By Denise Crawford The latest in the series (#15) is an entertaining mystery that focuses on the collaboration between attorney Hardy and his long time friend turned investigator, ex cop Abe Glitsky, as they delve into the case of a missing woman and corruption at the local jail. The body of the woman, wife of jail guard Hal Chase, is found in a wooded clearing close to the family home and Hal is arrested. But the homicide isn't going to be closed that easily -- and the team is off and running, chasing down clues and trying to find evidence.Although I knew who the murderer was almost instantly (a side effect of reading hundreds of books in this genre), the evolving story was paced well with plenty of red herrings. The partnership of Dismas and Abe has developed over the long series and the characters are well drawn and complex. Their interaction is spiked with humor but their respect for each other is evident.I enjoy the series and fans will want to devour this latest book!Thank you to NetGalley and Atria books for the e-book ARC to review.

Mackela This is the fifteenth book in the Dismas Hardy series, but most of the story is told from the point of view of former homicide detective Abe Glitsky. He has been retired for about 6 months and Hardy hires him as an investigator. He was bored reading books and watching TV, so he was quite willing to go out and do something useful, even though he felt like a turncoat, working for the defense. Hardy gives him a lot of freedom. He just wants him to find out who killed his client's wife. Glitsky is a veteran detective, so he knows what to do. Before too long the DA needs a new investigator, when one of his people is killed, so he hires Glitsky, still with the imperative to find out the truth.This book is a fairly run of the mill Police Procedural. It works well as a stand alone story, and you don't feel like you jumped into the middle of a series. Abe Glitsky is a fairly fleshed out character, and you get a feel that he could have a future as an investigator for the DAs office. He is the only character that gets to be filled out. The rest of the players are more two-dimensional bit characters, you probably know them if you have followed this series.I enjoyed The Keeper, but wasn't glued to the page. The story plodded along without too much happening other than Glitsky's detective work and home life. There wasn't too much tension, it felt more like a Police Procedural from the UK than an American Police Procedural.I give this book 3 1/2 Stars out of 5. I liked Glitsky, but the plot could have used a few more twists and surprises.I received this Digital Review Copy for free from edelweiss.com.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Lescroart brings his 'A' game to THE KEEPER, deftly leading the reader through a complex plot. By Bookreporter THE KEEPER is not a legal thriller. I don’t believe, if memory serves, there is a single courtroom scene on any page. That is a neat trick, considering it is full to the brim of defense attorneys (the venerable Dismas Hardy) and district attorneys (Wes Farrell and an entire team of assistants), not to mention police, ex- (Abe Glitsky) and otherwise, and a defendant (Hal Chase) who is in jail and may or (more likely) may not be innocent. John Lescroart's latest offering is a pure mystery, evenly divided between police procedure and private investigation, and wonderful from beginning to end.Chase is a deputy sheriff assigned to duty at the San Francisco County Jail. When Chase’s wife, Katie, goes missing from their home on the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving, leaving her very young children unattended, suspicion almost immediately falls upon Chase, and not without reason. The couple has been having financial problems; the now-missing Katie had been in counseling; and both husband and wife had huge life insurance policies that named the surviving spouse as beneficiary. Chase, seeing which way the wind is blowing, lawyers up with Hardy. This is somewhat ironic, given that Katie had been seeing Hardy’s marriage counselor wife for some time. When it is revealed that Katie and Chase had been having extramarital affairs, it appears that Chase had at least two more motives to murder his wife.Given that his usual investigator is away on an extended trip, Hardy retains Glitsky to start turning over evidentiary rocks in the hope of uncovering another suspect. Glitsky, who recently has been somewhat involuntarily retired from his job as a homicide detective, does not lack for suspects, but there is a problem: none of them are anywhere near as good as Chase. In due course, Chase is indicted and finds himself incarcerated in the very jail where he used to work. There is a problem there, though, and it starts at the top with County Sheriff and works its way down. Prisoner deaths and overdoses are occurring all too frequently, and when an investigation into the death of an inmate is connected to Chase’s previous guard duties, Glitsky wonders if perhaps someone at the jail may have had a motive to kill Katie as well.Glitsky’s investigation results in a rare and uneasy alliance between Hardy and Farrell. Two more deaths --- one tragic, one otherwise --- seem to put the two teams on the right track, and it appears that justice, however rough and incomplete, is done. That is, until a single and simple fact is revealed that upsets every supposition and conclusion that has been made in the case. Doubting himself and his ability to do the job he loves so much, Glitsky must bring every bit of his skill and talent to bear in order to ensure that a killer is brought to trial after avoiding charges for much too long.Lescroart brings his “A” game to THE KEEPER, deftly leading the reader through a plot that begins simply but becomes more complex as things progress. Mystery aficionados may guess the identity of the doer (or doers) before story’s end, but, as is true with any visit to the streets of San Francisco, the journey is as interesting and enjoyable as the destination, if not more so. Ziffer As an acupuncture physician I've always looked for more concise (simple) ways to treat and I was introduced to Master Tung's Acupuncture. All the seminars, etc are too far so I have read both major books on it but there is too much info. I have watched webinars from two prominent practitioners and afterwords, I'm still confused. I have had the pleasure and honor to communicate with Brad personally and he has been so open to sharing his knowledge and information but still the imaging aspect has been a bit foggy. I recently watched Brad's recent webinar on elotus and then followed it with his book and for the first time, this totally makes sense. Brad has presented Tung's acupuncture in an easy, concise, organized fashion with examples, points, and fantastic diagrams. As he says, it's not about the points themselves but understanding the why they go where they do. I now feel so much better prepared to utilize the techniques. Thank you Brad for your sharing and so much caring for the profession and each one of us.

