0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An atypical but good Verne work By Michael Fridman Jules Verne is commonly associated with adventure, travel and technology. None of these things are present in this work but rather it is more of a social commentary. The novel takes place on a desolate island off the southern tip of South America where a man has become a recluse from society. His solitude is interrupted by a shipwreck on his island whereby an entire ship of people of different nationalities and backgrounds. He helps them and in the survival situation evolves into somewhat of a leader. However, trying to rebuild a type of society on the island leads to many of society's ills and violent tragedy. This can be seen as a more mature work of Verne, or a reminder that many classic "adventure" authors were not nearly as superficial as they seem if judged only by their commonly known works (in this case Around the World in 80 Days). The novel is just as good as any modern "dystopias" that show society through a magnifying glass - it's poignant, atmospheric and contains the classic Verne streak of spiraling plotlines bringing together many ideas.

Ebook PDF El Lobo Estepario (Spanish Edition), by Hermann Hesse

El Lobo Estepario (Spanish Edition), by Hermann Hesse

About the Author Nobel Prize-winner Hermann Hesse was a German-Swiss poet, novelist and painter who is best-known for his seminal novels Siddhartha, Steppenwolf, and The Glass Bead Game. A child of missionaries, Hesse s writings are heavily influenced by Eastern mysticism, spirituality and the search for self-knowledge, themes that resonated with the hippie culture of the 1960s and which contributed to a resurgence in interest for Hesse s work following his death in 1962.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. poignant & personal: Hesse By A Customer While I cannot comment on the Spanish editon, I can say that I've read the book in the original German and in English translation (I am studying Spanish and was pleased see this edition for sale in Guatemala when I was last there); This is a book I can strongly recommend for introverts, especially for sensitive, introspective readers in their early 20s who may be going through a personal intellectual crises of their own. When I first read this book it was as an exchange student (4th year college student) living in Germany, near the end of my 1 year stay, feeling especially isolated socially, overwhelmed by intellectual Weltschmerz, and depressed to the point of contemplating suicide. I'm glad I picked up this book and started reading it. Thankfully, Hesse's German prose reads lucidly and easily, and I recommend the original to students of the language if only for that. I so strongly identifed with the protagonist that I could not put the book down, and I literally credit the book with saving my life...It gave me comfort and hope, and gave me lots to think about. I remember reading the book later in English upon returning to my university's home campus after that year abroad for a German lit class. We did an interesting character comparision between Harry Haller of Steppenwolf and Josef K. from Kafka's The TRIAL. I can't remember the particulars now but the contrast of the two literary characters as an illumnation of the phenomena(s) of Modernism was especially intellectually gratifying. I can only hope the Spanish translation does it justice.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Excellent book By A Customer Yet another masterpiece by Hesse. His keen insight into human nature and his truth seeking passion takes Hesse and his readers deep into the dualities of man and his struggle with himself. A brilliant work of fiction where Hesse, the mystic, draws his inspirations and his ideas from a wide range of topics; from world history to mythology and beyond the world of pure senses. Hermann Hesse at his best in the quest of superlative man and at the same time deeply conscious of the inherent limitations of human nature.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. The best of the best By Christian Hahn In my opinion it is one of the best works of Herman Hesse. It portrays the nature of human nature through the life of a man called Harry Haller. It starts quite confusing, when this man who thinks that his personality is divided into a wolf part a human part, and then reads a treatise about himself. He then starts to realize his real nature...

