At the heart of A Dream of Kings is Leonidas Matsoukas, operator of the Pindar Counseling Service ("Solutions provided for all problems of life and love"), proponent of wildly creative get-rich-quick schemes, passionately loving husband and father, equally ardent lover of the beautiful bakeshop proprietor Anthoula, incurable gambler, and incorrigible fighter. Matsoukas is a fiercely proud Greek immigrant with a zest for the temptations of his new home on Halsted Street in 1960s Chicago. He dreams of conquering the city but the tragic illness of his young son Stavros pits him against the larger opponent of fate. By turns comic and heartbreaking, A Dream of Kings combines the power of classical myth--a man raging against the gods--with the vitality, emotion, and joyous ebb and flow of our all-too-human lives. "The gods have chosen you for eternal disaster," Matsoukas's friend Cicero tells him, "but you take every act that has been prepared for your punishment and turn it into some kind of triumph." A Dream of Kings was first published in 1966. It was a New York Times best seller, translated into twelve languages, and made into a 1969 feature film starring Anthony Quinn and Irene Papas. This new edition includes a foreword from Dan Georgakas, retired director of the Greek American Studies Project at the Center for Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies at Queens College-CUNY and editor of the Journal of Hellenic Diaspora.

A Dream of Kings: A Novel, by Harry Mark Petrakis

Review "A classic novel."--Life Magazine"I have often thought what a wonderful basketball team could be formed from Petrakis characters. Every one of them is at least 14 feet tall."--Kurt Vonnegut Jr."Harry Mark Petrakis is good news in American literature. His style is in the classic manner. He writes about his characters with vigor and zest."--Issac Bashevis Singer"Petrakis . . . is true to himself. In his tales, real or imaginary, violence is measured by brotherhood, passionate hate by passionate love. And, in the end, it is man who, despite his weaknesses and his blindness, has a right to victory."--Elie Wiesel

About the Author Harry Mark Petrakis has been honored with the O. Henry Award, the Chicago Public Library's Carl Sandburg Award, and awards from the Friends of American Writers, Friends of Literature, and the Society of Midland Authors. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Aromatherapy for the four legged in the family By Denniger Bolton We use essential oils in our family preferring using them to taking commercial type medicines and when I saw this book by Sheryl Lewis about how to safely use essential oils for dogs, I had to get it. I had heard that a dog owner had to be wary of using them on pets. The author states that this is the case. Some oils are harmful and even dangerous, but she points out the oils that are beneficial for treating various maladies such as fleas, ear mites, ticks, skin disorders and infections and internal parasites, list under each an essential oil based remedy. The homemade flea collar made with a favorite bandanna and flea killing comb are great ideas and can be put to use immediately with the added benefit - it’s cheaper and better for the dog than buying a collar at the pet store. Be sure and read this book before you use these oils on your pets. For instance lavender is good for dogs but not for cats.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A real value! By Beran Parry This book is quite interesting and has a practical value for me. The writer goes over all of the basics of using your own essential oils and provides a short primer on carrier bases There is a lot of information about the basics of essential oils and how to use them for dog deodorizers, flea fighters, skin soothers, and nose protectors, changing the behavior of the dog. I couldn’t even imagine that I would be able to use oils in so many cases for dogs. So this book was an invention for me. I can’t wait to try what I have read from this book. I was amazed to learn that essential oil therapy is being recommended by many vets because it is a natural therapy for revitalizing, detoxifying and even has antiseptic properties.

