1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.

Set in Burma during the British invasion of 1885, this masterly novel tells the story of Rajkumar, a poor boy lifted on the tides of political and social chaos, who goes on to create an empire in the Burmese teak forest. When soldiers force the royal family out of the Glass Palace and into exile, Rajkumar befriends Dolly, a young woman in the court of the Burmese Queen, whose love will shape his life. He cannot forget her, and years later, as a rich man, he goes in search of her. The struggles that have made Burma, India, and Malaya the places they are today are illuminated in this wonderful novel by the writer Chitra Divakaruni calls “a master storyteller.”

“I will never forget the young and old Rajkumar, Dolly, the Princesses, the forests of teak, the wealth that made families and wars. A wonderful novel. An incredible story.” ―Grace Paley

“A rich, layered epic that probes the meaning of identity and homeland―a literary territory that is as resonant now, in our globalized culture, as it was when the sun never set on the British Empire.” ―Los Angeles Times Book Review

“A novelist of dazzling ingenuity.” ―San Francisco Chronicle

The Glass Palace, by Amitav Ghosh

From Publishers Weekly Ghosh's epic novel of Burma and Malaya over a span of 115 years is the kind of "sweep of history" that readers can appreciateDeven loveDdespite its demands. There is almost too much here for one book, as over the years the lives and deaths of principal characters go flying by. Yet Ghosh (The Calcutta Chromosome; Shadow Lines) is a beguiling and endlessly resourceful storyteller, and he boasts one of the most arresting openings in recent fiction: in the marketplace of Mandalay, only the 11-year-old Indian boy Rajkumar recognizes the booming sounds beyond the curve of the river as English cannon fire. The year is 1885, and the British have used a trade dispute to justify the invasion and seizure of Burma's capital. As a crowd of looters pours into the fabled Glass Palace, the dazzling throne room of the nine-roofed golden spire that was the great hti of Burma's kings, Rajkumar catches sight of Dolly, then only 10, nursemaid to the Second Princess. Rajkumar carries the memory of their brief meeting through the years to come, while he rises to fame and riches in the teak trade and Dolly travels into exile to India with King Thebaw, Burma's last king; Queen Supayalat; and their three daughters. The story of the exiled king and his family in Ratnagiri, a sleepy port town south of Bombay, is worth a novel in itself, and the first two of the story's seven parts, which relate that history and Rajkumar's rise to wealth in Burma's teak forests, are marvelously told. Inspired by tales handed down to him by his father and uncle, Ghosh vividly brings to life the history of Burma and Malaya over a century of momentous change in this teeming, multigenerational saga. (Feb. 6) Forecast: Novels by Indian authors continue to surge in popularity here, and this title not only ranks among the best but differs from the pack for its setting of Burma rather than India. Backed by a 6-city author tour, advance blurbs from Peter Mathiessen and the British reviews of the novel, plus a Fiction at Random promotion, this book should be read widely and with enthusiasm stateside. Rights have been sold in Germany, the U.K., France, Denmark, Holland, Italy, Spain, India and Latin America. Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal In an industry not known for risk-taking, the publisher is to be congratulated for offering Ghosh (The Calcutta Chromosome) a contract on his as-yet-unwritten novel. Set primarily in Burma, Malaya, and India, this work spans from 1885, when the British sent the King of Burma into exile, to the present. While it does offer brief glimpses into the history of the region, it is more the tale of a family and how historical events influenced real lives. As a young boy, Rajkumar, an Indian temporarily stranded in Mandalay, finds himself caught up in the British invasion that led to the exile of Burma's last king. In the chaos, he spies Dolly, a household maid in the royal palace, for whom he develops a consuming passion and whom years later he tracks down in India and marries. As their family grows and their lives intersect with others, the tangled web of local and international politics is brought to bear, changing lives as well as nations. Ghosh ranges from the condescension of the British colonialists to the repression of the current Myanmar (Burmese) regime in a style that suggests E.M. Forster as well as James Michener. Highly recommended, especially for public libraries.-DDavid W. Henderson, Eckerd Coll. Lib., St. Petersburg, FL Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From The New Yorker This sprawling narrative, inspired by stories passed down in the author's family, stretches from the British invasion of Burma, in 1885, through the country's independence, to the uneasy military rule of the present day. The novel is presided over by the Indian-born Rajkumar, a poor orphan, who falls for Dolly, a servant of the exiled queen. Ghosh renders the polite imprisonment of the Burmese royal family in India and the lush, dangerous atmosphere of teak camps in the Burmese forest with fine detail–– a perfect balance for the broad strokes of romance and serendipity that drive the story forward. The book's memorial power is so strong that, near the end, when Rajkumar, an old man, reflects, "Ah, Burma––now Burma was a golden land," the reader catches himself nodding in recognition of what was lost. The Story of the Indian Diaspora in the East By Samit Ghosh Amitava Ghosh is an outstanding member of the new genre of writers of Indian literature in English. His niche is combining history with fiction. In his previous books he focused on India's longstanding ties with Arabia. In the Glass Palace he moves to the East: Bangladesh, Myanmar, Malaysia & Singapore. Through his story he highlights a number of important but neglected historical issues: slavery in the East - poor Indians shipped to plantations in the Far East; racism in the British Indian Army & the moral dilemma of Indian soldiers confronted with the Indian National Army fighting for India's freedom; treatment of the Burmese royalty when they came in the way of the English colonial trade in teak; and finally the enterprise of the businessmen of the Indian Diaspora. All through these events, he creates wonderful characters that we can feel and touch. The story line starts at a gentle pace but in the end is gripping, and the book is difficult to put down. It is also laced with erotica ala Indian style for the first time in his books. The only problem is the Indian publisher printed so few copies of the first edition that bookshops were out of stock before the reviews could hit the press.

