Wasser We don’t wear commemorative ribbons in memory of lives lost to America’s third largest cause of mortality. We don’t have bake sales or run marathons to raise funds to combat this quiet, pervasive killer. In fact, most of us are unaware that medical error -- in what should be the safest of all environments, our hospitals -- ranks only behind heart disease and cancer as our leading cause of death. Fortunately, James Lieber, an author with an inspiring social conscience and lifelong commitment to justice, has written a compelling and convincing analysis of medical error, shedding necessary light on this troubling reality. “Killer Care” is part expose and part practical handbook; it is as much an indictment of medical indifference and malpractice as it is a blueprint for effective patient advocacy. Lieber combines meticulous research with his usual graceful, strong writing style. The initial chapters carefully outline the causes and scope of the problem. Using anecdotal evidence to buttress objective research, Lieber paints a troubling picture of the state of health care in our nation’s hospitals. Garbled communication between health care providers, lack of proper sanitation, and overworked medical professionals lead to frightening outcomes for unsuspecting and trusting patients. In the midst of improper conduct, however, Lieber finds men and women who inspire and promote trust. These modest heroes, unfortunately, often cannot move encrusted and indifferent medical bureaucracies. The author has more than empathy for those fearful of unforeseen difficulties in our nation’s hospitals. Only the intervention of a family doctor caused Lieber not to lose his toes due to a gangrenous blackness of his feet. Imbued with a sense of urgency, Lieber spends much of the final chapters of his work outlining strategies and concrete actions patients can take on their own behalf. These include an emphasis on cleanliness, coherent and understandable prescriptions, and having an advocate articulate a patient’s needs, particularly in times of stress or confusion. Several of his pages are so efficient that prospective hospital patients would be well served to refer to them during a hospital stay. Conscientious critics like James Lieber serve our society’s best interests. His “Killer Care” should be required reading for every man and woman who provides a medical service, and for each of us who may spend time in one of the most dangerous places in America: our hospitals.

An important book By Robert Slocum This book succeeds in at least a couple of ways.James Lieber writes urgent, fact-filled prose which is impeccably suited to his topic. And the topic is nothing short of a medical crisis of our times.The first half of KILLER CARE is an exhortation, a call to action regarding the rampant mistakes in modern medicine in America. There is a great mix of (1) narratives of famous cases (like the diabetic in Florida who had his “good leg” amputated), and (2) statistics detailing the larger picture.At just the right time, there’s a seamless transition in which the second half of the book becomes a “user’s guide” (my term, not his) to doctors, hospitals, and nursing homes.In other words: here’s the sort of thing that can get you, first, and second here’s how you watch out for it.So much of the “cure” here is simple—better communication and better management—but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy to implement. Lieber highlights the state of Pennsylvania, which has a system that indemnifies doctors and nurses to encourage them to articulate and study errors after the fact. It works great, but no other state has taken this step. (The word “lawyer” just crossed your mind, didn’t it? Lieber is one, although not of the ambulance-chasing variety.)Atul Gawadne has written about this theme in the New Yorker, and he has a book out about lists. About getting doctors to apply the kind of quality control that has made our airlines so much safer the past few decades. He’s a surgeon. He’s got a more measured style. With Lieber it’s more like he’s presenting a case. IT WORKS.The quality of medical care cuts to the very essence of what it is to be a humane society, so the broadly political side of this book appeals in one way; and we all are likely to face serious medical crossroads ourselves (or our loved ones will), so the pragmatic part of this volume is also very welcome. You have rights. There are questions you should ask, as to how compliant hospitals are relative to best practices. For example, you can find out if someone with a crazy infection was last in the hospital room they want to give you.If I have a quibble with the book, it’s that I think there could have been a more soaring ending. It’s more a drumbeat of fabulous information, presented in a very winning, slightly eye-rolling style. By the time you’re near the end, this case is DONE. The jury is going to take about six minutes to vote for conviction. It doesn’t matter exactly how the prose finishes.