Legend has it that Pancho Villa s grave was robbed and his head stolen in 1926. A gringo is credited with the theft, but Gus Corral s great-grandfather was there too. As often happens to Chicanos, his role was given short shrift. But the Corral family has taken care of the skull for as long as Gus can remember. It s a jolt when Panchito is stolen from his sister s house. It s the only connection to the old-timers of the family, so Gus knows he will have to get to the bottom of the disappearance, even if it means tangling with thieves and thugs.A variety of characters writers, attorneys, Vietnam vets, cops, soldiers populate these stories in which situations frequently aren t what they seem. An old man knows more about the disappearance of a neighbor than he lets on. A barber is involved in something that brings a ski-mask wearing, gun-toting hoodlum into his shop. And a cop accused of using excessive force hasn t told his family the whole truth. Many stories in this gripping collection feature Mexican Americans struggling with their circumstances as an ethnic minority in the United States. Others cover historical events, from the Mexican Revolution to an encounter with Jack Kerouac. All spotlight Ramos artistry and dexterity as he shifts from noir to historical and even ficcion rapida, or flash fiction. Spanning his acclaimed writing career, this volume includes Ramos first story published in 1986, White Devils and Cockroaches, which features an attorney who served as the prototype for Luis Montez, the protagonist in five of his award-winning novels. Manuel Ramos has a well-earned reputation for writing gritty stories about Latinos, stories that grab you by the throat. The richness of Ramos' work is evident in The Skull of Pancho Villa, a collection of previously published short stories. They range from an encounter with the mythical La Llorona to the rescue of a shoeshine boy by Jack Kerouac. The characters are a collection of seedy lawyers, drug dealers, hired hands, writers and ordinary people. The stories are clever and sometimes funny, but their real strength is the way they capture today's Latinos the talk and humor, the swagger and irony. The stories bring to life the contemporary culture of north Denver, the Southwest and Mexico. Ramos has a rich voice. He nails it.The Denver Post

And Manuel Ramos frequently comes up with some surprising endings for his tales. Some of his short stories can be labeled “Chicano noir.” They get dark and gritty as they move along through the struggles and ragged edges of Mexican-American life in the United States. Meanwhile, other stories in the collection explore different themes, such as the thoughts of a young Mexican-American soldier as he lays dying in Vietnam, and what happens when a Mexican-American shoeshine boy gets pulled into a barroom fight and is defended by the writer Jack Kerouac. In this collection, Ramos's stories are entertaining and easily accessible at a universal level. And he writes with a smooth clarity that looks simple on the page, yet is very difficult for most authors to achieve.(My thanks to Arté Público Press for providing a review copy.)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Variety Pack By Mark Stevens The Skull of Pancho Villa And Other Stories is a full-flavor variety pack of styles and moods. One story might pack a punch, the next might move your heart. This collection is a Manuel Ramos master class in effortless, engaging prose—no pretensions, all story. The scenes are frequently downbeat—but not all. The characters hang or thrive on the fringes and in the shadows—but not all. Most are set in Denver—but not all. L.A. shows up and El Paso, too. Most of these stories move in a world of green chile and sausage sandwiches, bar tops and back alleys, Tecates and Coronas.A few examples:In “No Hablo Inglés,” disbarred lawyer Manolo is hungover in a town he hates “but that wasn’t El Paso’s fault. I hated myself and that meant I hated wherever I woke up.” Manolo’s world is about to go south. In “White Devils and Cockroaches,” González is “damn good legal aid lawyer” but finds himself representing “crazies, weirdos, misfits, losers and plain folks who got taken.” His latest client works as a dishwasher at the White Spot. González, in short, is not the slick wolf of Wall Street. He’s the scraggly coyote of Capitol Hill—and he’s pretty damn close to his breaking point.“When the Air Conditioner Quit” (funniest short story title ever?) starts with a gunshot but that isn’t the only violence in this taut seven-page story of street rules, deception and nasty surprises. There are 23 three stories in four sections—Basic Black, Outlaws, Lovers and Chicanismo. One of the 23 is a poem (“The Smell of Onions”) but It starts with a line that is pure short story: “Shorty stumbled from the Rainbow Inn/Jenny would give him hell again.” That is a great opening couplet with a wonderful rhyme: and how can you not read more?I particularly enjoyed Ramos’ first-person stories, like the whole chunk (Chapter 5) from “Desperado—A Mile High Noir” that is a stand-alone tale in the title story here, “The Skull of Pancho Villa.” In first-person mode, Ramos goes into ultra-glide mode with his prose, so smooth and unassuming and laid-back. “You’ve heard the story, maybe read something about it in the newspaper or a magazine. How Pancho Villa’s grave was robbed in 1926 and his head taken.” This one is rife with the wry humor of Gus Corral, who may or may not be telling the truth. Many of the stories contain a few delectable noir touches, like this one from "If We Had Been Dancing:"“She licked the wet edge of her glass with a tiny pink tongue and did a move with her shoulders that could have been a dance step, if we had been on the dance floor, if we had been dancing.”Ramos makes it look easy. There’s no way to wrap these stories in one box with a neat bow, and that will keep you turning the pages. Some feature writers and lawyers (particularly in the “Bad Haircut Day,” a wonderful tale of street ethics) from mainstream society and several are creative, brisk sketches that show a poet’s heart. But when Gus Corral turns to the audience for a comment in “The Skull of Pancho Villa,” he sums up the feeling I get from many of the stories in this anthology, which gathers gems from nearly 20 years of Ramos’ works.“Okay,” says Corral, “right about now you’re thinking, call the cops, Gus. Don’t be a pendejo. Let the law handle it. But see, you don’t live in my world, man. Where I come from, the cops aren’t your first line of defense. You didn’t grow up constantly squaring off against cabrones like Jessie. You never had to accept that every lousy week another clown would challenge your manhood and you would have to beat or be beaten.”True fact—I don’t live in these worlds. But Ramos is our tour guide. And for that we can all be thankful. With extra hot green chile on top.

