His understanding of our bodies metabolism and its natural balance is like that of yoga teaching the importance of breathing to By Tchoup51 Dr. Bert Herring is quietly changing the lives of many people by helping them understand how their bodies relate to and process food. He cuts through all the dieting noise as well as the doing and undoing of weight loss by understanding an essential fact: we maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle by allowing our bodies to metabolize food the way they were meant to do. His understanding of our bodies metabolism and its natural balance is like that of yoga teaching the importance of breathing to well being: his understanding is that profound and life changing.

Five Stars, Incredible and Life Changing By Amazon Customer Absolutely fantastic book for anyone.Dr. Herring is changing lives and truly making a difference. Personally, I have lost 60lbs and have kept it off for 5 years now and have never felt better. Best yet, I'm still eating the food I love. However, intermittent fasting has opened me up to enjoy vegetables that once made me gag. A day of fasting makes broccoli taste like a dream.Everyone should read this book and give the advice a solid month (or even longer) a try. It's quite simply the easiest diet to follow, I promise. Stop counting calories and start living your life!

By Amazon Customer I read this book on KindleUnlimited after meeting a number of people who I was surprised to find were following Dr. Herring's practices and getting great results. Its surprisingly readable and I appreciate the focus on behavioral modification rather than willpower to control over-eating.Some of the other reviewers seemed to have missed this point; what I got out of this program's success was not the scientific basis on how fasting affects the body (there are other books that focus on this aspect), but rather on how modifying the timing and frequency of meals causes us to naturally consume fewer calories and feel hungry less often. This is well-understood in psychology and Dr. Herring applies it to great effect in a topic that is often conflated with other "lose weight quick" diet changes, even those with broad scientific support.Great read, highly recommended.

The Power of Surrender: Let Go and Energize Your Relationships, Success, and Well-Being, by Judith Md Orloff

Amazon.com Review Q&A with Dr. Judith Orloff The Ecstasy of Surrender Q&A with Dr. Judith Orloff

Let’s get this out in the open. Your new book is about surrender. A lot of people, especially in the United States, think of surrendering as something negative. We don’t give up! We preserve! We don’t surrender. We fight! What do you mean by surrender and how can it benefit us on a day-to-day basis?

I am so passionate about writing a book about surrender because, as a physician with more than twenty years of medical practice, I’ve seen that it is the missing part of the equation to happiness and health. I’m intrigued with the idea of surrender, not as defeat or loss—as it is frequently thought of—but as a positive, intuitive way of living. Contrary to common stereotypes that equate surrender with weakness, I’m presenting it as a way to gain mastery of your life. People don’t think surrender will work because they fear giving up power. In this book I want readers to experience the elegant balance of knowing when to exert control in their lives and when to let go. This is the secret to success and bliss.

Lots of people strive to keep all aspects of their life in control at all times, but when a crisis hits, such as job loss, relationship difficulties, or problems with a child, they spiral into anxiety or depression. What would be the first thing you would suggest they do to start healing and relieve stress?

The first step to healing is to realize: As much as we might like to control everything, everything cannot always be controlled. Accepting this will lead to inner peace. Of course, it’s natural to feel depressed and anxious when adversity hits, but the art of surrender allows you to exhale instead of clench. It’s important to surrender to the love that is around you for support. Mighty forces can come to your aid when you humbly surrender to life. This doesn’t mean giving up or giving in—it means accepting what is and trying to do your best with as much faith and hope that you can muster. And above all else, shower yourself with compassion. Know that life goes through cycles of change, and you can ride through like a surfer navigating a magnificent wave. Accepting life on life’s terms—learning to flow through joy and adversity—is the gorgeous dance of life.

Over the years you say you have personally learned to trust the process and surrender to those things you resist or fear. What have you learned and gained by surrendering? Are you always successful? What if I try to surrender, do so for a day, but then feel myself creeping back to my old ways? What can I do?

Surrender is my lifelong meditation! It keeps all of us healthy, younger, playful, more passionate, and flexible. I have only touched the surface of surrender. It’s natural to slip back to your old ways of overcontrolling. But be happy with baby steps. In this book I celebrate small changes. Don’t worry if you slip! Just pick yourself up and keep moving! Be grateful that you are making progress at all. Surrender is a journey that continues to awaken you. When I began the holy journey of writing this book, I longed to experience surrender more than anything else. Now, as my writing has concluded, I see how generous this book has been to me, how much I’ve softened and learned to let go. Surrendering has been the catalyst for my growth, even when it was terribly inconvenient and unsettling. This is where faith and trust come in. When you can flow with change, the results are incredible. I am in the midst of radical change—a great blossoming for which I am profoundly grateful.

