Texas is experiencing its worst season of wildfires in a decade, forcing police chief Josie Gray to evacuate the citizens of Artemis and the surrounding ranchlands. Not everyone makes it out alive, however.
In the fire's wake, Josie discovers the body of someone who didn't leave in time, inside the partly burned home of a local country music singer. A syringe found near the body offers an answer for why the deceased missed the evacuation. The question remains, though, why the unlucky soul was in the house in the first place. As Josie investigates, digging further into the country music scene and its hard-living characters, she begins to wonder whether or not something more sinister took place.
Firebreak continues Tricia Fields's award-winning Josie Gray mystery series, which has drawn acclaim for its detailed portrayal of this remote corner of America and the tough, resilient people who call it home.

“There's a new voice in Western crime fiction--Tricia Fields is the real deal.” ―Craig Johnson, author of The Cold Dish
“It's easy to see why Tricia Fields has become one of the authors whom fans of the mystery genre are raving about.” ―William Kent Krueger
“A fresh, confident writer of Western crime fiction.” ―Dallas Morning News
“Crime fiction readers who yearn for wide-open spaces, characters with real heartbeats, and stories that ring true will welcome Fields.” ―M.J. Rose, author of The Reincarnationist
“The Territory runs on adrenaline.” ―Houston Chronicle on The Territory
“Buckle your seatbelts for an off-road trip full of adrenaline. Tough and determined to make her way in today's Wild West, Josie is the type of police chief you'd want in your hometown, a gutsy new heroine who would be friends with Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon and probably Lori Armstrong's Mercy Gunderson, too.” ―Library Journal (starred review) on The Territory
“Tricia Fields' gritty debut novel about a Texas border town battling a Mexican drug cartel feels like, well, fresh territory for a mystery. The Territory has a lot going for it.” ―USA Today on The Territory
“The Territory provides plenty of thrills for readers, as well as food for thought.” ―Associated Press on The Territory
“Fields builds suspense with a well-wrought cast of characters who deal with deadly violence that's particularly frightening for being all-too-believable. And no one does it better than Josie Gray....Readers will want to see much more of her.” ―Booklist (starred review) on The Territory
“As in Fields' Tony Hillerman Prize–winning debut: carefully integrated red herrings, a tinge of romance and dead-on descriptions of West Texas weather--oppressive heat, weeklong downpours and earth-obliterating mudslides.” ―Kirkus Reviews on Scratchgravel Road
“Noteworthy for the delineation of the west Texas desert country and the well-drawn cast of characters; Josie Gray is a protagonist worth following.” ―Booklist on Scratchgravel Road
“Fields sounds a warning on industrial dangers and their wide-ranging effects on ordinary people in this engrossing follow-up to her Hillerman Prize–winning debut. … A tense climax with a flood, mudslide, explosives, and a possible murderer add to the suspense.” ―Publishers Weekly on Scratchgravel Road
“Wrecked is a brutal tale with beauty at its heart. A powerful story driven by the violence of the Mexican drug war, which frequently spills across the border, it's also about integrity, loyalty, and love. Small town police chief Josie Gray is one hell of a protagonist, and the harsh landscape of west Texas, which she patrols, provides a stunning backdrop to a compelling, often surprising plot. It's easy to see why Tricia Fields has become one of the authors whom fans of the mystery genre are raving about.” ―William Kent Krueger on Scratchgravel Road
“Emotionally taut, building to a breathtaking climax and portraying, in the process, the danger inherent in a Texas border town.” ―Booklist (starred review) on Scratchgravel Road
“This is a barnburner of a story and held my attention all the way through.” ―Reviewing the Evidence on Scratchgravel Road
“Tricia Fields has proved once again that West Texas noir remains hot--as hot as the desert surrounding Artemis.” ―Gumshoe Review on Scratchgravel Road
“As crisp as brush ready to catch fire.” ―Publishers Weekly on Firebreak
“A brisk narrative, a vivid sense of place, and an appealing protagonist make this another fine entry in this winning series.” ―Booklist on Firebreak

By Carol Lennek The action is fast and furious as Chief Josie Gray's small west Texas town is threatened by wildfires. Great descriptions of the challenges facing volunteer fire fighters as they juggle jobs, families and firefighting. Close cooperation of the community's first responders and how the back stories of previous mysteries and events interconnect with today's events and foreshadow future problems. If you like strong female leads dealing with topical current events then the Josie Gray Mystery series by Tricia Fields are definitely up your alley. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as a winner via goodreads and intend to read the books in this series.

