I'm probably the only one who thinks this as it is getting fantastic reviews and the book clubs are trending with it. I bought it as I enjoy the post apocalyptic/pandemic genre. Unfortunately I found it dull to read, the first person hip hop vernacular was constantly grating, the characters weren't fleshed out enough and the setting simply empty. There was no descriptive prose so you didn't know what the characters or their worlds looked like, nor the things in it. Like reading the inside of an empty tin can - rounded but empty.

Jackson This was not an easy book to read; as other reviewers have pointed out, the first person narrator is at times irritating and there is not a whole lot of description of settings etc. However, those are the things that made it interesting to me; I had to make it come to life myself and it did.

Olda Despite the future dystopic world of The Only Ones, there is something deeply familiar about much in the book. To be sure, issues addressed in the The Only Ones are timely and poignant. However, it’s the voice of the narrator Inez (or simply I) that made such a strong connection with me.The world of The Only Ones seems perpetually stricken with one pandemic after another. Queens, New York, where Inez lives, is as decimated by sickness as the efforts to wipe it out. Inez is an anomaly, seemingly immune to every disease she encounters. In an effort to make a living she is drawn into shady genetic experimentation. Through a series of events she is unexpectedly left with an infant, a clone of herself, and must raise her.Author Carola Dibbell conveys the constant anxieties of parenthood, of being poor, of physical objectification and general physical angst through Inez with such clarity it is almost uncomfortably familiar at times. The book is a fascinating read for issues such as ethics in cloning and genetics. But its enriching in the way it addresses poverty, motherhood, and more.

About the Author Bahiyyih Nakhjavani grew up in Uganda, was educated in the United Kingdom and the United States, and now lives in France. Collins The reader will revel in the sea of eloquence in this lyrical historical novel of the reign of the Persian king Nasiri-d-Din Shah in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The central character is Tahirih Qurratu'l-'Ayn, the poetess of Qazvin. This important woman has become a sacred figure in the early history of the Bábí and Bahá'í religions, an icon of the women's movement, and a model for modern-day Iranians opposed to the clerical regime that now rules that country. In this novel, we learn about Tahirih vicariously through the thoughts and experiences of four women - the Mother, the Wife, the Sister, and the Daughter. Nakhjavani's methodology is to make her main characters into archetypes, without giving them their names. Thus Mahd-i-Ulya, the mother of the Nasiri'd-Din Shah, is simply called The Mother. The story itself moves effortlessly through time, punctuated at one end by the ill-fated attempt on the Shah's life in 1852 by a handful of misguided Bábís, and at the other end with his assassination in 1896 at the hands of a follower of one of the country's political factions. Standing at the center is the mythical figure of the poetess of Qazvin, whose prescient predictions of what was to befall the main characters plays out in the manner of a Greek tragedy: all is foreseen from the beginning, but the tragic figures move inexorably to the climax unaware of what the reader can see coming in the clear light of the words on the page. In a sense, the woman who read too much is symbolic of the struggle of women to be seen as human beings. Perhaps we are all women who read too much, because we know the fate of the characters at the same time that we read these words as though it were all new and we wait for the next turn of plot. One can taste, see, smell and feel the world Nakhjavani describes so artfully.One of the most striking passages early in the book is the description of Tahirih being taken as a prisoner to Tehran by armed escort:"After a while the soldiers swore that she could read the future as well as the most Holy book, for she saw writing scored across the desert landscape and seemed to sense the king's couriers coming towards them from distant horizons. She had a remarkable alacrity in anticipation."When they questioned her about it, she laughed and said it was just like reading. If you only look at the word that's under your noses, she answered, you'll never see the connection with what came before and what comes next. If you only see what's happening now, you'll never understand the link between yesterday and tomorrow. Let your eyes move with the wings of a bird across the page and you'll remember the future." 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A Forever Book By Carson I had no premonition that opening the cover would be so impactful. Even after several segments, I was tempted to put this book aside because the disjointed plot is not easy to follow and the Persian culture requires attention. At one point I was flipping pages hoping for a chronology that would help me. I found the Chronology of Corpses but decided not to read it for fear it would reveal the plot. Before I read this incredible novel again (and I will), I will make an abbreviated list of the deceased so I can determine which is the Old King and which the Young Shah. I was actually angry with the author, but I very rarely give up on a book; and also, I stayed with the pages of small type because her narrative voice is breathtaking, lyrical, original, and delightful. I appreciate the poetic style, the spirituality, and the depiction of a strong, intelligent woman. This novel is polished, and the conclusion is satisfying. As with any book that one really cherishes, I have purchased this one in hardback. Should you be enticed to read it, I wish I had read the Afterward before I started the book. This is a forever book, a top selection from a woman who herself reads more than others think is practical.