We live in a fast-paced world and let’s face it: sometimes we get caught up in emotional traffic jams. You say that people can be blocked in different areas of their lives. Relationships. Money. Health. Sexuality. Does the modern world and pace set us up to struggle with letting go? Is there a way to embrace the modern world and the surrender at the same time?

When you choose to practice surrender, you are being a revolutionary, a path forger who is willing to challenge cultural norms. Western culture’s habits of overintellectualizing, overcontrolling, and pushing so hard that you sabotage and exhaust yourself do not work. In this book, I invite you to live life in extraordinary terms and to devote to your practice of letting go. Every moment of life is so precious—the modern world, your inner world, your soul’s journey. In this book, I urge you to surrender to it all. I encourage you to give yourself some time away from mundane reality (even five minutes each day!) so you can replenish your energy and faith and grow stronger. You need to be strong to function in the world. When you can spiritually, emotionally, and physically surrender it takes so much pressure off! And you can feel bliss. Yes, bliss!! Everyone is capable of it if you can surrender to the magnificent mystery of life and to your magnificent self!

This book gives your intellect the information necessary to trust the wisdom of simply letting go.” —Christiane Northrup, MD, author of Womens Bodies, Women’s Wisdom"The Ecstasy of Surrender is a stunning accomplishment. Orloff masterfully explores the multiple facets of letting go and discovering personal and spiritual freedom. This is a wonderful book." —Caroline Myss, author of Anatomy of the Spirit and Defy Gravity"One of the most important changes we can make is to go from seeing surrender as sign of defeat to seeing it as a land of victory inside ourselves. Dr. Judith Orloff offers beautiful guidance and insight into making the switch. This book takes you straight into the light: our surrender to a intelligence, power, and love that is greater than our own. Dr. Orloff nails it. " —Marianne Williamson, author of A Return to Love "Dr. Judith Orloff not only writes eloquently about the beautiful process of surrender, but she demonstrates it through her open-hearted writing. She shows us the strength and power that comes from healthful vulnerability. Judith and her book The Ecstasy of Surrender are treasures!"  —Doreen Virtue, author of The Miracles of Archangel Gabriel"The Ecstasy of Surrender: wow! I surrender to my intuition, to my wisdom, to my inner guru, and to the moment." —Ram Dass, author of Be Here Now"My wise and courageous colleague, Dr. Judith Orloff, has spun a brilliant book--The Ecstasy of Surrender--blending spiritual wisdom, modern medical insights, and Judith's vast intuitional skills. This book will remove blocks to your inner peace, happiness, and health. I highly recommend it." —Brian L. Weiss, MD, author of Many Lives, Many Masters"In this hope-filled offering, Orloff (Emotional Freedom) posits that the only way to live a powerful, successful life is to surrender to it. Blending neuroscience, energy medicine, psychiatry, and the art of intuition, Orloff, an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA, addresses major life issues by breaking them into 12 different “surrenders,” including “redefining true success, power, and happiness”; the “four vital insights into power and letting go”; “cultivating impeccable communication”; and “exploring the divinity of your body and sexuality.” With a compassionate and empowering tone, she counsels others not to micromanage life details, but to be in “flow” with them and to look for the lessons in all situations as well as to refuse to live a life governed by fear. Self-assessment quizzes allow readers to measure their level of involvement in self-defeating behaviors; helpful and non-judgmental suggestions provide strategies for overcoming these negative mind-sets. Orloff demonstrates her own adherence to these principles by unflinchingly sharing her own experiences in the spirit of teaching others." —Publishers Weekly"Stop dreaming about the life you want and start living it. Dr. Orloff explains  a dozen ways in which you can let go of what you don't need so you can let in what you do need to lead a happier, fuller life." —Bella New YorkIn The Ecstasy of Surrender: 12 Ways Letting Go Can Empower Your Life [Dr. Orloff] puts her finger on the number-one behavior that leads to ever-increasing levels of stress in our lives: pushing through, forcing things, and trying to make things happen. This well-written, easy to read, highly practical book will be invaluable for anyone who works too hard, lacks balance, feels unhealthy, is stressed out, has dissatisfying relationships, or just wants to get more joy, pleasure, and spark out of life. —Seattle Post Intelligencer Review"Go with the flow. Forget trying to control every detail. Life is lots more fun and less stressful when you let go from the get-go!" —Good Housekeeping "The Ecstasy of Surrender empowers readers with the art of letting go and the secrets of manifesting power in all areas of life." —Massage and Bodywork Magazine

