In the latest installment of the chronicles of Carding, Vermont, Edie Wolfe comes to appreciate the truth in one of her father's favorite sayings: "Old sins cast long shadows." As the green of a Vermont summer deepens and the cool waters of Half Moon Lake beckon, Edie and her friends uncover more questions than answers when they start digging into the town's past. Why did Carding's most famous son, the renowned painter Joseph Stillman Croft, leave town so suddenly in 1929? Why does his strange will mandate that his masterpiece, Thieves of Fire, always hang on the wall of the Carding Academy of Traditional Arts? As she starts to probe Croft's secret life, Edie comes face to face with her own past when the father of her children, the man she knew in Paris as Jean-Paul Vallone, turns out to be very much alive and very interested in the comings and goings of her little town in Vermont. Then there's the business of Gideon Brown's resurrection tour, the problem of unpaid taxes, and a forgotten woman who holds the key to Carding's future. Edie would like you to believe that she's as calm on the inside as she appears on the outside. But with so much change swirling through the streets of the town at the heart of the Corvus River Valley, Edie Wolfe's renowned wisdom and foresight are about to be challenged. If you're in the mood for the kind of story that keeps you reading late into the night because you just have to know what happens next, then you're in for a treat in Thieves of Fire, a tale about the bonds of love and the fundamental goodness of human beings.

I am an avid reader and do not say that about many books, but this one creates a world that I wanted to inhabit, with characters that I felt I knew, both the endearing and the annoying, and a story that kept the pages turning. The back story within the story was far more complex than I expected at the outset, and the way that it intertwined with the main plot was masterfully executed.I live in Vermont (only 25 years years so no delusions that I'm a Vehmontah) and am a bit skittish about books that are set in our just about perfect world. Thieves of Fire hit all the right notes and showed us for what we are: a rugged, quirky, individualist bunch of interesting (on a good day)/curmudgeonly (the rest of the time) people who like to be left alone except when someone needs a hand or has a good story to tell. Well done, Sonja Hakala, you've done us proud!

By jsbvt Being from Vermont I was intrigued with Ms. Hakala’s first novel, “The Road Unsalted” that the local librarian suggested. It is a novel that weaves characters and events into a very satisfying book, except for the last page. That last page left me wanting to know more about the character Chloe. When I found out that “Thieves of Fire”, the sequel was out, I jumped to read it so I could find out what happened to Chloe and a few more characters from Carding. “Thieves of Fire” continued to follow each character, with several intriguing additional characters on their journey throughout the book. Surprises, that made me chuckle with delight were constant. Twist and turns of the plot and characters kept me glued to the book. Ms. Hakala’s descriptions of the community are vivid and beautifully written. I could picture each valley, home, person. Being in Carding, Vermont is a treat. Many of the characters I felt I’ve met which added to the vividness of the book. So, did I find out what happened to Chloe? No. But I sure do hope there’s another book so I can catch up on the gossip and surprises of Carding! It will be another great read!

By Marianne Kotch This is the second novel in Hakala's Carding, Vermont, series, again set in a small town (pop. 3700) where the bakery/cafe is the hub. The annual summer quilt show/fair is only a few weeks away, but Edie Wolfe, chair of the fair and director of the school for traditional arts, falls ill suddenly. What will happen to the fair? Who will lead it? Edie is facing the larger quetion of her building's ownership and what to do about the large, mysterious painting that dominates its hallwy. Skipped tax payments, long ago romantic liaisons, a battered woman, and various other shenanigans all come up for Carding's residents. Hakala does a good, subtle job of reminding the reader of the previous book's characters and plot, so it's not necessary to read this one only after the first. You can jump right into the series. All's well that ends well in this story, but it leaves us caring and wanting more about these quirky characters. Many "cozies" can be way too cute, but Hakala treads that fine line skillfully.
