Two men were standing in front of the Empire Theatre on Broadway, at the outer edge of the sidewalk, amiably discussing themselves in the first person singular. It was late in September and somewhat early in the day for actors to be abroad, a circumstance which invites speculation. Attention to their conversation, which was marked by the habitual humility, would have convinced the listener (who is always welcome) that both had enjoyed a successful season on the road, although closing somewhat prematurely on account of miserable booking, and that both had received splendid “notices” in every town visited.

By Harold Wolf An interesting plot with a late Victorian setting, 1911 publication, but could almost stand as a 21st-century contemporary romantic novel. A young man from Blakeville, west and near Chicago, marries a local and they move to NYC where she makes it big in theater. Harvey, er, uh, 'What's-His-Name' becomes the stay at home dad with their daughter. Everyone knows him as Nellie Duluth's husband, but never can anyone come up with a last name, since Nellie used a stage name. Harvey was simply Mr. What's-His-Name, or Nellie Duluth's husband.Of course eventually his self-worth is diminishes to even less than his name. The relationship falters. The book is a true study of the man who seems to have forgot how to be a man. More of a stretch for modern day than 100 years ago.Chapters: I Our Hero; II Miss Nellie Deluth; III Mr. Fairfax; IV Luncheon; V Christmas; VI The Revolver; VII The Lawyer; VIII Blakeville. There is a satisfying ending, but not what you might expect. Famous illustrator, Harrison Fisher, provided 4 illustrations for the original publication: "Nellie Duluth"-frontispiece; Fairfax sitting on a trunk; "Phoebe"; "He stopped, aghast, petrified".This author, George Barr McCutcheon (1866-1928), wrote about 30 other books and plays and became a very famous Indiana author. He roomed at Purdue University with another famous author-to-be, George Ade. McCutcheon wrote "Brewster's Millions" which has been made into a movie 9 times, including once in 1985 starring Richard Prior & John Candy. George Barr McCutcheon had an older brother who was a noted illustrator/cartoonist and sometimes author, John T. McCutcheon. All 3 of these men have books yet in print, and are fun books to read today.

A timely topic for the tabloids, but even better fodder for this early 20th century novel by George Barr McCutcheon. Not exactly a cheerful read, but cleverly done and entertaining.