Revolutionaries, Jack Kerouac, and Killers By Mona AlvaradoFrazier Some unusual characters (Jack Kerouac, vets, cops, soldiers, tagger) show up in Manuel Ramos most interesting short story collection, including a mystery about the theft and subsequent whereabouts of Pancho Villa's head.I've enjoyed Ramos' four fiction and mystery/noir novels, so I was eager to read this collection. From the legend of La Llorona, and the robbery of Pancho Villa's grave in 1926 to the contemporary stories of a cop, burned-out attorney, a screenwriter, and gentrified neighborhoods, these stories capture the history, culture and language of the Chicano/Mexican in the U.S., specifically set in Denver, Colorado. The stories range from 'flash fiction,' to longer pieces and short or not, they all pack a scene with authenticity and interest.A copy of this collection was sent to me for an honest review by Arte Público Press.

With the exception of the book by Redd her story is the reason why I would recommend borrowing the book but the other stories made this book suck!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. One curve ball after another......, By Amber N. Love on LockDown by Redd- This was a story about a married couple of the streets, Candy and Raynail. When Raynail is set up for a crime he didn't commit it comes down to his street tough wife, Candy to make those responsible pay. I thought that this was a pretty good story. It wasn't my favorite in this anthology. In all honesty, I thought it was missing something. *I give it 2.5 Stars*Dangerous by Nikki Michelle- Now this story was wild!!! I loved it!! This story was about a young girl named Vix and her obsession with her teacher Alex. At least at first. As you delve into this story you find that there is so much more going on. Everything from a love entanglement so bizarre it will leave your mouth hanging open like, Huh???, to murder, with a side of revenge to wrap it up nicely. And right in the middle of it all is Vix. A girl who has been through much in her young life and found ways to survive. Even if it was not always the right thing. With the skeletons in her closet tumbling out, she has to try to keep it all together. I cannot wait for the next installment of this story. *I give it 5 Stars*Dirty Girls by Erick S Gray- This story was about two best friends and cousins Baby and G.G. This story tests their relationship as well as their morals. In the mix is Sampson. An Ex Marine who has death running through his veins. And when he gets involved in the lives of these two things go from bad to worse. I liked this story a lot. I felt that it had depth and it was written very well. *I gave it 4 Stars*