By Donna Chow This book is PERFECT if you use the Balance Method, Master Tung's, or any other distal acupuncture technique. It breaks down how to quickly and efficiently use mirroring and imaging which is especially helpful if you are treating pain and your patient wants the pain gone right then and there! This book is easy to read and the techniques are even easier to learn!

Some gems, but you have to hunt for them By edmai Brad has an excellent command of images, and he gives some very useful tips from his own experience. That being said, the book suffers from poor editing, and the organization could be improved. The tone is conversational, which is moderately acceptable, until the grammar mistakes get in the way of clarity. At one point in the book he says DO NOT needle bilaterally (in capital letters) and in another part he says it is fine to needle bilaterally. Then, at another point, he says needle shoulder points "I like TW 14 and SI 11 in particular. That is on the shoulder joint, or is it TW 15 and SI 12? I'm sorry, I forgot the TCM points. But I like these those two points..." Confusing, and I find it frustrating at times. The first half of the book feels like a webinar lecture, and the last half consists of transcribed questions and answers from his experience with elotus webinars. Some of the diagrams are lifted from Deadman's Manual of Acupuncture (which he cites), and some lifted from H. McCann's Practical Atlas (which he doesn't). I would suggest that before you buy this book, you at least have a working knowledge of Tan style acupuncture so that you are able to make sense of the jargon and the approach.

By A Customer Even though Sau-ling Cynthia Wong notes that "noother Asian-American writer since has been able tomatch Mori's community portraits for mellowness," hisportraits of Japanese-American life just before World WarII show the strain of a double identity at that time. (Eventhe title itself serves to illustrate the cultural binary.)Mori's prose is sparse, yet it is not cold. In all of the characters,from Sessue Matoi, the philosopher who "must be drunk andsober at the same time," to "the woman who makes swelldonuts," there is a warmth and humanity throughout every story,even while the hints of the coming war begin to appear

By bookworm2001@asianavenue.com This book was suppose to come out in print in 1941, but due to the attack on Pearl Harbor and anti-Japanese propaganda, it postponed its release until 1949. Toshio Mori is a master of storytelling. These collections of short stories should be with such classics as Hemingway and Saroyan. Yokohoma, California is both heart-felt and humorous. It is one of the best books on the Asian American experience.

A master By CK Matthews I first discovered Mori's writing in an anthology, but when I heard he published collections of short stories, I had to find them. This collection is marvelous. If creative writing doesn't work out for me, I want to pursue academic study on Mori and the universality in his writing. His story go beyond Asian American literature. A must-read author for anyone interested in Asian American literature.

By BHB The bad news is that I finished reading The Animals; the good news is that Christian Kiefer has written another novel that I'm starting as soon as I finish writing this.I came across The Animals when I read the Kirkus review: https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/christian-kiefer/the-animals-kiefer/ I became slightly obsessed with finding the book to read immediately and ended up buying an ARC on ebay. Even though I questioned my impatience at the time, the $17.99 I spent has provided me with more value than I would have thought possible. Bill Reed runs a small wildlife sanctuary in Idaho where he cares for injured animals and has remade a life for himself after making some desperate and violent mistakes in Reno. These mistakes return to derail Bill when his friend Rick is released from prison. While the reader hopes for the peaceful continuation of the shelter Bill has built, both for his wounded animals and wounded self, Kiefer tells the gripping, powerful story with exquisite language.I honestly don't think I've ever read a novel with such a perfect combination of thoughtfulness, action, well-told story, and beautiful prose. I like to think of myself as a reader with a slightly above-average vocabulary, but Kiefer has an extraordinary vocabulary and ability to use the perfect word at the perfect time. I found myself dog-earing pages and underlining words so I could look them up. This was not disruptive, but rather added to my enjoyment of The Animals because I could picture graupel, zerk, Sphex, twayblades, tenebrous shapes, and talus. Recondite may be my new favorite self-referential word.I picture writers practicing their craft in isolation, but Christian Kiefer's acknowledgements dispel that notion. His research, conducted with books and many, many people, is extensive and seamlessly enriched this novel. Kirkus Reviews says The Animals is "Devastatingly beautiful. This novel embodies why we write and why we read," and I can't improve upon that truth.

