Clear, concise and helpful By Donna Andersen In this slim, wonderful book, Dr. Ault promises to take you, step by step, through the process of disengaging from an abusive partner — and she delivers. I'm author of Lovefraud.com and have read many books about dealing with disordered people. This is the most clear, concise and helpful “how to” for breaking away from a toxic person that I have ever read. The Five Step Exit is a collection of advice, strategies and exercises that will enable you to take your life where you want it to go. Throughout the book, Dr. Ault asks questions to help you crystalize how you can move forward. For example:• What are your priorities? What is at risk? What are you willing to sacrifice? What needs to be protected?• Your ex may try to re-engage with you. What are the goals of your toxic ex in these efforts?• What if you get Hoovered, and you fall hook, line and sinker for one of your ex’s ploys to suck you in?Dr. Ault helps you think through all of these situations, and more, so that you are as prepared as you can be for anything that may happen.Getting out of the relationship is half of the battle. The other half is to “re-ground yourself in your own life, desires and wellbeing.”The Recovery section of Dr. Ault’s book is full of healing suggestions to help you create life after the sociopath. She recognizes that some involvements with sociopaths of leave us in financial ruin, so many of her suggestions are free — all they require are your time and attention. These include going outside, journaling and freedom rituals. Some suggestions are surprising, like social dancing — including ballroom, tango and country. Social dance “lets us make gentle physical and social contact with others in pleasant, affirming environments,” Dr. Ault says. “And it’s a lot of fun.”All in all, The Five Step Exit is chock-full of sound advice and solid strategies for getting out of the craziness and moving forward to the sane, peaceful and happy life that you truly deserve. If you want to leave the sociopath, this slender book tells you exactly how to do it. Highly recommended.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Very helpful advice on a graceful exit By Kayaker I just finished reading this book and plan to recommend it to my friends who could use a little advice on how to get out of a bad relationship, straight and gay/lesbian. I found it to be informative and witty, a hard combination to pull off in the writing world. I'm sorry that the first review of this book is so full of sour grapes, I'm guessing it is written by someone who has been on the other end of a skillful, but necessary, exit. Ignore that review, the book is worth reading.