50 of 51 people found the following review helpful. 3 Stars with an extra star for satisfaction and texture By frumiousb I have the feeling that _The Glass Palace_ is in some ways a better history book than novel. It is nearly impossible not to admire it as an achievement-- the richness of the detail is astonishing as is the mood that the detail manages to create. We follow a family through three generations as they try to negotiate identity in both the colonial and post-colonial worlds.Unfortunately, the structure and characterization in the novel do not live up to the quality of the historic and atmospheric detail. The book follows a fairly standard rags-to-riches story format, and in many cases the characters lack the complexity that Ghosh is able to bring to the surrounding environment. It's a disappointing lack in an otherwise stunning work. It's worth saying as well that I found _The Glass Palace_ an incredibly *satisfying* read. I literally had a really hard time putting it down, and kept it in my purse to read on my lunch breaks and while waiting in lines. I suppose that's a fairly high recommendation in and of itself.

32 of 34 people found the following review helpful. History was never made so beautiful By Manojendu Choudhury Writing a semi-fiction, rather, a piece of literature whose many characters and incidences are by no means fictitious, is an arduous task, but Ghosh manages to accomplish it with a rare aplomb. Technically Ghosh is superb, painting a vivid picture of the period and the different cultures (Burmese and Bengali in particular) and their evolution. He maintains a delicate balance between the evolution of the historical, 'non-fictitious', characters and events and those which are the produce of his imaginations. I can't help admiring Ghosh for his ability to create characters who seem so so real that makes me feel as if I have personal acquintance with them, and this feat he manages to achieve in all his books, The Circle of Reasons, The Shadow Lines (my eternal favourite) and also Calcutta Chromosomes. I had picked up this book with apprehension that he won't be able to live up to the promise that he has created himself through his previous works, but by the time I reached halfway I realised that my apprehensions were grossly misplaced. Each character is subtly crafted out in detail and their evolution couldn't be more natural. It's definitely a very good read.

I am a collector. Not of material things, but of stories. All my life I have heard and stored stories in my head. When I was just a child, I tried to make sense of things that happened. For example, it was easy to explain why it rained and why thunder occurred. I knew the answer. It must be God watering his yard and some of the water splashed out and down on us. After he watered the lawn, he and his friends would play croquet and as the giant balls collided, it made what we heard as thunder. That was my story and I eagerly shared it with all the boys and girls in my neighborhood. Life was much easier then and could be explained. Things I couldn’t understand, I stored away. As I grew, it became harder and harder to explain the things that happened and I couldn’t figure out all the reasons. But I watched the results. I saved them in the folds of memories, waiting until I had more information. Now, as an adult, I recorded them into Puffs of Smoke; little stories about lives that have stayed with me for years. Some, I never solved or figured out the reasons they happened. I am still trying to understand these events and the people who were involved. By inventing words to describe them, it is my intent to give some clarity to the motivations of the actors. Some stories are funny; others are dark, just like life. Most are a little of both. I hope you enjoy them.

I admire how Maria introduces us to all her characters and how she relates their pleasant and unpleasant tales in a clear, uncluttered tone. Certainly, Maria herself is present in some of the stories and, over many years, was part of or told about the others, which she conveys to us for our enjoyment. It is up to us to decide how these rich, colorful folk cope with their lives and often tragic experiences. We smile, we sympathize but wish for more – longer stories, more than just the puffs of smoke. I’ve read these stories twice so far and am sure to do so again.

The author has a nice, folksy way of opening a viewing window into each of her characters' lives. In some strange way, I get the feeling that she lived each of these short stories. At the end of each chapter, I was left with the feeling of "Oh no! Is that all?" The stories have a little mysterious ring to them...some morbid, some intriguing. You will enjoy reading Puffs of Smoke and the author's easy reading style. My only admonition to Maria is: Write an entire novel based on one of these vignettes. Nice job!

Some of the stories definitely make you wish for more so you can learn more about the characters that inhabit these "puffs of smoke". The situations they describe open, but a small window into a life. Maria Ruiz is adept at hinting with straightforward language at depths of emotion that remain just below the surface. Some of the stories definitely linger.

