The Washington Lawyer: A Political Thriller, by Allan Topol

Review

Pity the poor political novelist. After all the real-world skullduggery of recent decades ― Nixon’s Watergate, Clinton’s intern ― how can fiction possibly compete with reality?

Washington lawyer Allan Topol can’t beat those odds, but in “The Washington Lawyer” he’s given us a lively insider’s portrait of political mischief featuring a senator who is a traitor and perhaps a murderer, a nominee for chief justice of the United States who is desperately trying to cover up his own misdeeds and a gang of Chinese spies eager to bribe or, if necessary, kill our politicians to obtain the Pentagon’s innermost secrets.

Political fiction wasn’t always this dark. Allen Drury, whose “Advise and Consent” (1959) remains one of the most admired novels of Washington politics, respected the Senate (which he had covered as a reporter) and thought our government was swell, at least if those pesky “better red than dead” liberals who populate his books could be beaten back. But after Vietnam and Watergate, many novelists grew cynical ― or realistic, some would say.

James Grady’s “Six Days of the Condor” (1974) featured rogue CIA agents who imported drugs and killed people who threatened them; Edward Stewart’s “They’ve Shot the President’s Daughter!” (1973) imagined a Nixon-like president who had his daughter attacked to shore up his political support; my own “The President’s Mistress” (1976) offered a presidential affair and coverup and moved certain journalistic elders to declare presidential infidelity unthinkable and the author of such a work clearly depraved; Michael Halberstam’s more genial “The Wanting of Levine” (1978) proposed an as-yet-untested way out of the political wilderness: the first Jewish president.

Topol, who has written 10 other thrillers, stands with the pessimists in this outing. His story begins with 55-year-old Sen. Wesley Jasper relaxing on a beach in Anguilla with his gorgeous 34-year-old staff member and mistress. They drink wine, she puffs on a joint, they rejoice over their energetic sex life, and finally she demands his promise to divorce his wife and marry her. He reluctantly vows to do so after his reelection the next year. She sensibly doesn’t believe him and warns that she secretly recorded a compromising conversation he had with a Chinese official and that unless he marries her, she’ll ruin him. Although furious, the senator repeats his promise to make an honest woman of her, whereupon she goes for a moonlight swim.

The scene shifts to an elegant Washington dinner party in a mansion on Foxhall Road. Host Andrew Martin is a Washington lawyer who is a front-runner to replace the retiring chief justice. His equally distinguished guests include the (female) secretary of state and the speaker of the House. The dinner recalls all those scenes in Drury’s novels where everyone in sight is a towering mover and shaker.

Trouble strikes. Martin takes a call, hoping it is the White House informing him of his nomination. Instead it’s his old friend Sen. Jasper, calling from Anguilla to explain in near-hysterics that his girlfriend has drowned; he says he tried to save her and has her body on the beach. We learn that Martin owns the beach house the senator has borrowed for his love nest. The senator begs for help, lest he be ruined by scandal, and rejects the lawyer’s advice to call the police and report an accidental drowning. Finally, impaired by several glasses of wine, Martin agrees to call an influential friend on the island who can fix things. As a result, Vanessa’s body is moved elsewhere, and the police buy into a coverup.

Enter the dead woman’s more virtuous twin, brainy archaeologist Allison Boyd, who smells a rat and hastens to Washington to seek the truth. Soon she, Sen. Jasper and some bloodthirsty Chinese spies are all searching for the recording that would prove the dead woman’s charge that the senator had accepted millions of dollars from the Chinese government in exchange for U.S. military secrets. (He claims to need the money for his reelection campaign, but why does he turn to the Chinese? Why not to the Koch brothers, generous fellows who ask nothing at all in return for their largesse?)

“The Washington Lawyer” has its faults...but it moves along nicely. Topol deftly portrays office politics at a major law firm, as partners compete with one another and associates vie for the partners’ favor as they dream of making partner themselves. The novel flirts but never fully engages with an important issue: the way people atop the political heap can be corrupted by their hunger for ever more money and power. Ideally, the novel would focus not on Allison but on Martin, the would-be chief justice, who unwisely tries to help a friend and soon sinks deeper and deeper into a moral quagmire. His struggle deserves more serious treatment, but Topol’s version is entertaining and at times has the ring of truth.