"We may shut our eyes, but we cannot help knowing That skies are clear and grass is growing." When one has in charge a treasure which one values greatly, and which, if once made known one is pretty sure to lose, I suppose the impulse of most men would be towards a hiding- place. So, at any rate, felt one of the men in this history. Schools had done their secluding work for a time; tutors and governors had come and gone under an almost Carthusian vow of silence, except as to their lessons; and now with seventeen years of inexperience on his hands, Mr. Falkirk's sensations were those of the man out West, who wanted to move off whenever another man came within twenty miles of him.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not quite five stars, but worth reading By Maggie Jarpey Old-fashioned humor in the conversation at the beginning of this book made it difficult to get into the story, but I determined to plow through it because I've liked Susan Warner's other books so much. The conversation that was humorous during this time period often doesn't work for the modern reader, even someone like myself who enjoys nineteenth-century books. But the story was good, and I soon came to love the two main characters, the participants in the romance. The young man became a (born-again) Christian before the girl (a teenager) did, and, as before in Warner's books, I found it very interesting to read of a basically good person's struggle to give herself to the Lord. The name of "Wych" was disconcerting, but I've discovered that the word "witch" and adjectives thereof were used in that time period in a different way than we would use them now. They were used to mean somewhat mischievous, very charming ("bewitching" would be the right word). The descriptions of a rich person in the U.S. at that time were fascinating. And it was so different to be a Christian then in the sense of helping the poor, because there was no government help for the poor. If Christians didn't do it, it didn't get done. The poor really did starve to death or die of cold and sickness at an alarming rate. Some non-Christians helped the poor too, of course, but it was mostly Christians who did it.The sequel is The Gold of Chickaree, which I'm reading now. Hazel is a sympathetic heroine. She resents not having power to make her own decisions the way men did in that time period. Female readers will totally understand her feelings. Yet, in some ways women were better off then (unless poor) for various reasons. The lesson is that every time has its problems peculiar to it, some of which affect men or women more, some of which affect different races more, and some of which affect children more. As Christians we can have the Lord's help in dealing with them and have a joyful and productive life nevertheless.I don't believe in the prevailing doctrine about God's sovereignty meaning that every bad event is permitted or given by Him for a good reason, and all the nineteenth-century Christian books seem to accept that doctrine as well as most of the Christian literature of today. But I do believe that God will bring good from every bad event if we trust Him to do it, so I can enjoy Warner's books and MacDonald's books despite their strong doctrine of everything happening by God's will.

By Maureen With all of the books out there about children's health, and all of the confusing, misguided, politically or "ethically" correct misinformation, it is great to finally read a book based on sound principles. This is not a bunch of feel-goody poppy cock, but advice based on good science and human history. Did you know there has never, in all of history, been a society that raised their children without the benefit of animal foods and plenty of saturated fat? So how ethical is it to deprive children of the very nutrients they need for every facet of their health? Follow the principles in this book and your children will grow to be strong, healthy indivduals!

I love how he is very straight forward, he also puts all the evidence and specific studies in there. If only the epa and the rest of the government would look back at their previous findings and fix some things they should have a long time about. I believe every health professional should have to read this book (among others) Great great book

High til I Die: The Unraveling of a Drug Addict, by April P

From the Author Addiction is ugly. It spares no one. It took me places that even the devil wouldn't go. This book is the first of many that will take you there. I also write it with the non - addict in mind. Friends and families try to understand the addict, many times to no avail. Read my book to feel just how powerful this demon we call addiction truly is.

From the Inside Flap Join a drug addicted woman on her last day of addiction. Forty years old and hasn't amounted to shit. This book is gritty and grim but stay tuned until the end for the hope that a life of recovery can bring.

From the Back Cover Powerless is knowing you are a parent, wanting to be a parent, but choosing to get high anyway. .. Powerless is using a dirty needle knowing it's dirty. Powerless is stealing your kid's allowance money that you yourself gave them. Powerless is forcing a toddler to lay in the bed half the day because you're too dope sick to get up. Powerless is hiding stolen articles in your baby's diaper bag and walking out of a store.Powerless is sneaking into people's homes and stealing from them. Powerless is going to cop dope in a blizzard with kids in the backseat and then cheering when you make it there in one piece.Powerless is having sex with people and having to close your eyes in the hopes that you won't remember the event. Powerless is going to jail, high and pregnant. Powerless is staying in a relationship because he buys you drugs. Powerless is watching the government take your kids away one minute and the next minute you're hitting the pipe again. Powerless is hating to wake up dope sick or hung over but having no desire to stop using. Powerless is giving your car away for one more hit. Powerless is losing everything you love and blaming it on others.  In the end, being powerless over addiction leads to being alone with the one person you hate most of all -yourself.