Bouncing Forward: Transforming Bad Breaks into Breakthroughs, by Michaela Haas PhD

Review "Michaela Haas' latest book Bouncing Forward breaks through our great confusion around how to be happy. Full of goodness, this book shares stories, including her own, of people who have suffered in many ways and come through it into strength and love. Introduction

Crisis as a launching pad for growth Only in darkness can you see the stars. —MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. The sucker that took me out does not even have a name: a teeny, untraceable virus. And yet, the invisible culprit ambushed and flattened me, whisking me away to a new benchmark of low. I was in my twenties and had taken a sabbatical from my hectic job as a reporter to embark on a PhD and study the wise minds of the Tibetan yogis I was becoming fond of. Traveling solo through Asia was part of my grand adventure, my express ticket to Cloud Nine. But after two semesters at preeminent Buddhist colleges in North India and Nepal, I crashed. Completely. The first blow was a fever so high and numbing that I was unable to leave my bed for two weeks. A cough and dizziness kept shaking me after the fever subsided. Then severe food poisoning gutted me. Some of the bowls of noodle soup the Tibetan grandmothers prepared in the tiny wood shacks must have contained unfiltered water, boiling with dye from the nearby carpet factories that let their toxic waste stream freely into the groundwater. The Nepalese doctors prescribed antibiotics in megadoses, three different kinds of pills so enormous I could hardly swallow them whole. They only aggravated the nausea. I am persistent, though, so I refused to give up on my quest to understand this intriguing culture and motored on. I kept breathing the diesel-filled air, feasting on the spicy chili in the cheap guesthouses, diving into the wondrous world of meditation and mantras. Until a few months later, when I reached a dead end. No matter how much I pushed, my body just wouldn’t obey. Struck by a crippling fatigue, I returned to the French countryside where my spouse lived at the time, hoping the care of friends and Western doctors would build me back up. I thought of myself as resilient and resourceful. As a TV presenter I had hosted live talk shows in large arenas and thoroughly enjoyed the adrenaline of unpredictable situations; as a reporter I loved researching tricky assignments and was used to pursuing questions until getting answers. I would figure this out, too. But the local doctors were baffled and unable to offer a cure. The diseases they tested me for escalated in scare factor—HIV? Multiple sclerosis? Brain tumor? I grew increasingly weak, because I could hardly keep any food down. Simple tasks I’d taken for granted—such as a quick dash to the supermarket—became as daunting as my ascent toward the base camp of Mount Everest just a few months before. On some days I couldn’t form a coherent sentence nor remember the names of my closest friends. At first, everybody was very sympathetic, but when the illness dragged on for weeks and months and then for the better part of a year, most of my friends bolted, including my spouse. I watched my whole life wash away from me—my health, my career, my joy, and eventually my friendships, my marriage, and my old self as I knew it. Everything tumbled down a steep ravine. Compared to the massive tragedies I’d witnessed as a reporter in emergency rooms and poverty-stricken countries, my suffering seemed trivial, especially since I had just spent months with Tibetan refugees who had lost everything—their homeland, their families, their health—and yet they managed to navigate their life in exile with a cheerfulness and compassion I deeply admired. I felt like my pain had no right to be so devastating, but I was overwhelmed by riptides of hopelessness that swept me away. Ever since I watched my grandfather succeed as a businessman and father of five despite his crippling injury from polio, I’d wondered: how is it possible that some people emerge from pain fortified? Throughout my decades as a reporter, when I interviewed tsunami victims and torture survivors, these questions tugged at me: Why do some people fall apart in a crisis while others not only survive, but thrive? What makes the difference? When I was down for the count, this quandary became deeply personal. How could I glue the smithereens of my life back together and become whole again? Had my resilience just been a mirage? Going beyond what the naysayers say Resilience is such a catchy concept. Estée Lauder sells “Resilience Lift Extreme” makeup, retailers market Resilience Shampoo, and Hanes produced Resilience pantyhose.1 While I’d been pummeled by the virus, I wished getting in resilient shape was as easy as putting on the right pantyhose! re·sil·ience : the ability to become strong, healthy, or successful again after something bad happens. : the ability of something to return to its original shape after it has been pulled, stretched, pressed, bent, etc.2 The everyday definition of resilience entails a sense of bouncing back from a severe crisis, but for me, the idea that we can “bounce back” from a devastating blow and “return to our original shape” falls short. We never forget the ones we’ve lost or the arduous struggles we’ve fought. The lives we lead are markedly different before and after a trauma, because these losses and struggles transform and profoundly change us. This book is not about bouncing back, but rather about bouncing forward. About letting the fire of trauma temper and teach us. The title is a nod to Dr. Maya Angelou’s definition of rising above hardship: “It’s also a bouncing forward, going beyond what the naysayers said.”3 Most people have heard of posttraumatic stress. Yet, beyond the medical community, few are aware of the evidence of posttraumatic growth. It may seem paradoxical to even put the words “trauma” and “growth” next to each other in one sentence. And yet, survivors and experts begin to focus increasingly on the possibility that we could use both the descent and the lessons we learn from climbing out of the ditch for a greater good in our own life and to help others. The US Army, for instance, has updated their