Garden of Death chapter one Willow McQuade’s Favorite Medicinal Plants ALOE VERA Botanical name: Aloe barbadensis Medicinal uses: Aloe is a handy plant that no household should be without. This juicy, succulent plant features spiky leaves that contain a thick gel that you can use topically to soothe and heal minor burns, sunburns, and blisters and prevents scarring. You can also use it for insect bites, rashes, acne, and other skin conditions like eczema, poison ivy, and poison oak. Place this hardy plant on your kitchen windowsill or plant in your garden. Just make sure your aloe plant has sunshine, well-drained soil, and moderate water, and then watch it grow and reap the many benefits it provides! Gardening is one of my favorite natural remedies. I can think of no better pursuit than plunging a trowel into the moist, brown earth, removing enough dirt to create a space for a beautiful, health-giving plant, and watching it grow. It was the third Friday in June, and I was up to my knees in dirt and loving it. The last few weeks had brought pastel-blue skies, billowy clouds, and the delicious summery scent of sea air drifting in from the bay. In the tree above me, cardinals and catbirds twittered and cawed. It was a perfect day for gardening. I finished digging, picked up a chamomile plant, gently placed it into the hole, shoveled in some earth, and patted the ground around it. Then I pulled off my gloves, sat back on my heels, and reviewed what I’d done so far that afternoon. I’d planted over a dozen plants in the garden’s Medicinal Herbs for Heart Health section. The leaves and flowers fluttered in the sea breeze, but the roots of the plants were secure. I dispense natural remedies, both as a naturopathic doctor and as the owner of Nature’s Way Market & Café. The store originally belonged to my aunt Claire. But when Claire was murdered, I left Los Angeles for good and moved back to my hometown of Greenport, on the East End of Long Island. I knew I had to find Claire’s murderer, which—to the local cops’ surprise—I did. Almost as difficult was taking over Nature’s Way. I couldn’t let everything that Claire had worked so hard to build disappear. Now, a little more than a year later, I felt like an actual business owner. Nature’s Way was operating in the black, and I was ready for a new project. Last June I took a trip to London to visit a cousin, and while I was there I visited the Chelsea Physic Garden. Claire had often raved about it, but I had never had the chance to see it for myself. I was both enchanted and educated by the section with medicinal plants for various conditions. Three months later, in October, I learned that the empty plot of land next door to Nature’s Way, a little over two acres in size, had become available. The lot was completely overgrown with scrub and weeds and needed a lot of TLC, but I had the soil tested for pH and nutrient content and it was top-notch. So I jumped at the opportunity to re-create what I’d seen in London. I had my next project. My garden, like the one in London, would showcase various types of plants and use them to educate the local community about the many health benefits of herbs that people can grow at home, such as aloe for burns, turmeric for arthritis, and fennel for indigestion. I planned to hold workshops in the garden and store to show people how to grow and use these herbs. Now, all of the classes were almost full and I planned to add more. Tomorrow, on the first day of the annual Maritime Festival, all of Claire’s friends would gather, and I would officially open the Claire Hagen Memorial Physic Garden. Since the festival first began in 1990, so many events had been added that we locals could barely keep track. But my favorites were the opening day parade, visits from tall ships, boat races, the clam chowder and best pie contests, and the annual pirate invasion, complete with treasure hunts and mermaids. The whole week would be given over to festivities, the town filled with visitors. It seemed the perfect time to open the new garden to the public. Qigong (pronounced chee-gung), my scruffy, black, gray, and white terrier, ran up and put his nose in the dirt next to me. He sniffed, decided something was hidden there, and started digging with his chunky little paws. I patted his head. “Thanks, buddy. I appreciate the help.” “Need help, hon?” Jackson Spade glanced over at me from the north end of the garden, where he’d been working with our new gardening assistant, Nate Marshall. They were putting down paver stones as a patio for our new outdoor teahouse. Nate, a recent graduate of Stony Brook’s horticulture program, was tall and lanky, with owlish glasses that gave him a scholarly look. He also had a remarkable green thumb. Jackson said all Nate had to do was look at a plant and it would thrive, which was a bit of an exaggeration—but not by much. Fortunately, Nate had signed on to care for the garden throughout the summer. Jackson told Nate he’d be right back and came over to me. Dressed in his old jeans, a Green Day T-shirt, and boots, he was covered with dirt from working all day in the garden, but it didn’t matter. With his short cropped hair, just enough stubble to be sexy, and dreamy blue eyes, he made me melt. Jackson and I met last year when he had come to Nature’s Way looking for more natural remedies for his bad back. Aunt Claire had helped him feel better with the cures she’d recommended, and he was hoping for further improvement. Jackson was grateful for Claire’s help and kindness and so he agreed to help me in my quest to find her murderer. The fact that he was an ex-cop, now on disability because of his back, had worked in our favor. We nabbed the killers and along the way, fell in love. Now, it felt as if we had been together forever. “I’m okay,” I said. “Qigong is doing a great job digging holes.” “I’ll bet,” he said. “I think he’s a little jealous of Nate. Qigong wants to be your chief gardening assistant.” “No one digs a hole like you do,” I assured the dog. Then I got up and pulled Jackson into a hug. “But you’re the best. I couldn’t have done all this without you.” I gave him a kiss. “Now you have dirt on your nose,” he said, smiling. He pulled a bandana from his back pocket, gently wiped the dirt off, and kissed my nose. “Okay, you’re all set.” I glanced at the sky that was suddenly full of clouds, blocking out the late-afternoon sun. “What time is it?” I asked. Jackson checked his watch. “It’s almost five. Time flies when you’re having fun in the garden.” I pulled off my gardening gloves. “It sure does. But we need to get ready. Tonight’s the big night. I get to see you in a tux.” Jackson’s wardrobe usually consisted of jeans, a T-shirt, and boots, but tonight we were going to the Land and Sea Ball, the opening event of the festival, and Jackson had promised to wear a tux. He looked good in anything, but I was certain he was going to be a knock-out all dressed up. “And I get to see you in that gown that makes you look like Cinderella.” He gave me a quick kiss. “I just need to clean up over there.” He turned to start back to Nate and the open-air teahouse. But before he could take a step, Qigong, done digging, dropped something at his feet. It was a rectangular object wrapped in what looked like an old dish towel. Jackson bent and unwrapped the towel, revealing