!

"An assured and bittersweet coming-of-age tale with a vivid sense of time and place."—Books + Publishing

It's the 1950s and Sylvie lives in Burley Point, a fishing village on Australia's wild southern coast. She tries to make sense of her brooding mother and her father's violent moods. She worships her older brother Dunc, but when he goes missing, Sylvie is terrified it's her fault. The bush and the birds and the endless beach are Sylvie's only salvation, apart from her teacher, Miss Taylor.

Sylvie is a charming narrator with a big heart and a sharp eye for the comic moment. In the tradition of Anne Tyler, The Lost Child is a beautifully written story about family and identity and growing up. It's about what happens when the world can never be the same again.

In the style of Henry James's masterful What Maisie Knew, Suzanne McCourt's novel reveals the perspective of a sensitive observer of irresponsible adults.

After a career in teaching, marketing, public relations, and private employment, Suzanne McCourt is a full-time writer. She lives in Melbourne, Australia, with her family, and is the publisher at Posh Dog Publishing. The Lost Child is her first novel.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Bitter- Sweet Lost Child By Hazel Edwards Bitter-sweet ,sustained childhood viewpoint of Sylvie who is not the only 'lost' child in this story. Childhoods can be full of lost opportunities and casual kindnesses and cruelties. You know she will survive but the author paces the tragi-comedy in a way that reassures the reader who wants to keep reading. The writing style reminds me of the quality of Ruth Park's writing in evoking the strengths and weaknesses of a small community and the tragedies and humour amongst the everyday. Both the mother and father are credible characters whose motivations are real, but the resilience of the mother is tested. The Coorong wetlands setting is well drawn and the sense of place conveyed for the period too. Even Elvis gets a mention. And evangelist Dr Billy Graham. So does the death of JFK. A multi-layered novel with symbolism which stays with you after the last page.A significant writer with compassion. Highly recommended for adult and YA readers.Hazel EdwardsNational Reading Ambassador

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. ‘You can forget everything if you want to.’ By Jennifer Cameron-Smith The novel opens in the 1950s, when Sylvie is five, and trying to make sense of her world. Sylvie lives with her parents and older brother Dunc, in a fishing village south of Coorong on Australia’s south coast. Her mother seems preoccupied, her father is moody, and Dunc has his own world to explore and occupy. Sylvie is invisible to her father, who has eyes only for Dunc, and for the woman he has taken up with who lives across the lagoon.‘My father has gone. He has taken his brown skin and flashing eyes, his laughs and shouts and silences.’When Sylvie’s father leaves, her mother tries to cope by cleaning obsessively. But it is not enough, and she is taken away to hospital for treatment. Sylvie stays with her grannie until her mother returns home.‘Mum has come home with short hair and no words.’When Dunc goes missing, Sylvie is terrified that somehow it is all her fault. Her mother takes refuge in her house, her father is always angry. Sylvie finds some peace in the bush or on the beach, trying to understand what has happened and why. There is no escape in such a small community and while Sylvie is old enough to describe what she sees and feels, she is not able to make sense of it. Her family has collapsed, her brother is missing - it must be her fault.Ms McCourt captures Sylvie’s perspective beautifully. The ego-centred world of a five year old is replaced by the uncertainty and turmoil caused when her father leaves, her mother becomes ill and her brother disappears. If Sylvie is to be free herself, then she must also leave.Seen through Sylvie’s eyes, the world is beautiful, dangerous and inexplicable. As a reader, I’m torn between understanding what Sylvie sees and experiences, trying to make sense of it for a child, and trying to make sense of it for my adult self. I wanted Sylvie to escape - in order to find herself - but I wanted her to stay so I could make sense of her experiences. Dunc is not the only lost child in this story, and as it becomes part of a reader’s reality, it’s difficult not to relate at least on some level to Sylvie’s story. This is the kind of novel which, once read, lingers. There’s nothing simple about it.Jennifer Cameron-Smith

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Engaging coming of age journey By Dr R The Lost Child offers an insight into a time and place no doubt familiar to those Australians of a certain age. It provides a rich exploration of family, a sense of community and the importance of dreams as its glides through the life of a charming and spirited leading character, Sylvie. The secrets and lies that embellish each of these elements evoke empathy for Sylvie’s real life coming of age journey. The characters are clearly crafted and their interaction depicts incidents, conversations and causal exchanges juxtaposed with substantial challenges emerging from relationship breakdowns, to personal loss and bewildering decisions. The wit and nostalgia reveal a heartfelt appreciation of regional Australia life. The joys, the mysteries and the revelations ring true. Images of the landscape are precisely conjured and are integral to fully revealing the surprising, the remarkable and the mundane aspects of coastal life during the 1960s.The conversations release the nuances of a child’s rich internal life and the impacts of external pressures at a pace and with a voice that is convincing and engaging. This worthy debut novel certainly tempts the reader to ask ‘what happens next?’ to this cast of characters.