definition of resilience to include “the mental, physical, emotional, and behavioral ability to face and cope with adversity, adapt to change, recover, learn and grow from setbacks.”4 According to Richard Tedeschi, posttraumatic growth’s leading researcher, as many as 90 percent of survivors report at least one aspect of posttraumatic growth, such as a renewed appreciation for life or a deeper connection to their heart’s purpose. This does not happen immediately or easily, and rarely by itself. We need to actively work toward positive change, and we need the right tools and support in order to transform a bad break into a breakthrough. The groundbreaking science of posttraumatic growth is still new, ever expanding and adding fresh insights. Psychologist Stephen Joseph is not the only one to regard it as “one of the most exciting of all the recent advances in clinical psychology, because it promises to radically alter our ideas about trauma—especially the notion that trauma inevitably leads to a damaged and dysfunctional life.”5 A crisis is not a cul-de-sac, but rather a watershed moment. What we do next matters: advance or retreat, take a turn south or north, run or hide, crawl or fly. We can avert our eyes or dig deeper, try harder or grow softer, close down or break open. Cracking the resilience code After my own crisis, I never gained my health back fully, and my life has not been the same since. My body is an unstable companion that regularly gives out on me. My physical immune system has gone haywire, some of it beyond repair. Instead I have had to go deeper to find strategies that will strengthen the immune system of my soul. The fundamental question is not whether we encounter suffering—because we all do. “It is how we work with suffering so that it leads to awakening the heart and going beyond the habitual views and actions that perpetuate suffering,” Buddhist teacher Pema Chödrön says. “How do we actually use suffering so that it transforms our being and that of those with who we come in contact? How can we stop running from pain and reacting against it in ways that destroy us as well as others?”6 I didn’t write this book because I have all the answers. I wrote it because I have questions. I set out to ask masters of resilience how they found strength in adversity. By researching their life stories, perhaps a bit of their magic would rub off on me. Did they have a resilience code, and could I crack it? I interviewed civil rights icon Maya Angelou about overcoming her childhood traumas, drummed with Def Leppard star Rick Allen, fed puppies with ex-POW Rhonda Cornum on her farm in Kentucky, visited autistic animal activist Temple Grandin in Colorado, went to my first FanFest with genetic wonder woman Meggie Zahneis, and explored Berlin nightlife with famed jazz guitarist Coco Schumann, who played for his life in Auschwitz. I cheered on paralyzed surfers as they navigated eight-foot waves, learned about the power of bearing witness from Buddhist teacher Roshi Bernie Glassman, and talked with Canadian business consultant Alain Beauregard about his realization that cancer was “the greatest gift” he was ever given. I sat with Tibetan yogis in the Himalayas, attended the US Army’s resilience boot camp, and spoke with pioneers of a burgeoning movement of psychotherapists, scientists, and medical professionals who are trying to pinpoint what exactly it is that makes some people grow in the midst of adversity. It is at this interface of Western psychology, Asian wisdom, and army toughness that our journey begins. We will look at crisis from different angles: physical, mental, emotional, psychological, and spiritual. You will meet people who have approached pain from seemingly opposite perspectives—hard-bitten soldiers, soft-spoken Zen masters, creative entertainers—and yet their best strategies to tackle these pains turn out to be surprisingly similar. My interviewees are role models for people everywhere who are exploring their life purpose while facing challenges. One of the most insightful ways we can progress is by studying the biographies of people who have mastered the art of bouncing forward. How did they summon such courage? Their world has shattered. Somehow, they survived. Now, what? The phoenix rises from the ashes On her sixteenth birthday, Malala Yousafzai gave her first public speech since being attacked by a masked Taliban gunman who shot her in the shoulder, neck, and skull. In front of five hundred young education activists at the United Nations, Malala renewed her vow to fight for education: “The terrorists thought they would change my aims and stop my ambitions, but nothing changed in my life except this: Weakness, fear, and hopelessness died. Strength, power, and courage were born.” When Nelson Mandela was sworn in as president of post-apartheid South Africa, he invited one of his former prison guards, a man who had helped to keep him incarcerated for twenty-seven years, to witness the oath from the front row. Even while behind bars, Mandela refused to succumb to hate. He truly lived up to the words he wrote his wife Winnie from prison: “Difficulties break some men but make others.”7 Less than a month after a tiger shark bit off her arm while she surfed off the coast of Kauai, thirteen-year-old Bethany Hamilton got back on the board, and today she continues to compete in international surfing with one arm. “You must not let disability take control of your life,” she realized. “Attitude is everything. There are no limits.”8 The phoenix had to go through the fire and be reduced to ashes before he could rise again to new heights. There was a glimmer in the ashes that never ceased, and from this glimmer the mythical bird fanned the fire of life again. This is a book about modern phoenixes, women and men who overcame profound trials: chronic illness, loss, cancer, accidents, war, Auschwitz. They not only rose to these challenges but they also emerged stronger, more determined, and wiser. My hope is that these stories will resonate with fibers in your own being, and will energize and enliven you just like they have inspired me. We are stronger than we think Few of us will be attacked by a shark or targeted by the Taliban, but we all face profound