The Woman Who Read Too Much caused me to stretch my literary parameters so as not to expect the linear, the clear narrative,an intensely personal voice, i.e., the language of my familiar. I didn't read the author's Afterward until the end of the book.I found her language stunning, and I adored the author's sharp, tart remarks, zingers like arrows finding their mark. I grappled with the impersonal tone, which was not impersonal on one level, as it was a highly intimate story of a noble being and a lightning bolt view of the darkness of life at the time of the Shah. People lived with madness permeating their lives. The tone is archetypal, and as I neared the ending of this novel, I realized the titles of The Mayor's Wife, the Mother of the Shah, the Poetess of Qazin worked in an organic way.Life during that time period was one of titles, and certainly required no note of the ordinary person. In the West, Wordsworth's view of poetry/prose is for or about the ordinary man, issuing a tone change in literature. Literature became democratized in Wordsworth's view; but not with the Woman Who Read Too Much. Reading this unique novel stretched me, the wondering reader, why the impersonal and why stick to reading this book?I wept at the end. I know of Tahireh. I wept at her ending, and the novel as a whole settled a white silence upon my soul. This is literature's effect.I am a writer, and down to earth, with sometimes pen on fire, and a rush of emotions and multisyllabic words. I am not the scholar whose words fit so exactly in place, bringing an astonished gasp to his reader. I am passionate about literature, good literature, and I am grateful to have read this book. It has an enduring quality.

About the Author Gene Stratton-Porter (August 17, 1863 – December 6, 1924) was an American author, amateur naturalist, wildlife photographer, and one of the earliest women to form a movie studio and production company. She wrote some best-selling novels and well-received columns in national magazines, such as McCalls. Her works were translated into several languages, including Braille, and Stratton-Porter was estimated to have had 50 million readers around the world. She used her position and income as a well-known author to support conservation of Limberlost Swamp and other wetlands in the state of Indiana. Her novel A Girl of the Limberlost was adapted four times as a film, most recently in 1990 in a made-for-TV version.

Much in the style of "Little House on the Prairie" and Beverly Cleary novels-this is a really wonderful book for youngsters and us oldsters alike. If you have a love of the outdoors, and children who overcome adversity-this is a great read.Service was awesome, great price-so glad to have found a copy! Thanks!

It charmed me much as it did then, although of course, the writing was very old fashioned as one would expect in a book this old. The values and expectations of this era were so different from today, but through it all ran asingle thread of decency and love for others. Still a wonderful education in the lives of moths and butterflies, although these days some of Elanoras practices would be frowned on. Still a good read, with great memories of my 11th year.

Very well written and extremely interesting. It reminded me so much of Anne of Green Gables. I would highly recommend this one. Gave it a five stars but would have gone even higher.It is a book I will remember for a long time.

Aspen's advice parallels my own eating wisdom over the past years of struggling through menopause-related depression. I wish I'd had this focused guide with menus & ideas & practical solutions much earlier, and it will undoubtedly be a gift for others struggling to maintain a healthy brain and nervous system. Perhaps one day it will be normal to eat weird, as we learn that treating our bodies well is the only way to live a thriving, on-purpose life.

By Sarah I loved this book's quick run-down of the different nutrients needed for brain health, and where to get them; a lot of good information about fats, soaking grains and how the food you eat affects your mental health! I enjoyed Aspen's other book, and this one also provided a lot of great information and insight into natural health and how to obtain it.

Sacheri es un escritor que no aburre, que a mitad del libro te tiene pensando en el desenlace, pero aún así no perdes de vista lo que esta enfrenté tuyo. A pesar de ser una historia que circula en la vida de dos personajes, te mantiene entretenido, con ganas de saber más y con una sonrisa por la química que hay entre ellos. Muy recomendado, en especial a los padres.

