Aida Zilelian's breathtaking debut novel, The Legacy of Lost Things, follows three generations of a family of Armenian immigrants living in the United States, as they struggle with one another and against the Old World expectations of their community. When Araxi, the oldest daughter of the desperately unhappy Levon and Tamar, goes missing, the remaining family members are forced to confront their painful histories together, and the role each of them has played in driving Araxi away.
Through Araxi and her family, readers are given a unique look at the generational and cultural tensions that both keep families together and tear them apart. Using spare, poignant prose, Zilelian deftly explores the themes of romance, duty, infidelity and guilt. Because of the mature content, this book is intended for adult and young adult audiences.

Review ''. . . [a] breathtaking and heartbreaking first novel . . . a tragic and powerful tale of love and hate, tragedy and rebirth. Zilelian's prose is lyrical at times, but . . . she crafts a purposely flat realism that perfectly complements her subject matter.'' - Christopher Atamian, Huffington Post
''The Legacy of Lost Things is a beautifully written and artfully constructed novel that explores the intimate lives of several generations of an Armenian immigrant family in America. Aida Zilelian has the superior novelist's combination of equanimity and empathy. In deceptively simple prose, she takes you right to the heart of the matter.'' - Aram Saroyan, Award-Winning Author & Poet
''The Legacy of Lost Things is a page-turning puzzle, a gripping study of a family of lost souls, burdened by patterns beyond their control, borne of tradition and decisions made in the blindness of youth. With unblinking bravery, Aida Zilelian has composed a complex, exquisitely-crafted story about the reality of violence and the possibility of redemption.'' - Nancy Agabian, Award-Winning Author, Me as her Again: True Stories of an Armenian Daughter
''A lyrical description of a family's search for their daughter and for their humanity.'' -- - Kirkus Reviews

A undeniable depiction of how love and damage are often irreparably paired By pigtattoo THE LEGACY OF LOST THINGS follows an Armenian family living in NYC before and after the disappearance of the eldest daughter Araxi. Each chapter follows a different character, and through these multiple points of view, builds a scaffold with which we understand the motives, compromises and fears of each family member and loved one. Zilelian is incredibly skillful in, not only clearly and realistically depicting the makes each person tick, but also constructing interweaving narratives that flesh out every conflict and decision, in a way that is both satisfying and heartbreaking. And while we are provided with the content to understand the each dilemma, the novel still leaves some questions unanswered; we are given a fully fleshed out narrative arch, but the story ends in a way that leaves the reader wanting more. Araxi and her family are complex and sad; they make the same kinds of mistakes we all make. We can relate to their plights. At the same time, Zilelian writes about the Armenian culture in such a way that we grasp the different values that drive behaviors, and the intergenerational conflicts that take place between immigrants and their first generation children. If that was not enough to suck me in immediately, the writing is also compelling and effortless. This is a wonderful debut novel.

Donovan It's rare that a first novel appears so powerfully: usually authors are honing their styles with their first books; but The Legacy of Lost Things is a standout because it appears such refinements have already been done and what is left is a true gem that centers on not just the struggles but the dysfunctional interactions of an Armenian immigrant family living in the United States.Aida Zilelian is a New York writer with many publications to her name; but this is her first book; and if this is any indication of her powers, it's a formidable entry into the literary world. In it she follows three generations of an Armenian family and the changes they experience when a daughter goes missing, forcing the family to examine their heritage, their interactions, and their world.Lesser works would have turned the drama into an emotionally wrenching saga alone; but there are bigger truths going on in The Legacy of Lost Things; and so the metaphor of being lost applies on many different levels within the family structure and individual growth. The result is a powerful saga of a family's heritage and its lasting effects; so don't expect your usual 'vanished child' pop drama. The Legacy of Lost Things moves deftly beyond the personal to embrace the social and political worlds of Armenian expats and society, and this is its crowning strength which sets it well apart from others, cementing its characters in solid descriptions, dialogue, and insights that leave readers satisfied.

Emotionally Endearing By tommybitt Never had I read a novel that so distinctly and profoundly grabbed me and pulled me in like that of "THE LEGACY OF LOST THINGS". Everyone has their own story of generational family struggles, and with this novel, it's no different. What IS different is the way Zilelian artfully weaves all of the characters and circumstances seamlessly in a way that draws you in and doesn't allow you to easily stop reading. I found myself caring for, and cheering on, every character in a way that reflected my own difficult search for meaning and truth through the rigors of family relationship struggle in the face of crisis.Aida Zilelian's ability to bring me into the very rooms and circumstances that unfolded with her characters is nothing short of remarkable. All the while, providing me with wonderful insight into the particular nuances of old world Armenian culture and the transition of integration into a new, and different set of values and beliefs in America. Her technique of story telling created within me such an intimate bond with each and every one of her characters. These very bonds brought to the surface such a sharp intensity of feelings and emotions, that I found myself deeply pondering the joys, fears, hopes, dispair, needs, wants, anger, regrets, love, hate, passions, insecurities, and confidences of my own life experiences...past and present. After reading the last page, I wanted to immediately start all over, for the endearing ride was a GIFT and well worth my time. BRAVO! Aida Zilelian.I look forward to much MORE!! Future readers: You will not be disappointed.~~By Tom B.
