About the Author Flavius Josphus (c. A.D. 37-100) was born to an aristocratic Jewish family, served as a priest, and later became the commander of Jewish forces in Galilee following the revolt against Rome that began A.D. 66. Captured by the Romans, Josephus spent his later life in Rome under the patronage of the Roman emperors where he composed his history of the Jewish people and his account of the Jewish war that led to the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in A.D. 70.

Besides that though, Josephus does an amazing job defending the Jews and their history against historians like Apion. A very good read!!

There is a dead link in the virtually unusable Table of Contents for Book I, but the text itself only includes the second book. This begins, ironically, with Josephus' own reference to the first book.

By martin feldman Anyone who has read Josephus Flavius and actually finished any of his books may find this book of interest. Josephus remains the only author who describes the Jewish wars with the Romans as well as other conflicts, life, religious practices and geographic locations of the early Jewish people up to the time of the 1st Temple. How accurate is Josephus? For the most part he is quite accurate if one is careful to separate what is fact from his habit of making himself important. One also has to take into account for whom he is writing at the time.......the Romans. This little treatise is a rebuttal to those who denigrate the religious practices of the Jews at the time. In many parts it is very specific in rebutting statements and accusations which make it even more difficult to read. This book should not be read before any of Josephus' books that are in print. I can only recommend it to those who want to read Josephus and to anyone following the times in a scholarly manner. It's not a book for the average reader; there are others which are far more compelling than this one.