Award-winning author Sarah Beth Durst has been praised for her captivating novels that merge the darkly imagined with very real themes of self-discovery and destiny.

In The Lost, we'll discover just what it means to lose one's way...

It was only meant to be a brief detour. But then Lauren finds herself trapped in a town called Lost on the edge of a desert, filled with things abandoned, broken and thrown away. And when she tries to escape, impassible dust storms and something unexplainable lead her back to Lost again and again. The residents she meets there tell her she's going to have to figure out just what she's missing - and what she's running from - before she can leave. So now Lauren's on a new search for a purpose and a destiny. And maybe, just maybe, she'll be found...

Against the backdrop of this desolate and mystical town, Sarah Beth Durst writes an arresting, fantastical novel of one woman's impossible journey... and her quest to find her fate.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. evocative and surprising By Miss Print Twenty-seven-year-old Lauren Chase has lost a lot of things over the years: one turquoise earring, several friends and their respective contact information, her favorite stuffed animal Mr. Rabbit. More recently Lauren has lost her way.It wasn't supposed to be a permanent thing. All Lauren did was go straight, avoiding the left turn that would have taken her down the road to work and a whole world of bad news.Instead of a short drive away from her troubles, Lauren drives into Lost. All lost things end up in the town of Lost. Luggage. Pennies. Socks. People.Theoretically, Lauren can leave. All she has to do is find what she lost. In reality, no one in town wants to help her except for a mysterious, gorgeous man called the Finder and a six-year-old with a knife and a princess dress. Together the three of them might be able to survive Lost. But Lauren still has a mother to get back to, a life to reclaim while she decided if being lost can really lead to finding something more important in The Lost (2014) by Sarah Beth Durst. The Lost is the first book in Durst's first trilogy written for an adult audience. The story will continue in The Missing and The Found.Durst once again delivers an amazingly evocative world in this fantasy story. Lost is a horrible, desert town filled with junk and danger. Readers will feel Lauren's growing claustrophobic panic as she tries repeatedly to get back to her real life. The story unfolds nicely, with only a few slow spots, as Lauren comes into her own in Lost and makes a tentative place for herself with a couple of fellow misfits. The bulk of the book focuses on Lauren but secondary characters like the girl with the knife and the Finder are welcome additions to this motley cast. Although readers do not need to be told quite so many times that the Finder is very attractive, his other charms do come through. The Lost happily also includes a thread with Lauren's mother. Although not always the happiest sub-plot, it was nice to see a parental relationship feature in this book when, so often, protagonists exist in a strange familial vacuum.Plot twists and surprises abound in the final hundred pages as The Lost builds to a surprising finish. Readers may be surprised by the non-ending at the conclusion of this book, but it will only make them all the more eager for the next installment in this clever trilogy.Possible Pairings: The Blue Girl by Charles De Lint, Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly, The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith, Imaginary Girls by Nova Ren Suma, The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. It drew me in in a way I wasn't expecting... By michelle The Lost is Sarah Beth Durst's first adult novel and, like in her YA novels, she once again takes us on a unique adventure in a strange yet brilliantly crafted world. Seriously, you guys, Ms. Durst can do no wrong. Every book I've read by her (granted I haven't read everything she had written but I've read quite a few including Ice, Drink Slay Love and Enchanted Ivy) was superbly written and The Lost was no exception. The premise of The Lost is simple enough: a woman, Lauren, received word that her mother's already deteriorating health had taken a turn for the worse. She needed to clear her mind so instead of turning on to the street she typically takes to go to work, she instead turned the opposite way and just kept driving. Soon, she found herself caught in a dust storm and wound up in a very strange town called Lost. Lauren quickly found out that Lost was unlike any other town. It was literally a place where all the lost things, including people, in the world go. The only way a person can leave the town was if they can figure out and find what they had lost. Lauren must dig deep inside herself to figure out what she had lost or she'll be stuck in Lost forever. That was the basic premise that I got before I started reading the novel. I didn't quite know how the story was going to go or who the other characters were. I don't like going into a story blind but the writing was so good that I kept going and I'm so glad I did.Lauren was your every-girl. We've kind of been where she was in life. She had a job she's not quite happy with but it pays the bills and lived an unassuming life until her mother got sick and moved in with her. Lauren felt heavy with responsibility, sadness, worry and she couldn't really talk to anyone because she's drifted off from her friends. When she got stranded in Lost, she reacted how I would react if I were in her shoes: a mix of disbelief, fear, confusion, sadness, panic, hopelessness and needing to get out of there before she missed her mother completely. She was an easy character to like. Two people took Lauren in after she unintentionally angered the townspeople. One is the beautiful and mysterious Peter who ran around with his long black trench coat, no shirt underneath. He had feather tattoos on his body, spoke in riddles and answered a question with a question. The other is Claire, a young girl who carried a stuffed toy in one hand and a knife in another. Both were very interesting characters. The story was bleak, with Lauren stuck in this strange, rundown town filled with lost things and its unfriendly inhabitants. Is there even hope for Lauren to get out and get back to her sick mother before it's too late? Or is she stuck in Lost forever? If she does find a way out, it will mean leaving the two people she had grown to care for, Peter and Claire. The Lost was a dark, unusual read and in the wrong hands it would have been a frustrating and confusing one, but Sarah Beth Durst makes it so easy to follow with her lyrical writing and deft storytelling. It drew me in in a way I wasn't expecting and I cannot wait to read book two, which is called The Missing. However, I don't think it's a book for everyone. The pacing is slower and it is a retrospective, contemplative kind of read rather than an action-packed, race-through-the-pages type.If you love Sarah Beth Durst's novels, you have to pick up The Lost. I guarantee you'll enjoy it. If you're new to Sarah's books, I suggest starting with her YA novels, particularly Ice (Leslie also suggest Vessel) to get a feel for her writing. If you're a YA reader, don't let the adult label deter you from picking up The Lost--it can be enjoyed by both a YA and adult audience.(Originally posted on Michelle & Leslie's Book Picks book blog.)

