Her running blog is my favorite and her Instagram which is full of running and exciting life changes inspires me. I feel connected to her in some way because, like her, i have also experienced a loss of a parent and it did a number on my love for running. I found my love for running when i started working through my grief. Anyways, I find Danica to be a very humble and positive person and so when i saw that she wrote a book on running; i had to buy it. The book is full of information for new runners. Most information i knew of already, however, i also picked up some good tips along the way as well. She goes into details and explains things well so that a new person doesn't feel overwhelmed. There are also tips from other experienced runners in there as well, which are fun to read. This book breaks down running and all that comes with it: gear, nutrition, injuries...etc. If you are someone who wants to start and LOVE running...buy this book!

By Jennifer Bordelon Running for Women: Ditch the Excuses and Start Loving Your RunI always have to research the author and the publisher when I am interested in a book. This is a 114 page book backs by Danica Newon and is widely known for her blog, Chic Runner as a running coach and a mom. The publisher is Rockridge Press which they are behind many, many books I have on my bookcase so I was pretty confident I wanted this book.At first, the book seemed to very motivational and once you dig in, you uncover parts that are educational. In my quest to lose weight this year, I took up running and wanted to start something like Couch to 5K to help aid in weight loss. In this process, I have found myself researching how to do everything correctly including proper squats. The book helps develop proper form for running as well as good exercises to build better form when you run. It literally covers everything from foam rolling, to lunges, planks and other stretches.I found myself in a position where I really enjoyed the book and not to mention was easy to follow along as use as reference. I received a sample for my honest and unbiased review. All thoughts and opinions are of my own.

By lizreviewz Pictured above are just a few of my fitness essentials; an excellent sports bra, Kind Popped healthy grain bars, and the most important, Running For Women. I recently started to get back on track with my fitness routine and I have continued to search for new techniques to improve my overall training experience. I was kindly sent a copy of this book for review purposes, and I was ecstatic to see what new tips and tricks I could learn from this book.I immediately became interested in this book when I saw this quote on the cover, "Ditch the excuses and start loving your run." I always tend to find myself making excuses for not wanting to run, and sometimes skip the cardio because of the excuses I make. Author Danica Newon, is a running coach and founder of "Chicrunner.com." The beginning of the book gives us a little back story on how Danica started her adventure with running, and how it better developed her life. Each chapter gives you detailed tips and tricks on how to better your fitness training, and improve your overall running experience. Danica includes tips from what type of shoes and sports bras you should wear, to different sound tracks you should listen to. Another one of my favorite parts about this book is that she also includes pre-run and post-run workout recipes. I have really enjoyed trying these out, as I usually end up eating something way too heavy before my runs, and often leads to me feeling sick. The recipes have been phenomenal, and my all time favorite would have to be the Post-Run Super Berry Protein Smoothie, see pg.72.Overall I was highly impressed with the quality of this book. Not only are the pictures, and recipes fabulous, but the overall context is wonderful. I feel that now after reading this book I will be able to have a much more improved running experience.I was sent a copy of this book for my unbiased review. All opinions expressed are my own.

    SAMPLE

The Maroons! it was a word of peril once; and terror spread along the skirts of the blue mountains of Jamaica when some fresh foray of those unconquered guerrillas swept down from the outlying plantations, startled the Assembly from its order, Gen. Williamson from his billiards, and Lord Balcarres from his diplomatic ease,—endangering, according to the official statement, "public credit," "civil rights," and "the prosperity, if not the very existence, of the country," until they were "persuaded to make peace" at last. They were the Circassians of the New World, but they were black, instead of white; and as the Circassians refused to be transferred from the Sultan to the Czar, so the Maroons refused to be transferred from Spanish dominion to English, and thus their revolt began. The difference is, that while the white mountaineers numbered four hundred thousand, and only defied Nicholas, the black mountaineers numbered less than two thousand, and defied Cromwell; and while the Circassians, after years of revolt, were at last subdued, the Maroons, on the other hand, who rebelled in 1655, were never conquered, but only made a compromise of allegiance, and exist as a separate race to-day.

Black Rebellion: Five Slave Revolts (Black Rebellion - Five Slave Revolts - Episodes in American History), by Thomas Wentworth Higginson

Review "[One of] the ten most suggested books to build your African-American library." -- Philadelphia Daily News 02/27/04

From the Back Cover Fired with an abolitionist's passion, these five true accounts of slave uprisings in Latin America and the United States are among the best writings we have of the struggle to end slavery in the Western hemisphere.

