5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Couldn't put it down By Erin Conlisk Based on a true story, this book haunts me. Since reading Windcatcher, I have told countless friends about the adventures of Melode. To have such sympathy and understanding for a woman so different from myself is simultaneously breathtaking, uplifting, and terrifying. I don't know how the author gets it so right. I highly recommend this book. I couldn't put it down.

By Lindah I would give this story an A+ in its ability to relate the living conditions of early England. Especially in relating the sad conditions that the women of the time lived. They had no worth even if they were a wife. They were nothing more than slaves. Servants were treated even worse, especially if they were female. I only put up 3 stars because the story did not have enough drama, suspense or something that would make me want to keep turning pages. The writing was very good when it came to describing the living conditions. Made you glad you did not live in those times. The time on the ships did not convey the misery, the hopelessness and maybe even the drama that could have been happening. I felt like I was maybe reading a text book.

I love character development in a novel and It would be great to follow Mel longer through her development...to see how her choices and actions impact her future deveopment. And I love history brought to life. I've already reserved the next book.