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Beautifully gripping "new adult" fantasy By Charlotte If you are looking for an engorssing, beautifully memorable read full of bittersweet emotion with a fantastical twist, The Lost is an excellent choice.Lauren was on her way to work one day, driving to a job she didn't like, driving away from the return of her mother's cancer. But instead of doing what she was supposed to, she just kept going, driving down a highway through the desert with no plans or intentions to speak of. And she found herself in Lost. Lost is a place where missing things, missing houses and toys and dogs and library books, and even lost oceans end up. Its residents are people who have lost their way, or been lost, themselves. If they find what they are missing, they can leave... And in the meantime, they survive, or not, by scrabbling through the detritus of the lost bits of other people's lives.Lauren doesn't know what she's lost. And she doesn't know what she's going to find. Here's what she finds:--lots of scavenged stuff (those who like people making home-ish places with scavenged stuff will share my pleasure in this aspect of the book)--two of the most meaningful relationships of her life (such as made my heart ache).--what she needs to doHere's what the book did to me:--erased reality--left me with images and emotions that I will enjoy revisiting--left me with a strong desire to read the sequel (The Missing, coming this November)--made me want to enthusiastically recommend itIt is a fact that I mostly read books for young readers, and I think part of the reason I enjoyed The Lost so much is that it is a book written for grown-up that keeps all that I love best about kids books--the deeply, lovingly created world, the characters who are worth caring about, and the sense of wonder and possible impossibility you find in the best children's fantasy. I consider it New Adult, because of the age of the protaganist, and the issues she faces, but it's easy to imagine YA readers also enjoying it just fine.

