His characters’ breathless excitement with their new lives pulls you into that time and place, and his deft plotting holds you there.” —New York Times Book Review "[A] deliciously stylish, retro first novel. . .As each woman becomes entangled with mysterious, even dangerous men, Callahan suavely combines literary finesse and pulp fiction to create a fast-moving, heartwrenching tale of romance and tragedy in a time of tyrannically sexist social conventions."—Booklist "Callahan’s debut novel truly captures glamorous New York City from young women’s perspective in the 1950s. For aficionados of anything from the Fifties and the movie The Best of Everything (1959)." —Library Journal “Callahan has a knack for nailing the perfect detail to take a reader back to a particular time and place; this story of three spirited young women is full of the glamour of New York City's Barbizon Hotel in 1955. The dialogue sings, and the pacing was perfect. It's a gem of a story.” —Laura Moriarty, New York Times bestselling author of The Chaperone “A wonderful champagne bubble of a book—glamorous, aspirational, and relatable! The fifties never seemed so fun! Wicked, naughty and clever.” —Melissa de la Cruz, New York Times bestselling author of Witches of East End “This tale of big dreams, drop-dead glamour and fragile hearts will have you turning pages late into the night. Laura, a patrician beauty from Smith, arrives to work at Mademoiselle for the summer. Her hopelessly romantic roommate, Dolly, comes from a working-class upstate town to attend secretarial school. Vivian, a brash British bombshell with a disregard for the hotel’s rules, rounds out the trio of friends. I’d recently read The Bookstore by Deborah Meyler and found myself thoroughly disappointed and irritated. Searching for Grace Kelly by Michael Callahan was everything I wanted The Bookstore to be but wasn’t. It was simply divine. Both books take place in New York City with a female lead and a musty, old bookshop as an ancillary character, but that’s where the similarities end. Laura Dixon, the heroine in Searching for Grace Kelly is intelligent AND likeable. Even though she’s a Connecticut debutante, there’s not an ounce of pretentiousness to be found in her; she’s stylish, poised, and caring. The love triangle between Laura, Box Barons (New York City’s most eligible bachelor), and Pete (a bartender in Greenwich Village) is realistic and believable as is Laura’s internal struggle. She may be naïve, but an idiot she is not.Laura does not grace the pages of this book alone; her discovery of New York City is rounded out by the joining of her roommate, Dolly, and a vivacious redhead, Vivian, another inhabitant of the Barbizon Hotel for Women. Searching for Grace Kelly also takes place in 1955, and Michael Callahan did such an excellent job recreating this time period that reading it feels like watching a movie from the fifties. At times, it is a bit reminiscent of the movie How to Marry a Millionaire with three young women searching for love in New York City, but unlike How to Marry a Millionaire, not everyone in Searching for Grace Kelly winds up with a happy ending.I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The storyline was engaging and believable, and I absolutely loved the glimpse into another, more glamorous era.

Much Better Than I Imagined It Would Be By Wilhelmina Zeitgeist "Searching for Grace Kelly" by Michael Callahan was a book I wasn't sure if I wanted to read or not. I went back and forth on it and finally decide that, sure, I'll give it a go. And I am so happy that I did. This is a really good read. Mid 1950's when 3 young ladies make their way to NYC to make their way in the world. The characters are fabulous and interact with engaging dialogue. The story has plenty of surprises that kept me turning pages like mad. The descriptions paint a realistic setting for the time and made me feel very nostalgic for the era. While I was pretty small during this era I have fond memories of the fashions, trends, etc. The author got it all right.A great read for the weekend that shouldn't be missed. Once I started reading I did not want to put this book down. It would be a shame to have to stop reading because you have to do things at your place of employment like work. Managers and supervisors just don't put their priority of the day on reading unless it's reports and financial statements. Go figure.

One evening, she told us a few stories about what that was like - going to the Stork Club, breaking the house rules. It sounded like a grand adventure. A little Helen Gurley Brown meets Holly Golightly.I suppose that this book captures part of that Barbizon experience, but I was disappointed that Callahan focuses on the dark side. The characters are well developed and the plot lines are believable. This is a good, well-written book; it's just not much fun.