tests. Pain comes in all patterns and proportions, stitched together in a patchwork quilt with pleasure and joy that threads through our lives. There are the lowercase pains: the unpaid bills, the cancer scare, the worry about Johnny being bullied in school. And then there are the uppercase pains that crank up the volume until we whimper, our fist raised at life, “Why are you doing this to me?!?” At first, I had suspected that just a few superhuman outliers, the likes of Malala and Mandela, managed to turn trials into triumphs. Though they surely exceed in courage and wisdom, they are not made of a different fabric than you and me. While caring for the very real pain of survivors who suffer from posttraumatic stress, trauma therapists tell us that most people will survive painful life events, loss, and accidents with few detectable long-term consequences. None of us floats through life on a cloud, without experiencing the loss of a loved one, without grave illness, without at least one or possibly several life-threatening events. It is normal that we struggle with what life throws at us. We’re not alone in this. When doctors and psychiatrists research loss, grief, or trauma, by default they often pay more attention to the patients who suffer the most. However, the majority of trauma survivors eventually attest to a renewed zest for life, major empathetic growth, and increased emotional maturity not despite, but because of their painful experiences and sometimes simultaneously with posttraumatic stress. We are so vulnerable, yet tenacious at the same time. As Paralympic sprinter and double amputee Aimee Mullins says: “People have continually wanted to talk to me about overcoming adversity, and I’m going to make an admission: this phrase never sat right with me. . . . Implicit in this phrase of ‘overcoming adversity’ is the idea that success, or happiness, is about emerging on the other side of a challenging experience unscathed or unmarked by the experience, as if my successes in life have come about from an ability to sidestep or circumnavigate the presumed pitfalls of a life with prosthetics, or what other people perceive as my disability. But, in fact, we are changed. We are marked, of course, by a challenge, whether physically, emotionally, or both. And I’m going to suggest that this is a good thing. Adversity isn’t an obstacle that we need to get around in order to resume living our life. It’s part of our life. And I tend to think of it like my shadow. Sometimes I see a lot of it, sometimes there’s very little, but it’s always with me. . . . There is adversity and challenge in life, and it’s all very real and relative to every single person, but the question isn’t whether or not you’re going to meet adversity, but how you’re going to meet it. So, our responsibility is not simply shielding those we care for from adversity, but preparing them to meet it well.”9 This is the focus of Bouncing Forward: to open our eyes to possibilities. My hope is that this book will offer you a new perspective on pain. A new meaning of life. A renewed sense of optimism. Because a resilient mindset not only fortifies us in challenging times, but the same qualities and skills help us in our everyday lives as well. In fact, ideally we cultivate resilience while the proverbial waters are smooth so that we have a buffer and good sailing skills when the going gets rough. Researching these life stories has a goal: to find out what protects us and those around us from unnecessary suffering; to discover strategies to intervene when life’s trajectory goes ballistic; and to help the healing. And not only to heal but also to use the crisis as a launching pad for a new beginning. “My life is my message,” Gandhi said. The life stories assembled here send a strong message: don’t give up! Over the following chapters, we will explore some of the skills we need to face life’s perils and pitfalls. Our upbringing plays a role, and so do genetic factors, resources, social skills, and our purpose in life. Some of these factors are beyond our control. We cannot control the tides of life, terrorist attacks, drunk drivers, or the upstairs neighbor cranking up the volume of Metallica, but we have control over the most important ingredient: our mind. Many think of resilience as a kind of Teflon quality, an impenetrable armor that magically wards off pain and suffering. Most likely, this magic potion exists only in Hollywood and hairspray ads. The mavens of posttraumatic growth tell a different story: that resilience is a matter of small steps, of inching forward one breath at a time. Only after they embraced their suffering and after they let it penetrate them to the core did things change. As we will see, posttraumatic growth is quite the opposite of Rambo’s grin-and-bear-it bravado. In fact, the lone cowboy who thinks asking for help is a weakness is the one most at risk. Covering up a scar with a smiley-face Band-Aid does not lessen the pain either. Growth arises, quite to the contrary, from acknowledging our wounds and allowing ourselves to be vulnerable. This might include recognizing the traumas we have created ourselves. Think of it as a grand experiment: what would happen if we opened up instead of closing down, if we let the pain in rather than warding it off? Father Thomas Merton writes: “Indeed, the truth that many people never understand, until it is too late, is that the more you try to avoid suffering, the more you suffer, because smaller and more insignificant things begin to torture you, in proportion to your fear of being hurt. The one who does most to avoid suffering is, in the end, the one who suffers the most, and his suffering comes to him from things so little and so trivial that one can say that it is no longer objective at all. It is his own existence, his own being, that is at once the subject and the source of his pain, and his very existence and consciousness is his greatest torture.”10 Acceptance, openness, flexibility, optimism, patience, mindfulness, empathy, compassion, resourcefulness, determination, courage, and forgiveness are all part of a resilient mindset. These are qualities we can train in. Maybe there is a “resilience makeup” after all. We just can’t buy it in a store.