By Franciska Last week I decided to spring clean, and ever since I've been doing so every day in some way for at least a half hour. I've been revisiting my feng shui, space clearing, and clutter clearing books. When I pre-ordered The Ecstasy of Surrender, I had no idea that I was getting myself another cleaning book. This isn't marketed as a cleaning book, however, it definitely could be. The Ecstasy of Surrender is about cleaning one's soul (or feng shui for the soul as Denise Linn so aptly puts it in her book with the same title). The Ecstasy of Surrender is about the benefits of letting go (exhilaration, empowerment, abundance, etc.). The information is not necessarily new if you've been in some circles, but it definitely is a good interactive guide to study. Dr. Orloff's voice comes through by showing us how to intuitively surrender. Also, she personalizes the topics by putting her stamp on it - quizzes with lists and summaries. A few years ago I had the chance of talking with Dr. Orloff when she was at the Commonwealth Club. This woman is so real (down to earth). She practices what she teaches. She oozes kindness and exudes wisdom. Her warm personality and authenticity shines through in this book.(Revisited) Topics of Interest:The Triune BrainHormones (Adrenaline, Testosterone, Serotonin, etc.)Getting a Sleep DivorceBeing an EmpathListening to One's BodyChakrasMovementDeep BreathingSome Things to Surrender:Old BeliefsSelf-imposed LimitationsMental ChatterPowerlessness for Being EmpoweredLow Self-EsteemAt over 400 pages, this is a guidebook to come back to and marinate in so that the principles can be integrated. She's very comprehensive that you don't need to read her previous books to understand some previously touched upon subjects (such as dealing with passive aggressive, narcissistic, manipulative, or guilt tripping people). Her previous books (Positive Energy & Emotional Freedom Technique) are optional if you want to visit such subjects in detail. This book is an investment in life 101 and is a fun book to study. I wish all of my (text)books were so alive, rich, and useful.Happy studying!

Here's why: Orloff takes a simple if counter-intuitive idea--that you get more out of life by letting go and letting things flow than you do by pushing and trying to control the outcome--and then shows how we can apply the practice of surrender to 12 different areas of life. I especially loved her insights about aging gracefully, healing from a serious illness or injury, changing one's relationship to money, becoming more influential, and improving sex. There are hidden gems all throughout this book--quizzes, exercises, tips, and super-practical strategies. If you're a fast-moving type-A perfectionist like I am, get ready to breathe, slow down, and learn that the universe will provide plenty of answers and gifts for you--if you'll just trust it and stop trying so hard.

Practical tools that you can use right away By David Lewis People tell me I need to relax, so when a friend recommended Judith Orloff's new book to me, I figured I'd give it a read. Could learning to let go help me, I wondered? It already has! I used one of her techniques to resolve a disagreement with my wife, and it worked like a charm! By the way, if you're like me and you want books that have practical tools you can use right away, this one is for you. She's got tips for better sex, better money management, more success in your job, and lots more.