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Back to the Hood for the 7th time! By Ms. Read Love on LockDown by Redd- This was the first story in this anthology. I thought it was a decent read. Candy was a force to be reckoned with and I thought she was a very interesting character. This story could have used a little more depth and probably would have been better as a full novel.I give it 3 stars.Dangerous by Nikki Michelle- This was my least favorite story and it was beyond weird.I felt like the author tried too hard to throw in twists that it made everything seem so far fetched. By the time I got done reading this I was beyond perplexed.I give it a 2.5Dirty Girls by Erick S Gray- As usual they saved the best for last and Erick did not dissapoint. This was the longest story in the book but my favorite. Everything was on point from the character development,plot,ending,etc...I loved this one and I give it a solid 4 stars. As a whole I rate this anthology a 3.5. I remember when the first couple of Girls from the Hood books came out and every story was fire. Now out of 3 stories you only get one great one. Even though anthologies are a good way to sample a new authors work I think the publisher should stick with the vets when doing these because they are usually the ones who come with that one great story that actually saves the whole book, and thats just from my observation of being an avid reader of these anthologies.

"The truth is I hurt people. It's what I do. It's all I do. It's all I've ever done."

He lives in your community, in a nice house with a well-tended garden. He shops in your grocery store, bumping shoulders with you and apologizing with a smile. He drives beside you on the highway, politely waving you into the lane ahead of him.

What you don't know is that he has an elaborate cage built into a secret basement under his garage. And the food that he's carefully shopping for is to feed a young woman he's holding there against her will—one in a string of many, unaware of the fate that awaits her.

This is how it's been for a long time. It's normal…and it works. Perfectly.

Then he meets the checkout girl from the 24-hour grocery. And now the plan, the hunts, the room…the others. He doesn't need any of them anymore. He needs only her. But just as he decides to go straight, the police start to close in. He might be able to cover his tracks, except for one small problem—he still has someone trapped in his garage.

Discovering his humanity couldn't have come at a worse time.

Bukowsky "Normal" is Graeme Cameron's depiction of an unnamed killer who had a dysfunctional childhood, but has somehow amassed enough money to do whatever he wants. One of his favorite pastimes is abducting, killing, and dismembering young women. For reasons known only to him, he decides to lock a twenty-year old waitress in a cage for months, but does not immediately kill her, as he did her predecessors. His prisoner is tough and resilient and earns her jailer's grudging respect. Meanwhile, the perpetrator meets a supermarket cashier for whom he develops romantic feelings; she, in return, naively thinks that he is Mr. Right. Can he start over after having committed so many horrific crimes? Throughout the novel, our antihero shows a few traces of humanity, but nevertheless continues to leave a trail of bodies in his wake. He is clever and careful, but ultimately makes mistakes that may come back to haunt him. Some have compared "Normal" to the Dexter series, but Cameron does not have Jeff Lindsay's ability to successfully combine satire, dark humor, and suspense into a coherent narrative. Nor is the protagonist as ingratiating and likeable as Dexter Morgan. The author's central theme--someone may look and act perfectly ordinary, yet be mentally unbalanced--should be obvious to anyone who reads a newspaper. Even those who are fascinated by abnormal psychology may find themselves cringing when this predator slaughters innocent people. Nor does it help that the policemen trying to apprehend him are so dimwitted and ineffectual. Ultimately, it is not particularly enjoyable to spend three hundred pages in the company of this creepy sociopath, even if he has one or two redeeming qualities.

Not your typical serial killer By knittingmom Normal by Graeme Cameron is probably the first book I have read that begins with an extremely twisted serial killer and turns into a love story. While well written, it is difficult for me to wrap my head around what I read. I really enjoy twisted serial killer books, however I am not a real fan of romance novels and mixing the two creates a dilemma for me. Cameron creates the perfect serial killer, he could be anyone, he lives in a nicely kept house in a nicely kept neighborhood, he runs into neighbors everyday, and yet he has a torture chamber of sorts under his garage, however no one would suspect by his polite manner or appearance. So far do good, a lovely creepy serial killer and then the twist, he falls in love with the checker at the 24 hour grocery while shopping for food for his current victim who is caged in his secret basement. Normal begins with a deeply disturbed serial killer and then turns into an almost dark comedy of sorts, when Cameron has his killer fall in love with Rachel. I am not a psychiatrist, therefore I cannot say just how plausible this part is, however it is interesting to read how our sadistic murderer attempts to win Rachel while keeping a prisoner in his hidden basement. As odd as the storyline may sound, Cameron’s masterful writing and story lines keeps the reader fully engaged. My only regret is I did not have someone to discuss the ending of this book.