Dr. Michaela Haas' BOUNCING FORWARD reminds us that every situation gives us the opportunity to grow By Cyrus Webb Though we might not remember it all the time, each of us know what it's like to be misunderstood, judged, broken or tested. What matters, however, is what we do after the experience. In BOUNCING FORWARD Dr. Michaela Haas discusses her own journey and that of others in a way that reminds us that we are all united in this experience called life. It might look different for others, but if we are open to learning and growing we can definitely become better and do better regardless of what our past might have included.I love the reminders of being present and not forgetting to be grateful for what we have. If we can learn that simple yet powerful thing that will help us to look at life's challenging situations differently and maybe realize that what we've been through will make us better equipped for what is ahead. The other great thing I gleaned from this book is that our experiences can help us to help others. That is definitely not something we think about that often, but instead of asking "Why me?" we might be able to realize that it's happening to us to be an example for others as to what they can learn and breakthrough. In the end for me BOUNCING FORWARD is about hope, that no matter what we have seen or experienced we can come out the other side stronger and ready for the journey ahead. If you can get that and walk in that truth then every experience will be just another lesson for us to learn from and to share.

By Summers McKay I have always been interested in the idea of post traumatic growth and the way that some people are able to launch into greatness following terrible events. As someone who has long been told "Gosh, you make the best of things." and have been given such support for being the one who could turn a bad thing into a good experience, I wondered what it was that makes me tick and more importantly how and why I also struggle with depression amidst my authentic enthusiastic optimism. This book uncovers some of the most interesting and compelling stories of people who have intentionally - or unintentionally made the best of things and advanced life after change.I have often been asked why I choose to do the hardest things, marathons, triathlons, mountain climbing, be an entrepreneur and loving with my whole heart even though in the past it has led to tremendous heart break. I realized it is because bad breaks do compel breakthroughs, creative success, authentic expression and realignment of passion. This book explores these themes as well as the experiences of both highs and lows during the process. Bouncing Forward helps us all understand how we can grow. I heartily recommend it! Enjoy!

Thank you Michaela Haas for bringing awareness to this important subject. I am so happy & hopeful that meditation and reaching out is now recognized & encouraged in the military! Most of us, military or not, will experience some level of trauma and loss during our lifetime, and by interviewing these people Haas has given us examples of healing through Bouncing Forward. A wonderfully written and researched book, with good & interesting documentation. I enjoyed the personal stories and facts in this wonderful book and would recommend it to anyone, it's the kind of inspiring book that everyone should read.

From a captivating new author come twelve piercing stories, in which young women negotiate friendship and marriage, art and commerce, and the possibility their lives might not work out as planned. After the house of the young couple in “A Cane, an Anchor” goes up in flames, they’re unsure of what they lost in the fire and what they’d lost long before it. “The Living” asks, how would you arrange your life if you had only six months left? In “Youse,” two teenage girls are the targets of an attempted kidnapping. A trio of linked stories—including the title track—follows Meg and Dax, a curator and a butcher who married impulsively, from their eerie honeymoon in rural Wales through Meg’s identity crisis when the museum where she works is destroyed, to early parenthood, when a coyote’s spectral presence at their child’s birthday party in a Brooklyn park suggests deeper threats.

Speed Dreaming: Stories, by Nicole Haroutunian

Review

“A bowler hat, a volleyball net, a pig tattoo: Nicole Haroutunian’s stories all have unexpected details that attract the eye and alert the mind. Those details glitter on the surface while something else entirely goes on underneath: dark tides of life, death, illness, and love, and people who are carried away by them during the course of otherwise normal lives.” —Ben Greenman, author of The Slippage and Mo Meta Blues

“Nicole Haroutunian is a master of excavating what is ominous and therefore worthy of examination in our everyday lives—sleepover games, damaged bodies, dying cities, Brooklyn parrots, and the prosaic catastrophes of love. I loved reading these perfectly formed stories about thoughtful urbanites and their search for meaning in the mundane.” —Amy Shearn, author of The Mermaid of Brooklyn and How Far Is The Ocean from Here

“Haroutunian’s breezy prose, and her characters’ humor and relatability—even when dealing with a recently-paralyzed boyfriend, a rocky new marriage, or a father’s recent death—makes reading this captivating collection a true joy.” —Bustle, Best Books of March

“Speed Dreaming is a book spilling over with talent. How enticing and accurately drawn these stories are, with their bright touches and ominous edges, their smart young characters blocked by what they can’t see yet. A wonderful debut.” —Joan Silber, author of Fools and Ideas of Heaven

“An unforgettable portrait of what it's like to be a young woman in contemporary America...A beautiful, funny, and unflinching collection.” —Saïd Sayrafiezadeh, author of Brief Encounters With the Enemy

