7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. An excellent novel about reforming the wicked and falling in love By Bomojaz Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward wrote one of the biggest best-sellers of the 19th Century, THE GATES AJAR, published in 1868, a novel about the afterlife, meant to be an emotional salve for those who had lost close friends or relatives in the Civil War. As her writing career progressed, she went from this highly romanticised setting (there were three sequels to THE GATES AJAR), to a much more realistic one. A SINGULR LIFE is as realistic as anything by Howells, and is probably her best book.Emanuel Bayard, an unorthodox pastor with Christ-like qualities, tries to reform his derelect community (based on Gloucester, MA) by attacking the gin mills that line Angel Alley. The proprietors don't appreciate this very much, of course, and one of them hurls a stone at Bayard and kills him.Just prior to this, however, Bayard marries the strong and humorous Helen Carruth, the daughter of a theology professor at Bayard's seminary, who doesn't exactly go along with her husbands liberal actions. (They marry very quickly, which is a little hard to understand.) Helen's humor and quiet dignity are the central elements of the novel, and she is a wonderful character.Ward writes honestly and without preachiness (unlike Stowe, with whom she is often compared). The book, which easily could have become merely a tract against social ills, becomes a memorable novel with the development of the love story between Bayard and Helen.