Usually, when that happens, I browse through other reviews to find points I can relate to, and things I see differently. But with this book, the opinions are so divided I still don’t know whether I like it, or I hate it.At its core, Normal is a book about a serial killer who blends in completely with his surroundings. However, he’s adept at kidnapping young girls, putting them in a cage and eventually killing him. So he’s a monster, in a way. But when this serial killer, who doesn’t get a name during the book – which works surprisingly well – meets a girl at the checkout from the 24-hour grocery and falls in love with her. He doesn’t want to kill anymore, he doesn’t want to hunt people anymore, all he wants to do is love this girl. But he has a few problems. Like the girl he has hidden in his basement. The girl he just killed. The police right on his heels. So, I like the premise. A serial killer who suddenly doesn’t want to kill anymore. I like it, but I’m not buying it. Especially not the way it’s written here, with the whole falling in love thing (which happens way too fast, and is unrealistic). The book reminded me of the final seasons of Dexter, when he falls in love with this female murderer. Things went downhill fast after that storyline was introduced, and the same thing happens in this book. The plot sets out for an excellent psychological thriller on the first few pages, but then turns into a laughable chase between the killer and the police, and him suddenly befriending not one but two women, and then having a third seemingly attracted to him as well. I’m sorry, but finding so many people attracted to a serial killer is almost impossible. And then the way the police handles things? That was laugh out loud hilarious. I’m all for dark humor, but it needs to be realistic, and that’s what this book is lacking. We also never get a back story into the killer’s mind. Why does he kill these women? Why hold them in a cage for so long? Nothing is ever explained, and since we spent the entire book firmly in the killer’s mind, we should get an explanation as to why he does the things he does. The characters are dull. Their behavior is erratic. The women never reach beyond the personality of a cardboard figure, especially not the love interest. The behavior of the characters kept contradicting itself, which was just plain annoying. On the other hand, I did enjoy the writing style, and I felt like, although we got no back story, I got a good impression of what went on in the killer’s mind. However, the story was just too unrealistic and the characters’ behavior too out of place for me to truly enjoy it. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

From renowned translators Richard Pevear and Lindsay Volokhonsky comes a new translation - certain to become the definitive version - of the first great prison memoir, a fictionalized account of Fyodor Dostoevsky's life-changing penal servitude in Siberia.

Sentenced to death for advocating socialism in 1849, Dostoevsky served a commuted sentence of four years of hard labor. The account he wrote afterward (sometimes translated as The House of the Dead) is filled with vivid details of brutal punishments, shocking conditions, and the psychological effects of the loss of freedom and hope but also of the feuds and betrayals, the moments of comedy, and the acts of kindness he observed.

As a nobleman and a political prisoner, Dostoevsky was despised by most of his fellow convicts, and his first-person narrator - a nobleman who has killed his wife - experiences a similar struggle to adapt. He also undergoes a transformation over the course of his ordeal, as he discovers that even among the most debased criminals there are strong and beautiful souls. Notes from a Dead House reveals the prison as a tragedy both for the inmates and for Russia. It endures as a monumental meditation on freedom.

All the themes for which he was later known, sin and humanity, violence and redemption, can be traced to this singular experience that transformed Dostoevsky's vision of the world. Though the book is a fictional account, it is based on Dostoevsky's four years in exile. And that personal connection comes through on every page. Perhaps in no other work of his storied career is his psychological analysis more honest and immediate as it is here. The book also serves as a stunning reminder of the power of the individual; his capacity for change, his capacity for empathy, ultimately transcend the bondage of institution. At a time when we are focused so much on changing institutions, reading this book may just provide some much needed perspective.

