If that's you, read on. Others? take your chances.I am just staggered by the surreal clarity, freshness, and droll madcap professor humor of the new English language collection of short, gem-like stories . Some of this stuff is so funny, I cried. Highly recommended! * * * * *

By Joe Da Rold This frustrating group of fantastical short stories strikes me as having great imagination but weak execution. In “A Thousand Drops,” the paint drops that make up the Mona Lisa leave the painting for lives of their own. What a great, whimsical idea! But when Aira starts to write the story of each drop’s adventure, the short story is ruined by lack of focus. Not only are the paint drops’ adventures unconvincing, but one wonders just how many droplets the author is going to write about? The title story “The Musical Brain” starts out appealingly as a memoir of a family in a small town. But symptomatic of the author’s weakness, he introduces a strange element then leaves it unexplained. What exactly is the musical brain? What is the truth about when the town librarian lived? And the story-within-a-story of the dwarves is confusing. In “The Criminal and the Cartoonist,” the two characters argue about a graphic novel about the criminal, supposedly written by the cartoonist 40 years earlier, but impossible because the cartoonist would have been a child and the criminal acts had not yet been committed. Aira not only ignores the challenge of delving into the riddles he has introduced, but the stories are overwritten and the endings deflate like a balloon a child no longer wants to play with. Based on this book, “Argentina’s greatest living writer” has an overrated reputation. As his own best critic, in “The Spy” he writes: “Looking back at what I’ve written, it all seems rather muddled…” And in “The All that Plows through the Nothing”, he writes that if he would get “straight to the point” he would not be “sacrificing the flow and balance of a well-told story.” Agreed.

Entertaining and thought-provoking soliloquies by a master of the surreal By earwig I had never heard of Cesar Aira until I came across a recent review of this book of short stories, his first to be translated from the original Spanish. It has been my loss. Aira is an endlessly fascinating spinner of extraordinary surreal tales - some springing from his own life as a boy and young man in Buenos Aires, others from some off-world premise entirely of his own. Part of the charm of his writing as translated is his chatty style of taking you into his confidence, like someone starting a conversation on a long bus ride or over a glass of wine in a summer twilight and then leading you further and further into his Daliesque universe of invention. Full of surprises and magic tricks but also of some intricately brain-teasing philosophical ideas. My favourite is probably the story of God's multi-dimensional tea party for the apes, gatecrashed by a subatomic particle - even that summary gives some idea of the extraordinary fertility of Aira's imagination. Highly recommended.
