Review

"This was a really good book. It has some great truths and some hard truths. Definitely great for women of all realtionship status. Whether your single, engaged, newly married or been married for years, this is a great book."

Reviewed by Kimberley McClintock, NetGalley, Oct 7, 2015

"That title caught my attention, and if you're reading this it obviously caught your attention too. Sexuality is all around us but unfortunately it is mostly exploited. So what is right and good and healthy for you as a Christian woman whether you are married or single.

Dr. Juli Slattery dives head first into all of those questions that we have but are too afraid to ask. It is a small book but the questions are deep and the answers even deeper. I appreciated the candor with which Juli answered the questions about subjects like masturbation, temptations, and adventurous activities. I cannot honestly think where else I would be able to get such godly counsel on these topics. There are many voices out there saying do it, do it, do it, but Juli presents the subject from a biblical perspective that brings freedom rather than shame. By the end of the book I can almost guarantee that you will see sex as the beautiful gift that God intended it to be.

I'm an introvert by nature and I have to be honest and say that there is no way that I would ever purchase this book in a bookstore or check it out at the library. Instead I'd read it in an obscure aisle with something hiding the cover! Thanks to online shopping or e-reader downloads I can obtain and read this book without worry.

I can't recommend this book highly enough for every woman. It will leave you with a sense of peace as well as longing for this beautiful gift of God."

"Great book whether you've been married for years, are a newlywed, fiancee or just a girl coming of age. So many things are covered and in a Christian manner that makes this easy to share with your daughter. Highly recommend this.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review via NetGalley."

A masterful depiction of a life driven off the rails by tragedy and sin—a man now summoned by the legacy of a beloved, lost brother to embark on a journey in search toward understanding, happiness, and redemption.

Haunted by the disappearance of his older brother Tommy in the first Gulf War, the tragic deaths of his parents, and the felony conviction that has branded him for a decade, Roy Joseph has labored in lonesome exile—and under the ever-watchful eyes of the law—moving between oil rigs off the coast of Louisiana and an Airstream trailer he shares with his dog.

Then, on the cusp of his thirtieth birthday, Roy is contacted by a teenage girl from California claiming to be his lost brother's biological daughter. Yearning for connection and the prospect of family, Roy embarks on a journey across America, visiting childhood haunts in the South to confront his troubled memories and history, and making a stop in Nevada to call on a retired Navy SEAL who may hold the answer to Tommy's fate. The ultimate destination is San Francisco, where a potential Russian bride and his long-lost niece await, and Roy may finally recover the Joseph line.

With The Other Joseph, Skip Horack delivers a powerful, spellbinding tale of a man nearly defeated by life who is given one last chance at redemption—one last shot to find meaning and alter the course of his solitary existence

The Other Joseph: A Novel, by Skip Horack

Review “A brilliant, gripping novel written with uncommon skill, The Other Joseph is a poignant and unflinching… novel that is as concerned with the search for the answers as it is with matters of the heart and soul. The scope of Horack’s imagination, knowledge, and empathy is striking.” (Adam Johnson, author of Emporium, Parasites Like Us, and The Orphan Master's Son)“The Other Joseph is a clear and melancholy tale...about what we can make of ourselves from the remnants. Horack’s writing is clear and evocative, and his observations... linger long after the book is finished.” (David Vann, author of Legend of a Suicide and Caribou Island)“Utterly fearless… [Horack’s] books [are] composed of subtle emotional gradations from one line to the next, only to finish in a stunningly sophisticated whole. ...big, tough, and ravishing, a ghost story...an elegy with the ache and grace of deeply lived life in it.” (Lauren Groff, author of The Monsters of Templeton, Delicate Edible Birds, and Arcadia)“Intensely grounded in a world of oil rigs, American landscapes, and ocean, The Other Joseph is a compelling, suspenseful meditation on brotherly love and family longing in a disintegrating world.” (Thomas McGuane, author of Driving on the Rim and Nothing but Blue Skies)“Memorable characters live on every page . . . Bracketed by stunning revelations, Horack’s luminous tale offers perceptive insights about the elemental connections of family.” (Kirkus)“Horack keeps the action moving and the characters believable.” (Booklist)“Skip Horack is a maestro of building slow-cooking suspense.” (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)“Skip Horack’s novel The Other Joseph is a fascinating story of redemption where the landscape breathes through every page.” (LargeheartedBoy.com)“It’s a gorgeous book, brilliant and heartbreaking and funny, with characters so well drawn they were impossible to get out of my mind. I can’t remember the last time I read a contemporary novel that had such an instant feel of a classic.” (The Rumpus.com)