Written by a dedicated antislavery crusader and first published in the Atlantic Monthly in the 1850s and 1860s, these highly readable essays combine in-depth research with assured, absorbing prose to tell fascinating and important stories: of black warrior societies of the "Maroons," descendents of escaped slaves who lived in the jungles of the West Indies and South America; of Gabriel, whose dedication to throwing off the shackles of oppression turned him into a figure with an almost mystical aura; and Nat Turner's furious insurrection; and more.

About the Author American author and civil-rights activist THOMAS WENTWORTH HIGGINSON (1823-1911) also wrote Army Life in a Black Regiment (1870) and Common Sense About Women (1881).

Slave-insurrections By Mei This text by American Thomas Wentworth Higginson contains five chapters of his 'Travellers and Outlaws' and is commonly referred to as 'Black Rebellion Five Slave Revolts'. This book was first published in 1889 and is in the public domain. The Kindle edition has 69 pages/1546 locations and can be read in one evening. The author was a unitarian minister, soldier, abolitionist and author who lived from 1823-1911. Higginson spent much of his live fighting for the rights of freed slaves, women and labourers. This collection contains 5 true accounts of insurrections by black slaves in the Americas. There is a biography at the end of this volume. This book is wellwritten, well researched and reliable. It tells about a sad and embarrasing chapter in history we must not forget. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in black history, US-history, history of slavery or in history in general. The contents of this volume is:THE MAROONS OF JAMAICA (slave revolt on the caribbean island of Jamaica)THE MAROONS OF SURINAM (slave revolt in this South-American state)GABRIEL'S DEFEAT (slave revolt in Virginia, US, 1800)DENMARK VESEY (slave revolt in South-Carolina, US, 1822)NAT TURNER'S INSURRECTION (slave revolt in Virginia, US, 1831)APPENDIX OF AUTHORITIESAs a sample I copy a few lines from the chapter on Denmark Vesey (page 36/location 738) below:[...]Denmark Vesey had come very near figuring as a revolutionist in Hayti, instead of South Carolina. Capt. Vesey, an old resident of Charleston, commanded a ship that traded between St. Thomas and Cape Français, duringour Revolutionary War, in the slave-transportation line. In the year 1781he took on board a cargo of three hundred and ninety slaves, and sailedfor the Cape. On the passage, he and his officers were much attracted bythe beauty and intelligence of a boy of fourteen, whom they unanimouslyadopted into the cabin as a pet. They gave him new clothes, and a newname, Télémaque, which was afterwards gradually corrupted into Telmak andDenmark. They amused themselves with him until their arrival at CapeFrançais, and then, "having no use for the boy," sold their pet as if hehad been a macaw or a monkey.[...]

Based on/from a Europeans point of view it is relatively well written and moderate in opinion. Not what I would have expected from an New or Old world person giving an account of the activity of the time. Found it refreshing considering how worried I was about reading a subject so close to my own heart.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Nice. By Amazon Customer Very authoritative, easy to follow, and the author does a great job at presenting the subject in great detail for the novice learner.

One of the most captivating stories I've read in years By David Wind I wasn't sure of what I was getting into when I started Senseless Acts Of Beauty; however, when I finished the novel I knew exactly what it was – one of the best written most captivating stories I've read in years. The title and genre of this novel may fool you; don’t let it, for it far exceeds both.Do not expect me to tell you about the story, other than it is a slice of life you absolutely want to know about, but not necessarily live.Lisa Verge Higgins has created a stunning success of a story that instantly draws you in and forces you to invest emotionally in its three main characters. Then, like the proverbial 18-wheeler running a-muck down the highway, it drags you along whether you want to be there or not. Trust me, you want to share the pages with Tess and Riley and SadieThank you Ms. Verge Higgins for this literary treat.I received an ARC copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

By Kris Anderson - The Avid Reader I just finished reading Senseless Acts of Beauty by Lisa Verge Higgins. Riley Cross has inherited Camp Kwenbook from her grandparents, Mary and Bud. She left her job and husband to return to Pine Lake and the camp. However, the camp is not doing well and Riley is going to have to make some hard decisions. One day Riley discovers Sadie Tischler hiding in one of the sheds on the property. Sadie is a young runaway (14) who is trying to find her birth mother. Sadie’s adoptive parents are deceased and she has been living with her grandmother. The grandmother, though, has dementia and is now being put into a home. Sadie’s only option is to go live with her Aunt Violet (and husband who have four kids).Sadie figured it would not be hard to figure out who her biological mother is in such a small town. Riley who is adopted herself understands Sadie’s need to find out who gave birth to her. Riley gives Sadie a place to stay while Sadie conducts her research.Tess (Theresa) Hendrick grew up in Pine Lake with an alcoholic mother. Tess’ father left when she was twelve, but Tess decided to stay behind with her mother. Tess dealt with her home situation by getting involved with the wrong crowd, drugs, and stealing. Tess left the area and became a trucker in North Dakota. Tess has come to Pine Lake and the camp to keep an eye on Sadie. All three ladies will go through a journey of discovery.I give Senseless Acts of Beauty 2.5 out of 5 stars. I did not enjoy this book. There is a lot of anger and teenage angst. I found a lot of paragraphs were just unnecessary. It is a book that leaves you unsettled and unhappy when the story is over. I really wanted to enjoy this book, but I ended up just reading it to get through it.I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