a small cardboard box. Or at least it had been. It was nearly flattened now, the cardboard thin with age and barely holding its rectangular shape. “Hmm . . . no wording on the box,” Jackson observed. He lifted what was left of its lid, and I saw a glint of metal inside. “Why would anyone bury one earring?” he muttered. “What do you mean?” I asked. He brushed off some dirt, then held it out to me—a delicate gold earring with an exquisite heart-shaped setting. “There’s only one in here,” he said. “I wonder why.” “It looks really old,” I said. “It’s probably an antique.” “What kind of stone is that?” I squinted at the colorless stone in the middle. Even under the cloudy skies, it had a sparkle to it. “There’s so much dirt around the edges, it’s hard to be sure. But I think . . . it might be a diamond.” “We should find the other one,” Jackson said. He took my spade and dug into the ground, but even with Qigong helping him, he didn’t find the other earring. “Nothing here, but I could get that one appraised.” “Go for it,” I said. “If it’s valuable, you can use the money for your animal refuge.” A year ago, after Jackson adopted two abused dachshunds, he decided to open a haven for animals at his place in East Marion, which was five minutes from Greenport. He had plenty of space, enough for a garden and room for the animals to run free. So far, he had acquired a horse, two donkeys, a goat, five dogs, six cats, two rabbits, and a turtle—and three dedicated volunteers to help him run things. “Are you sure?” he asked. “This could really be worth something.” “You know I’m not into jewelry,” I said with a shrug. “But I do like helping your refuge. So keep it.” I handed him the earring, and he dropped it into his pocket. “Thanks, McQuade. That’s very nice of you.” “No problem.” I began to put my tools back into the gardening basket. “I think we’re in good shape for tomorrow, don’t you?” “Well, the patio isn’t done yet, but I think the garden is really impressive. You’re ready.” I blew out a breath. “Good, so we can just relax and have fun tonight.” “Sounds like a plan. I just have to do some cleanup with Nate.” I picked up the basket and gave him another quick kiss. Even when he was covered with dirt, Jackson was ridiculously kissable. “If you hurry, we can shower together. It’s really much more environmentally friendly.” “Sounds good to me. As you know, I can be very friendly,” Jackson said, smiling. “That’s what I’m counting on,” I said, smiling back at him. •   •   • Nature’s Way Market & Café was located on Front Street, across from Mitchell Park. The building, a three-story yellow Victorian with red trim, had outdoor seating on the porch, which was ideal when you wanted to catch the sea breeze or the morning sun. A black wrought-iron fence surrounded the property, and brightly colored flowers accented the walkway. The interior was whimsical and charming with chalkboard specials and aisles of natural cures and natural foods. Jackson had recently put up bookshelves, and I’d packed them with volumes on everything natural from yoga to meditation to superfoods. Next to the bookshelves was an oversized bulletin board with postcards and photos from customers who had visited Nature’s Way from places as far away as Russia, Japan, India, and Australia. The walls were painted a cheery lime green with lemon trim, so the place had a bright, sunny feel even on a cloudy day. As always, the air was redolent with the smells of healthy food, excellent coffee, and homemade baked breads and pastries. At this late hour, there were few occupied tables and no one behind the counter where we sold sandwiches, pastas, smoothies, soups, and salads along with gluten-free chocolate brownies, carrot cake, and cupcakes. I went into the kitchen, where my genius baker and second-in-command, Merrily Scott, was taking freshly baked bread from the oven. Merrily, who was twenty-three, had the energy of the Energizer Bunny, helped along by the caffeine in our organic coffee. Cute and perky, she wore the Nature’s Way uniform of jeans, a white T-shirt, and a green apron, her short blond hair in tufts with tiny colored bands. The customers loved her food and her attitude. I couldn’t have asked for a better employee. “That smells amazing,” I said. Merrily gave a little start. “Oh, you scared me. I thought I was alone.” “Just on my way through.” I held up the gardening basket. “I wanted to put this inside, and then I need to shower and get ready.” “I can’t wait to see you two all dressed up.” She slid the loaf of bread onto the counter. “You’re both going to look great.” “I know Jackson will,” I said, grinning. I walked over to the checkout counter and stashed the basket on a lower shelf. “I just wish you didn’t have to serve the desserts.” Nature’s Way had agreed to provide the desserts for the ball this year, and Merrily had outdone herself. “Actually,” she said as she came over to me, “Nate invited me to go the ball with him, so Wallace is coming to handle the service. We’ll help, too, if we’re needed, don’t worry.” I wasn’t worried at all. Wallace Byron was a pro who had owned his own health food store until he retired, but I was surprised that she and Nate had hooked up so quickly. He’d only been here for a few weeks, and he was already dating my manager. Still, he seemed like a nice guy. “Well, you’d better get ready, too.” She took off her apron and slid it into a cubbyhole under the counter. “I was just waiting for the bread to come out of the oven. I’ll see you there.” •   •   • After Jackson and I took a nice, long soapy shower together with fantastic smelling organic lavender bathing gel, we got dressed. I’d chosen a little black dress. Actually, it was a classic silk and lace strapless evening gown from the 1950s that looked like something Audrey Hepburn would have had in her closet. The strapless bodice was boned and the skirt made of three layers, sheer lace, sheer silk organdy, and black taffeta. When I looked at myself in the mirror, I couldn’t help but be reminded of how much I looked like my aunt when she was younger. Both of us were tall and blond, with blue eyes, high cheekbones, and good teeth, the teeth of the tiger, my aunt used to say. I felt a pang of sorrow over how much I missed her. “Hurry up,” Jackson said, through the bathroom door. “I want to see you.” I did a final check of my hair and makeup, opened the door, and stepped into the bedroom. “Wow,” Jackson said. “Wow.” He came over to me. “You do look like Cinderella, that is, if Cinderella ever wore black.” “You don’t look too shabby yourself,” I replied. “In fact, you look incredibly handsome. Just like James Bond.” He wore a classic black shawl-collar tuxedo jacket, shirt, and pants, along with suspenders and cuff links, topped off by a spiffy black bow tie that I bought at the same vintage store where I bought my dress. I’d even managed to find black pointy toe winklepicker oxfords in his size to complete the look. The contrast between his rugged good looks and the formal ensemble made quite an impression. He pulled me close and I felt his warmth. The smell of his coconut aftershave was sexy. “I want to take you to bed right now,” he said, his voice husky as his hand ran up my leg. “I mean, right now.” “But we’ll be late,” I said, laughing. “And you know that Cinderella can’t be late for the ball.”