Cole When I read the first book in this series, These Dark Things, I had mixed emotions. I absolutely loved the setting, but felt that there were problems with the plot and the characters. I'm very happy to say that A Few Drops of Blood have put most of those problems to rest.As in the first book, the setting is superb. Since Natalia lives close to the police station, she often walks to work, to cafes, and to the shops. As she walks, her policeman's eyes are never at rest, but as she's observing, she's also mentally listing all the many reasons why she loves the city of her birth. Her musings are making me fall in love with the city as well.The main characters are more fleshed out in this book. There have been consequences to Natalia and Pino's relationship that began in the first book, and we get to see how they are dealing with them here. The most fascinating part of Natalia's background, however, is her relationship to several females who have positions of importance within the local Camorra (crime families). These women have been close friends since they were small children going to school together. Natalia knows that her job requires her to forsake her friends, but she refuses. This insistence gives her both an edge in solving some of the cases she's assigned and a disadvantage because someone's constantly trying to force her to take a side. I admire her for her refusal to abandon her friends, and I also enjoy watching her walk a tightrope as she investigates anything that touches the Camorra.The only thing that bothered me as I read was the fact that the plot seemed to wander from time to time. Although I was enjoying the scenic route as I turned the pages, I kept wondering when Natalia was going to settle down and actually investigate the murder of the two men. Never fear, Natalia does put all the facts and clues together-- and she reveals some very nasty thorns hidden amongst the petals that make up the beautiful city of Naples. This series is turning into something very special, and I look forward to the next installment.

Hanson Captain Natalia Monte is called to a brutal scene in her city of Naples: 2 dead men in a homo-erotic pose in the guardian of one of Naples' wealthier residents. Naples is a city where the Mafia still take care of citizens in return for their loyalty. This fact will make it a challenge for Monte to discover who killed these men and why. A further complication in this investigation is her close friendship with someone who is a member of one of the Mafia families, something looked upon unfavorably by her superiors. Monte will have to dive deep into Naples' underbelly to solve this murder and what she finds may ultimately cost her her job..A Few Drops of Blood by Jan Merete Weiss is a well-written second novel featuring Captain Natalia Monte from this relatively new author. While I wouldn't call it a “cozy” mystery, neither is the main character as hard-boiled as Harry Bosch. Despite this, it is still an enjoyable read. I see real potential in this series and it should appeal to readers, especially women, who enjoy a good police procedural without the very graphic descriptions of other authors in this genre. I plan to seek out the first book in this series and will definitely read Weiss' subsequent novels. I read her first novel and couldn't wait for this one. There are a few repetitions, but they don't seriously detract from the narrative. I can't wait for the next one. This could be the next Brunetti/Leon series for we Italian fiction aficionados.

