This entertaining pair will linger in readers’ imaginations, making them want more.”—Booklist
While Acton and Doyle, two of Scotland Yard’s finest, pursue a self-appointed judge, jury, and executioner, Acton’s own questionable methods may prove their undoing…
The victims are all criminals who eluded justice—until they ran afoul of an avenger whose modus operandi is a bullet to the back of the head. The key to the vigilante’s identity lies in connecting the cold cases to an event that may have triggered retribution after all these years.
Meanwhile, Doyle finds herself shadowed by a mysterious figure. After the man steps forward to rescue her from harm, she wonders why he is invested in protecting her. But when she learns he’s in contact with Acton’s nemesis, she fears she’s being used in a plot against her husband.
The stakes are high, and both Doyle and Acton must work independently to outwit the players—before their lives are brought crashing down like a house of cards… “Cleeland is developing a memorable series that will captivate fans of police procedurals and complicated sleuths such as the protagonist in Carol O'Connell's "Mallory" series.” —Library Journal STARRED REVIEW of Murder in Retribution

Reel There are those book series with which I’m so besotted that a new book in the series has me fairly dancing to begin. Of course, the down side is that the book only has a countable number of pages. So it began when I received my advanced reader’s copy of Anne Cleeland’s latest New Scotland Yard Mystery starring Chief Inspector Michael Acton and Detective Sergeant Kathleen Doyle, Murder in Hindsight. Euphoria upon opening the cover and reading this fascinating story and dreading the end, where you long for just one more scene, one more glimpse at one of mystery’s most unique duo.Murder in Hindsight presents Detective Sergeant Kathleen Doyle with a real connect-the-dots case. Trying to ease Chief Inspector Acton’s worries over his trouble prone wife, she has taken up the job of reviewing cold cases. But, Doyle becomes involved despite her best intentions and her husband’s over protectiveness in an apparent serial murder case. Someone is meting out justice that didn’t get served in the courtroom by putting a bullet in the guilty party’s head, and the murder victims are all related to different cold cases. Acton is also on the scene to investigate, but he has his own set of problems to solve, which involve a reporter whose intentions go far beyond getting the latest scoop. Doyle slowly discovers Acton’s perilous position that has him dodging scandal and ruin. Unwittingly, Doyle becomes entwined in the conspiracy against Acton as she begins communications with a man who, after he rescues her from an attack, proves to be an associate of a criminal serving time because of Acton. Doyle must figure out who she can trust if she is to stop the vigilante killings and keep Acton’s secrets, of which he has many, from destroying him and their life together. Doyle’s strong sense of loyalty and intuition will serve her well in her tasks. There are few series that have engaged me to the point that Anne Cleeland’s New Scotland Yard Mysteries. Cleeland has the ability to bring characters to your heart and bind you to them. Kathleen Doyle is so full of wit and devotion to the people she loves that she continues to delight and charm in each book, making Acton’s obsession with her completely reasonable. Lord Michael Acton never disappoints in his commitment to Doyle and to a system of justice that serves up the guilty to their just desserts. Doyle and Acton have such a complete understanding of one another that the reader will develop strong protective instincts of his/her own. The supporting characters of the ever irritating DS Isabel Munoz and Doyle’s could-have-been boyfriend, now friend, DS Thomas Williams add so much to the narrative and the life of Doyle. The stories are so intricately plotted and layered that the action is always moving forward at just the right pace.

It's not about the story or the writing...it's the cumulative actions of the characters. SPOILER: Acton is a god-awful criminal! We know he has killed 3 people (and probably many more), and is, apparently, running an illegal gun smuggling operation. Now we know that 2 others cops have been working for the Russian. Acton started a turf war, killed 2 men, and threatened and framed the Russian. (He killed one man in book 2 and Kathleen is like, "Tsk. Tsk, Michael, you dropped your tie clasp at the scene.") He covered up Kathleen's justifiable homicide and, in this book, pays another man to kill the Russian in prison. While I won't argue that cops aren't perfect, Acton is really starting to upset me. Kathleen finds out the killer of the vigilante murders in this book but, once again, not enough evidence to arrest him, and she didn't officially make her suspicions known because she likes him and he's dying. Didn't she voice her opinion earlier in the book that all victims need justice, regardless of whether they were good or bad? Good heavens...do they arrest anyone in London anymore? Acton's meeting another woman for drinks and flirtation (part of his plan) and doesn't tell Kathleen, beforehand? Kathleen loves Acton and he loves her, but she's aware of his criminal activities and the best she can say is, "Leave retribution to God, Michael." He is guilty of multiple murders...I would cring every time he touched me! Then she's consorting with one master criminal and meeting another one in prison, and doesn't tell Acton? It's starting to bother me. I love a good (fictional) murder...but I also love a good arrest, and I like more ethical characters. I'll have to think twice about reading future books by this author.

Cate With Murder in Hindsight, the third in the Acton/Doyle New Scotland Yard series, Cleeland has done it again. Like the previous books in the series, the tale proceeds at several levels, some aspects of which are continuations of on-going stories and some new characters are introduced as the basis for new adventures for our detectives. My remarks are divided into three parts. First, there is the story of Doyle's progress as a detective. In the course of satisfying her husband's sexual appetites in a variety of interesting settings, Doyle is able to identify the Park Murders'killer and the killer's motive. The down side of this discovery has two problems: one, she has no admissible evidence to support her accusation, and, two, the killer has indicated that one victim remains. Will Doyle be able to identify, locate and protect this victim before the killer can act?Second, there is the matter of Solonik, an individual who, although in prison, is able to launch a simple but well-designed series of events the sole purpose of which is to discredit completely both Acton and Doyle. Being good at what he does, Acton is able to foil this latest attempt by turning one of Solonik's confederates against him by the simple expedient of offering a better working arrangement. For a small nominal fee, well small for Acton, Solonik has been targeted for death, and the contract may also provide opportunities for gun-running activities. The contract was agreed upon in Acton's apartment, the funds coming from a stash of cash kept in Acton's safe. Are these bills traceable in some way? Surely Acton wants to have some hold over his contract killer.Third, well....some matters have been resolved and some criminals have been, or will be, punished. However, Cleeland leaves the reader with several intriguing questions, questions associated with Acton's special case and the operation and ownership of the family estate. Concerning the special case: Acton has been given the task of investigating corruption and murder within the Government. Given Acton's activities to this point in the series one wonders if Acton is the target of the investigation. Concerning the family estate: How is the estate funded? What about the less than cordial relationship between Doyle and Acton's mother? Finally, given the lack of clarity surrounding the deaths of Acton's father and other male relatives, how is it possible for the estate's manager to be Acton's heir and will this change when Doyle gives birth.I await the fourth installment of the series with hopeful expectations.