62 of 71 people found the following review helpful. Couldn't Stomach This Book By island reader Spoiler Alert! If you are a tenderhearted animal lover this may not be the book for you. My advice is don't read this book if you are looking for a feel good story about a man trying to redeem his past mistakes by running a wildlife refuge for a group of injured wild animals that he comes to love. This is not a feel good story! As a reader, I don't care for innocent animals being used as a plot driver for the shock and awe value. While this book is well written, it is not for everyone.

Very Good And Could Have Been Great By Bill Pieper, author of the novel WHAT YOU WISH FOR This is a very good novel, with complex characters, an absorbing plotline and a richly detailed sense of place, set in both Nevada and northern Idaho. Also, the device of having a makeshift animal rescue facility be the stage for a man coming to terms with and expiating the many failings of his past is truly touching. And Majer, the resident grizzly bear, becomes so well established in the reader’s mind, that it seems no stretch when we move into his non-human point of view for a particularly telling chapter.My only reservation stems from the fact that within this very good novel there is a very, very good, or even great novel that is never quite realized because it’s weighted down by needless gimmicks. I can’t count how many times I was forced to cycle back through the pages to get my footing because so many scenes—not merely sections or chapters, but individual scenes—begin in media res before eventually circling around to connect with a previously opened strand of action. Then there’s the occasional use of the second person narrative voice, which works beautifully in the blackjack and slot machine episodes, where Nat is so driven by his gambling addiction that he’s estranged from normal selfhood and renders his experience as a “you,” not as an “I.” But strangely, some episodes of his equally degraded gambling behavior remain in the third person, undercutting the effect of those second-person scenes.Yet much of the writing itself is glorious and could be said to sing, though it does lapse into overwriting at points, with extra adjectives or whole extra sentences tacked onto descriptions of the desert or the snowy forest or the internal state of the narrator when those things have been elegantly described already. However skilled the singer, not every passage needs a grace note or a sustained high C.Add to this the decision to eschew all quotation marks indentifying dialogue, and the gimmicks combine to require so much decoding that they often push the reader out of the story. Of course, I can’t fault the author for wanting to experiment with form. Jose Saramago, giving voice to entirely different material, has made himself an international name by doing just that. But I do fault the editors at W.W. Norton for not reigning Kiefer in and enforcing greater order in material that doesn’t benefit from experimentation. Sadly, they may have deprived him and themselves of sharing the glory of a Pulitzer or a National Book Award, because without gimmicks, this novel would be in that league.

It would totally derail my diet. Thanks to this book I have learnt how to avoid doing that, and I also learned I can still eat the foods I enjoy without feeling cheated. I thought I had to give up everything I enjoyed. This book is also packed with recipes that taste amazing are easy to make. I have successfully began losing weight I am down 2 lbs in a week .

They even give you some recipes to try and help you along your journey there are so many more out there you just have to look for them, I am eating foods I enjoy exercising and I am losing weight. By Happy Amazon Customer Wow. This book is powerfully useful and disturbing. The Hypothyroidism Diet made me realize that I must be certain to seek out natural sources of iodine in my diet. I didn't realize the connections between fatigue, normal thyroid function, adrenal gland stress/imbalance, and appropriate diet and exercise. The author shares that people with hypothyroidism need to limit healthy carbohydrates intake to 45-50% of their diet due to issues of the imbalance. I know that my mom has thyroid issues, and her metabolism is sluggish, she's more tired than she used to be and almost never exercises related to that, and takes some prescription from her physician for that (although it doesn't appear to be working). Plus, years ago I was tested and had issues but haven't had my Ts3 and Ts4 levels tested in a while. One thing I learned that was CRUCIAL, that I didn't know before reading this book, was about a class of naturally occurring substances, called goitrogens, which tend to interfere with thyroid hormone production. Foods that I love that include those are kale and broccoli, and spinach... which also have healthful substances in them (or the goitrogens can be inactivated by cooking such foods) so I need to be conscious of how much I consume of those foods and/or cook the foods to inactivate the substance. Another vital bit of info that I learned in this book was that one MUST exercise to combat the feeling tired all of the time, sluggish metabolism, lack of energy, and increasing weight, all of which is a catch-22 spiral. I am definitely going to be even more diligent about regular exercise. If you think you might have hypothyroidism issues, or know that you do, and want to learn more about it, get some great lifestyle and diet guidelines to help you deal with it, as well as get some really yummy recipes, than you must buy this succinct, informative book! Chapter 1