Releasing the Mermaid and Signing our Names By Gray Kochhar-Lindgren Ann Medlock’s Outing the Mermaid is most deeply about how a woman moves from being an unformed princess dependent on the arrival of a knight to being a woman who accepts the surging power of the sea, a woman who is at last able, in the final words of the novel, to sign her own name: Morgana Lee Palmer June 22, 1977. This core story moves along in a narrative that combines a coming-of-age autobiography—how does a woman move from the 1940s into the late 70s?—with a history of a tumultuous period of American history that progresses, in halting steps, from WWII through Vietnam and beyond.As Lee, who only early and late is Morgana, begins her courtship with her future husband Joe Montagna (who also turns out to have mafia connections), he notices her portrait of Our Lady of Guadalupe and she replies: “A confirmation gift. So she’s been on the wall since I was 12—if she’s on the wall, this must be home. And the picture next to her—the mermaid surrounded by polliwogs? That one too. She goes with me everywhere. It’s from my dad’s ship, in the Pacific war.” This is the fundamental scenario of Lee’s life, the script that she learns—through suffering and a thoughtful, gutsy imagination—to rewrite for herself. On the cusp of puberty two powerful images of womanhood accompany her, but these are themselves, especially the image of the mermaid, contextualized by the power of the absent father and the threat of death.Lee learns to feel like a “faux woman,” but, after losing the first love of her life, then becomes involved with Joe, a handsome man who is quite the smooth operator, a Doppelgänger who shows the world one face, that of an urbane and capable man, but whose other face soon turns to stone as he begins to attack Lee and her son, Toby. It is the classical scenario of an abused woman and the novel takes us through all the different stages of such a relationship until Lee is able to free herself from the violence and give herself to her own life.The sea, with all of its associations, is the element in which she must learn to swim and sing. Early in life, she had been thrown into the pool by her father to learn to swim and immediately learns that he “had expected something of her and she had failed, the first enactment she could remember of a script that would play out a thousand times more: a simple expectation, and her failure to meet it…Water had to be controlled, tamed, edited--.”The sea, like Joe, has a good face and a bad face—and this doubleness that splits is worthy of prolonged thought—and sometimes there is a “good sea dream, the one where she was in and of the sea, soaring above and through corals, doing a weightless, spiraling dance with great, graceful rays, with clouds of sequined fish.” But all too soon this dream, like the “good Joe,” would switch off and Lee would be left with the raging of violence, the stare of the Medusa-husband.After all the convolutions of trips to South Carolina and to the Hamptons, parties in Manhattan, a move to Princeton with its renovations of a house, and a dissolving marriage, Lee is finally able to tell someone—her friend Marina Seton—the fairy tale that has ruled, or expressed, her life: the Little Mermaid, a story that had “put her to sleep” from childhood through mid-life. And what she must learn is how to “pick up the knife” in order to protect herself and her child and to cut her way free from a narrative net that is destroying her. She does learn to wield the knife, learns that men are terrified of women’s independence—Machiavelli, religious fundamentalisms, and daily life are good indices of this terror—and learns to begin to become a Merwoman, part of the strong and indefatigable community of the “full-grown women of the sea.”There is much more to Outing the Mermaid than this sketch indicates and Medlock is a talented stylist able to evocatively capture both mood and surroundings. She writes lucidly in the registers of both realism and mythology, bringing these layers together in a novel of great interest to both men and women, for all of us are working to be able to learn to sign our own names in the name of the larger world. Armour Van Horn There's a fairy tale, birth and death, passion and desertion. A house to sell, an apartment to lease. A smart but naive woman learning to make her way in the world, despite her traditional family and a labor negotiator that may be the rottenest husband ever that didn't physically beat his wife. A cripple that chose to stay that way, and siblings that soared. Not to mention a logger that found the cure for epilepsy and then wandered off without finding anyone to tell about it. Ann Medlock weaves a tale full of complex and memorable characters.I bought the book to support a local author and was delighted to find out it was such a rewarding read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Realistic Look at Our Fairy Tale Lives By Grammar To Go How have I missed reading something as good as Outing the Mermaid before? Ann Medlock did a remarkable job of telling a woman's story--almost every woman's story to some extent. Even the independently minded women of today still have to see themselves through the eyes of men and other women who seem to "belong" to those men. How many women have lived like Lee in this story--always a second class entity and never having worth as a real person as long as she belonged to a man who could only see her as an extension of his needs. Ah, and the nightmares! Which dead sailors needed her help? ALL the men in her life needed her to DO what they wanted--until she raised the rare Tobias to love and care about others. This is not a motherhood book, however. It is not even a declaration of independence for a woman. It is a map and a knowing that a way is in our spirits for freedom and awareness of ourselves as individuals who matter. I just loved reading this story. And the ending was NOT what I expected!

"Jubilee," for example, concerns two neighbor girls home from Stanford for the summer. Parker, the oldest, is the daughter of a ranch owner, while scholarship student Andrea's father is a worker on the ranch. Andrea has a chip on her shoulder about Parker's wealth that spills over in ugly, unexpected ways. In the title story, teenage Frances rides her father's bus to the downtown fiesta but gets in over her head when she flirts with a "painter." Each of the stories is set in a rural New Mexico—a setting not often represented in fiction. Most feature characters with unrelenting hubris being forced to examine their often prejudiced attitudes toward others. The role of religion is examined in three different stories. In "The Five Wounds," Amadeo is hoping to play the role of Jesus in this year's Good Friday celebration when his foul-mouthed, pregnant teenage daughter arrives on his doorstep. In "Family Reunion," Claire goes on vacation with her Mormon neighbors, but Mormonism isn't what she thought it might be. Night of Great Reading By Emily I picked Night at the Fiestas up yesterday, and read through the first 200 pages in one sitting, got up, and finished it this morning. I typically prefer novels to short stories, but I skimmed the first story, the haunting "Nemencia," at the bookstores, and was impressed by the language and the strong imagery. The best short stories, "Mojave Rats," "The Five Wounds," "Jubilee," could have gone on for another hundred pages a piece, and I would have been happily engrossed. I had heard of this book only because Amazon recommended it after I had pre-ordered Mario Vargas LLosa's book (what a compliment!), and I'm so glad her name popped up on my radar. Look forward to following her career!

