About the Author Shireen Jilla was a journalist before she turned her hand to fiction. Exiled, a dark psychodrama set in New York, was published in 2011. The Art of Unpacking Your Life is her second novel. She lives with her husband and three children beside the river in west London.

Shireen Jilla has explored interpersonal relationships with so much depth, they stay with you, long after the book is done. Each character unpacks gently, neatly, with impact, cluttering spaces - it is remarkable to watch them hold each other up, when they most need it.Connie and her best friends have not seen each other since their days at university. She has arranged for a breathtaking holiday twenty years later, to celebrate her 40th birthday. In coming together, they must all face each other and their personal truths, for only they know each other, in spite of who they've become, and wear their scars as best they can with the hope of acceptance.These characters are familiar relevant and warm - mirror into our own lives. The book asks the question, can friendship as close as the one Connie and her friends share, endure a twenty year hiatus, pick-up, forgive, love and grieve together?

The sense of place is so vivid that we feel transported along with the characters. We share in their disorientation and in the intensity of their experience... The characters are a group of college friends brought together on safari for a fortieth birthday celebration, along with their spouses. There is a "Big Chill" quality to their interactions and revelations. As secrets come out and various conflicts, new and old, come to their boiling points, we are swept up in the story. We come to care deeply. THE ART OF UNPACKING YOU LIFE is at once transporting and intimate. An unforgettable book.