(Patrick Anderson Washington Post)

Topol (The Argentine Triangle) successfully portrays the panicked terrors of that Washington staple, the public figure trying to escape a scandal by lying his way out of trouble. Sen. Wesley Jasper has slipped off to the island of Anguilla for some “mind-blowing sex” with his beautiful mistress, Vanessa Boyd, who announces that he had better marry her or she’ll go to the Washington Post with a CD she’s recorded of him having a meeting with a Chinese secret agent. Wesley retaliates by drowning Vanessa. To cover up the crime, he enlists the help of his friend, Washington power lawyer Andrew Martin, who loaned Wesley his beach house for the tryst. Martin, who’s in line for a seat on the Supreme Court, knows that if this gets out he’ll be pulled from consideration, so he calls friends on the island for assistance. Meanwhile, Vanessa’s plucky twin sister, Allison, has decided that the cover story of accidental death is a lie and throws herself into an investigation to find her sister’s killer. The story follows familiar patterns, but Topol ties up all the loose ends, and all the principals, except poor Vanessa, get what’s coming to them. Agent: Pam Ahearn, Ahearn Agency. (Mar.)

Engaging Characters / Intense Intellectual Dialogue By Night Owl Reviews 4.5 Stars / Top PickAllan Topol is a talented author and has written a book that one who enjoys mysterious occurrence; undercutting transaction, and shady characters that appear to be otherwise. Readers will be in for one of the best roller coaster rides that will be remembered for years to come. Mr. Topol penned The Washington Lawyer with such style and precision that I could not put it down and ended up staying up very late on a snowy night. The Washington Lawyer caused me the hold my breath as I ventured through the territories around Washington, DC. What kept me glued to the book was the descriptions of the settings, engaging characters, and intense intellectual dialogue that are extremely intense with rich visualizations. The Washington Lawyer teases and annoys in the most delightful manner as the story winds around the many trails of intrigue, greed and deceptions. The Washington Lawyer tap dances with the awesome rhyme moves of Michael Jackson and Gene Kelly across the readers psyche and intellect.I was enthralled with the flow of Mr. Topol’s pen. This heart pounding read is capable of making your knees buckle and knock you off of your feet. The richly well balanced story shows the author has an eye to details and evidence that Mr. Topol did his homework researching the underpinnings of the political machineThe FBI and other law enforcement experts associated with the Metro area and country are definitely not communicating. Could the poor communication between the power brokers be a result of too many enormous egos? Mr. Topol truly had his hands full juggling all of the spine-tingling drama woven within the few hundred pages. He will disappoint you by dropping the ball. Many characters are alluring strong as well as deceptive, delusional individuals. (wink) The vulnerabilities of some of the characters are crystal clear and I emphasized with them on their roads of twisted fates. As I read I became emotionally attached to Vanessa, Allison, Paul and Andrew which may be considered differently for other readers. The Washington Lawyer possesses plenty of heated loving, sensual entrapments which are searing and blistering hot, and all are well planned providing simply delicious morsels and seasoning this suspenseful narrative.I loved the storyline and the manner in which Mr. Topol delivered the resolution to this mesmerizing narrative.Review by: BookshifterDisclosure: Free review copy from the publisher/author for an honest review.