“The characters who appear (and reappear) in Speed Dreaming are full of intelligence, wit, and empathy—as well as regret, fickleness, and occasional selfishness. In other words, they are wholly human. With unbelievable precision and grace, Nicole Haroutunian examines the exquisite, transcendent, and inexplicably eerie moments of her characters’ everyday lives and gives meaning to the smallest details of their worlds. Speed Dreaming is unforgettable.” —Nelly Reifler, author of Elect H. Mouse State Judge

“Nicole Haroutunian's stories are precise little gems. I know I'll return to them again and again, since there's something new and beautiful to find in them every time I open this collection.” —Lauren Grodstein, author of The Explanation for Everything

“These passionate stories of women and their half disasters, half-rotten men, and fully open hearts are written so nimbly and with such energy and momentum and compassion that I found myself carrying the book from room to room, brushing my teeth and feeding the dog while reading, unwilling to put them down.” —Deb Olin Unferth, author of Revolution: The Year I Fell in Love and Went to Join the War

“Fire, accidents, mysterious disease, and a coyote at a child’s birthday party are only some of the calamities that these protagonists must confront, along with the minor indignities and incongruities of romance and work. Haroutunian brings her complicated young women to life with utter literary confidence. A splendid debut.” —Melvin Jules Bukiet, author of Undertown and A Faker’s Dozen

“These honest and perceptive stories contend with the painful contradictions of modern love; that it is precious as it is quotidian; inadequate as it is essential.” —Julie Sarkissian, author of Dear Lucy

“Though the stories in Nicole Haroutunian's debut collection are entirely fictional, things still get too real: friendships are pitted against marriages, a couple's belongings disappear in a fire, an end date is placed on a life, and two young girls face an imminent kidnapping. Urgent and frantic, there's plenty more speed within the pages of this book.” —Refinery29

“Haroutunian is smart about contemporary relationships, and her collection will certainly resonate with the Modern Love crowd. Her protagonists, all women, admit to melodrama, but they go one step further than the characters in Girls in that they question what’s behind their woe-is-me antics. —The Paris Review Blog, Staff Pick

Beautifully crafted stories with a voice that reaches the reader. The author creates these moments in each story-- the kind that make you want to highlight it and remember it for later because it works in the story and maybe it can stand on its own as well. My favorite stories are "Youse," "Meta-Wall," and "Speed Dreaming," but there wasn't one that I didn't like. I plan to read this one again, so I may add a few to that list! Looking forward to seeing what this author writes next. Read it!!!

A fascinating short collection of tales By Emily Weil A fascinating short collection of tales touching on such diverse topics as love, hate, loss, birth, death, sickness, hope and ranging in emotion from tears to fear to joy. The stories "Youse"," A Cane, An Anchor", "Local News" and "Poughkeepsie" are some of the stories that stayed with me long after the book was done.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic debut. In two words: "Accelerated sleep-walking" By Samuel There is a quick-paced yet somnambular feel to Nicole Haroutunian’s short-story collection aptly titled, 'Speed Dreaming'. Readers will find: Thematic mirrors, social acuity, masterful pacing, and most of all, an overall nonchalance whether they likes any of the characters. The noticeable imperfections of each character – the recklessness of a moribund girl in Manhattan, a couple’s difficulty with gratitude in the midst of loss, the insecure seeking affection from those whom seldom reciprocate love – render them each more human-like, easier to sympathize with. But pity for the tribulations they struggle through doesn’t seem to be the driving factor of 'Speed Dreaming'.The spinal cord of this collection – subtle as it may be – seems to be a focus on the abstract but permanent qualities of the individual. We appreciate this permanence even greater when we gaze at the evanescent settings Nicole chooses – burnt-down houses, closing museums, ancient ruins, abandoned factories, and terminating school programs. The result: a detailed mosaic of relatable cyphers trudging swiftly through a world of general deterioration that, if we can be honest, resembles our world a bit too closely.I look forward to reading Nicole's next work.

Best Ebook Seven Men: And the Secret of Their Greatness, by Eric Metaxas

In Seven Men, New York Times best-selling author Eric Metaxas presents seven exquisitely crafted short portraits of widely known—but not well understood—Christian men, each of whom uniquely showcases a commitment to live by certain virtues in the truth of the gospel.

Written in a beautiful and engaging style, Seven Men addresses what it means (or should mean) to be a man today, at a time when media and popular culture present images of masculinity that are not the picture presented in Scripture and historic civil life. What does it take to be a true exemplar as a father, brother, husband, leader, coach, counselor, change agent, and wise man? What does it mean to stand for honesty, courage, and charity, especially at times when the culture and the world run counter to those values?

Each of the seven biographies represents the life of a man who experienced the struggles and challenges to be strong in the face of forces and circumstances that would have destroyed the resolve of lesser men. Each of the seven men profiled—George Washington, William Wilberforce, Eric Liddell, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Jackie Robinson, John Paul II, and Charles Colson—call the reader to a more elevated walk and lifestyle, one that embodies the gospel in the world around us.