The unforgettable story of a military family that lost two sons—one to suicide and one in combat—and channeled their grief into fighting the armed forces’ suicide epidemic.Major General Mark Graham was a decorated two-star officer whose integrity and patriotism inspired his sons, Jeff and Kevin, to pursue military careers of their own. His wife Carol was a teacher who held the family together while Mark's career took them to bases around the world. When Kevin and Jeff die within nine months of each other—Kevin commits suicide and Jeff is killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq—Mark and Carol are astonished by the drastically different responses their sons’ deaths receive from the Army. While Jeff is lauded as a hero, Kevin’s death is met with silence, evidence of the terrible stigma that surrounds suicide and mental illness in the military. Convinced that their sons died fighting different battles, Mark and Carol commit themselves to transforming the institution that is the cornerstone of their lives. The Invisible Front is the story of how one family tries to set aside their grief and find purpose in almost unimaginable loss. The Grahams work to change how the Army treats those with PTSD and to erase the stigma that prevents suicidal troops from getting the help they need before making the darkest of choices. Their fight offers a window into the military’s institutional shortcomings and its resistance to change – failures that have allowed more than 3,000 troops to take their own lives since 2001. Yochi Dreazen, an award-winning journalist who has covered the military since 2003, has been granted remarkable access to the Graham family and tells their story in the full context of two of America’s longest wars. Dreazen places Mark and Carol’s personal journey, which begins when they fall in love in college and continues through the end of Mark's thirty-four year career in the Army, against the backdrop of the military’s ongoing suicide spike, which shows no signs of slowing. With great sympathy and profound insight, The Invisible Front details America's problematic treatment of the troops who return from war far different than when they'd left and uses the Graham family’s work as a new way of understanding the human cost of war and its lingering effects off the battlefield.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, October 2014: If I were to tell you that this fascinating book chronicles the life of a war hero, you’d likely expect to be reading about a Patton-like figure barking out orders or a “Mark Owen” telling of the capture of Osama Bin Laden. But while Mark Graham was a lifelong soldier who saw more than his share of fighting, it is his actions off the traditional battlefield that make him impressive. (I say “traditional” battlefield, because the way author Yochi Dreazen depicts the complicated, violent life of soldiers pre and post deployment, you get the feeling an American army base is almost as horrific a theater of war—just one that’s more local.) Churchgoing Mark and Carol Graham were a typical lifelong Army couple: they lived on bases and had two sons and one daughter, all of whom were friendly, popular, patriotic kids who roomed together while students at the University of Kentucky; Kevin and Mark were both in ROTC and both planned to deploy to Iraq or Afghanistan. Kevin never made it: he committed suicide a few weeks after his graduation from officer training school; Jeff was blown to bits soon after his arrival overseas. What surely would have destroyed most families strangely fortified theirs; instead of quitting the army, which Mark briefly considered, he vowed to devote the rest of his career to “fixing” it. Realizing that some troops suffered wounds you could not see, he launched programs to remove the stigma of suicide and to educate leaders about Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. Along the way he met with extraordinary resistance—from bosses and underlings (some of them women)—for being too “soft”; one particularly disturbing incident involved a fake “Hurt Feelings” questionnaire, devised by soldiers themselves, in which respondents were asked to declare themselves either a “pussy” or a “queer” or “a little bitch” for seeking help. Eventually, some of Graham’s ideas were implemented, but it was a case of too little too late; suicides and PTSD violent incidents continued to increase and eventually, he was forced out of the service. Still, the Grahams persevere, rejecting high paying consultancies in the private sector in favor of giving speeches and seminars around the country so that other families won’t suffer as they have. And if that doesn’t make them heroes, it’s hard to say what would. – Sara Nelson

