About the Author Andrew Harkless was born in Orange, California in 1970, but raised in central Pennsylvania. He currently resides in coastal North Carolina. Many typical luxuries were put on hold in exchange for devoting unbridled time to writing with the ultimate goal of becoming a successful literary author along the caliber of his idol, John Irving—inarguably one of the greatest contemporary American storytellers. Andrew writes coming-of-age stories (regardless of the age) about Everyman characters who reach extraordinary crossroads where change is the only path. No matter how average a person may seem at first glance, everyone holds a remarkable story inside. His goal is to write stories for the Everyman, about the Everyman. Writing is an outlet for his innate passion—aka “inner dragon”—a love, and like any love, frustration accompanies. But, even love agitated by frustration seeks an audience…. “I wish to work for you in a way that you might discover how extraordinary you are in ways previously unrecognizable. And I want to write for you, to entertain you. Really think about it: the Everyman isn’t inside the magazine at the grocery store check-out. Many of the people we idolize inside those magazines (in my opinion) would gladly exchange their fame for, at the very least, anonymity, and, if honest, a chance at the life of an Everyman.”

By C M Anderson I love this book about a man who never ventured too far from home, and doesn't really know that he is just existing. This sounds just like me and a whole lot of people just like me. I read a great deal about the cruise ship industry, books from veteran travelers, and books on cruise "tips".Just like Jim Smith, I haven't been on a real vacation in ions. Andrew Harkless knows people very well. He should. He spent a large amount of time studying human behavior by being a bartender. He said that magazines are full of celebrities. Who he wants to focus on in his books is the everyman. Most of us are an "everyman". We can relate to middle aged John Smith. We can see at least a small piece of ourselves in him. That is why I believe this book can really resonate with us. Mr.Harkless conveys to us, through his book, the same lesson that Mr. Smith learns through getting out of his old reliable comfort zone and taking a cruise all by himself. When we allow ourselves to peek out of our cozy cocoons and try something scary and different, we may enjoy ourselves enough to obtain a complete metamorphosis. This is what John Smith discovered on his cruise. He experienced a whole new cruise culture that he may never had known about, otherwise. With 2,000 passengers and about 1,000 crew all aboard a small floating city together for seven days one is bound to meet some interesting people, share stories from their lives, bond, and become friends. John learns a lot about himself as much as he did about other people. He was able to spread his wings and fly. That, I believe, is what Mr. Harkless wishes for all of us. He gets his point across in a very fun and entertaining way. What is more fun and exciting than reading about a vacation upon a cruise ship. May we all get to take a cruise at least once in our lives. Live fearless and enjoy every moment of our live.I was given a free copy of this book to read and give my honest review.

I prefer nonfiction historical accounts, historical novels, current spy thrillers, and mystery novels. Occasionally, I’ll venture into a contemporary novel, but am usually disappointed. Not with this novel! The story line, with several subplots, is fascinating, fast moving, and has an interesting touch of mystery that keeps you reading on. It is about a middle aged, average but semi successful man who has slid into a routine lifestyle that has deadened his senses, destroyed his marriage, and nearly condemned him to a dreary and dead end life. He is prompted to go on a cruise and immediately starts to run into characters that will change his life. The entire supporting cast is well developed and several characters are quite interesting in themselves. There are good guys; bad actors all mixed up with deception, romance, comedy, and, of course, an enticing hint of sex. While quite entertaining in itself, the book provides an intriguing and revealing insight into the cruising industry. How many crewmen does it take to service a passenger list of 1800?How many different countries do you believe these crewmen hail from? What do they get paid? What kind of hours do they work? What are their motives for working a cruise ship? You will be surprised. By bringing the main character and storyline into the bowels of the ship with the people who must actually deliver the cruising experience, those questions are very plausibly answered.I enjoyed the book, not just because it was entertaining. It gave me cause to think. There is a subtle underlying philosophy about how life should be led. Don’t get into a rut, try different things, don’t be afraid of change, and don’t judge people prematurely, were just some of the themes that came to light. And there were more. That may not be an accurate way to describe what I found in the book, but it has more than just entertainment value. Try it. See what you find. I highly recommend it and give it 4 ½ stars.

Staughton As someone who once worked on a cruise ship for a number of years and understands the feeling of endless possibility that even a 7-day Caribbean cruise vacation poses for travelers, I was immediately drawn to this book, but more so to its unique premise. The idea of traveling, with no idea who provided it or why, touches on some of the deeper and more lasting questions that all of us often ask ourselves, even if we hate to admit it. Harkless' book, although a work of fiction, could easily be torn from the pages of any journal from any lost soul, desperate to find answers about what their life still might become, and closure on why existence can seem so cruel. Between the hilariously recognizable moments aboard a cruise ship to his philosophical musings of the strangers surrounding him, John Smith, "as average as his name implies", becomes something far more interesting - an empty vessel into which a reader can pour his own curiosities and existential thoughts, and hopefully, by the time the story comes to a close, John Smith will have delivered some semblance of an answer, or will at least lead you closer to asking the right questions. This was a sparkling and entertaining fiction that I lost myself in very quickly, and while it was unnecessarily wordy at some points, and while some of the tangential sections seemed to lose the plot, as it were, I would recommend this to anyone who has ever felt adrift in their own lives, even if you happened to be floating in the pristine Caribbean waters of paradise. Very nicely done.