Hoyos A wildfire nearly destroys the small border town of Artemis, Texas. During the cleanup, Police Chief Josie Gray discovers a man's charred corpse in the burned out home of country singer Billy Nix and his wife/manager Brenda Nix. A firebreak should have prevented the house from burning. The fire appears to have been intentionally set after the man was murdered. Another mysterious death soon follows. Josie learns that the Nixes' marriage was a sham used to conceal a wide assortment of perverse passions, illegal drugs and material greed. Fires and passions rage out of control in Tricia Field's highly volatile mystery, "Firebreak" [following "Wrecked" (Wrecked: A Mystery (Josie Gray Mysteries)), "Scratchgravel Road" (Scratchgravel Road: A Mystery (Josie Gray Mysteries)) and "The Territory" (The Territory: A Novel)]. Her past mysteries involved gun slinging, shootouts, and kidnappings--the type of violence one would expect in a small town that sits on the Rio Grande, across from Labrada, which harbors a vicious drug cartel, the Medranos. Instead of drug cartels waging war against each other, we have competing musicians who dream of signing million-dollar contracts with Nashville agents. In the aftermath of a treacherous wildfire, a bizarre whodunit is revealed. It is the type of mystery Agatha Christie or Mickey Spillane would have written if they had lived in West Texas. "Firebreak" has a diverse assortment of interesting characters that burn with desire for money, power, fame and love. The music industry, like every other segment of the entertainment world, is extremely competitive and cutthroat. In "Firebreak," bands compete with each other at a honky-tonk bar, the Hell-Bent. This novel describes the beer-guzzling fans and the clinging, ne'er-do-well groupies that hang around singers in hopes their fame will rub off on them. Singers will do nearly anything to keep their reputations untarnished. Police Chief Josie Gray is no longer romantically involved with accountant Dillon Reese; still traumatized by the drug cartel that abducted and kept him hostage inside a dark, creature-infested pit, he has moved to St. Louis, Missouri. Because of the wildfires, Josie has been reunited with a high school buddy, Pete Beckett, who is now a professional smoke jumper. He is a rowdy, daredevil who takes her skydiving. Josie is also reunited with a professional hostage negotiator, Nick Santos, who is investigating another kidnapping by a drug cartel. With whom will Josie become romantically involved? Even her elderly neighbor, Dell, has found romance. If fans of the popular Josie Gray series are expecting violent shootouts, they are going to be disappointed with "Firebreak." Even though it does have a raging wildfire that causes a great deal of tension at the novel's beginning, it is primarily a medical and police procedural with an intriguing mystery that has a tremendous amount of human drama. Some characters experience one tragedy after another; one can't help but feel sorrow for them. Furthermore, the homosexual lifestyle plays a rather significant role in the plot. One male character is described as very promiscuous. Whether they are born of Mother Nature or man's sinful nature, destructive flames rage throughout "Firebreak." It provides a pleasant break or departure from Tricia Field's usual shoot-'em-up mysteries. I highly recommend it, especially to fans of mysteries that are set in the great Lone Star State of Texas.

"Firebreak" by Tricia Fields is an excellent read in the Police Chief Josie Gray Mystery Series By Kevin Tipple Weather in Texas often is one of two extremes--- flood or fire. It has been a couple years since the floods came to Southwest Texas. Now it has been 9 months since rain fell in the desert area and now wildfire is the threat to Artemis and the surrounding area. The threat comes from the north and south with Artemis trapped in the middle. Evacuations are ordered for parts of Arroyo County, but not everyone will agree to leave. This area of southwest Texas where folks are used to hard times, desert conditions, and relying on themselves and their ingenuity to survive, makes for a people to don’t turn away from a fight. In the aftermath of the fires that spare the home of Artemis Police Chief Josie Gray, a body is found in the remains of the badly damaged home of Billy and Brenda Nix. If his wife and manager, Brenda, is to be believed Billy is about to make it big with a Nashville music contract. Billy is old school country and sings while playing guitar. Both he and his wife evacuated, according to some of the locals, but neither one is answering their cell phone. They may be up in Austin lining up future events or somewhere else. In the chaos of the evacuation they were seen at least once, but nobody really knows where they are or why they would not be answering their cell phones. The location of the Nixes, the identity of the body, and figuring out what happened should be Police Chief Josie Gray’s priority and focus. A focus that isn’t easy to maintain, as thanks to the events in Wrecked, her longtime boyfriend has packed up and left. Getting kidnapped by a drug cartel can kind of put a damper on the whole romance thing. Four months later and normalcy is a foreign concept for both her and Dillion.Firebreak is the fourth in a series that began with the award winning The Territory. This latest mystery features once again the deep characters and desert beauty present in the earlier books as well as the complicated cases Police Chief Josie Gray and her team must solve. This is a series best read in order as there are references to earlier events in each novel. The books are very good and so is Firebreak. If this series is new to you, it will be another year before Tricia Fields has another so get to work as you have some very good books to read.Material supplied by the good folks of the Plano Public Library System.Kevin R.
