Bram Stoker and Anne Rice were my companions through my formative years. I do however, like my vampires dark, as opposed to the sparkly variety. So, when I ran across this ARC of Dark Wine by Beth Tashery Shannon, I requested immediately.Catherine is an US expatriate, settling in on a new adventure in Egypt with her husband. She is used to being the breadwinner for her artist husband so this is the first time she isn’t working and left at home. Understanding the culture, language and exploring the city, she is left to her own devices. The story takes place in the mid-80’s, Egypt, which I found curious. Why the 80’s? Based on the descriptions, I would guess this was the time frame the author visited and she wanted to use her memory of the exotic land, since Egypt has gone through some major upheaval since then. That being said, I loved the setting of the book. The mystique of ancient Egypt. A stranger in a strange land. The prose were rich and flowery, which added to the dark sensuousness of the story.A random encounter at a Museum brings Catherine face to face with Geoffrey. Their chemistry is instantly crackling, but this insta-lust didn’t worked for me. I wanted something more dire or compelling forcing them together. Even the way they arrange to meet seemed a little underwhelming. Who goes to the movies with a hot vampire? There is no tension about the husband either since they have an open relationship. The vampire lore was original and I enjoyed the explanation of how vampires came to be. The story was satisfying, although I’m not pleased about the ending. My personal preference. All in all, rich storytelling, lush setting, and characters I could feel for.

This is a truly beautiful novel, and definitely one of those rare novels that stays with you, and goes much deeper than an ordinary vampire novel. This book gives us a serious vampire too, a character who really makes you feel that he might have been alive for centuries. You can feel, as you read further into his mind as the story progresses, the weight he carries that is the combination of who he once was as a human being, and who he has been forced to become in order to survive and retain his sanity. And that's one of the many questions that are deeply explored here -- what will any of us do to survive? And is there anything stronger than the survival instinct? Is it love? Or is it closer to addiction? (And what could be a more acute and appropriate question for these times?) This novel is very different from all the recent "Barbie-Vampire" sagas and their imitators. Don't get me wrong -- I tore through all the Twilight books and Vampire Academy and had fun with all of them. But this novel takes us on an entirely different kind of journey. For one thing, it is set in Egypt, which the writer clearly knows intimately, and I was swept away by the atmosphere and power of both modern Cairo, and the pull of the ancient in those pyramids. The texture and color, sound and atmosphere of place, are alive on every page. I really felt that I was there. The title could not be more accurate -- the story will take you to dark places, and it is intoxicating, like wine. I loved these characters -- then I worried about them, and then they really got under my skin and made me look at my own life. In other words, finally we have a vampire novel about and for grownups, and it's definitely the best imagining of the complicated emotional life of a vampire that I've ever read. But then, it's also a terrific thriller! I could not put it down -- stayed awake all night to find out what was going to happen to Catherine. And don't think you know, because the end caught me totally off guard. It's beautiful, and real, sometimes even very funny, and then very sad and poignant. Cannot recommend this novel highly enough.

He is an artists and she has given up her dreams and her job for Terry's dreams and his work. They started out with an "open" marriage, but frankly, things are falling apart. Then Catherine meets Geoffrey, and we instantly know he is a Vampire.Because of so many reasons she gives in the book, Cat just doesn't want to break it off with Geoffrey, yet she still has ties to Terry. Geoffrey has a long, old, sad tale of his own, while she is determined to love him with out making the same mistakes as others have made where he is concerned. The writing was eloquent and the descriptions vivid in all areas. I liked how Geoffrey was "born" if you will. The pyramids and cafe's were all amazing. However, there was FAR too much sex described causing me to have to skip forward after the first go-round. It became down right upsetting and really took away from the book because I wanted more focus on the relationships, not the bedroom. Had it not been for that, I could have given this a 3 or even 4 star review. It is dark, and it leaves you sad. Over all it made me wish I had read another book about Vampires or Egypt that wasn't quite so dark in the end.My copy came from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review and nothing more.