A fun and empowering 6-week program to getting your weight down and energy up by getting sugar savvy and resetting your taste buds and your attitude, from the founder of Energy Up!, High Voltage.Unleash your inner girl power to take control of food so it doesn’t control you. Can’t eat just one? Yeah. There’s a reason for that. New science shows that when we overload on sugar our brain receptors actually change, making it hard to regulate how much we eat. Sugar is addictive. It lights up the same reward receptors and triggers the same cascade of feel-good brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine as cocaine. And when you’re shaky, irritable and looking for your next food “fix,” you may not even realize it—but you’re hooked. Like all of us, you just want to feel good and have energy for all the activities you do and love. But the foods you’re counting on to get you there inevitably make you feel worse…not to mention lead to obesity, heart disease, diabetes, wrinkled skin (truly), and even cancer. Enough! It’s time to take control of your health and happiness. To take control of your weight. To take control of food so it doesn’t control you. To get your energy up in a real, sustainable way. To get Fit, Fabulous, and Fierce. Sugar Savvy is the solution. Based on the groundbreaking “Energy Up” program created by Kathie Dolgin (aka High Voltage), proven in a 2007 Columbia University Medical Center study to help participants lose an average of 13 pounds, the Sugar Savvy solution is more than a diet. It’s an eye-opening, confidence-building, life-affirming program that literally and scientifically helps remap your brain chemistry to change what you crave and want to eat. It’s a plan that will empower you from the top down and inside out. Sugar Savvy includes: • a complete 6-week plan to transform your eating and exercise habits • easy-to-assemble Power Meal Formulas plus more than 40 simple Power Meals and Snacks you can use to eat Sugar Savvy anywhere • Moving Affirmations that move your body and your spirit • inspirational stories and advice from the 17 Sugar Savvy Sisters who tried our program, every single one of whom lost weight • and much more! This one-of-a-kind plan beats obesity where it begins—in your brain. The Sugar Savvy motto: Eat whatever you want, but we will change what you want. Good Information but Time Consuming By Kimberly Hughes Brown I agree that most of this information and the recommendations for how you should be eating have been out for years. It's good information for people who eat a lot of processed food or who eat out a lot: Don't eat processed food; eat mainly fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains; cut sugar and salt out of your diet. I tried the plan for a few weeks and was successful at first. I found it to just be too time consuming for my schedule. I actually stopped exercising because I was spending so much time making my meals. It got to the point where planning and making my meals was taking up the majority of my day. That is not how I want to spend my time. I had hoped it would get easier but after 3 weeks it was too much. I was constantly thinking about my diet. Also, the first week of the "pallet cleanse" is very hard. I got to the point where I stopped eating rather than eat any more of the soup. (Which is NOT delicious as I made it.) Possibly a tried and true recipe would have helped with that since it basically just says take some water, veggies and seasoning and simmer. It is very expensive to follow this plan because of the sheer amount of food she wants you to eat. I was spending about $100 a week on groceries. Also some of the grocery items contradicted the idea of not eating low fat because of the added sugars. She always wanted you to buy the low fat versions of dairy products which I thought was confusing. Basically just be more conscious about what you put in your mouth, eat real food the majority of the time, don't eat processed foods, cut down on animal protein and get at least 30 minutes of exercise and at least 8 glasses of water a day.

After you read, you then you have to actually take a tablet of paper and write down each and every thing they think you are going to remember by reading. What a waste of money. I will certainly be asking for my money back.

Sugar Savvy Solution By Sandra This book emphasizes eating mostly fruits and vegetables and legumes, organic products, sugar-free yogurt, etc -- which is totally the healthy way to go and actually the way I was taught to eat by my parents. I've begun the plan tonight, Sunday, Oct. 19, and will have to report on my weight loss later. It promotes good nutrition practices which are based on scientific studies. I think I'll like it very much.

Mrs Dalloway (French Edition), by Virginia Woolf

Review "Virginia Woolf stands as the chief figure of Modernism in England, and must be included with Joyce and Proust in the realizaztion of experimental acheivements that has completely broken with tradition."-- The New York Times

The Mystery of Human Personality By A Customer Although the time covered in this complex novel is only one day, Virginia Woolf, through her genius, manages to cover a lifetime unraveling and exposing the mysteries of the human personality. The central character of the novel is the delicate Clarissa Dalloway, a disciplined English gentlewoman who provides the perfect contrast to another of the book's characters, Septimus Warren Smith, an ex-soldier whose world is disintegrating into chaos. Although Clarissa and Septimus never meet, it is through the interweaving of each one's story into a gossamer whole that Woolf works her genius. The book is set on a June day in 1923, as Clarissa prepares for a party that evening. Unfolding events trigger memories and recollections of her past, and Woolf offers these bits and pieces to the reader who must then construct the psychological and emotional makeup of Clarissa Dalloway in his own mind. We also learn much about Clarissa through the thoughts of other characters, such as her one-time lover, Peter Walsh, her friend, Sally Seton, her husband, Richard and her daughter Elizabeth. It is Septimus Warren Smith, however, driven to the brink of insanity by the war, an insanity that even his wife's tender ministrations cannot cure, who acts as Clarissa's societal antithesis and serves to divide her world into the "then" and the "now."In this extremely complex and character-driven novel, Woolf offers her readers a challenge. The novel is not separated into chapters; almost all of the action occurs in the thoughts and reminiscences of the characters and the reader must piece together the story from the random bits and pieces of information each character provides. The complexity of the characters may add to the frustration because Woolf makes it difficult for the reader to receive any single dominant impression of any one of them. This, however, forms the essence of the novel and displays the genius of Woolf: It is impossible to describe any human being in a simple phrase or collection of adjectives. We are many things to many people, all of them somewhat different, none of them the same, just as we are many things to ourselves.Throughout the book, the reader is constantly called upon to compare and contrast Peter Walsh and Richard Dalloway, the two significant love interests in Clarissa Dalloway's life. Compared to Peter, an adventurer, Richard Dalloway appears more than a bit reserved and dour. But, readers must constantly question this view of Richard as his personality seems to alter with his altering relationships.Intimacy, particularly emotional intimacy, and the preservation of one's uniqueness are two of Woolf's continuing themes. We find that Clarissa married Richard, in part, to preserve her sense of self; Peter would have demanded far more of her than she was, perhaps, willing to give. Here, Clarissa and Septimus, so outwardly different, would find they share much in common. While Clarissa feels threatened by her daughter's tenacious tutor, Miss Kilman, as well as by Peter, Septimus feels threatened by his doctor. Each feels the others are asking too much. Septimus and Clarissa even agree on the subject of death: "There is no death," Septimus declares, while Clarissa, the atheist, secretly believes that bits and pieces of her will remain intact forever.Although some characters in this book may, at first, appear to be one-dimensional, we soon learn that all are extraordinarily complex. There is Sally, impulsive yet considerate; Richard, bashful yet timid; Peter inhibited yet adventurous; Septimus, insane yet credible. And Clarissa? She is all of these things and more.It is, however, Woolf's torrential stream-of-consciousness prose that makes this novel a true masterpiece. Even those who find the plot of little interest will be drawn in by the exquisiteness of Woolf's language. This is a complex, character study in the fullest sense of the word, one with no easy answers, for Woolf, in the end seems to be telling us that perhaps, at our essence, we are all unknowable, even to ourselves.