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Good cozy By Rhonda 4 starsThis is exciting mystery. Murder, pirate treasure and romance. Lots of suspects, don't know who to trust. It is a clean read. Makes me want to go and visit the festival and see Nature's Way Market & Café.Willow McQuade has got her medicinal garden ready to open. Nature’s Way Market & Café is owned by Willow. Her boyfriend is Jackson Spade. The lot that she put her garden in was next door to her business. For some reason she won the right to own the land. Which made her a lot of enemies that wanted that property but lost the bid. When checking the garden for the first tour she finds a dead body in the garden. Dr. Charles White. He accused her the night before of cheating to get the property. Willow's boyfriend becomes the main suspect. Willow has solved other cases of murder this past year. Her ex-boyfriend Simon and others want her to solve this one. The detectives don't like her and her friends. People are trying to shut her Garden down and calling it a Garden of Death. Really bitter and angry results it causes. Someone is looking for things in the garden at night. They even find some treasure in the garden but the cops don't listen to her. In front of each chapter is a medical herb that she likes and tells what it has been used for in the past. It is interesting and a good start to find out about the plants. I like Willow and her friends. I want to read the first two books of the series now. I was given Garden of Death to read so that I could give a honest review and be part of Garden of Death book tour.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A good read By Holly This is another good book in the series. I can't wait for the next one.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The author steped this up in this installment. By Lori Caswell/Dollycas Dollycas’s ThoughtsWillow’s Market and Cafe sounds absolutely wonderful as does the new garden, sans the dead body, of course. She does spend a lot of time away though hunting down suspects and killers though. Thankfully most of her help is pretty dependable and she has her boyfriend, Jackson Spade, at her side, both at the shop and on the investigations. This time though he happens to be be the prime suspect.I did enjoy the whole buried treasure and pirate theme. The Maritime Festival is an annual event in Greenport, hopefully there will be no one killed in the coming years but with a cozy set in a small town you just never know :)An added treat is that each chapter tells us about a healing plant, like Aloe Vera, Evening Primose, and even Nettle.Chrystle Fiedler has stepped things up with this installment. I felt the first 2 books were a little heavy on the homeopathic remedy education but she has really found a balance in her writing. While I liked those stories, I loved this one. Plenty of suspects and a very well developed plot made this a very fast read.I disliked more than a few of the characters because of the way they treated Willow, you would have thought she had built some sort of eyesore instead of a beautiful garden. The characters rang true though as some people just stick together and act first before they have the facts and in this case it could land them in jail or worse.I am anxious already for the next installment.