The Grahams’ compassion and wisdom as they turned their sorrow into a mission of suicide prevention moved me to tears… [Dreazen] writes wonderfully.” –Washington Post“In his superb new book, The Invisible Front, Yochi Dreazen paints a deeply disturbing portrait of the overstretched United States Army, downsizing in Afghanistan while deploying against the latest threats of the Islamic State and Ebola.” –Washington Times“[An] enthralling and enraging report about the Army’s traditional stigma about mental illness.” —Military Times“A journalistic tale that shines a revealing—and a disturbing—light on the ongoing emotional legacy of America’s two most recent wars.”—Publishers Weekly“What a moving book about a remarkable family’s heartbreak and courage. Ricks, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and author of Fiasco and The Generals“Yochi Dreazen has always been a first-rate reporter, and now with The Invisible Front he has delivered a compelling narrative which will haunt and inspire you. This is a treasure.” —James Andrew Miller, author of Live From New York“Yochi Dreazen has poignantly crafted one American family’s story that is too sad to be true. Despite the horror of their twin losses, Major General Mark Graham, and his wife Carol have gallantly turned their grief into action. The White House, Congress, Department of Defense, VA, Statehouses, along with your average American family must read this book. The Invisible Front will play a seminal role as we chart moving forward on mental health services for our military, veterans and all Americans.”— John Madigan, Vice President of Public Policy, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention “A compelling story of devoted service to our country and the tragic revelation of military stigma regarding the modern-day suicide crisis. With twenty-two veterans dying by suicide every day, General Mark Graham refused to turn a blind eye and met this challenge head on. He and his wife Carol lost two sons within months of each other, one to suicide and one in combat. Military author Yochi Dreazen documents this family’s journey from tragedy to triumph, and the battle to get the military to address this crisis. A must-read for anyone ready to expose the issue of PTSD and mental illness in the military and throughout our nation told through the lives of 2013 Lifetime Achievement Winners, General Mark and Carol Graham.” — Linda Rosenberg, MSW; President and CEO, National Council for Behavioral Health“Major General Mark Graham took the oath of military service, to ‘support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic,’ but what he and the Graham family did not know was that they would trudge headlong into battle against another enemy, that of interpersonal anguishsuicide. Turning family tragedy into assistance to countless others, Mark and Carol Graham’s story of anguish, doubt, anger, and perseverance reverberates amongst those who have encountered or struggled with mental anguish. Despite encountering war zones, leading recovery efforts in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in the unrecognizable U.S. city of New Orleans, or leading battalions of our nation’s military forces, the Grahams’ toughest battle is still being waged–changing the national dialogue about suicide. This mission, though daunting, is being fought by a true ‘warrior’ and empathic family and it’s a call to arms for all of us.” — Dr. William Schmitz, Jr., President of the American Association of Suicidology“Powerful, moving and a life changer! The Invisible Front by Yochi Dreazen delivers the story of General Mark and Carol Graham who lost both of their sons while in the US Army. Dreazen documents the determination of the Grahams as they wage a personal war against suicide in the military. This is a tale of daily heroism as the Grahams fight to save the lives of the soldiers who have served us.” — Kevin Hines, best-selling author of Cracked…Not Broken, International Speaker & Suicide Prevention Advocate, 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner from the National Council for Behavioral Health“We are all touched by mental illness, tragedy, or grief during our lives, either personally or through our family members or friends. Yet, the tendency is to bear these sorrows as if we are alone. By courageously sharing their story, Major General (Ret) Mark, Carol, and Melanie Graham Quinn invite us to join together in removing pervasive barriers of stigma, guilt, and shame that lead to isolation at the very moments we most need each other’s support.” — Charles Hoge, M.D., Colonel (Ret), U.S. Army, author of Once a Warrior—Always a Warrior: Navigating the Transition from Combat to HomeFrom the Hardcover edition.

