Hildegard, no longer a member of the Cistercian order of nuns, has returned to the priory after more than a year from her pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Still unsure whether she will rejoin the Order, the Prioress suggests that a visit to Handale Priory might help provide some clarity. Used as a house of correction for sinning nuns, it lies in the north of the county in the middle of a vast wood and is run by the ambiguous Abbess Basilda and her close group of hard-faced acolytes.
While walking about the grounds, Hildegard discovers the corpse of a young man in the morgue. His body bears deep gashes from neck to groin. His wounds appear to be the ravages of claws, but larger than any animal Hildegard knows of. Is it possible that the young man was killed by a dragon, as Hildegard's been told? Of course, Hildegard does not believe in dragons, and despite being warned against it, she goes for a walk in the woods. There she discovers a secret tower, locked and barred, with armed men on guard.
What is so valuable that it needs such protection? Has it anything to do with the mystery of the young man's death? And why have assassins been pursuing the King's courier across the savage moor land only to murder him at a lonely wayside tavern? Hildegard risks all dangers to seek out the truth.
The Dragon of Handale is the fourth novel in Cassandra Clark's acclaimed mystery series set in the 14th century.

“A dramatic mystery lavishly studded with period details: Clark's best to date.” ―Kirkus Reviews on The Dragon of Handale|
“In The Dragon of Handale, Cassandra Clark creates a mystifying setting filled with medieval crimes and entangled politics, along with a string of macabre transgressions, perfectly matching the detailed periodic aspects of the story's surroundings: There are cold, dark deeds happening deep within the secluded and shadowy woods of Handale in winter.” ―The San Francisco Book Review
“Clark's 14th-century-set Abbess of Meaux series continues its compelling, well-written path. She creates a vivid picture of the time with both historical and fictional characters...Hildegard springs from the page.” ―RT Book Reviews

Cassandra Clark doesn't disappoint By Francophile This is one of the best-plotted, most atmospheric, and most wonderfully written recent historical mystery series out there. Intricate and surprising, with fantastic period accuracy and the perfect tinge of romance. Highly, highly recommended.

I enjoy mysteries, but generally am not a fan of books set during the medieval period (Brother Cadfael series excepted) because usually the authors make their characters, especially if they are women, too modern for the time period.Hildegard is a wealthy widow who, after her husband's death, decided that she did not wish to remarry but rather to found a house of her own, where she could teach women to read, some skills, and provide a place for some peace in a violent, uncertain world. But Hildegard hasn't taken her vows yet, and after returning from a pilgrimage, she is still torn re what to do: should she rejoin the world or take her vows? Her abbess sends her to a remote place so she can think things through, but when she arrives she finds the house is isolated beyond anything she expected, shady goings-on between the abbess and a merchant, and a very punitive order (nuns are sent there to be punished for transgressions, with little thought to helping them so they don't make the same mistakes again and with even less compassion and understanding).Hildegard finds herself embroiled in another murder mystery, and again she relies upon her intelligence, her wits, her intuition, and her Saxon friend Ulf (who is unhappily married). Far from getting the peace and quiet she craved, she finds drama, murder, illegal activities (selling young girls to be brides if wealthy and prostitutes or slaves if not wealthy, smuggling), nuns who had affairs (and one who had a child). Hildegard and Ulf manage to solve the mystery of the murders and save the child bride (or prostitute). What I liked about the book is general attention to detail and a good setting of the scene--even though the political turmoil is not front and center, it plays a part and the author handles it nicely so it is woven into the story without overtaking it. The author writes fairly well, although there are the usual sentence fragments, grammar and syntax errors and occasionally mis-spellings (this could be corrected if published bothered to employ editors), but not enough to make me stop reading and return the book (or fire off a letter to the publisher). What I didn't like was how modern Hildegard was, and the modern sensibilities and outrage that ran through the book. Young girls, particularly those from wealthy, titled families, were often married off for political and economic reasons at quite young ages. Today we would consider them child brides and are appalled at the practice, but this is not something that would have even raised an eyebrow much less been a cause for concern in medieval times. It is unlikely that anyone would have intervened to stop the marriage of a child to an older man. Additionally, females were property, to be disposed of as their fathers or male guardians saw fit. If a marriage to an waffling ally would cement the alliance, then the female child was married off. A Hildegard with 21st century sensibilities acts as Hildegard in this book does, but I strongly suspect that a true 14th century Hildegard would not have intervened and would likely have thought the marriage of a child for political or economic reasons to be sound. I think she would not have gotten involved.

Versatile Series By Kathleen Ingram A series I follow, this is Abbess of Meaux Mystery #5( Now called Hildegard of Meaux) and Hildegard returned from pilgrimage to Compostela. She has been sent to a very remote priory, deep in the woods in the North of England after reporting into her own. Somewhere and somehow I missed one of her relationships, although she is not terribly Abbess-like at this point.Towers in the woods, dragons and complex plotting and character changes abound here, as all good Medieval mysteries will have. For Mystery #6 will Hildegard or "Mistress York" as she is now called end up with Ulf? What will happen to his estranged wife and my goodness, what happens to the Abbott?A must read for historical mystery and medieval fans and followers of this versatile series.