The title is confusing, as I spent the entire time trying to interpret how it applied to the story or wondering when it would be used as a line by one of the main characters...never happened! Additionally, the characters were not always believable...the fight scenes...please insert a straight face here! Overall, it was a good way to pass the time on my train rides to and from work. Great books/audiobooks make you want to indulge on your lunch breaks, downtime, and when you're spending time at home on the weekends. This book did not have that affect on me. Nevertheless, it was an effective means of avoiding weird/unwelcome interactions with other commuters. I will say that I like many of the author's other works and was a little let down by this. It read more like a first book than that of an accomplished author.

I just could not put this book down. Suspense! I was on pins and needles wondering what would happen next. Ms. Winters I have say I do not trust sequels at least not in the past. Somehow after the first book the sequels just don't get better. But this one was as good if not better than the first. The other thing is if one had not read the first book they could still keep up with the characters because you share their past.

I didnt like the decited that the main charcater protrayed by leaving here close friends out of the loop about the extra marital affair she had. Other than that it was a good read...

Sam Butler thinks his life should be about pastern dermatitis, least common denominators and the sophomore pole vaulter from Slovenia. But it isn't. Sam is a retired widower, who lives a quiet, well-ordered life looking after a small herd of off-the-track Thoroughbreds. Ellen Quincy is a home-schooled 'tweener, whose family raises chickens on the other side of the highway. Lynda Stratford is a young physics professor from the nearby university. This odd and non-romantic triangle forms in the fall of 2012, and the story follows the three of them for the next six months, a half-year in which Sam's life is turned inside-out, profoundly and perhaps forever changed. It's a story about love and friendship, about loyalty and its breach, about what's lost and what's found. A story about horses, lasers, and a young girl, wondering about life, death and what follows.

By Tom Robert Laurence has written another gem.The Math Tutor doesn't have too much to do with math but that's not to say there are no complex problems within its pages. The title character is Sam Butler, a widower; retired law professor; keeper of retired race horses; and volunteer math tutor for a young, home schooled, Christian girl who lives across the road in the Ozark mountain area of Arkansas near Fayetteville. In his earlier novel, Departure Lounge, Mr Laurence had strong female characters. The same is true in The Math Tutor as the author explores the relationships among Sam and the memory of his deceased wife; the young girl whom he tutors; an aggressivephysics professor at the University of Arkansas; the young girl's grandmother; and the several thoroughbred mares for whom he cares.Woven in that framework are life conflicts of a retired, widowed professor living among very conservative Christians not far from the more liberal academic community in which he once served. Having one foot in each of those environs brings to light the inevitable town-gown conflicts, issues of academic ethics, and religious tolerance and lack thereof. In the end the most religiously tolerant of the characters suffers the most.Readers of Departure Lounge will remember that the author has a wide variety of interests. Once again, evidence of many of them are sprinkled throughout the book. You'll learn a little about Wallace Spearman, Jr., Dan Gurney, P. G. Wodehouse college track and field and lots about horses. Know what a horse's chestnut is? If you do, you'll like the book. If you don't you will learn something.

By Sue P This is the second book I have read by this author, enjoyed them both, found them to be different, I think this author is knowledgeable about many subjects. The Math Tutor has many layers, could be a good discussion group book. A main character is a young girl, very different from the "musty, old" author but he captured her well. Other characters were also well written, one was a.......(a conundrum to me), she would be fun to discuss. If this author is working on another story to tell, I would look forward to the read.

Robert Laurence's latest novel is a love song to horses By Ona Russell On one level, Robert Laurence's latest novel is a love song to horses, particularly retired Thoroughbreds. But it is also a complex and beautifully written story about how essential, albeit difficult, it is to seek out meaningful human connections.

Sex . . . drugs . . . guitars . . . and revolution! From inside a maximum-security prison comes this exclusive memoir from the bandleader who forever changed rock and roll—and the world. The Triangle started as just another bar band from Seattle. But as the country exploded with righteous rage, they found themselves with a headlining gig at the revolution. From their jagged first tour, through their trials with a zombifying psychotropic drug and the destruction of a national treasure that sealed their infamy, The Triangle stayed one step ahead of the law . . . until one fateful encounter with luck and love taught them the true meaning of rock and roll.

Honest characters and a great look into the 'inside baseball' of a touring band. Drugs, social implosions and music, I rarely tear through a book and I'd highly recommend the Triangle.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Must-Read for Music Fans By Ryan Rosoff This was a fantastic, hilarious, and trippy ride. Anyone who has ever played in a band, been on tour, or just obsessed about popular music will love this book. All of the cliches are addressed and ripped to shreds, and the verisimilitude that the author brings to the band interaction reveals his obvious musical IQ. Only a bar band veteran could have conceived of such a story...My highest recommendation!

Hard crime, hard music, hard drugs, hard sex -- all delivered with a searing, piercing, cynical view of the rock scene -- it sent this rock 'n roll junkie to the rafters. J Buck has obviously been there, done that, and he's written about what he knows well. You can feel it. Highly recommended.