The charmed couple had three children, two boys and a girl. But tragedy struck after the two boys followed their father into the military: within nine months' time, their younger son Kevin killed himself while a college student and ROTC cadet, while older son Jeff was killed while deployed to Iraq.Because of the different nature of their two sons' deaths, it becomes clear to the Grahams how differently -- and shabbily -- the military, and even the public, treats the so-called "cowards" who take their own lives, as opposed to the "heroes" who die in combat. Major General Graham and his wife make it their life's mission to educate the public about the pervasive culture of the military that makes it hard to identify and treat depression and anxiety, traumatic brain injury and post traumatic stress disorder. Not only that, but they aim to change the deeply ingrained culture of the military itself, a rigid one that stigmatizes anyone who struggles with these demons.Author Yochi Dreazen follows the family's story from its beginnings until the present. The family's grief is so deep that even today, while speaking in public, the Grahams will break down in tears. Their daughter, Melanie, describes what it was like as a teen to experience the loss of her brothers -- and to be the one who discovers Kevin. Through the stories of other military members who kill themselves or attempt to, the author paints a damning picture of the military's response to this growing epidemic of hopelessness and despair. In Kevin's case, the military can't be entirely vilified. Mental health issues plagued both sides of the Graham family, predisposing Kevin to bouts of depression. Mental health treatment was available to Kevin and he had made an attempt to get help. After his suicide, the family's religious beliefs had more to do with his treatment than the military. Giving in to family pressure, the Grahams held his funeral at a funeral home rather than a church, because of their belief that suicide is a mortal sin. Nevertheless, his funeral is attended by hundreds of people, including the ROTC cadets. Only one person declines to attend: a ROTC instructor who feels the suicide was an act of weakness. But Kevin's case, if not a straightforward tale of military malfeasance, is only one of thousands of military suicides, and Mr. Dreazen amply demonstrates the military's callous attitude toward those who struggle, and its inadequate medical and psychological resources. With the activism of the Grahams and others like them, perhaps this state of affairs will change.

The lost army By wogan The army has not changed in many ways from the days of the brown boot army that my father served in to the days of the black boot army that I served in. These days of the camo boots still have many of the same problems, despite the army's feeble attempts to address them. Yochi Dreazen does a good job in summarizing and presenting examples of those who have suffered in recent years from the policy that you cannot show weakness and most of all you cannot give into your emotions and depression. If you do, it means you are not a fit, top notch soldier and are weak. There have always been forms of PTSD, but under different names. My father, nor I would have never thought of saying anything to a doctor or a chaplain or an officer about our fears or any other emotion and feeling. Again Yochi Dreazen explores that problem, especially in relation to the suicide rate. The statistics today are horrifying and are given in this book. At many times more men are killed by their own hand, than that of the enemy.`The Invisible Front' focuses on Major General Graham and his wife Carol. Their families did have a history of depression and the signs that were there before their son committed suicide are discussed and why they were overlooked. Kevin was taking Prozac and knew he would be kicked out of ROTC and not allowed in the army - he hung himself. Their other son, Jeff was killed by an IED. From that point on the Grahams committed their lives to help those who were suffering, including the families of those whose relatives had committed suicide. The military and the community's reaction is explained for many of those who died. General Graham embarks on a program to change the army's view and policies, some of which has been adopted. The harsh policies that have been and in many instances are still in force are very bluntly and accurately described with a mention of the breakdown of disciple and events during Vietnam. All of this will be a revelation to those who have not experienced or had contact with the military. News reports do not do this problem justice. This is a sad and maddening tale. It is a hard story to read. It is a fact and the author is able to present it in full - that a death in combat is felt to be more worthy than one where the soldier has killed himself. The ruined lives and sorrows are portrayed in these pages- from the Graham's personal loss to the many instances of soldiers adrift in depression and hopelessness. The beginning of a change of policy is depicted, but what is really accomplished in this writing is an illustration of the mindset of the military and its cost to those who serve. Readers who wish to explore this and learn of this growing problem will do well to read this book.

Nothing is hidden here about the full toll of our highly effective military death machine which consumes even its own.A two star officer loses two sons to war. One death comes from a landmine unnoticed by the advance team but heroically limited in a self-giving manner. The other death is considered self-inflicted but from the description might actually be better determined an open verdict. The two star officer turns his resolute powers in dedication to his sons and working against all odds for a betterment of the treatment of our vets, etc. This is the untold story of our wars since 9/11, the rapid upswing of suicide in the military to such a point that now more soldiers lose their lives at their own hands than at enemy hands. If you have but a few pages to browse, start at the break in page 179 and read slowly to the end of Chapter Thirteen seven pages later.Nevertheless, this entire well researched and clearly reported account of the hidden side of war must receive reading by every military personnel, by every American, and we must reach out to assist those who serve to survive their service in every way.