Fang I first fell in love with Kirstin Valdez Quade when I read a story not included in this collection, Kidline, which won the Mississippi Review’s 2014 fiction prize. In Kidline, a lonely, superior sixth grade girl meets a blind transfer student who quickly surpasses her in popularity and social confidence. What the lonely girl ends up doing to her blind classmate is almost cartoonish in its cruelty – the kind of outrageous behavior that gives a quietly told tale a welcome jolt of adrenaline – but it only makes us care all the more deeply for the twelve year old who is just learning who she is. Cute little story By Larandra This really is a cute little story about an Indian Chieftain who befriends a little white girl (or vice versa) and the family becomes friends with him and he comes to visits and one day brings his little daughter. Then everything goes wrong and the Iroquoise make war against the whites and kill a lot and the chieftan saves this one family, his little duagher having a big part in it. And in the end the Chieftain and his family is .... no, I am not giving it away, but it is a good surprising ending.Really worth the read.

From the relationship of the Native Americans and our people to the small white family and the one of Omas and how God can work in so many different ways for different peoples, is awesome but then on the other side the horrible way both sides treated each other. We were truly horrid to the Native Americans and its so hard for me to understand how we as a people could be so selfish and cruel. Be that as it is this story is one of love, hope, and the power of God and love overcoming anything.

About the Author Leon Logothetis is a TV host, producer, author, traveler and all around good guy. Formerly a London broker, he gave up his comfortable life to travel and find real human connection. By doug w draper First book I ever wanted to return for a refund! The buyer of this book should know that the author takes a camera crew with him to film from a distance how he gets people to pay for his gas, lodging etc, as he travels around the world on a yellow motorcycle. The camera crew is a dead give away that he did this book strictly for economic gain, he was not on some existential journey. One of my points is that if people were not being filmed they would have simply thought he was just another homeless guy looking for a free ride causing his trip to take forever. Which if possible would have made the book even more boring. People are much more giving when they think someone is watching them or somehow they feel like they got "credit" for the help. Skipping the camera crew problem, the writing is bland, the story is bland. I would rather watch paint dry than read this book!

I understand that he gave to some people who helped him but it seemed weird to me to judge who was worthy and who wasn't. Plus, I felt like the goal of bumming money and supplies off of people and looking for people who look like they would do be generous seemed sort of manipulative. I also wondered at the end if he and his girlfriend got married. On the other hand, I like thinking about kindness and doing things that are "different" but nowadays these "personal journey writings" seem ubiquitous. I didn't feel that I had learned anything or was challenged or enlightened or different at the end of the book so that was a bummer. I am curious what other people thought!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. It could change the life of the right person at the right time By Gloria Chan I read on average 2-3 books a week and I very seldom write reviews. I think "The Kindness Diaries" touches and inspires me as much as "Mountains Beyond Mountains" (the story of Dr Paul Farmer, my first role model). That's why I was very interested in why people did not like it. I can understand why some thought it was an "ego trip" and that he was a "free loader", but even if that was true, I see nothing wrong with him feeling good about himself ("ego trip") and choosing a "free loader" route to fulfill his dream. Being the founder of the Asheville Pay It Forward Network, "free loader" doesn't exist in the dictionary of people who freely give. People who ask for help are actually providing us with the opportunity to experience the joy of giving and to remind us that we are here to pay-it-forward. The beauty of pay-it-forward is that everyone can do it in their own ways. I believe his way has inspired (and will) a lot of people and it's a great way to get the message across. I applaud him for what he did, even though I will not venture out of my house, let alone around the world, without money. People should learn to appreciate the good in others and to accept our differences. If this book doesn't speak to you, then your are not the right person, or perhaps it's not the right time.