Dostoevsky's prison memoir is a marvelous, if torturous, work. Van Gogh, for instance, regarded it as an aesthetic model for his painting and for his experience of life. Simply, I don't see why another rendition is necessary, certainly not one by this crew.First of all, the title. Perhaps there is a characteristic pithiness in 'Notes from a Dead House' that P/V sometimes excel at, but I don't think it makes sense. What is a 'dead house'? It doesn't really connote the hell of the gulag. Nabokov, in his lecture on Dostoevsky, gave the title as "Memoirs from the House of Death". Jesse Coulson, whose translation is far superior to this one, comes elegantly close with her title "Memoirs from the House of the Dead".Actually, the important passage in which Dostoevsky alludes to the title is further botched by P/V:"Here you were in a special world, unlike anything else; it had its own special laws, its own clothing, its own morals and customs, an alive dead house, a life like nowhere else, and special people".Really...'an alive dead house'? Could there be a more inelegant combination of adjectives? Also, the designation of the prison house should not follow from the preceding list with just a comma - a colon or hyphen should be used to signal a change from the list to the sardonic comment. Oddly enough, P/V are addicted to the colon and semi-colon throughout this rendition, often to its detriment. Here is how Coulson rendered the same passage:"Here was our own peculiar world, unlike anything else at all; here were our own peculiar laws, our own dress, our own morals and customs, a house of the living dead, a life such as lived nowhere else, and people set apart."Yes, Coulson does not announce the title with special punctuation either - but she has not separated the prisoners from the descriptive items, and so it seems less awkward when a comment is then passed on the institution as a whole. Also, she has used 'peculiar' instead of 'special'. 'Peculiar' neatly connotes eeriness and idiosyncrasy. You'll notice that Coulson also specifies that isolation is the salient factor in the prisoners' alienation from society - "people set apart" as opposed to "and special people".This is a comparison of just one of the most recognizable passages from the book. But it is in some ways representative of P/V's more general flaws. Again, I don't see why there should be such a proliferation of translations of Russian literature. P/V print a new translation, reasoning that any new edition ought to benefit Dostoevsky scholarship. But really, the superabundance of renditions only serves to confuse the student of Russian literature. In any case, Garnett and Coulson are more elegant, as is Macduff's recent rendition.

Chase My love for the writing of Fyodor Dostoevsky has been passed down to the next two generations. It is no accident that one of my grandson's bears the middle name of Fyodor! The author's memoir about prison life - thinly disguised as a novel, has undergone a stunning and beautiful new translation at the hands of the gifted husband and wife team of Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky.Dostoevsky was initially sentenced to die by firing squad for his involvement in a Utopian socialist discussion group. The CTsar commuted his sentence to four years in Siberia. This book, "Notes From A Dead House" represents Dosoevsky's memories of those years, smuggled out of the prison in bits and pieces. Most striking in this narrative is the transformation that the aristocratic protagonist undergoes as he begins to recognize the common humanity that he shares with many of the prisoners - even with the least likable among them. The language in this marvelous translation is rich and evocative. The characters we meet are memorable and idiosyncratic, in many cases giving hints at future fictional characters like Raskolnikov and members of the Karamazov family. For any fan of Dostoevsky's remarkable oeuvre, this book is a welcome addition to your library.

Because while most books deal with reps, sets, techniques and exercises, Mental Muscle deals with the missing link – mastering the mind-body connection. Beyond the mechanics of strength training (the “hardware”) is the “software”, the essential programming, that will allow you to achieve more, a lot more, in a lot less time. This is where Mental Muscle makes its mark and it does so with a vengeance.Developing strength takes a lot more than progressively hoisting heavier and heavier loads. It takes the ability to tap into areas of the mind that have not been previously explored or mined. These untouched areas are the key to enhanced performance and accelerated learning – and you will only get there is you are able to unlock and use those areas. This is where Logan Christopher’s book Metal Muscle comes into play. Logan gives you the basics behind various Hypnosis and NLP techniques that will allow you access to areas of your mind that are currently under-utilized. These skills, explained in simple and easy to follow terminology, can mean the difference between average and excellent to the dedicated athlete. Logan explores a number of (surprisingly) effective ways to get near instant increases in strength, mobility and recovery. Tactics and techniques that Logan has fine-tuned are revealed in a manner, which with a little study and practice, can be applied to yourself or a client.NOTE: this is not your “run of the mill” training book and the information within is quite powerful. The catch is that you‘re going to need to study the techniques and practice them before they will be of any benefit to you. Training the mind is the same as training the body: you only get out of it what you put into it.