Mystery Planet

Zack Nelson sat at the kitchen table. He was in his house on the planet Nebulon. His dog, Luna, curled up on the floor beside him. A holographic, 3-D image of stars in space floated above the table. “This planet-collector that dad just brought home from Nebulonics is so grape!” said Zack. He ran his finger along the screen of a small handheld device. Luna tilted her head and yawned. Then she scratched her ear with her back paw. “It’s a game that lets me keep track of every planet I’ve ever been to. When it shows me a planet I’ve visited, I have to place it where it belongs in space.” The 3-D image of a small blue planet appeared among the stars. “That is Araxie,” said Zack. “It belongs over here.” Using his finger, Zack moved the floating planet to a far corner of the star field. Then he tapped on the device again. A planet covered with orange specks appeared. “That’s Cisnos,” Zack said. He moved the planet to where it belonged among the stars. “It has orange mountains.” “Arrrrr,” moaned Luna, stretching her front legs. “I know. Weird, right?” Zack added a few more planets he had visited since he and his family moved from Earth to Nebulon. The door to the kitchen elevator slid open. In walked Otto Nelson, Zack’s dad. He was home from his job at Nebulonics. “Hey, Captain, that looks great!” said Dad. He looked up at the planets orbiting above the kitchen table. Luna jumped up and ran over to greet him. “Those are all the planets I’ve been to,” Zack said proudly. “I think you’re missing one,” said Dad, “and it’s an important one. Nebulonics is actually sending me on a business trip to that same special planet. I think you’d really enjoy coming along. My boss, Fred Stevens, is going. He’s bringing his son, Seth. We thought maybe you could keep Seth company and show him around.” When Zack had first arrived on Nebulon, he and Seth got off to a rough start. Although Seth could still be a bit tough to get along with sometimes, the two had since become friends. “So, it’s a planet I’ve been to?” Zack asked. “Yup,” said Dad. “Juno? Plexus? Gluco?” guessed Zack. He looked up at all the holographic planets floating above the table. “Nope,” said Dad. A big smile spread across his face. “It’s a planet called . . . Earth!”

He is learning to read and still needs help but enjoys them so much that he is willing to read every night.

And her new book, Undone, gives more than good writing. It's a great perspective on life.Real life.The book hooked me early on. I read. And read. And read. Refreshing, real, raw. She had me laughing and crying often on the same page. The message of the book is wonderful. The fairytale we want out of life isn’t real. It never was. If you’ve ever struggled with shattered hopes, a fearful diagnosis, a wayward child, a dysfunctional church, or the silence of God, Undone will walk beside you as a companion.It asks as many questions as it answers, showing us that we need God’s presence and promises more than we need to know His reasons. Undone shares Michele’s journey down the road of an unexpected life. Michele’s cancer revealed “a cancer far worse”—the one in her heart. We all have this disease, don’t we?My favorite quotes: "Peace isn’t a byproduct of control, the payout of a happy conclusion. Peace is the infiltrating, life-giving presence of a very real God. One who loves nothing more than to step into the middle of locked and darkened rooms and impossible circumstances, close enough to touch." By Emily Sirkel The problem with a really, really good book, is you don't want to put it down until you've read every last page. This is a problem when you have a job and a toddler and a full laundry hamper and a sink full of dirty dishes.I absolutely loved this book. Michele's story is raw and authentic, gripping and real, heartwrenching and hope-filled. I read this book with a pen and highlighter in hand (which I never do), and its pages are marked up and dog-eared like I've had it for years.I am a young mom in a happy marriage with one small child—I do not know firsthand the pain of divorce, the struggles of remarriage and blended families, the blow of a cancer diagnosis, or the incredible challenge of taking in three young special-needs children. And yet Michele's story resonated with me and pierced my heart over and over as I devoured each page. "Peace isn't a byproduct of control, the payout of a happy conclusion. Peace is the infiltrating, life-giving presence of a very real God."Read this book.