Chasing a man wasn't something she did.Come on, Vec, it's Qasim Wilder.Vectra Bauer thinned her lips and tried to drive the silent reminder from her mind. She guessed that most women would likely deem Qasim Wilder a man worthy of being chased.Truth be told, Vectra herself could easily subscribe to the same notion if not for the fact that the man in question had been acting decidedly weird for the past few months. They had enjoyed what she'd considered a pretty nice friendship until he had very noticeably begun to distance himself. As a woman who maintained a short list of close friends, Vectra couldn't afford to lose any—weird acting or not.Which came to the point of her visit: chasing a man, indeed. She cast yet another speculative glance around the fortieth-floor private lobby outside the office for the president of Wilder. Qasim's financial savvy was as coveted as his looks. His name was so well known, his skills so respected, that there was no need to add additional wording to the business moniker.Money was Qasim's game, and he was loved for it. If only I were here to discuss business, Vectra thought. She rubbed a clammy palm across the flaring hem of a casual cap-sleeved frock that hugged her unintentionally athletic figure. She'd come to discuss a party, of all things. Vectra puffed out her cheeks and tried to preoccupy herself by attempting to count the cars crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, which stood in distinctive red splendor across the Bay. She managed to content herself with the fact that she at least didn't have to worry over being turned down. After all, she wasn't there to extend an invite. The distinguished Mr. Wilder had made it very clear that a friendship with her was something he no longer had time for.At least that was what his actions had suggested. Qasim had yet to come out and tell her what exactly had his boxers twisted. Rolling her eyes away from the stunning bridge, Vectra gave a mental sigh. Thoughts raging, she worked hard at putting her focus elsewhere. Periodicals were neatly arranged on a low marble coffee table set in the center of the lobby's upscale reception area. She wondered if she'd be waiting long enough to pick one of them and dive in."Vectra?"It took a second or three for her to realize someone had actually called her name and that it hadn't been her trusty inner voice. She turned, an instant smile curving her mouth when she saw Qasim's assistant, Minka Gerald. She stood a few feet away from the large oak desk that occupied a spot in the workplace, which claimed almost the entire wall opposite an impressive line of floor-to-ceiling windows.Minka quickly closed the distance between them. "Gosh, it's been forever!""It has." Vectra squeezed Minka's hands when the woman gave hers a shake. She could feel some of her apprehension dissolve as Minka's sunny demeanor worked its charms upon her."What are you doing waiting in the lobby?" Minka stopped squeezing Vectra's hands and tugged them insistently. "You'll be a lot more comfortable in Qasim's office.""Minka… " Vectra bit her lip for an instant. "I don't think that's such a good idea.""Ah." Minka poked out her tongue and buzzed out a breath. "He's at lunch and won't be a bit happy to find you waiting in the lobby. Even if it is a private one."Vectra didn't have the heart to tell the woman that what would probably make her boss happiest was for her not to be there at all. She decided against arguing. She was returning to the waiting area to collect her bag when a man arrived at Minka's desk."Mink! Sim around?""Hey, Will." Minka threw a smile over her shoulder. "He's still at lunch."The man tapped the edge of the thin manila folder against his palm. He appeared to be weighing his options. "Any idea how long he'll be? I got some stuff for him to sign.""Well, he left before I did." Minka secured her burgundy tote into a bottom drawer along the black credenza behind her desk. "I'm not sure how long he's been gone and when he does get back you'll still have to wait." She gave a slight nod past the man's shoulder."William Lloyd, Vectra Bauer," Minka made the introductions. Will met Vectra between the waiting area and Minka's desk, where he shook her hand. "Pretty sure Sim'll be much happier to see you here than me."Vectra smiled, humored by the man's tease. "Don't count on it.""Is there anything I can do, Will?" Minka offered."I don't see why not." Will turned, brows rising as his gaze crested above Minka's head. He grinned. "But no need to worry yourself.""Sim." Minka laughed. "Great timing."Vectra turned, too. She wasn't all that surprised to find Qasim Wilder wearing a dour expression, which he aimed directly at her. "Hey, Qasim," she managed, albeit softly."Vectra."She could detect obvious surprise riddling Qasim's deep, soft voice. An edgier quality tempered the sound, however, before he seemed to lose all interest and completely dismissed her.Qasim moved with his trademark stealth. An asset honed by his years in the military. He extended a hand toward the other man."Sorry for the bother, man." Grinning, Will heartily engaged in the handshake. "I need the go-ahead for a few things. Need your name on the line before I can move forward. Hotel people are some picky folk.""What's up?" Qasim took the folder Will offered."Mostly pricing details. They want to know if I'm authorized to accept the quotes.""All right." Qasim scanned the folder's contents. "I'll get this back to you soon." He passed the file to Minka. "Let's see about drafting a document for Will to have on hand as proof that I've given him the authority to make any decisions needed to organize this thing."Minka smiled at Will. "I'll have the folder ready as soon as Sim has time to look it over. We'll have to give you a call once legal draws up the signing doc, okay?" She looked to her boss for approval.Qasim's nod was confirmation enough and then he left the group.Feeling thoroughly snubbed as he strolled off without another word, Vectra forbade herself from making one move. From the corner of her eye, she could almost see Minka and Will exchanging curious looks over Sim's slight. She gave a start when a loud knock echoed out over the space.Qasim had returned to the lobby and was looking at Vectra from where he'd dropped the loud knock against the wall that shielded the long corridor leading to his office suite."You coming?" he called.Vectra heard no hospitality in the words, only tense patience. She watched his inky-black stare scanning the length of her and wondered whether Minka or Will could read their boss's mind as easily as she did.Apparently, they had noticed their boss's agitation. They quickly left her side. Minka returned to her desk."Nice to meet you." Will squeezed Vectra's arm on his way past."Same here," Vectra called to his departing figure. She could have easily been amused by the sense of dread filling the area were she not the one caught in the crosshairs.Qasim didn't wait for her to reach him at the corner of the hallway. Instead, he headed on down the carpeted, portrait-lined space. Vectra attempted to assess his mood as he walked before her. Not that his icy manner in the lobby hadn't been hint enough, but he acted like she'd been the one to go