Once in a while a source comes along that is truly useful on a day-to-day basis. This is one of them. Nice work, Logan.

Tapping into your ultimate strength By strength builder In my early youth I was very weak, infact,I almost died in child birth, which created a life long interest in strength. Along the way I also created an interest in history and biography.and found that in some situations the two interests merged. My interest in history and biography many times led to a particular interest in individuals who exhibited super human strength under the most challenging of conditions. Such individuals exhibited strength far beyond muscular and contractile strength which is the very definition of NERVE FORCE. Some of these individuals would not be considered nice people by today's standards because they had to break through accepted social restraints to release their true potential strength. These individuals did not develop their strength through self resistance exercises, but through facing and overcoming challenges and stresses of various types. As Alois P. Swoboda said, “All evolution is a reaction to stress.”Alois P. Swoboda was a 19th century mind/body trainer and originator of many of the concepts that were later adapted by modern physical and mental training. One of his most iconic quotes was ,”All evolution is a reaction to stress ". This stress is not always from consciousexericse, but can also be from life experiences and can manifest itself physically, mentally, and psychologically even in people who may have followed what we would consider a healthy lifestyle. When this force combines both conscious and unconscious elements it is often referred to it a “nerve force” or “chi.”Two individuals that come immediately to mind in this category are Blackbeard the pirate and Rasputin, the Mad Monk of of Russia. TheirNerve Force and their desire to live were so strong that they were both very difficult to kill. It took 5 gun gun shots and 20 sword slashes to kill Blackbeard. In the early hours of December 30, 1916, a group of nobles lured Rasputin to Yusupovsky Palace, where they attempted to poison him. Seemingly unaffected by the large doses of poison placed in his wine and food, he was finally shot at close range and collapsed. A minute later he rose, beat one of his assailants, and attempted to escape from the palace grounds, where he was shot again. Rasputin, still alive, was then bound and tossed into a freezing river.“Mental Muscle” explores various types and dimensions of strength as well as giving numerous drills to develop various qualities of strength. Yet in the end as it suggests we are all unique and all different and as a result we must all through personal experimentation find our ownpath to release this ultimate personal force.

A WORTHY SPIRITUAL SHOT IN THE ARM By Liz Diamond A thoughtful, insightful compilation of short, spiritual messages representing an unlikely yet fantastic grouping: Einstein, Jesus, Rumi, Shakespeare, Buddha and more. I've already been helped by these writings! A worthy spiritual shot in the arm for people like me who like to mainline ah-producing-thoughts during a busy day from the masters! Elizabeth Wallace did the work--all wehave to do is read and enjoy....thank you, Elizabeth!Liz Diamond

Weinberg What a thought-provoking compilation of illuminations on what it means to be a good human being.I am a committed Jew, and wish Wallace had included quotations from at least one of the great Jewish sages (who are admittedly much less well-known figures). Without that reference point, I found myself wondering whether I would find myself moved, and whose teachings would speak to me the most. The answers: 1) Oh Yes! 2) Gandhi and BuddhaGandhi on Our Relationship to Nature:"Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed.""To forget how to dig the earth and to tend the soil is to forget ourselves."Gandhi on Our Relationship to Others:"It is easy enough to be friendly to one's friends. But to befriend the one who regards himself as your enemy is the quintessence of true religion."Buddha on Relationship to Self:"It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then the victory is yours.""Work out your own salvation. Do not depend on others." (How fascinating that Buddha understood this!)Buddha on Relationship to Others"In a controversy the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves.""Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die."While I began the foray into The Secrets as a "spiritual anthropologist" (e.g., this isn't "my religion," so I'll just dip my feet into the waters of others), my soul soon transcended those mind-limitations. Isn't that just what many of the quotes do too? Thank you.

