A Gem By KJAG Written in the waning years by a member of Company A, 2nd IL Cavalry--realizing the service, suffering, sacrifice, and noteworthy contributions of this regiment to the success of the Union in the western theater might be forever lost to history since no history of the regiment had been written. Although written from the viewpoint of Company A and not the regiment itself, since the company, as were other companies, were often detached from the regiment for various duties such as scouting, raids, escort, garrison, picketing, skirmishes, etc. However, movements and main actions of the regiment and other companies are discussed, including the heroic actions and deaths of leaders at the company and regimental levels, as well as biographies and images. The book follows their journey from leaving home, their training, participation in major battles including Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, Holly Springs, Vicksburg campaign, and many other lesser known actions including a raid that captured scores of Confederate cavalry officers gathering to attend a regional strategy meeting. The author clearly establishes that he is not a professional writer. On the other hand, he was actually there, and he effectively describes the actions and his experiences and feelings in a manner that made me feel I was there experiencing it myself. Especially poignant were his experiences in witnessing the brutal treatment of two different black men in the South, searching for and finding a mortally wounded friend on the battlefield (who expresses his great relief in being found by his friend and asking to see his friends and superiors to say goodbye before he dies the next day), the heroic actions of regimental and company commanders at Holly Springs (charging the enemy with sabers after refusing surrender, releasing captured comrades, and breaking out after being surrounded by enemy cavalry 10 times their number), the heroic deaths of his regimental commander and two who were second in command (including the stripping and desecration of one by rebels because he was originally from Tennessee), and the brutal murder of a comrade after going to visit his mother in Austin, TX shortly after the end of the war because he fought for the Union.Unique insights of the Civil War at the ground level in the western theater from the perspective of an Illinois cavalryman. A gem and a great value for only $7.