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. offered up a great opportunity to do just that By Luanne Ollivier Every so often I need to take a step back from my usual genres and pick up something completely different. Skip Horack's new book, The Other Joseph, offered up a great opportunity to do just that.Roy Joseph has lost most of his life - his beloved older brother Tommy died in the Gulf War, his parents are both dead and he lives within the narrow confines of a life constricted by a felony conviction. He's chosen to live in a remote area with only a dog for company and he works an isolated job on the oil rigs. Roy has exiled himself from life. When a young woman contacts him and say that his brother Tommy was her father, he sees a chance - a chance to reconnect with life again, to redeem himself, to perhaps be happy.Roy's journey physically takes him from Louisiana to San Francisco. He visits locales from their childhood and calls on those who knew his brother along the way. Broken and wounded characters litter the road between Louisiana and San Francisco.Horack's prose are rich and powerful. They are stark and spare, underlining Roy's solitude. I was overwhelmed by Roy's life - his broken, isolated existence. It was just so very, very sad. I wasn't able to read the book straight through - I simply had to read in small doses. I wanted so badly for the the trip to be Roy's redemption. And of course you're asking - was it? It's hard to say - the ending is not what I wanted at all - Horack did surprise me. I'll have to go with an ambiguous yes and no answer. The Other Joseph was a moving, eloquent read - one that will leave echoes with you after the last page is turned

This book is so many things: the story of a man on a journey in search of family, a road trip novel, and most of all a fascinating look at the human connections we seek out. It's one of those books that's immensely readable and fun, and it was only when I looked back on a paragraph or a page that I saw all of the poetry that went into creating the sentences. Horack's writing reminds me a lot of Russell Banks, but in the end this novel is unlike any other I've read. A brilliant and unforgettable book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Compelling, rich and bristling with authenticity. By James Johnson Haunting and rich, this tale of a lost young man plays out in lovingly evoked prose. Landscapes are this author's specialty. Whether it's a Nevada mountain range, a river delta town or San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, Horack's characters are revealed by the way perceive and move through lush environments. And I love how our main character always thinks he's moving away when he's really moving toward the things that will come to fulfill him. Compelling, rich and bristling with authenticity.

Rondeau In this last book of the Burrowes’ Sweetest Kisses series, we get to see the eldest Knightley brother find his soul mate. Naturally we have met MacKenzie in the previous two books - strong, handsome and all that, but he’s always kept to himself. Finally we discover the reasons for his self imposed celibacy.Sidonie Lindstrom is a foster mom who’s moved to the farmhouse where the Knightley brothers had grown up. Sid is grieving the loss of her beloved brother, and worried sick that she might lose the Luis her foster son. She has no love for lawyers, in fact despises them, so when Mac drives up in his blacksmith truck to help her out when she discovers two huge draft horses in her pasture, she was able to lower her defenses and allow Mac help her out and figured he was a nice solid guy. Got along with her foster son; was not too hard on the eyes; and let herself more or less fall in love.Mac was very supportive and when the new DSS agent came around to inspect Luis and Sid’s home she was aware that this social service agent was nothing but trouble. Mac agreed, and when the DSS agent implied that the property would not be a suitable place for foster care, Mac was Johnny-on-the-spot with getting the property set to rights with the help of neighbors and his brothers.Ms. Burrowes goes on to indulge the reader in another court case where good people have to challenge the foster care system and endless rules that are often not in the best interest of the children. It also serves to show where a lot of the endless jokes of bad lawyers come from and that not all lawyers, should be judged by the one’s that drop the ball.Bottom line: Burrowes develops strong characters, complex plotting, subtle humor and believable scenarios, that are refreshing with an eloquent voice. What more could one ask for?Marilyn Rondeau

Now, I find her contemporary romance also sparkles and sizzles with complex characters, subtle humor, and multilayered storytelling. Her unique way of weaving words together to enthrall is amazing .She reaches in and touches the reader’s heart in a compelling way that makes one feel as if the characters are real. These characters grip the reader’s emotions and take that reader on a vicarious journey to be remembered.Sidonie Lindstrom moves her grief and her foster son to Damon Count Maryland—to country living that she knows nothing about. She’s petite, pretty, and sassy with amazing courage. But she carries a load of guilt deep inside is crushing.Luis, her teenage son of mixed ethnic heritage, loves his foster mom, but he keeps himself at a certain distance, for he too has more than his share of guilt.Mackenzie Knightley, the farrier who comes to Sidonie’s aid when she discovers two huge horses on her newly bought property, makes his living as a criminal lawyer. His back story enthralls. He is big and arrestingly handsome with a ”peat smoke” voice. His compassion and his caring ways with people and horses belie his courtroom persona. With people and horses he takes time to do little things—to pet, to feed—to talk to and gently lecture in his own special way. He too, like Sidonie and Luis, has guilt issues plus deep secrets that set him apart. The secondary characters, like Mackenzie’s brothers and their loved ones, play big roles in the unfolding of the plot. They add depth and believable to the story. The humor, work ethic, compassion, and can-do problem solving attitude keep Kiss Me Hello throbbing with activity and solid with quiet determination while love wiggles its way amongst it all to weaves its magic spell. However, there is an undercurrent of anxiety that keeps the reader just a little uneasy early on in the story and builds as an antagonist, that I really, really came to dislike, uses position and power to try to wreak havoc on lives. How Grace Burrowes gets matters resolved is different, daring, and delightful. Kiss Me Hello is wonderful reading!originally posted at long and short reviews

