From Booklist Carabinieri Captain Natalia Monte (These Dark Things, 2011) has one foot solidly planted in law enforcement, but the other dangles in her old Naples neighborhood, which is awash in organized crime. Natalia thinks she’s seen the worst of Naples’ underworld until she responds to a report of two bodies discovered in a countess’ garden. The men are posed naked astride a horse sculpture with evidence nearby indicating a traditional vendetta killing. A little digging reveals that the victims were homosexual, and, considering the routine attacks on Naples’ gay community, Natalia can’t eliminate that factor as a possible motive. But depraved camorra boss Ernesto Scavullo lurks in the background, and Natalia senses his connection to the murders. At the same time, Natalia’s former partner and lover Pino returns, forcing her to finally confront her feelings. Weiss’ cast is outstanding: gifted, tortured Natalia shares the stage with dangerously exotic Naples and the camorra’s simultaneous roles as parasite and protector. Highly recommended for police-procedural and international-crime-fiction readers. --Christine Tran
Review Praise for A Few Drops of Blood "Monte is a fascinating character caught between her dedication to her job and her messy personal life. But the most important character—evoked in lovely and lethal prose—is Naples itself, where Death strips off his mask and works, often with impunity, in the open."—Richmond Times-Dispatch"Weiss's style is polished and straight-ahead . . . The strong woman at the book's center is matched by strong women from other, related fields in ways that have implications for future editions in the series."—International Noir Fiction "Memorable characters boost this atmospheric mystery redolent of the city’s art, architecture, and the détente that permits the Carabinieri and the Camorra to both operate in a state of tense and fragile peace." —Publishers Weekly, Starred Review"Fans of Weiss’s series debut These Dark Things who have been awaiting a sequel will find their patience well rewarded by this strong follow-up."—Library Journal "Weiss’ cast is outstanding: gifted, tortured Natalia shares the stage with dangerously exotic Naples and the Camorra’s simultaneous roles as parasite and protector. Highly recommended."—Booklist"An intriguing mystery, brilliant characterizations, and a vibrantly alive setting."—Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine "Fans of mysteries with exotic locales, high body counts, and gruesome murders will enjoy reading Jan Merete Weiss's A Few Drops of Blood."—Gumshoe Review"A beautifully written novel, including glimpses into the history of the area during and after the war and a solid murder mystery at its core, it is recommended."—Midwest Book Review"The setting is superb . . . This series is turning into something very special, and I look forward to the next installment."—Kittling Books"[A] fresh set of villains are boldly painted, and the pace is uptempo . . . Ms. Weiss has established a unique and enduring character with Natalia Monte."—The Crime Book Beat"Twisted and compelling."—Kingdom BooksPraise for Jan Merete Weiss "Where better to set a noir police procedural than in streets awash in uncollected trash, against a backdrop of smoke rising from Vesuvius? . . . Donna Leon owns Venice, and David Hewson rules Rome. With this formidable debut novel, Weiss lays claim to Naples." —Boston Globe Weiss invests her debut with a plot replete with shocks, her characters—even the minor ones—are drawn with care and come alive as complete beings on the page, and her vivid portrayal of Naples, in its glory and its gloom, is unforgettable . . . These Dark Things tells a dark story and marks the beginning of what promises to be a bright series." —Richmond Times-Dispatch "[F]ull of intriguing contradictions and cultural clashes between modern Naples and its past, and Merete Weiss confidently weaves them into this distinctive mystery." —Milwaukee Journal-SentinelFrom the Hardcover edition.

Cole When I read the first book in this series, These Dark Things, I had mixed emotions. I absolutely loved the setting, but felt that there were problems with the plot and the characters. I'm very happy to say that A Few Drops of Blood have put most of those problems to rest.As in the first book, the setting is superb. Since Natalia lives close to the police station, she often walks to work, to cafes, and to the shops. As she walks, her policeman's eyes are never at rest, but as she's observing, she's also mentally listing all the many reasons why she loves the city of her birth. Her musings are making me fall in love with the city as well. The main characters are more fleshed out in this book. There have been consequences to Natalia and Pino's relationship that began in the first book, and we get to see how they are dealing with them here. The most fascinating part of Natalia's background, however, is her relationship to several females who have positions of importance within the local Camorra (crime families). These women have been close friends since they were small children going to school together. Natalia knows that her job requires her to forsake her friends, but she refuses. This insistence gives her both an edge in solving some of the cases she's assigned and a disadvantage because someone's constantly trying to force her to take a side. I admire her for her refusal to abandon her friends, and I also enjoy watching her walk a tightrope as she investigates anything that touches the Camorra. The only thing that bothered me as I read was the fact that the plot seemed to wander from time to time. Although I was enjoying the scenic route as I turned the pages, I kept wondering when Natalia was going to settle down and actually investigate the murder of the two men. Never fear, Natalia does put all the facts and clues together-- and she reveals some very nasty thorns hidden amongst the petals that make up the beautiful city of Naples. This series is turning into something very special, and I look forward to the next installment.

Hanson Captain Natalia Monte is called to a brutal scene in her city of Naples: 2 dead men in a homo-erotic pose in the guardian of one of Naples' wealthier residents. Naples is a city where the Mafia still take care of citizens in return for their loyalty. This fact will make it a challenge for Monte to discover who killed these men and why. A further complication in this investigation is her close friendship with someone who is a member of one of the Mafia families, something looked upon unfavorably by her superiors. Monte will have to dive deep into Naples' underbelly to solve this murder and what she finds may ultimately cost her her job..A Few Drops of Blood by Jan Merete Weiss is a well-written second novel featuring Captain Natalia Monte from this relatively new author. While I wouldn't call it a “cozy” mystery, neither is the main character as hard-boiled as Harry Bosch. Despite this, it is still an enjoyable read. I see real potential in this series and it should appeal to readers, especially women, who enjoy a good police procedural without the very graphic descriptions of other authors in this genre. I plan to seek out the first book in this series and will definitely read Weiss' subsequent novels. This book has earned 4/5 stars. *This book was sent to me to review by the publisher without any additional compensation for this review.*

I read her first novel and couldn't wait for this one. There are a few repetitions, but they don't seriously detract from the narrative. I can't wait for the next one. This could be the next Brunetti/Leon series for we Italian fiction aficionados.
