From the Author I was born and raised in north Philly, which is a neighborhood in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. All but one of the other kids on my street thought I was a bit strange. Growing up there in "The City of Brotherly Love" on my parent's front porch, passersby would shout, "You read too much!" They probably did that because I spent my youth reading every book I could get my hands on, including my mother's copy of Les Misérables, which was written in French. I couldn't read French, but I didn't care. In my rebellious young mind, my thinking was that if I could read the works of Hans Christian Andersen, and Shakespeare, as well as the King James' version of the Bible, I could read anything. So, I plowed right through it, not understanding much at all, but reading it to the end. I have since read the story as an adult (in English) and watched the 1998 American movie adaptation, which I thought was wonderful. Jean ValJean's plight, as a hounded ex-convict, moves me even now when I think about today's unfairness regarding the American justice system. I want to believe that I'm snobbish about what books I read and what movies I watch but I'm really not. I'll read just about anything that sounds vaguely interesting, from Stephen Hawking's Theory of Everything, to Q & A a novel by Vikas Swarup, an Indian diplomat (made into a movie you may have heard of called Slumdog Millionaire). I have a passion for words. People have been using the written word for thousands of years as a means of communication: we use them to record our ideas, share them with our peers and pass them on to future generations. I have been reading all sorts of books since I was very young. I don't just mean novels by James Patterson or Stephen King, but also nonfiction that gives me insight into new possibilities. My writing is purposely informed by nonfiction, inspirational works such as Embraced by the Light by Betty Eadie, Fatherlessness on Black Women, by Jonetta Rose Barras and other inspirational works by Drs. Wayne Dyer, or Deepak Chopra, and the list goes on. My hope is to inspire people, women in particular, through my writing. It's this fascination for new information that makes me seek out new books. I think it's a good thing, because it serves me well as a writer. And I will watch just about any movie, too, including Pineapple Express (Very funny, if you allow yourself to laugh like a kid). Three of my all-time favs are both versions of Imitation of Life, Stella Dallas, and Of Human Bondage. But, who doesn't like these? So nice, they made them twice. What is most interesting about all of these stories is the powerful need of each of the main characters to evolve beyond the restraints put upon them, whether their struggle be of the comic, cosmic, or dramatic sphere. And, I guess it's my need to know what makes us take that giant step for mankind that has lead me to spend more years than I care to remember conducting a private study of the soul and what it takes to be truly human. Having come from humble beginnings myself, I believe I am a living testament to the power of positive thought in action. My stories are the outward expression of my findings. About the Author Marlene Taylor has distinguished herself on several fronts, as a professionally trained Surgical Technician and then doing a six-year stint in the United States Air Force, serving her country as an Air Traffic Controller and Flight Simulator Instructor from 1975 until 1981. Hence you will find many references to medicine and air traffic control throughout her books. Over the years, she has written numerous papers and magazine articles. After the Air Force, Ms. Taylor returned to college and attended the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania from 1981 and graduated cum laude in 1985 with a dual degree in Marketing and Management. She worked briefly as a Territory Sales Manager for NCR, then founded and grew her own company. In 1986, Ms. Taylor founded, incorporated and successfully grew Accura Business Forms, Inc., in Philadelphia, PA. Ms. Taylor has won several titles including 'Business Executive of the Year' from the former New-Penn-Del Minority Business Development Council. And, under her leadership, the company was formally recognized as one of the Philadelphia Business Journal's "Top One Hundred Fastest Growing Companies" for two consecutive years. The company has since been sold and Ms. Taylor moved on to write and self-publish two novels in 2001 and 2002, selling a combined total of 24,000 copies. Her novel, A Silver Tongue, was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for best fiction writing. She holds speaking engagements and has been a guest on numerous radio and television shows throughout the USA. When the Philadelphia Prison System decided to form a reading group for its male and female inmates in 2003, and have authors come in to speak with the prisoners, A Silver Tongue was chosen to become their first book reading event ever. Ms. Taylor makes it a point to visit prisons and shelters to speak up about the importance of literacy and how it can benefit the overall quality of a person's life.
