Not very helpful for actually understanding the Scriptures By Jack H This book takes a very, "literal only" view of the Scriptures and sticks to it even in the face of absurdity.In the first paragraphs of the book, the author basically insults the readers by saying, "The plain man ought to have no difficulty in understanding the Bible." So there...if you don't understand it (and if you did, why would you be reading a book titled "Understanding the Scriptures"?) it's because you're not even up to the level of "the plain man." The actual problem here is that McConnell is taking a, "it means exactly what it says and only what it says" approach so that any misunderstanding can and should be cleared up by consulting a dictionary. I do not share that view of the Bible (I do not believe John actually saw locusts with women's hair and lion's teeth (I think they were helicopters...).I don't think this book actually helps in understanding the Scriptures, and in some ways clouds the understanding of the meaning behind much of Scripture by taking this literal-meaning-only viewpoint.I cannot recommend this book for anyone other than someone who already has a good understanding of Scripture and doctrine and is looking for a literalist's viewpoint.