all antisocial when it'd been the other way around. At any rate, it was no hardship to follow and observe him at a distance. Qasim's love for outdoor activity was evident even beneath his standard suit-and-tie work attire. That day, a walnut-brown three-piece suit adorned his toned, licorice-dark frame. They had been friends long enough for her to know that he hated ties. He usually discarded whichever one he wore either just before or right after lunch. The guy loved his comfort and the fact didn't diminish the stunning craftsmanship of his body or face.Bottomless dark eyes competed with the ebony richness of heavy brows and the sleep cap of hair he wore close cut. His facial hair was tamed into an intentional five o'clock shadow that partly hid a cleft chin and the faint lines that proved he was easy with his smiles.Vectra blinked suddenly, at once regretting and realizing how much time she'd taken to admire the man's face and form. The fact made her wonder whether she'd subjected any of her other male friends to such scrutiny. Doubtful. Her male friends were just that—just friends. Or, rather, they had been…until she met Qasim; he was a male friend she would have preferred become much more.He opened one of the towering maple doors leading to his office. Vectra quickened her pace when she realized he was going to hold it for her as though she were an actual welcomed visitor. In spite of his polite manners, however, she could've sworn she picked up on a low yet distinctive sound of agitation. That sound rumbled through his chest when she passed him on her way into the room.If ever there was an office that personified its owner, it's Qasim's, she thought. The place was a testament to pretty much everything he held dear. One far, expansive corner was a hive of activity with wide-screen monitors broadcasting both financial and sports news from their perches atop a pair of pristine maple desks. Towering bookcases lined the room and were filled with pictures, plaques, awards and books spanning a range of genres. Above the cases nearest the desks was a stock ticker.Vectra set her tote on one of the square black leather chairs that surrounded an impressive gaming area. She wondered if nice or nasty was the way to begin their conversation. She didn't have long to debate."Coming to invite me to another party, Vec?"The words carried over Qasim's broad shoulder as he headed into his work area. He removed his suit coat, slung it over the back of the sofa he passed and smiled in her direction when he turned.Okay, then… she decided, accepting that the conversation would be a tad strained. "Actually, I came to ask why I've been selected as the lucky one to get the brunt of the petty side of your personality?"He smiled. While the gesture held a great deal of humor, the air of agitation remained."Qasim?" Vectra's attempt to remain steely gave way, and her curiosity got the better of her. "Why are you angry with me?" She didn't care for the pleading tone that clung to her words, but she wanted answers.Qasim appeared taken aback, but recovered soon enough. "I'm not angry with you." He made a pretense of reviewing the folders lying open on his desk."Well, you're something. What'd I do?" Curiosity had given way to a smidge of self-consciousness while she stood before him. Something changed. His smile was gone, and the look that replaced it was observant in a way that made Vectra flush with heat.Another of the agitated rumbles surged in Qasim's chest, and he pushed back the wide black leather chair behind his desk.Vectra could hear nothing over her heart beating wildly as anticipation had its way with her.Qasim didn't take a seat in the chair; instead, he headed in Vectra's direction and then shifted toward the maple wet bar, which displayed a wide array of liquor bottles in various shapes and sizes.Quietly, Qasim went about preparing Vectra's vodka tonic, which he set firmly upon the bar top. From the full-size black fridge behind him, he retrieved his beer of choice and popped the top.He tipped the bottle to his mouth. "I'm not angry with you."Vectra stood in place, nervously rubbing her fingers together while she observed Qasim with a wary gaze. He motioned with his bottle for her to take the vodka. Vectra didn't care how eagerly she accepted. The drink went a long way in calming her ridiculously frazzled nerves. The lush line of Qasim's mouth grew even lusher as a smile emerged. She rolled her eyes. "You said that already, so excuse me for not believing you." She gave him her back, keeping the drink clutched securely between her hands.Qasim allowed his emotions greater purchase while Vectra's back faced him. He didn't realize the blackness of his stare softened as it always did when just the mere thought of her stirred. He watched her sip from the glass but noticed that she didn't empty it. She put more distance between them, which gave him time to absorb the missed sight of her.The more time they spent together, the more she stunted his ability to properly think or even speak. He'd masked it for as long as he could. When he could no longer do that, he latched on to his only option.Because he didn't want to be her friend. He wanted much more. She finished her drink and turned on him. "You shut me out. I thought we were friends and then you—you stopped calling, stopped taking my calls. Why? What'd I do?"Qasim took another swig of his beer and gave a half shrug. "Guess you won't accept the 'it's not you, it's me' defense?""No." She produced a cool smile and set her glass on the bar with more force than needed. "And I've got a good conversation starter since clearly you can't get the discussion going. Robb's party? It's tonight. When we spoke a while ago, I got the impression that you didn't have a date, either, so I thought we could go together. When you shot me down, I decided to ask someone else. He turned me down, too, but thankfully he told me why he had to say no before I ran off to embarrass myself by asking someone else.""Lew?" At her confirming nod, Qasim rolled his eyes.Lewis Olin was a mutual friend who struggled with the concept of keeping secrets. While people tended to admire the man's honesty, they often found the trait to be a nuisance."Why don't you want anyone else to take me to the party?" Her voice was quiet."I didn't tell him that." Qasim finished his beer and turned to the bar fridge for another just to have a reason to shield the truth from his eyes."No, Qasim, you told Lew you'd break his hand before he could press the send button when he mentioned calling me to ask me to Robb's party. Why would you say that?""I didn't mean it." Silently, though, Qasim feared that the threat had been all too real at the time. He lost his taste for the second beer, slamming the fridge door shut to round on her. "You're an idiot if you don't know why I wouldn't want anyone else to take you out.""I'm no idiot, Sim." At least not about that. "I just want to hear you say it.""I can't be your friend." Qasim pushed off the bar, massaging the bridge of his nose.Vectra blinked twice in rapid succession. The words were like a slap, yet they hadn't rendered her speechless. "You can't be my friend and you don't want anyone else to be my friend, either?"

