I am a collector. Not of material things, but of stories. All my life I have heard and stored stories in my head. When I was just a child, I tried to make sense of things that happened. For example, it was easy to explain why it rained and why thunder occurred. I knew the answer. It must be God watering his yard and some of the water splashed out and down on us. After he watered the lawn, he and his friends would play croquet and as the giant balls collided, it made what we heard as thunder. That was my story and I eagerly shared it with all the boys and girls in my neighborhood. Life was much easier then and could be explained. Things I couldn’t understand, I stored away. As I grew, it became harder and harder to explain the things that happened and I couldn’t figure out all the reasons. But I watched the results. I saved them in the folds of memories, waiting until I had more information. Now, as an adult, I recorded them into Puffs of Smoke; little stories about lives that have stayed with me for years. Some, I never solved or figured out the reasons they happened. I am still trying to understand these events and the people who were involved. By inventing words to describe them, it is my intent to give some clarity to the motivations of the actors. Some stories are funny; others are dark, just like life. Most are a little of both. I hope you enjoy them.

I admire how Maria introduces us to all her characters and how she relates their pleasant and unpleasant tales in a clear, uncluttered tone. Certainly, Maria herself is present in some of the stories and, over many years, was part of or told about the others, which she conveys to us for our enjoyment. It is up to us to decide how these rich, colorful folk cope with their lives and often tragic experiences. We smile, we sympathize but wish for more – longer stories, more than just the puffs of smoke. I’ve read these stories twice so far and am sure to do so again.

The author has a nice, folksy way of opening a viewing window into each of her characters' lives. In some strange way, I get the feeling that she lived each of these short stories.At the end of each chapter, I was left with the feeling of "Oh no! Is that all?" The stories have a little mysterious ring to them...some morbid, some intriguing. You will enjoy reading Puffs of Smoke and the author's easy reading style. My only admonition to Maria is: Write an entire novel based on one of these vignettes. Nice job!

Some of the stories definitely make you wish for more so you can learn more about the characters that inhabit these "puffs of smoke". The situations they describe open, but a small window into a life. Maria Ruiz is adept at hinting with straightforward language at depths of emotion that remain just below the surface. Some of the stories definitely linger.