Andrew Martin, a powerful lawyer in Washington, who is presently being considered for the Chief Justice of the United States, gets a call from his close friend, Senator Wesley Jasper, who has been staying in Martin's beach house on Anguilla. Martin is unaware that Jasper, who is married, was using the beach house for an ongoing affair with a stunning former supermodel, Vanessa Boyd. Jasper reports to Martin that Vanessa has drowned, and asks him to help cover up his involvement with her, so as not to ruin his career. Martin, who has to this point, been an upstanding, honorable lawyer and citizen, agrees to help his friend, not taking into account the consequences that may be forthcoming. Vanessa's twin sister, Allison is suspicious of her death, and begins to investigate.During the course of the novel, Allison, with some help from Paul Maltoni, who happens to be Martin's star associate, and has the utmost respect for Martin, discovers certain inconsistencies regarding Vanessa's death, and in their attempts to expose the truth, are put in danger, and may not survive.Jasper serves on the Armed Services Committee (as did Vanessa), and is privy to many secrets. Unlike Martin, however, Jasper is a typical politician who will do anything for power and money. He has been selling US secrets to the Chinese – a clear case of Treason. There are twists and turns throughout the novel. Topol does an excellent job of characterizing the main players; they seem real, and readers will get the idea that these kinds of scenarios are happening every day in the US political system. For the most part, Topol keeps graphic sex and violence out of his books, which make them suitable for almost all ages and reader types. However, in this book he inserted a ridiculous, perverted scene that is absolutely unnecessary and may leave readers disgusted. Xiang, a Chinese agent who has been receiving the secrets from Jasper, breaks into Vanessa's apartment and searches for a computer disc that has damning evidence of both his country's and Jasper's involvement in treasonous acts. Vanessa was very meticulous in her personal life, and her underwear sets (as well as everything in her drawers) were all together, folded perfectly. Xiang steals a pair of yellow panties, and when Allison goes through Vanessa's apartment, she knows that someone has been there searching the apartment because there is a yellow bra without matching panties. That's all readers need to know; what Xiang does with the panties when he gets home is TMI.Readers who are interested in politics and are suspicious of real-life politicians and the evil that drives them as they fight for money and power, will find this an interesting and exciting book. Readers are aware who the bad guys are from the start, but it takes the characters much longer to figure it out, creating palpable suspense. Except for the scene mentioned above, the book is well-written, and worth reading. Hopefully Topol will use better judgment in his subsequent books, as he is an excellent storyteller, his books are perfectly edited, and his writing style makes for enjoyable reading.Special thanks to Tracy Minsky at Media Muscle for supplying a copy of this book for a fair and honest review.

Newman This review is based on a free copy received from the author’s publicist by represents my own opinion. When I saw the title of this book I thought it would be another run of the mill tale of Washington politics and corruption but was totally wrong. The book reeled me in from the start and never let go. It is so well written that the reader can actually believe this to be a real story that could appear on an episode of 48 Hours.Vanessa Boyd is a former super model, now working for a Senator (Jasper), who she is also having an affair with. The two are on a secret vacation in a Caribbean Island and Vanessa is determined to get Jasper to marry her. He says he can’t because of his wife and family and the upcoming election. She then lets him know that she recorded to a CD a very embarrassing conversation that Jasper had with a Chinese Official that she will make public if he doesn’t marry her. Jasper grudgingly agrees to her demands and shortly after Vanessa drowns.Jasper calls his friend in the state, a powerful Washington attorney Andrew Martin and asks for a “favor.” He tells Martin what happened and asks if Martin can arrange for Vanessa’s body be moved and all traces of Jasper’s presence be removed from the scene so nobody would know that he was involved. Martin agrees and calls his connection at the island to “fix” things. He has immediate regrets to having agreed with Jasper and realizes he should have contacted the authorities. Now it is too late because Martin is up for a Supreme Court justice position and if this situation came to light he would lose that opportunity, so he sticks to what he told Jasper.Vanessa’s twin sister (Allison) is working on an Archeological dig in Israel when she gets the call that her sister drowned. Allison immediately flies back to the states to find out exactly what happened to Vanessa. She does not believe the story she is told one bit and is determined to know the truth. As Allison is relentless in her pursuit of what happened, Jasper works with his Chinese connection to keep her in the dark and also to locate the CD that Vanessa had made. The author does an excellent job of giving the reader insights into the motives of all the characters and makes them all interesting. We learn that Allison has tenacity having played injured on an Olympic team and scoring a goal that helped clinch a bronze medal. The Chinese agent that is trying to thwart Allison’s efforts is not really a bad guy but is forced to do what he does or his family will be killed.I highly recommend this one and look forward to more works by this author.