The chemistry that Qasim and Vectra experience is palpable and Ms. Washington is effortless in capturing this tale of scintillating seduction while exploring what is holding these two apart. Qasim is your quintessential alpha male while Vectra undoubtedly holds her own as a beautiful and brilliant woman unafraid to speak her mind. Yet, they both exposed a certain vulnerability in each and I LOVED IT!!! The love scenes are nothing short of exquisite...tastefully done and accomplished their intended goal of making the audience crave for more of Sim and Vec!!! Although I felt this story was definitely complete, Ms. Washington could have EASILY added more layers to their journey and I couldn't help but wanting so much more. Not a disappointment, just an observation...as I'm sure that this was strategic given possible sequels to come. Finally, I would be remissed if I didn't notice the stark similarities between Ms. Washington's characters and two characters of another one of my favorite writers, Maureen Smith with Remington Brand and Zandra Kennedy in "Any Way You Want It." I'm a fan of both writers and if you loved "Any Way You Want It" as I did, "Embrace My Heart" will have the same effect on you as Qasim is Remy reincarnated! Woooo chile!! Well done AlTonya!!

They both love each other, but are afraid that the past will keep them from finding each other's heart. This is a story of revealing what the right person can do to mend a person's soul. I really enjoyed the book.Vectra is a woman who has a strong family presence which includes and overly protective father and brother. Qasim grew up in the foster system and feels he has issues with being too possessive. Neither one feels they are good enough for the other. A great book has a believable storyline and this one does. The character interaction was great, the flow was easy and consistent and the plot was well thought out. Altonya Washington did an awesome job and I look forward to reading more! 5+ stars

This couple met via a business relationship Qasim developed with Vectra’s father. In that time the two formed a “friendship” that Qasim wanted to more than just friendship. He had decided he wants more and informs Vectra that he does not want a friendship with her. Vectra is battling her own past and normally when meeting a person of the opposite sex, will designate them to the “friend” category. Qasim is not having it, and will work overtime to make Vectra realize he is the one for her and she can trust her heart and love with him.Ms. Washington has done a great job with character development in Embrace My Heart. Readers will soon realize that Qasim is a true alpha male and believes in going after what he wants. He makes it clear that he will not be relegated to the “friend” category as well as makes it known that Vectra is off limits to other male companions. Vectra is dealing with a past abusive relationship and knows that Qasim could break through her barriers but is scared to give her heart. Their journey is a powerful one that will have readers pulling for them. It is hilarious how Qasim’s possessiveness is displayed and to see his love for Vectra is great. Overall, Embrace My Heart was a good read and I anxiously await the sequel.
