Review "Old Hollywood glamour comes vividly to life in historian, novelist, and film blogger Lieberman's series debut, highlighting the effects of the 1950s Red Scare on the movie industry and the tragedies that happened off the silver screen. Aficionados of Alfred Hitchcock and Hollywood-themed mysteries will find this historical noir right up their alley."- Library Journal"All the Wrong Places weaves in historical events and controversial politics with remarkable subtlety. Like recent Philip Marlowe tribute The Black-Eyed Blonde, this goes way beyond mere period pastiche. The Cara Walden setup has a lot of promise, and indeed, Lieberman is halfway through a sequel. . . Settle in with some popcorn and a stack of DVDs: I predict plenty of nostalgic viewing--and reading--ahead."-Rebecca Foster of BookTrib.com"Yes, there is a death, and a mystery, and danger. But there is so much more to enjoy in All the Wrong Places. Open the novel and step into the time machine that Lisa Lieberman has created for you. Prepare for a magical ride back to the Hollywood of the 1940s and international film community of the 1950s. The coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953? Check. The marriage of Grace Kelly to Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956? Check. Enjoy."-Michael Kahn, award-winning author of The Sirena Quest and the Rachel Gold mystery series

McCarthy Era Mystery By Susan Van Kirk Lisa Lieberman's debut novel, "All the Wrong Places," has a 1950s narrator in Cara Walden, film star and daughter of her Hollywood director father and deceased mother, Vivien Grant. Cara struggles to find out whether or not her mother's untimely death was a suicide or murder. Her glamorous film star mother died in a drowning at their estate prior to the opening of the story. But Liebermann's book is much more than a mystery about a questionable death. It is historical fiction about the 1940s and 1950s in London, Sicily, the glamorous Hollywood film scene, Los Angeles, and the Cannes film festival. It is the 1950s--the McCarthy Era--and Cara's brother is a closeted homosexual and an avowed communist. His political affiliations and Cara's interest in finding out about her mother's death put their lives in danger. The author's love of history and her expertise in European history help her convey a wonderful setting for that period of time. She smoothly works in historical events such as the blacklisting, the coronation of Queen Elizabeth, the Cannes Film Festival, Grace Kelly's wedding, Hillary's climb up Mt. Everest, and the aftermath of the war in Europe. One of her strengths is her ability to convey this period of time as a backdrop for a mystery.Murder or suicide? The question will keep readers guessing until the very end. Liebermann is already working on another historical mystery, so stay tuned.

Part mystery novel, part historical drama, it is most of all the deftly-told story of Cara Walden, lonely and searching teenage child of a famous ex-pat American director and his glamorous actress wife. The story takes place in post-war London and Italy, settings artfully brought to life through finely wrought period details and by referencing historical events and figures in an unforced way. The mystery part is mainly Cara's need to find out who killed her mother at her father's famous London estate, something that took place when Cara was ten. But as Cara careens around Europe, pondering her mother's death, worrying about her communist brother (this is the McCarthy era) and her ailing father, she is also chasing her own artistic dream and looking for love (yes, in all the wrong places), and her inner journey is every bit as captivating as the book's core mystery. The story is told in Cara's own articulate and likeable voice, as she narrates from the perspective of a woman looking back.

Branch Jr. Lisa Lieberman’s debut novel is a mystery but also a tale of growing up internationally during the early and mid-50s. Cara Walden, our footloose young heroine, travels between Los Angeles, England, France, and Italy as she worries over the question of her mother’s untimely death. The film industry of the time is evoked as skillfully as the political and cultural atmosphere, but what I admire most is the fluidity of the narrative, which moves skippingly across time and space.