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Kiss Me Hello By sarah brown Sometimes there will come along a series that you absolutely fall in love with, eventually that series that you adore is going to come to an end, unfortunately Kiss Me Hello is the last book in this trilogy and I am devastated, from the very first book I've been enraptured by the three Knightley brothers and their pursuit of a happily ever after. There is only one complaint I have about this series, and that is a lack of an epilogue, I want to know what's happening two-three years later, pregnancies, marriages, adoptions and the law firm, I just feel like a lot of people who have read these books would want to know, not just me, but that's a tiny detail that I can overlook as much as it kills me because these books are awesome!Throughout the first two books the eldest Knightley brother Mackenzie 'Mac' has been an enigma, you don't really find out that much about his character at all, that's why I was so excited to read this book and finally discover who this man is and why he's been celibate for the last ten years, never showing any interest in women in that whole time, that is until he meets Sidonie 'Sid' and her foster son Luis who recently moved into his childhood home, through the appearance of two work horses Daisy and Buttercup that used to belong to the Knightley family, he gets to know Sid and Luis, and helps her fight to keep Luis with the threat of him being moved elsewhere after DSS fails to do their job properly. With both Mac and Sid having secrets that have affected both their lives up to now, can they both accept each other's problems and live happily ever after, because you just don't know when a miracle can happen, and make everyone's dreams come true.I cannot praise this series enough or Grace's fantastic writing which have made these books as great as they are, I just really, really, really don't want this series to be over, I've enjoyed each and every word, sentence, paragraph, page and chapter in my journey through the Knightley brothers stories, I wish it would have never ended. An astounding series filled with amazing characters that Grace has crafted to perfection.

Persuasion is Jane Austen's last completed novel. She began it soon after she had finished Emmaand completed it in August 1816. She died, at age 41, in 1817; Persuasion was published in December of that year. Persuasion is linked to Northanger Abbey not only by the fact that the two books were originally bound up in one volume and published together, but also because both stories are set partly in Bath, a fashionable city with which Austen was well acquainted, having lived there from 1801 to 1805.

Persuasion, by Jane Austen

About the Author One of England s most beloved authors, Jane Austen wrote such classic novels as Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, and Northanger Abbey. Published anonymously during her life, Austen s work was renowned for its realism, humour, and commentary on English social rites and society at the time. Austen s writing was supported by her family, particularly by her brother, Henry, and sister, Cassandra, who is believed to have destroyed, at Austen s request, her personal correspondence after Austen s death in 1817. Austen s authorship was revealed by her nephew in A Memoir of Jane Austen, published in 1869, and the literary value of her work has since been recognized by scholars around the world.

I know she was giving her opinion of class at the time she wrote these books and she gets her point across but I just couldn't be drawn in by the story and characters. I wanted the main characters to be together but that's about the extent of what I got out of reading it. Anne Elliott comes from a family who are so high in airs, it's beyond my imagination. Her two sisters were selfish, unloving, greedy, vain etc etc Her father the same and he never felt any affection for his youngest daughter. The mother who was very loved has passed and all Anne really has is Mrs. Russell who persuaded her against her correct match in the beginning because of names, titles etc etc. I just could not relate to this life. Also the "conflict" in the story is about the heir Mr. Elliott and Mrs. Clay the lady who is lower class but travels with Anne's father and her oldest sister. The story had one revelation of what they were conniving but other then the secret coming to Anne's attention, a meeting between the two and the end that basically says Mrs. Clay left with Mr. Elliott who will come out on top, that's it. No more detail, no confrontation so very disappointing book. I gave the book 2 stars because of the writing.

Although it is well written, as are all of her books, I admit that Persuasion is not my favorite book by Austen. I am much more enthralled by Pride and Prejudice and Emma. I can't fault the story line or the quality of the writing, and perhaps it is just me, but I had a hard time formulating much affection for the main characters.

