Frank has been in a serious car accident and he's missing memories--of the people around him, of the history they share, and of how he came to be in the crash. All he remembers is that he is a lawyer who specializes in fine print.*

Everyone keeps telling Frank that he was fine before the accident, "just a bit overwhelmed," but as he begins to reclaim his memories, they're at odds with what everyone is saying. His brother Oscar is intent on going into business with an inventively cruel corporation.** Alice, Frank's wife, has written a book called Executive X that makes Frank furious, though he isn’t sure why. And to make matters even stranger, stored in a closet is a severed finger floating in an old mustard jar that makes him feel very, very proud.

As more memories flood in, Frank's tightly regulated life begins to unspool as he is forced to face up to the real terms*** and the condition of his life.**** Robert Glancy’s debut novel is a shrewd and hilarious exploration of freedom and frustration, success and second chances, and whether it’s worth living by the rules.

* Yes, exactly like this.

** We can't tell you what it's called for legal reasons, but believe us, it's evil.

*** Which are rarely in his favor.

**** Which is a total mess.

Terms & Conditions, by Robert Glancy

From Booklist Franklyn Shaw wakes up in the hospital one day with no memory of the car accident that put him there, of the people surrounding his bed, or even of his own identity. In the following days, as he begins the process of getting reacquainted with his life, things seem pretty good on the surface. He has a job in the family law offices, and he starts to remember his wife, his brothers, and his colleagues, but there’s a nagging feeling that something wasn’t quite right, even before his accident. As time passes and his memories begin returning in full force, he must decide whether he will return to the life he had before or use this opportunity to make a drastic change for the future. Delivered with a profusion of witty quips and tongue-in-cheek footnotes, Glancy’s first novel is written with a wry humor that belies the poignant life lessons within. It is somewhat weighed down by the abundance of annotations, yet those detract only slightly from the contemporary and heartwarming message found at the story’s core. --Cortney Ophoff

Review

“Frank sorts through the 'terms and conditions' of his life in agonizing, comic detail, mingling fantasy and reality . . . . The format (emails and obsessive footnotes) is entertaining, and the author's insights into the predatory aspects of human behavior are spot on.” ―New York Times

“A clever office send-up . . . . a remarkably fun read.” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review

“An original office comedy that dots all the I's and crosses all the T's: Think a dash of Office Space, a pinch of Palahniuk and a glance at Regarding Henry.” ―Kirkus

“Carefully plotted, fresh and amusing . . . . Frank, himself, is wryly funny and likeable, so much so that when he eventually exacts his delightful and appropriate revenge you feel like cheering.” ―Midwest Book Review

“Delivered with a profusion of witty quips and tongue-in-cheek footnotes, Glancy's first novel is written with a wry humor that belies the poignant life lessons within.” ―Booklist

“Very funny . . . . the work wittily explores the little moments that add up to disappointment and regret . . . . VERDICT Highly recommended.” ―Library Journal, starred review

“Terms & Conditions, the first novel from promising author Robert Glancy, is a mystery tale unraveled through the frequent use of footnotes. While this may not seem like the pitch for an engrossing storyline, Glancy's witty tone and keen insight into human nature help make this book not just readable but highly enjoyable.” ―BookPage

“A hilarious take on what happens when an expert in drafting the fine print loses his memory . . . . The fun is literally in the footnotes. They are ironic, insightful, and laugh-out-loud funny.” ―Washington Independent Review of Books

“An extravagant treat of an office novel, for fans of Memento and The Mezzanine. I loved it.” ―Ed Park, author of Personal Days

“It's wonderful. Funny, poignant, simple and profound--it's the kind of book I absolutely love. And it has the best ending I've read in a very long time.” ―Gavin Extence, author of The Universe Versus Alex Woods

“This great debut feels fresh and playful, and exceptionally readable (footnotes have never been so addictive). Every book seems to have ‘funny and life-affirming' written on it but this one actually is.” ―Matt Haig, author of The Humans

Quirky black-humoured story By Shelleyrae Terms & Conditions is a quirky*, black humoured story of a man** who lost his mind***, then regained his soul.***** Makes extensive use of footnotes** Franklyn Shaw, contract lawyer aka Executive X. Husband of corporate bimbo, Alice. In part one (“Amnesia”), Frank awakens in the hospital following a terrible car accident. He doesn’t remember who he is or what his life was like or who was in his life before the accident. Roughly 30 pages are dedicated to this period in which Frank’s mind and body have betrayed him and, in turn, he feels like he is betraying everyone else. In part two (“Hypermnesia”), Frank's memory frantically returns. At approximately 160 pages, it’s the longest section by far. In the third part (“Reality”), Frank re-inhabits his life, decides how to move on, and then takes action. The final section is approximately 50 pages in length. The novel is uniquely structured to play off the title of the book (which is taken from Frank’s career as a lawyer who specializes in developing terms and conditions calculated to indemnify his clients). Each succinct chapter focuses on some particular topic and is introduced as “The Terms and Conditions of X”. The heading is generally followed by a pithy one-liner that comments on the topic. Traditional narrative follows from Frank’s point of view. In the spirit of legal contracts, it’s frequently footnoted. This structure is highly original and fits the material well. It makes the reading experience quite unique and allows the author to present the material in a very engaging style (brief, anecdotal passages). The only exception to this structure is email correspondence between Frank and his younger brother, Malcolm. These emails frequently highlight some philosophical nugget or obscure thought and are welcome diversions. The novel is primarily marketed as humor – true in both its presentation and in the antics and spirit of its protagonist who has a delightful, wry sense of humor – but the levity is grounded in a strong showing of heart. Frank’s observations are poignant and his life is overtly intended to inspire the reader. Happily, the novel succeeds on both counts. Not only will the reader find occasion to laugh, he’ll very likely be challenged to think and, quite possibly, to grow. The portrayal of the amnesiac’s plight was surprisingly insightful. I also enjoyed the fleeting glimpse of Frank’s descent into madness. It was surprising to see such complex and sensitive subjects treated so authentically in a humorous work. The denouement of the novel, as Frank faces his old life and comes to grips with his future, is entertaining and uplifting. The novel did bog down a bit in the second part. It lost its focus (emphasizing tangents like business and politics). And as much as I like the protagonist, Frank the Former’s (or version 1.0’s) weakness could certainly be frustrating. But, taken as whole, there’s a lot to love about this little book.“Terms and Conditions” may actually inspire readers to rethink their lives. That's better than waiting for a mental breakdown or amnesia!

Check "Yes" That You Have Read "Terms and Conditions " By Book Club Member This book is best read with your tongue planted firmly inside your cheek, which is surely how Robert Glancy wrote it. If you've ever secretly grinned at the absurdity of the sheer volume of legal jargon in the fine print of nearly all commercial and financial contracts we encounter every day, this book is for you. Or, if you've ever been tasked with writing rules and regulations for any organization and you find yourself inserting more and more disclaimers to cover every eventuality, you will identify with the plight of the protagonist, who prior to developing amnesia, was responsible for writing "terms and conditions" designed to enable his insurance company, run by his oppressive older brother, to pay as few claims as possible. After an accident stole his memory, he was forced to rely on his wife and his brother/boss to fill in the gaps, but he senses all is not as it seems. Prepare for a hilarious ride as his memory returns in flashbacks. Though the style of this book bothers some readers, I find that its reliance on footnotes and fine print enhances the humor.