Long Way Back: A Novel, by Brendan Halpin

From Publishers Weekly Halpin (Donorboy) puts sensitive, studious Francis Kelly in the loving if slightly snarky hands of his older sister, Clare, who tells Francis's story with tenderness, admiration and affection, along with an occasional barb. Fran, a Catholic youth-group leader, is 35; his wife, Lourdes, has recently died of cancer, before they could start a family. Clare, taking care of Fran as he tries to climb out of depression, describes their youth near Cincinnati (both now live in the Boston suburbs), including two hippie parents and a shared passion for punk and related forms of rock. As Fran comes back to himself by connecting with a local rock chick 12 years younger (and whom he used to mentor), Clare has her own vicissitudes, dealing with marriage and children while working as an ER nurse, lamenting her lost youth and acting as the family liaison. Clare rolls her eyes as Fran takes up the bass and gets a tattoo, but is mostly nice to him. Halpin matches his prose to Clare's ordinariness and makes the progress of Fran's band less of interest in and of itself than as a regressive coping mechanism that works. Clare herself is not quite compelling, but her care for Fran carries the book. (On sale Jan. 3) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist Unexpected death and the grieving process have long been preoccupations of author Halpin, who lost his wife to breast cancer. In his new novel (following Donorboy, 2004), devout Catholic and hard-core Ramones fan Francis suffers the ultimate loss when his loving, supersmart wife is felled by a brain aneurysm. The story of his healing, which takes many surprising turns, is told in the funny, sympathetic voice of his sister, Clare. For a devastated Francis, onetime church youth-group leader, the road to recovery starts with a bass guitar and eventually includes a tattoo and membership in a gay punk band whose most popular song is dedicated to describing the allure of Astroglide lubricant. It's a testament to Halpin's skill for mixing the sacred with the profane that such scenes are often juxtaposed with others featuring Clare's whispered prayers and refreshingly unabashed declarations of faith. Similarly, Clare's irreverent sense of humor acts as a check on the bathos forever threatening to swamp the narrative; nevertheless, some readers will be completely undone by this tender novel's final passages. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. You gotta get this book! By Trixie Belle I absolutely loved Long Way Back. Written in a totally original voice, this story of love, loss and ultimately, redemption, is tender and poignant and thoroughly enjoyable. I could completely relate to the characters. I mean, who hasn't questioned their faith after bad things have happened, or wanted to totally reinvent themselves when the old version just didn't seem to be working out anymore? Bottom line: You gotta get this book. Also, a warning--read the last chapters somewhere private...I was in a public place and everyone wondered why I was crying.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. fantastic book By Mark Oestreicher i bought this book a year or more ago based on a recommendation in a review (in some magazine). of all the fiction i've read in the past month or so, this was BY FAR my favorite.the book is narrated by the sister of an adult male (i'm always impressed when a male author can write convincingly from a female narrator's perspective) who meets, marries, then loses an amazing wife to cancer. really the book is about his "long way back" to life, through and semi-out of a deep and massive grieving process.as an added bonus, the brother is a catholic youth worker who mostly loses his faith through this process. but the narrating sister keeps her faith (so it's not a slam on religion or faith). there's a good splash of punk rock and band stuff thrown in the mix, which added fun. lots of great reflections on dying and death (the sister is also a hospice nurse), grief, families, faith, healing, and how events can completely redirect our lives.i highly recommend this great book!

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. fictional reality=perfection By Rose Ann Nelson I have read most of Mr Halpin's books and find they all have that same haunting realism that you know is not fiction. This is an author who writes from the heart not only his own but through experiences that have touched all of us in our own lives one way or another. This is a book you want to put down while reading to savor it but you can't put down because you need to be "in" it to the end. So, give yourself some me time,a nice warm beverage and just enjoy.

If your child has recently been diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), or if you believe your child may have ODD, then this book is for you!

Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is a disorder where a child shows a constant display of negativity, defiance, disobedience and downright violence towards their parents, teachers, or any other authority figure. When a child has ODD, they will often be persistently stubborn; resisting any request or directive made by an adult. They will be unwilling to compromise or negotiate with adults, or even with their peers. These children will do things just to test your patience and limits, and will always refuse to accept that they have done something wrong even when they clearly have. The important thing to understand is that your child is not intentionally devilish. They simply believe in their heart that the requests you make of them are unjust and unreasonable. Therefore, saying no is the best thing to do from their perspective. Often, this kind of behavior will cause the child to suffer socially, academically and, most importantly, emotionally. Luckily, this disorder is treatable, and with proper guidance, a parent can achieve great progress with his or her child. If you are a parent who has a child with ODD, then this book will show you some ways you can cope with and treat your child so you can have a peaceful and cooperative home once again.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. States the obvious in 58 pages By Lini I wish I would not have spent money on this. I have a child diagnosed with ODD and ADHD. I read the reviews and thought this might be helpful. I cannot tell what license or degree the author has, but it is written about a 9th grade level. It is 58 pages in length and the suggestions I gleaned from the one hour it took me to read this book were as follows: don't get violent with your child (obviously), lock yourself in a bathroom if your child makes you feel unsafe (okay, not sure how that helps) and my favorite "calmly tell the child what you need." Anyone who has a child with ODD knows that your voice cannot be heard over the screaming and threats that come from your little Angel. The book finishes with one more nugget of knowledge: get mental health support for yourself and your child (as if you had not already done that). There, I just saved you $9. This book is so bad that I'm not even donating it to Goodwill because I think that parents shouldn't waste their time/hopes thinking that this is a viable resource.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A parent who knows what it's like By angie y roberts This book is a good starting point for parents of a child with ODD. The book is easy to read and offers lots of useful advice. Some of the suggestions are vague, however and I take exception to the idea that seeking counselling should be a "last resort."

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This book is a joke! By Debora Worth I have no idea who this "author" is. Not only is the content juvenile, self evident, and repetitive, the writing is appalling. It is more like a bad blog post, one which I don't think would get much following. A complete waste of money.

Why Teach Your Children Mindfulness?

Whether you are a teacher of young children or a parent, you will find that mindfulness exercises is a great way to help children master their emotions. In fact, in a study conducted in one of the California schools, it was found that children who have gone mindfulness training for as little as two to three weeks already exhibited positive changes. In one specific classroom, from being the most notorious class with the most number of students visiting the principal, after three weeks of mindfulness training, the class had zero students who visited the principal.

That’s how effective this mindfulness training for kids is.

So, what are you getting from this book?

  • Essentially, you will learn the various benefits that mindfulness training can impart to you and the children that you teach. This encompasses a wide array of health benefits, cognitive benefits and even psychological benefits.
  • If you think that teaching kids is hard, you will be surprised just how easy it is for them to embrace mindfulness. So far, based on various scientific research and mindfulness training for children, there was not much resistance coming from these little ones.
  • In this book, you will be given step by step instructions on how to go about mindfulness training for children.
  • What I love most is that to make the transition easier for you especially when it comes to teaching mindfulness to children, included in the book are tips before you begin teaching. These tips will help you ensure success and effective mindfulness training. It also includes a generic script that you can build upon as you grow better and get newer inspirations for your mindfulness exercises.
  • Lastly, this book will not be complete without listing various mindfulness meditation exercises that are appropriate for school age children and mindfulness exercises for teens too. All these exercises are easy to follow, use and apply.

By Doi Marshall This book answers my need on how to model mindfulness to my children, while learning the tools of taking care of myself. I think all parents and educators should read it. If not to follow it's lessons precisely, at least to get a feel for the idea of increasing mindfulness in our children and our teaching. Do not let the idea that it is based in Buddhism fool you into thinking that any other religious person could not benefit from it. I have found that most Buddhist teachings I have read firmly believe that no one should convert to Buddhism, but they feel that some of their practices could be adapted to many other religious groups and also to secular groups such as the standard school classroom and therefore respectfully share their ideas. Here in the US we are so hurried all the time and never disconnect. It would do us all a great deal of good to stop and follow our breath more often. It would also do us some good to look at things from more than one perspective and gain understanding of our fellow humans on this earth.

