About the Author John Benditt had a distinguished career as a science journalist. He was an editor at Scientific American and at Science before serving as editor in chief of Technology Review. The Boatmaker is his debut novel.

He sails to Big Island and the By Anne Saunders I read a review copy of The Boatmaker this fall. My plan was to go a couple of chapters at a time over a week or so, but I wound up reading it straight through. I was captivated immediately by the boatmaker himself, a shy, naive character who builds a boat and sails far away from Small Island, where he lives, and all he knows. The boatmaker moves instinctively through the story at first, with a force greater than himself pulling him toward something different and exciting and better. He sails to Big Island and then onto the Mainland, where he is confronted with violence, prejudice and intolerance, and he grows up, and his actions become more purposeful. John Benditt's work as a poet is clear here. He writes with simple, cadenced language, immersing us in a world that is mysterious and distant, but also familiar. It is a "wholly original" book, as jacket reviews say, and it is a wholly relevant one from distinct new voice in fiction. Highly recommended. Great book-club book, too!

Woven together with gifted language, thoughtful exploration and emotional intimacy. A journey that sweeps over you in its telling, unwinding slowly and fully. For the wanderer in all of us that seeks understanding of a greater world and the self- knowledge needed to grow and find our place within it. Highly recommend you treat yourself and join The Boatmaker on his journey!

This wonderful and surprising novel feels By Howard R Thoresen This wonderful and surprising novel feels, on one hand, like a newly discovered work by the 15th Century author of the Play of Everyman; on the other hand as it is fresh, invigorating and new. As I read it I felt the intoxication of discovering a new literary voice.Like his craftsman hero, John Benditt carefully layers his story one simple sentence at a time. He begins in the world of fable, or dream. Place names are generic, there is an animal guide; there are no indications of modernity, no cell phones, no computers, no airplanes. But it isn’t long before this raw, elementary world is revealed to be as complex and expansive, as enticing and horrifying, as our own. The hero searches for love, falls under the spell of cultism, and uncovers a mysterious identity. I love how the reader (at least this reader) discovers the boatmaker’s identity at the same time he does: gathering one piece of wood, one bit of information at a time, we are not certain what is being fit together but we have a kind of confidence that it will be something fine. In the boatmaker’s self-realization and the promise of the future I could still feel the fragility of being human in this sometimes-terrible world.
