BOOK FOUR IN THE MAINWARING SAGA
It is 1744. War between England and France has been formally declared when the dashing young American Edward Mainwaring, captain of His Majesty's sailing ship Pallas, is unexpectedly taken prisoner off the coast of Mauritius.
Mainwaring and his crew make a daring escape. Hungry for revenge, they steal a bizarre flotilla of ill-equipped ships and prepare to attack the French fleet headed by Mainwaring's old enemy, the dastardly Roche-Bourbon and his powerful ship Achille.
The French see Roche-Bourbon as the key to their victory in the Indian Ocean and are forced to make concessions to him, one of which is custody of the beautiful Lady Caroline Grenville - whose life becomes a nightmare of violence and mistreatment in his hands.
As a tropical monsoon threatens, Mainwaring prepares for his final, deadly confrontation with Roche-Bourbon. On the outcome of this personal battle rests the fate of England in the Indian Ocean, the possession of millions of bullion stored in Achille, and the life of Lady Grenville.
Captain Monsoon is the fourth and final book in Victor Suthren's series of thrilling seafaring yarns. Teeming with adventure and written with a vivid sense of history, it captures the excitements and dangers of life at the mast.

From Publishers Weekly Despite its quota of conventionally sure-fire ingredients--intrepid hero, brave sailors, vicious villain, lady in distress, and nonstop action--the latest entry in Suthren's usually engaging 18th-century seafaring series is a disappointment. Capt. Edward Mainwaring of the British Royal Navy (seen last in The Black Cockade ) and his man-o'-war, Pallas , are in the Indian Ocean, charged with foiling French efforts to form a fleet and attack India. While rescuing an English noblewoman from a French gunship, Mainwaring is captured and sent to a dungeon on Mauritius. Escaping only to discover that Pallas has been destroyed, he sets out to gather more ships to fight the French. After the monsoon and the deus-ex-machina arrival of a British frigate (carrying Mainwaring's fiancee), Mainwaring's climactic battle with his enemy, the Chevalier Rigaud de la Roche-Bourbon, ends with the lady showing that she's a crack shot with a pistol. Explicit gore and hints of kinky sex don't make up for the sloppy writing (three times in the space of a page, characters "hiss" rather than speak their dialogue). In previous Mainwaring adventures, Suthren has buckled the swash more tightly. Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.
From Library Journal The fourth installment in Suthren's series of 18th-century sea adventures (after Admiral of Fear , LJ 1/91) continues the story of Edward Mainwaring, a colonial American officer in the British Royal Navy. In the year 1744, Britain and France are locked in a struggle for valuable possessions in India. Action, intrigue, and good technical detail abound as Mainwaring, captain of the 44-gun frigate Pallas , sails the Indian Ocean and overcomes obstacles set in his path by an old French foe. Comparable to the work of C.S. Forester, Alexander Kent, and Richard Woodman in its evocation of 18th-century naval life and action on the high seas, this book is recommended for public libraries.- Harold N. Boyer, Marple P.L., Broomall, Pa.Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.
From Kirkus Reviews Clever, colonial Captain Mainwaring (Admiral of Fear, 1991, etc.) sails again for H.M. George II, tackling the fiendish French in the distant, warm waters of the Indian Ocean. After rounding the Cape of Good Hope and reaching a designated latitude, young Yankee skipper Ned Mainwaring opens the admiralty's secret orders and learns that he and his ship Pallas are to sail around the island of Mauritius to interpose themselves between the marauding French navy and the fledgling British outposts in India. The treacherous Frogs seek to dominate the Indian trade, and if they succeed, His Majesty's Empire will die aborning. Before reaching Mauritius, Pallas tangles with a French man-of-war that strikes its colors suspiciously early. The victorious Mainwaring boards the beaten ship to check it out and is promptly kidnaped, joining Lady Caroline Grenville, the pretty sister of an earl whose ship had been taken by the French. Dumped, whipped, and jailed on Mauritius, Ned must be rescued by his officers--but while the rescue is taking place, Pallas is sunk and her crew murdered by Ned's archenemy, the sadistic Chevalier Rigaud de la Roche-Bourbon, who now holds (and has cruel designs upon) virtuous Lady Caroline. With no ship of his own, Captain Mainwaring has to scrounge the waters for a wee borrowed flotilla. The odds are terribly against him, but there is help from the weather. And Ned's ladylove, Anne Brixham, is on the way to give her sweetheart all possible aid. Brisk, shipshape naval adventure. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

By Mike Brooks This series, and particularly the fourth and evidently final episode, borders on the implausible. It is so imaginative in its plotting, however, that it can be forgiven for its sometimes over-the-top sequences. It has become one of my most enthralling 18th century naval reads after a lifetime of being hooked on this venue. I can't wait to tackle his next series and hopefully many more to follow.

When i did find out, I was greatly amused but won't " spill the beans" so as not to spoil it for other readers.