Poetic lyricism in Virginia Woolf By mcl Any young aspiring writer should compare Woolf's early work, such as Night and Day to something like Mrs. Dalloway. The transformation in narrative strength is incredible. I think Woolf found her voice when she gave up on traditional technique and focused on vivid imagery, poetic language, and really getting into the souuls of her characters. Her views on love in this boook are heartbreaking. Love serves as mere convenience, romance is just an illusion. 9 times out of 10 people choose safety. Pretty cynical viewpoint, but she lived during the days of a crumbling Empire and wrote about it beautifully. She really achieved her greatest literary power later on in life. Also, this book studies insanity and the doctors who are impotent to help. I'm sure woolf would have the same view in today's heavily medicated society. This book is not for the faint of heart. She does not hide characters emotions, but tends to dwelon their weaknesses. The final party scene is brilliant. If you like this book, read To The Lighthouse, which is equally brilliant.

Tough, but worth the effort By Peggy Vincent It's not really fair to judge this book or its author by today's standards, but damn, this is a hard read. I'd read it about 20 years ago and recall struggling with the endless sentences and the rambling explorations of Mrs. Dalloway's interior thoughts, her every little fleeting idea, and the tiny events of the day in her life which this book chronicles. Then of course when The Hours was published, I rummaged around in the bookshelf, found it, and read it again. And then the movie came out with that wonderful cast of characters, and, well, I had to read it a third time. And I'll say this: it takes more than a single reading to harvest all the gems from this dense prose. Mrs. Dalloway grew on me with the passage of time and with three careful readings. The studied explorations into past and present, men and women, women and other women, society and the family, love and regret...it's a lot to take on in what is really a pretty small book - and only someone of Woolf's talents and brilliance could have made so much of so little.Highly recommended, but I'm sorry - you'll probably have to read it more than once to extract every single little diamond chip.

I used to read this book to my Mother who had dementia, and it really was the only book that seemed to keep her attention. It deals with day-to-day events that she could not only relate to, but see through the illustrations on each page. I highly recommend "The Sunshine on My Face" not only to facilities for memory impaired individuals, but also for caregivers at home with their loved ones.Linda Jenkins, family caregiver, Austin, TX

By SJ I ordered the 10th edition of, Sunshine on My Face, because it didn't mention dementia or anything related to memory difficulties on the cover. However, to my surprise, inside the 1st few pages of the book it mentions memory difficulties etc. in several places as well as on the back cover. I will return the book as my 85y/o mother, depending on the day, is very sensitive about her dementia. I would recommend changingthe back cover and maybe making the 1st few pages of the book perforated. The 1st few pages have valuable info.but could be upsetting to the person with memory issues. My mother has mid stage Alzheimer. Book has cute colorful pages.