I'm still not quite sure I understand it myself, but I'm not a child expert either. Getting a child into a neutral state by meditation is fascinating and I would be very, very interested in seeing this practice in action. In reading it, it certainly makes sense and in the beginning of the book it gives tips to the adults to prepare them how best to do this. I'm in my golden years now and came from a different time, but I try and keep an open mind. Fascinating topic and reading!

The last day of Circuit Court was over at Kingsborough. The jury had vanished from the semicircle of straight-backed chairs in the old court-house, the clerk had laid aside his pen along with his air of listless attention, and the judge was making his way through the straggling spectators to the sunken stone steps of the platform outside. As the crowd in the doorway parted slightly, a breeze passed into the room, scattering the odours of bad tobacco and farm-stained clothing. The sound of a cow-bell came through one of the small windows, from the green beyond, where a red-and-white cow was browsing among the buttercups.

Early Glasgow By Bomojaz Nick Burr is the son of a poor farmer; he is about to apprentice in a law firm when he decides to take a job in a store instead (his family needs the money). He gets involved in politics and is dynamic and honest, and soon rises to the governor's chair. Later he is killed by a mob about to lynch a black man as he tries to intervene to stop it. Nick's love is for Eugenia Battle, whom he pursues throughout the novel; she is an upper-class girl who decides to marry within her own class and Nick's loss. Already in this early novel Glasgow is establishing two of her major themes as a writer: the role of race and class in Southern society. Her gift as a writer is evident here, though the story is slow in spots. Better efforts were to come.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Old fashioned Glasgow By A Customer Glasgow takes the reader on a lengthy journey of the life of Nicholas Burr. Burr is the son of a poor, rural Virginia farmer and is considered low class. However to raise above his social class he reads books and buddies up with the local judge, who tutors him in law. The novel follows Burr's life as he grows up with his friends and the girl next door, Eugenia. Inevitably, there is a bond between the two but as life takes its course she realizes that he is too low class for her. Burr winds up being elected to the assembly and winds up as the governor of Virginia. He is loved and respected by the people despite his enemies' politics and is known as an honest man. However, Eugenia, his childhood sweetheart, had ran out of patience waiting for him to become success and marries someone else. She is in a loveless marriage, but realizes she missed marrying someone with more character. I found the book long-winded. I had a hard time getting any excitement out of the book, until almost 60% of the way through and then it was only a small blip on the radar. However, there were some picturesque descriptions of rural Virginia that were well done (the hard cover edition also includes at least 20 black and white photos). Reading the dialog from the Negro servants was also a battle in translation and most of the time not worth the effort. Nicholas was indeed a heroic character worthy of admiration but I found his treatment rather adumbrated. Like other Glasgow books, Glasgow's main characters always seem to be happy when they get over "the love thing" and wind up alone.

I was going to have a small procedure and all that surrounded it was just mind-numbing. For 2 weeks I was frazzled. This book was such an amazing help to me on that day and for days that followed.I liked that the technique is available to everyone and that there isn't any huge learning curve. I mean, after all, it can't be that relaxing if you are frustrated trying to learn how to become relaxed, right? =)I was relieved that the book had pictures to show the locations of each of the twelve points. Each of the twelve points were also explained by "body/organ" and "action" to give you a better idea of what benefits each point provided. I also liked that the treatments were broken in to two sections also WITH PHOTOS. One was self-treatment, the other was treating other people. The technique was truly simple and easy to follow and can be done in as little as 10-15 minutes. Just keep in mind this is a time to relax so allow yourself to remain relaxed. Not ideal to use the technique and then head right in to Monday morning rush hour traffic. =)It has helped me tremendously, in just the short time I've been using it. SO glad I bought this book when I did!!

By Valerie L It's been harder and harder to deal with the stress of everyday life with the poor economy and I have been looking for ways to relieve the constant tension I feel. I went to my doctor months ago and she put me on anxiety pills. They do help but I needed a way to relieve stress without being medicated. My best friend is into natural healing and has opened my mind to older techniques. After all, modern medicine is not all natural. There are only so many pills a body can handle before it has adverse effects! Plus they are costly. This book was easy to follow, easy to learn with precise directions to the exact spot. The pictures also were a huge help. You can do this anywhere! There are 12 spots to remember but narrowed down to the few important ones if you can't remember it all. It also has a section about on headaches that would be useful to someone who get's frequent headaches. I was able to use the tips today after a huge fight with my daughter about chores- or lack thereof- and it came in handy. It's a great book to learn some alternate ways of dealing with stress and headaches that will work for most people. It doesn't hurt to try!
