Schoonover THE SECRETS OF MIDWIVES is the story of three generations of midwives living in New England in the present day and the tale is told in their alternating voices. All three strong willed women have one major secret that will be revealed in the course of the book.Floss at eighty-three is the grandmother. Originally from England she came to the United States as a single widowed mother with her daughter Grace. She now lives happily with her same sex partner Lil (she came out late in life) and still teaches childbirth classes. She has a major secret in the form of the real circumstances of her daughter's birth that is slowly revealed in the plot of the novel.Around sixty when the story is told Grace is a former hippie and a midwife like her mother and daughter. Married to an accountant who is worried about his own job security she is very opinionated and disdainful of medical doctors and hospitals. When she delivers a baby with a cleft palate at home and complications ensue her license is suspended until the matter can be investigated. Rebellious Grace continues to secretively deliver babies away from the eyes of the medical community.Neva is in her late twenties and has known she has wanted to be a midwife for years. Single, she unexpectedly becomes pregnant and keeps her condition secret as long as possible and at first refuses to name the father. Even in her pregnant state she finds romance in the form of a handsome pediatrician who wants to take care of her and her baby and all questions about her baby's paternity are settled by the end of the story.THE SECRETS OF MIDWIVES is a straight forward story that I would classify as either romance or chick lit. Author Sally Hepworth is a decent storyteller and this is a very quick easy to follow story and the stories of pregnancy and birth will interest many. I rate it between a three and a four but because it is pretty predictable am rounding down to three stars.
10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Secrets kept for decades and suprises for a Mom. By kindred spirit I will start first with a warning that may be helpful for some people. If you believe in marriage is between a man and a woman is God's plan and having affairs with married people is wrong than you may be offended by this book. Also the "f" word is used a few times. I mention this as I know it matters to some and it is fair to be warned. Now on to the book it was great.I love mysteries where you cannot get it all figured out right away and even when you are sure you know you are still suprised by a twist or two at the end. Floss, Grace, Neva three generations of midwives all three have secrets. In one case the person is the last to know the truth she thought she knew. Floss is the grandma she is 83 no longer delivering babies, Grace prefers home births and Neva works at a birthing center attatched to a hospital.When Neva can no longer hide her pregnancy and Floss and Grace find out at 30 weeks into it that is when the secrets start to haunt Floss. I'm not going to spoil it for you but you get to see how it was to be a midwife in England when Floss was young, then she comes to America. You see how things go for Grace and Neva too. It is very interexting even in a historical sense. Who is Neva's baby's father? Sometimes the mother is the last to know.

Midwife Light By KDMask This was a very light read about a family of 3 midwives who struggle through life with the combined purpose of bringing others into the world. The matriarch of the family has a secret that she's kept for years. The youngest has a secret she's kept for months. Both spring forth combining the past and the present together. I was actually hoping this book was set in the past as I did love Call The Midwife. The modern day setting is fine though and it gives a glimpse into modern day midwifery. It is heavy on the fact that no woman needs a hospital however, and I wish there was more balance on that end of things. I read this book in 3 evenings and found it to be enjoyable but not very complex or compelling. A good book for summer or on a plane if you want something that won't tax you too much.