'One of the most original and most perfect works of imagination of our time' - Edwin Muir, The Listener 'A unique achievement in modern literature' - John Boyd 'It has a charm and freshness, it is beautifully written' - James Hanley, New English Weekly Young Tom (1944) completes the trilogy of novels featuring Tom Barber, which began with Uncle Stephen (1931) and The Retreat (1936), and it is probably Forrest Reid's finest achievement. Acclaim from contemporary critics was unanimous, and the book won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize as the best novel of the year. In many ways, ten-year-old Tom is like other boys: his life centres on his parents, school, and his best friend Pascoe. But he also has another existence, equally real, in his dreams and imagination. In this novel, we follow him as he plays with his three canine companions, Barker, Pincher and Roger, befriends and communicates with a rat and a squirrel, and tries to find out what happened to Ralph Seaford, the dead boy whose ghost now haunts Tom's grandmother's attic. In exquisite prose, without sentimentality, exaggeration, or a single false note, Reid brings to life Tom, his greatest creation, and accomplishes the difficult feat of allowing readers to revisit and experience anew the wonders and mysteries of childhood. This edition features a new introduction by Andrew Doyle and a selection of never-before-published photographs.

Babian Forrest Reid's best novel about early 20th century middle-class "sensitive" youth in Ireland. I did enjoy reading this and thinking about what it must have been like when a teen was not deluged with media and conspicuous consumption.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent, Excellent, Excellent - 5 Stars By P. Ward I was blessed to have acquired this antiquated, literary masterpiece free of charge. There were no republishing issues to contend with, nor was I disappointed by any other onus that often plagues e-publishing a classic novel. This book is well-written (obviously, it's a classic), exciting, adventuresome, witty, and perceptive... just an extraordinary masterpiece. My only issue is that when I have to select another book to read, I will be extremely difficult to please for quite some time! I realize classics aren't for everyone because they can be overly descriptive by today's standards, and are often considered boring by quite a few people. However, if you love classics and literary genius like I do, this is definitely a book you must read. The story's setting is in England, the characters range from elite to servant, and the author has the extraordinary gift of bringing the characters to life in a most satisfying and creative manner. The characters have incredible depth, the protagonists are absolutely loveable, the antagonists absolutely reprehensible; however, both are equally exceptional and well-developed. There are several points of view which assist in making the story more comprehensive, and allows the author to better engage and invest the reader in the storyline. This book is a mystery, and as such, is shrouded in a whodunit atmosphere so compelling and sublime you will not be able to put the book down. Also, if you are an author, or planning on becoming one, I can think of no better book to read to help inspire your own personal ruse. Again, this is an excellent, excellent, excellent read! (The book is also lengthy, about 18 hours worth...but the time spent is, without a doubt, well worth it).

By Woodstock Mary As a lifelong reader and lover of mysteries, I'm perplexed as to how I overlooked this one, considered a classic and perhaps the first real crime thriller. I had difficulty putting it down and believe it more than lives up to its reputation. The characters are believable and sympathetic, though I found Laura a bit of a wimp and far preferred Marian, and the plot has many a twist and turn. I rated it four stars rather than five due to the wordiness, though I realize that style is representative of the era.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. YES PLEASE. By AliciaFL Love love loved this book! But be aware that you will probably only like it if you like Victorian style writing and if you are willing to ignore the annoying gender biases of the time. Other than that, it's a beautifully written book with an intriguing and twisted plot that wraps up seamlessly in the end.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another Excellent Book by Paul! By Amazon Customer Another excellent book by Paul Boynton. The idea of doing a very small step toward my weight goal helps me to not expect overnight results. All his books have resulted in positive changes for me.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful tool to help you become healthier and happier. By CRD I have been waiting for Paul Boynton to come out with this book. Paul Boynton and Begin with Yes have been guiding and motivating me forward one step at a time toward fulfilling my life's purpose since 2009, from a yoga studio owner to a founder of a nonprofit. The nonprofit helps cancer survivors redesign a healthy and happy life after treatment (feel inspired, release stress, eat healthy, exercise). In developing the after-care program, I wished Paul had a book with the same motivation, guidance, and inspired action as his other books, as it would be a great resource to use in the program to assist survivors with making necessary lifestyle changes. And now here it is! This book is another short read with easy-to-accomplish exercises and lots of motivation to help anyone achieve their health and life goals one small step at a time for sustainability.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great book! By Carol J. Ewer All of his books are so helpful. Finally a book on commitment that I can relate to at a deeper level!
