In the village of Riese in the Venetian plains was born on the 2nd of June, 1835, a child who was destined to leave his mark on the world's history. Giuseppe[*] Melchior Sarto was the eldest of the eight surviving children of Giovanni Battista Sarto, the municipal messenger and postman of Riese, and his wife Margherita. They were poor people, and it was difficult sometimes to make both ends meet. The daily fare was hard and scanty, and the future pope was clothed, as an Italian biographer puts it, "as God willed." But both Giovanni Battista and his wife came of a hard-working, God-fearing stock, who could endure manfully and suffer patiently, and who taught their children to do the same.

She was born in 1869 as Alice Forbes into a Presbyterian family. Her mother died when she was a child. In 1900 she became a Roman Catholic. Only a few months later, she entered the Society of the Sacred Heart, as a 31-year-old postulant. She wrote numerous books, including brief biographies of Saint Ignatius Loyola, Saint John Bosco, Saint Teresa of Ávila, Saint Columba, Saint Monica, Saint Athanasius, Saint Catherine of Siena, Saint Benedict, Saint Hugh of Lincoln, Saint Vincent de Paul, and, most famously, Pope Saint Pius X. She died in 1936.

A great saint and pope that can still teach us something By JC Insightful read and descriptive in how his poor upbringing shaped him into a great pope needed during his time. Chilling to read some of the problems of the day as many problems then are still with us. Hes was right about Modernism and the effects it would have on society as we are still facing some of the effects he foretold.

Prisoner Of The Vatican - A Champion Of The Faith By propertius If it is true that no true history of a war can be written until 100 years or so after the war, then I hazard the view that no true biography of a pope can be written until two or three hundred years until the death of a pontiff. Assuming this, the point might well be asked what can be learned from what in this case is a hagiography, especially one written by a nun. As it turns out, quite a bit.Read between the lines or to be more exact, one does get a sense of the times and the world as seen through the author's eyes e.g. can you imagine with today's shortage of priest, that Sarto's biggest obstacle in entering the priesthood was that his family did not have the funds to pay for seminary tuition! Many trends that concerned this pontiff and perhaps (I use that qualifier considering the author) throughout were about science and faith ergo modernism, updating liturgical music (no surprise considering the time spent in Venice), reinvigorating priestly exercises i.e. the Breviary, and always the sacraments and the laity. In this regard he was a pastoral pope.Considering that this pontiff's election was influenced and aided by the Hapsburg dynasty, it is of interest to note how his concerns with Catholic development in France and England played such a role in his pontificate and how this unworldly pontiff but it was always in the framework of the sacraments and the faith. It is ironic that if his heart did not kill him, the events of August 1914 would have broken his heart.A book for those who are sympathetic and wish a greater introduction to this saint and his times.

By Susan Grant I enjoyed learning about this "reluctant" Pope and wonderful Saint who was our Pope from 1903 to 1914. When asked about his miracles, he stated with humility, "it's the keys". Highly recommend for your Lenten reading, or if you just want to learn more about a relatively recent Saint, with a very interesting life story.