Seven great biographies for those with a Twitteresque attention span By Steve I first saw Eric Metaxas when I attended a Socrates in the City event in Manhattan, and I became a big fan. From the first time I heard him speak, I knew he had a kind of style that someone who grew up in the New York area--a style that was sometimes poignant, sometimes deep, sometimes inspiring, sometimes sarcastic, sometimes downright silly. but always authentic and genuine.I read his book on William Wilberforce cover-to-cover. I've heard amazing things about his book on Dietrich Bonhoeffer, but unfortunately I haven't gotten a chance to finish it yet, as it's the kind of book you really need to read without much interruption, and that kind of time is kind of hard to find in my life these days. And admittedly, my attention span is more of the Twitter variety than the War and Peace variety, so I really need to get myself in the mood to read a 600 page book, no matter how well-written it might be.Enter Seven Men and the Secret of Their Greatness. This was the perfect book for me. Instead of being one long book, it's like getting seven mini-books in one; I could finish one of the "mini-books" in just a few sessions of my morning commute (and admittedly, at times the content was so compelling I snuck in some pages after I got to the office). The book is broken into seven sections, each focusing on a mini-biography of a different man. The men are George Washington, William Wilberforce, Eric Liddell, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Jackie Robinson, Pope John Paul II, and Chuck Colson.I admit that I've gotten awful tired of reading contemporary biographies. Today's historians have gotten as secular and politically correct as the rest of the world, and it's painfully clear that, intentionally or not, they inject their biases into their work. In one of the supposed "great" recent biographies of George Washington, for example, extensive numbers of pages felt like they were taken out of today's tabloids: how many women did Washington have affairs with? What drove his ambitions? What did he do to achieve greatness? It might as well have been a biography about Denzel Washington. In so many contemporary biographies of men of greatness, there's one thing clearly missing: God. I won't attribute this to some grand conspiracy; but it is just a sign of the times where the mere mention of religion can set off all kinds of political correctness bells and can instantly discredit a historian who wishes to be respected in academia. What I love about this book is that not only does it *not* leave out descriptions of each of these men's faith in God nor relegate it to a few lines; it provides a clear and objective case that faith played an active role in these men's lives, not only in helping them achieve great things, but also in helping them maintain perspective and humility after they achieved it. And it does this without proselytizing or being "preachy". It just tells the men's stories, objectively and honesty and, for once, completely. What I love about what Metaxas did here was that these aren't mere "Cliff's Notes" versions of each man's biography. Instead, Metaxas focuses on moments in each man's life that tell you about his character, moments that a lot of history books tend to gloss over as a footnote. Most of us know, for example, that George Washington declined to serve a third term. But did you know that he went out of his way to end what might have been a rebellion from the Army of the nascent United States after being mistreated by politicians in the early Congress? Most of us know the story of Eric Liddell that was told in the movie "Chariots of Fire", but did you know about what happened afterwards, and how he gave his life to be a missionary to China? In a lot of ways, I see this book almost as a "sequel" to Hebrews chapter 11. Yes, we can admire these men for the great things they achieved from a historical perspective. But this book gives us insight into the faith and the principles that helped them achieve them. And in a world where young people more or more see their "heroes" as those celebrities who make the most money, or business leaders who make the most money, or reality TV stars who make the most money, or sports figures who make the most money--this book should be required reading for everyone.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com® book review bloggers program. Author Eric Metaxas seems to think so because manhood is the theme of his latest book, Seven Men: And the secret of their greatness. In this encouraging and well written book, he seeks to answer two questions: What is a man? and What makes a man great? What sets this book apart is that the author doesn't talk about manhood. Instead, he shows what manhood looks like in the lives of great men. As he explains, "Seeing and studying the actual lives of people is simply the best way to communicate ideas about how to behave and how not to behave."Metaxas believes that one of the primary characteristics of authentic manhood is someone who sacrifices himself for those he loves. As the author says, "That's a picture of real fatherhood and real manhood." The author picked seven men who he believes exemplifies these characteristics. After reading the book, I concur with his assessment.George Washington could have become the first king of America. Instead, he gave up real power for the sake of his new nation. William Wilberforce gave up the chance to become prime minister of England. Instead, he spent his life working to repeal slavery. Eric Liddell gave up the opportunity to win an Olympic gold medal in the one event in which he was most likely to win it. Yet he is better known for his sacrifice than for winning a race. Dietrich Bonhoeffer courageously defied the Nazis and surrendered his freedom and safety time and time again. In giving up his life, he inspired countless people to do the right thing in thousands of situations. Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in professional baseball. But he had to surrender something very few men would have the strength to surrender--the right to fight back against injustice. Karol Wojtyla, Pope John Paul II, surrendered his whole life to God and served as a priest. Chuck Colson pled guilty to a crime when he didn't have to--and went to prison as a result. Yet it was there he discovered he was truly free. The brief biographies of these men are well written and inspiring. They whet one's appetite for a longer book on each person. The book would be a great gift for a high school or college graduate and would hopefully inspire a young man to pursue greatness through sacrifice and service. I hope this becomes a series and we see another volume soon.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze®.com [...] book review bloggers program.