"I hope you know that thirty-six-year-old men can die from overwork."Garrison Richards's secretary, Anthea, walked into his office and put an envelope on his desk. He looked up from scribbling on the yellow legal pad, surprised at the darkness that had fallen outside his windows. He didn't dignify her comment with an answer. But she apparently didn't need him to say anything."Your train ticket and other essentials are right here." She tapped the envelope with a manicured finger. "The weekend at the resort is already paid for. Your train leaves at eight in the morning."He put down his pen and glanced at his watch, frowning. It was much later than he thought. Nearly ten o'clock. New York, a bright and glittering jewel, flashed in its beautiful finery from his twentieth-story view."Are you kicking me out of my own office on a Thursday night?" he asked."Yes, I am. With the help of your mother."Garrison assumed that his mother had paid for the resort and train tickets, while Anthea made sure his schedule was clear. With help like this, who needed a wife?Anthea stood at his desk with the warm overhead light spilling over her still features, looking more motherly than his actual mother, in her practical gray pantsuit, the spectacles sitting on her gently lined face. She clasped her hands at her waist and watched him with endless patience."You have the cabin at the resort for the weekend," she said. "I already had your snowboarding equipment delivered." Anthea lifted a finger to forestall his complaints about missing work. "Since you've been trying to meet with Mrs. Taylor-Rodriguez about the latest draft of the agreement, I also arranged a meeting with her on Sunday afternoon before your train home in the evening."Garrison considered being firm with his secretary. Putting on the more serious than usual face that had his associates and junior attorneys scurrying to do his bidding. It rarely worked on Anthea, but she would at least know he was serious. That was one of the reasons he hired her. She was efficient and effective, yes. But he enjoyed immensely that she reflected his inner calm, the calm he wanted to reflect in his office. In nine years, he hadn't once regretted his decision. Even when she insisted on mothering him when no one else was around. Now wasn't the time, though. As usual, he had a lot of work to do."All the other work can wait." She pressed the button on the remote that controlled the windows, darkening them so he could no longer see outside to the brilliant nighttime Manhattan skyline. "You've been distracted lately. Your work hasn't started to suffer yet, but it might if you don't take a break. You haven't had a proper vacation in over a year."Garrison's lips tightened at her observation. Part of her effectiveness lay in that she knew how to reach him. His work was precise and thorough, very efficient, which was one of the reasons he was the top divorce attorney in the state. The idea that he could slip up and compromise his usual standards of excellence gave him pause."That's not very fair." He felt like a twelve-year-old boy debating the merits of a punishment."Life is not fair, as you're always fond of reminding me." Anthea withdrew to the door. She had left the office earlier at her usual time of five-thirty, but apparently came back to ambush him."Go, Garrison." Her faint smile chided him. "These broken marriages can wait until Monday morning."And so the next morning found him doing what she directed, getting on a train heading north to the Adirondack Mountains. With his overnight bag over one shoulder and a briefcase in hand, he looked like the only person in the first-class car with work in mind. His fellow passengers sat back with drinks already in front of them: mimosas, Bloody Marys and some with just plain coffee. He passed three women getting themselves settled into a quartet of seats. They were beautiful, he noticed automatically, well-made-up and expensively dressed. The kind of women he'd seen at New York society and industry parties he'd been invited to over the years. He idly wondered if they skied or were simply heading north to bask by winter fireplaces while carefully trained servants tended to their every need. When he passed them, his idle wonderings disappeared.Garrison tucked away his bag and claimed his seats, two sets facing each other that Anthea had arranged just for him, knowing he didn't like to be crowded. Soon the train began to move, and he sat back to make the most of the ride.Up ahead of him, he noticed that a fourth woman had joined the group of three he'd passed earlier. This woman was sitting with her back to him and speaking animatedly with her hands. She wore her shoulder-length hair in natural curls that brushed the back of her neck. When she stood to put something in the overhead luggage rack, Garrison noticed that she was tall, maybe even six feet, a height he'd always found…compelling. He admired her voluptuous shape, the way she filled out the long green sweater and the jeans she wore beneath it. His eyes returned to her again and again.Very occasionally, he thought he heard her low voice above the soothing rumble of the train moving over the tracks. There was something about the woman's voice that pricked an awareness of familiarity in him. But she never turned around. He wondered if it would be too ridiculous of him to walk past the four women then turn back around just so he could get a glimpse of the mystery siren. He dismissed the idea as quickly as it had come. He wasn't the type to get worked up over a woman, especially one he'd only seen from behind and hadn't even talked to.When the attendant arrived, he ordered a black coffee and opened one of the files he'd brought with him. Just to have something to work on during the train ride, of course."Reyna, I need you to cut his damn name off my body!"Marceline made a sound of frustration and looked at the inside of her wrist, where she had tattooed her soon-to-be ex-husband's name nearly three years before. Her normally beautiful and serene face was tight from stress. The long hair, twisted at the top of her head and fastened with silver chopsticks, only emphasized the unhealthy gauntness of her features.Sitting opposite Marceline, Reyna shook her head. "Sorry. I only put them on. I don't take them off." She smoothed her fingers over her friend's wrist then squeezed it with a reassurance she was far from feeling. Marceline's eyes were dark with a pain