GREAT BOOK By Rosemary Pennington I received a free copy of this book from Goodreads First Reads in exchange for an honest review.Get those tissues ready.... you are going to need them. This is the first book I have read by Lisa Verge Higgins, and immediately I put her the same category as Jennifer Weiner. After finishing the book, I decided that Lisa Verge Higgins surpassed the emotional level of Weiner. AND, I do love Jennifer Weiner! You get a story with three points of view. The birth mother who cannot let go, the daughter searching for her birth mother, and a lady (already knee deep is family issues) who stumbles upon the runaway. All three are worthwhile, beautiful people filled with passion, anger and the need of acceptance. The life you plan is not always the life you get for you or your child.I loved the book, it was well written and well paced. I could easily imagine being a 14 year old girl abandoned first by my birth mother through adoption, THEN losing my adopted parents through death. But, it doesn't end there. She finally loses her grandmother through dementia. Well-adjusted, our Sadie is not, through her bitterness and rebellion, you see a girl crying out for help. Her story is a powerful one. Love, acceptance is forgiveness is needed on all sides of this trio.I adored this book. I would recommend it for anyone. It is safely among my keepers!Happy Reading.

Funny and empowering lead character, Sunnie, who has a TV spot that provides helpful hints (hints I have now actually used!) and has to make some tough choices about her life and career. I won't say more, you'll just have to read it. Please S.C. bring us more Sunnie!

The Life of Flavius Josephus, by Flavius Josephus

About the Author Flavius Josphus (c. A.D. 37-100) was born to an aristocratic Jewish family, served as a priest, and later became the commander of Jewish forces in Galilee following the revolt against Rome that began A.D. 66. Captured by the Romans, Josephus spent his later life in Rome under the patronage of the Roman emperors where he composed his history of the Jewish people and his account of the Jewish war that led to the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in A.D. 70.

Review on "THE LIFE OF FLAVIUS JOSEPHUS" By Vernon I have frequently read excerpts from religious historians, quoting from Josephus to underline their theories and/or assertions. Thus was my interest in reading this book on Josephus' life, time & adventures - as well as his writings. His references seem authentic and full of first hand references on and around the life and times of the Christ, even though they must have been in retrospect. Even so; he does repeatedly record events which provide early references to the time immediately following Christ's crucifixion and the Roman reactions to Christ's followers and their embracing Him as the Messiah.Great reading, and I am in the process of reading it again with a more critical mind and with constant cross reference to my bible. I thoroughly recommend this to curious minded bible students and scholars.

Edelman Josephus is probably the most interesting historian of the Roman emperor, not least because his first-person account of the life of Jesus is the single most reliable contemporary account that has survived to the present. He lived for 63 years, and during much of that chronicled the events of the Eastern Roman empire, first as a loyal Roman, and later as a more independent voice.Born Joseph ben Matityahu, Josephus was part of the failed first Jewish revolt against Rome and thanks to his literary skills, ended up as a prisoner and servant to Vespatian instead of being killed or sold into slavery. He proved a loyal hagiographer, telling the story of the struggle from Rome's point of view in "The Jewish Wars," and was freed on the death of the Emperor. But later in life , as a free man, Josephus regained his Jewish identity, and made it his mission to educate Rome as to the ancient history and the philosophy of the Jews, and to this end produced his "Antiquities of the Jews." He followed this with "Against Apion," which argued against the belief of some Romans (notably Apion) that Judaism was a recent cult without a strong philosophical and moral tradition.Whiston's translation is a bit on the archaic side and tries to capture the peripatetic style familiar to reader of the King James Bible, in which the sentences go on and on, with clause after clause, and so on and so on and..... But Whiston's choice of words is more modern than archaic, and the result is that this is not a difficult read. I've been told that the Brill translation is the best, but to my eyes, at least, there's not a tremendous difference between his and Whiston's; both keep the archaic style. At any rate, given the price of the Kindle edition I'm not complaining.
