McGuire does not sugar coat as she focuses on some of the less glorious aspects of the fishing life. The stories are sad yet a valid insight into the lives of many in the nautical world. McGuire is quite adept in her manipulation if the written word. A very worthwhile read.

These are stories that engulf you with the force of an Aleutian gale and leave you emotionally exhausted, drenched and reeling when you come up for air. Her characters evoke the best of Tom McGuane's flawed heroes and Cormac McCarthy's villains.