Reyna hoped never to experience.Beyond the long windows of the train, the landscape was awash in white—snowcapped mountains, pine trees heavy with late-winter white and gracefully twirling flurries drifting from the sky. Despite the turbulence in her friend, Reyna tried to hold on to the sense of peace the snow gave her.The train, taking them on their annual single women's trip into the Adirondacks for Valentine's Day, rattled soothingly over the tracks, a sound Reyna had always found meditative. But Marceline, still in the middle of divorce proceedings from the man she thought was the one true love of her life, looked uneasy. As if she'd rather be hidden away in her big Long Island house than heading to a ski vacation with three of her closest friends."You can see my skin guy in Manhattan," their friend Bridget said as she came back from the rest-room, catching the tail end of their conversation. She had ears like a cat. With her short, coiled hair and big amber eyes, she even looked like one. "He's a dermatologist. I'm sure he can take care of that for you." Bridget wrinkled her freckled nose."And how would you know that?" Louisa, who had gone to the restroom with Bridget, walked up behind her. She raised an eyebrow, half in inquiry, half in challenge. Her straightened, shoulder-length hair swung down to hide her face for a moment, then she shoved it back, revealing features that had stopped more than one man in his tracks.Bridget made a vague gesture to her face. "I had skin issues when I was younger. You all remember that, I'm sure.""Oh, yes. We remember." Louisa smirked. The four women had known each other since they were preteens at the same exclusive New York private school. They shared over fifteen years of friendship that had been through just about everything under the sun. Reyna, on scholarship that she and her blue-collar Brooklyn parents had worked hard for. Marceline, newly orphaned and recently arrived from Haiti. Bridget, a trust-fund baby looking for the next exciting thing. And Louisa, already cynical and frighteningly brilliant, intrigued at the idea of friendship with girls so different from her. With the arrival of the two women, Reyna excused herself to make her own way to the bathroom. The train rocked under her as she walked and lightly touched the seats of the other passengers without stumbling into them. The early-morning train from Penn Station to Saratoga Springs was full—after all it was the Friday before Valentine's Day weekend—but it wasn't overwhelming. The last few seats before the bathroom were even empty. She loved trains. It was because of her that the four of them took the train up to the resort every year instead of flying. But it was because of Bridget's expensive tastes that they traveled in the first-class car with its wider aisles, Wi-Fi and attendants who regularly came through the car offering everything from coffee to newspapers. As Reyna neared the bathroom, she noticed a man standing in the aisle. With his back turned to her, he leaned his shoulder against the wall of the moving train, looking as comfortable as if he were in his living room. Or office.Despite his casual clothes—the gray sweater across his broad shoulders, jeans that lovingly skimmed his body—everything about him shouted business. He held a cell phone to his ear and spoke into it in a low, intent voice that stroked a delicate place deep inside Reyna. An unexpected flutter of attraction took wing in her belly. The man's dark jeans draped over a backside that would be envied in any fitness magazine. Or a woman's bedroom. She bit her lip at the thought."I find it extremely difficult to care what he doesn't want to do. He had those children with the woman he's leaving behind, and so he has to help support them." His tone rumbled with casual power.Reyna came up behind him. "Pardon me," she said. "Are you waiting for the bathroom?"The man turned, and Reyna nearly lost her breath. His intent dark eyes swept her from head to foot in a single, scorching glance that was at odds with his cool demeanor. His face was not handsome; instead it was distractingly sexy with its full mouth, sharp cheekbones and dimpled chin. She knew him.Garrison Richards.Memories she'd long ago put behind her came rushing back. Garrison's impassive face as he sat next to her ex-husband at the conference room in his downtown law office. Ian watching her with the eyes of a stranger as if they hadn't spent the past eight years of their lives as man and wife. Reyna's horror when she'd realized just what it was that she had signed in those divorce papers. She flushed, mortified that she had just been lusting after Garrison Richards. That afternoon when they met five years ago, there had been nothing sexy about him. Only an off-putting sternness and judgment that left her cold.In the rocking car of the train, Garrison's gaze raked over her. She felt it from the tips of her snow boots to her shoulder-length curls that she'd sworn had been presentable when she'd left her apartment. She fought the urge to rearrange her hair. Instead, she touched the necklace at her throat, sliding the silver star along the chain. A habit she had when she was nervous or uncertain. He tipped the phone away from his ear and replied to her earlier question."The bathroom is empty. You can go ahead." Directed toward her, his voice was even more compelling, a deep and seductive rumble. He moved back to allow her to walk past him and into the bathroom. The door rattled shut, and the lock clicked. Reyna took a deep breath as she stared at herself in the mirror. She looked calm and in control, but her cheeks were blazing with heat—a combination of embarrassment and the unwelcome attraction she felt for the man who had represented her husband in their divorce. She quickly used the bathroom and pushed Garrison from her mind. Afterward, Reyna splashed some water on her face and took her time toweling her skin dry. She desperately hoped he wasn't near the bathroom anymore. But when she walked out, he was still nearby and still on the phone. But he had stepped away from the door to give her some room. He stared intently at her again and said something to the person on the other end of the phone before speaking to her."You look familiar," he said. "Do I know you?"Reyna ruthlessly shoved the attraction aside and gave him her most scornful look. "No, you don't."With that, she walked past him and made her way back to her friends.