Wallace gets better with each anthology By Ellery Davies This is Wallace's best publication to date! From the very start, I was fascinated by the definition of Sage: “Interested with the connection of man with the greater order”, and the author’s claim that a philosopher is effectively an aborted sage. (“One who searches but has not attained enlightenment”). Brilliant!I like the fact that Ms. Wallace does not elevate Jesus above other ”sages”. In fact, she refers to his divine birth as legend (This—from a devout Christian—but one who is able to reconcile her spiritual beliefs with facts and science).I love the illustrious explanation of Da Vinci and why she included him among the recognized sages. And, what awesome imagery! Wallace chose just the right quotations. Take this statement of Helen Keller—In my opinion, it is golden: > “You can burn my books and those of the best minds in Europe, but the ideas > will seep through a million channels and will continue to quicken the minds.”Adding Shakespear, Roosevelt, Keller, Gilbran and Kubler-Ross to the mix. Brilliant, again! Wisdom and enlightenment needn’t always spring forth from those who are recognized as spiritual leaders. Some readers may claim that this is not a book of sages, but rather a compendium of historical people that Ms. Wallace admires . Additionally, she executes a splendid job justifying and defending her choices, and explaining why the figures are more than just important—they are sagely.Personally, I feel that the author should have left Mother Theresa off that list, but perhaps this is just my own emotional boil. I believe that there are too many skeletons in her closet. But this certainly cannot lessen the good things that she stood for and the positive legacy in her wake.Great job, Ms. Wallace. Encore!

If you're ready to learn more about witchcraft and the enigmatic world of Wicca, then this book is for you!

Read on your PC, Mac, smart phone, tablet, or Kindle device. Many people's opinions about Wicca and witchcraft are based on Hollywood movies or fictional stories that are very far from the truth. Wicca is a belief system based on the ancient traditions and rituals of witchcraft. It is a way of life centered in love, harmony, respect for nature, and achieving balance with all things. Wicca is not about evil practices or satanism - which is, sadly, the popular image it bears today due to propaganda and misconception. Wicca is actually an experiential journey – what you believe at the end of your current lifespan may not even be what you believed when you first embarked upon it. The only thing that guides you is the fruit of your own experiences, as you strive to find the path which resonates strongest with your soul. Throughout this book, I'm going to clarify the myths about witchcraft, and I'll introduce you to actual Wicca practices and rituals. I'll also teach you how wiccans work with nature to improve harmony and balance all around rather than to harm anyone or anything. By the end of this book, you'll have a complete understanding of the framework – the entire structure – which you need to discover your own Wiccan self, and then how you choose to proceed with it beyond that point will be left entirely up to you. Because that is the true essence of Wicca – the freedom of beliefs in the search of the divine, and love and acceptance of your brothers and sisters, come what may. Let's get started!

It's a general over view to understand witchcraft in more of a Wiccan sense. It's based on Wicca. If you're looking for a place to start that will help piece together other things that you may have come across this is a great book. I would even recommend it for the younger readers of Wiccan parents. If your children are curious about your Wiccan beliefs this is a good general explanation guide. It debunks misconceptions, and touches on the Wiccan rede, covens, magical tools, setting up alters, and the wheel of life or the Sabbaths. Very easy read, and easy to follow. I recommend it for beginners looking for a place to start.

Clear Your Misconceptions About The Wiccan Culture By Stephanie I bought this book just out of curiosity to know what wiccan cultureor religion is all about. The book clarified many of the misconceptionsI had about it. One of it was that it is only for the women but the book affirmsthat it is as much for the males as for the females. The book teaches youthe art of casting spells as well. Nice addition to my knowledge !

She is really interested to know a lot about witchcraft and wizardry. Basically, that is the first reason why I got this but when I was to read it myself, wow. I cannot imagine myself liking this but I did! HOpe I get to see more books like this here at Amazon.