He her ex's divorce attorney. She the victim of his work. However, the impact she made on him five years earlier was still there. They did have in common the love of the ski resort that brought them together. This story is endearing in that for all the awful things Reyna thought of Garrison he was able to redeem himself of. I related to this story in the way the author displayed that men and women process things very differently. In addition, she clearly displayed that men can feel as deeply as women do and that even the workaholics need love too...I loved his friend Wolfe and I hope he and his friend will get a story as well...First read of this author but would read other books of hers as well..

COLD NIGHT, HOT KISSES By JeaNida Luckie-Weatherall This is the first book I've read by this Author and I must say it's definitely not my last by a longshot. Totally enjoyed Snowy Mountain Nights had my attention from the beginning to the end and I couldn't put it down finished it in one sitting, couldn't put it down a total page-tuner. Loved the chemistry between Garrison & Reyna, a lawyer and a tattoo artist total opposites but with some toe-curling chemistry and trust issues, those cold nights turn in hot kisses. The characters and story was amazing and I highly recommend this book you won't be disappointed. Lindsay Evans job well done.

I usually read a romance novel everyday, but lately the books seem to become very repetitive, especially during the intimate scenes. Snowy Mountain Nights is the book I've been waiting for. The story line is great, the writing is magnificent. Oh boy, I can not begin to describe the love scenes. They were hot like fire and detailed to perfection without the rauchy sexual explicits other authors tend to use. Now, if you would excuse me as I search for other books by Lindsay Evans.

What if you saved a man's life and he went on to play a leading role in one of the bloodiest revolutions of modern times? Ted Whittlemore, a radical Australian journalist, does just that. In the late '60s, he saves Nhem Kiry, soon to become known as 'Pol Pot's mouthpiece'. The consequences haunt him for the rest of his days. When the Khmer Rouge take power in Cambodia, Whittlemore watches, fascinated and horrified, as the ideals he holds dear are translated into unfathomable violence. In the intervening decades, as he tries to make sense of what went wrong, it is as if Kiry's life has become intertwined with his own. In this gripping novel, Patrick Allington takes readers deep into the world of power politics and agents of influence. He enters the worlds of Nhem Kiry and Ted Whittlemore, and with humour, intelligence and an unfailing moral sense, brings them to life. Figurehead is about guilt and memory, and the awful distance that separates dreams from reality. It is about those people who, as George Orwell said, are 'always somewhere else when the trigger is pulled'.

A glimpse at a perpetrator of Cambodia's genocide By BD I picked up Patrick Allington's novel, Figurehead, at a book festival in Sydney a few years back and read it just recently in preparation for a trip to Cambodia. The book isn't well known in the U.S., which is a pity. The novel follows with varying degrees of historical accuracy the rise of Khieu Samphan, sidekick of the murderous Pol Pot, in the 1960s. The narrator is a left-wing Australian journalist who saves the life of the young revolutionary (who in the novel is named Nhem Kiry) and comes to regret it. This is a first novel, but the author's writing is crisp, understated and witty, while not making light of the horrors of the Khmer Rouge.
