Sometimes it takes a barren landscape to see the beauty of God s creation. Phineas King knows better than to expect anything but shock and pity wherever he shows his face. Horribly scarred from the tragic accident that claimed his mother s life, he chooses to keep his distance from everyone, focusing his time and energy on the bees his family raises. If no one sees him, no one can judge him. So why does he start finding excuses to seek out Deborah Lantz, the beautiful new arrival in town? Deborah can t get out of Bee County, Texas, soon enough. Once her mother and younger siblings are settled, she is on the first bus out of this dusty town. She is only waiting on the letter from Aaron, asking her to return to lush Tennessee to be his fraa. But that letter never comes. As she spends time getting to know Phineas hoping to uncover the man beneath the scars she begins to realize that she no longer minds that Aaron hasn t sent for her. As both Deborah and Phineas try to come to terms with lives that haven t turned out the way they imagined, they discover that perhaps Gott s plans for them are more extraordinary than they could have dreamed. But they need to let go of their own past sorrows and disappointments to find the joy and beauty that lies just ahead for them both. "

He is bitter and doesn't think that anyone will ever love him or even want to look at him By lovemykidz316 It has been two years since Abigail Lantz's husband died and she decides it is time to move on. She moves her family to Bee County, Texas to live with her brother and to be near a childhood beau in hopes of a new beginning. Her daughter Deborah is less than thrilled. She misses their home in Tennessee, her friends and her beau. As soon as her mother and younger siblings are settled she is determined to head back home, all she is waiting on is a letter from Aaron. She soon discovers that the plans she thought she had in Tennessee have fallen through and now she is stuck in Texas and is trying to discover what God's plan is for her life.Phineas King is a man covered in scars from a horrific accident that also killed his mother when he was eight years old. He has grown accustomed to the looks of shock and pity from everyone he meets. He chooses to keep to himself whenever possible and focuses his time on the bees that his family raises. He is bitter and doesn't think that anyone will ever love him or even want to look at him. When Deborah meets Phineas her first reaction is shock, but she looks past his scars and sees the man inside. She tries her best to try to get to know him, but Phineas is intent on pushing her away. Can they both put aside their disappointments and past hurts to find the joy that God has in store for their future?I really loved this book! The author Kelly Irvin has a great writing style that pulled me right into the story! My heart broke for Phineas at the pain he has felt in his lifetime. I enjoyed Deborah's boldness and spirited personality. The story of Phineas and Deborah was great, but I also enjoyed the other character's and their stories. I would love to read more about Abigail and the new life she is beginning and I hope the author decides to write another book and expand more on her!***This book was provided to me through the booklook bloggers program in exchange for my review.

It is about a girl named Deborah who falls in love with a man named Phineas who for a living takes cares of bees and sells honey. Phineas didn't believe anyone could fall in love with him since he has scars on his face from an accident as a kid but Deborah sees past it and sees him for who he really is, a person she could spend the rest of his life with.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. By Robin Ennis Willson I was once a professional beekeeper. We had 100 hives between what we owned and managed, some in Vermont, some in New York. It's a facinating hobby and profession. With the title and great cover, I was expecting to see some good beekeeping facts and lifestyle in this book, and I did, but they were not all accurate I am sorry to say. That being said, this was a very good story that's easy to recommend. I love that Amish stories discuss God in their everyday lives and make Him part of every situation. It's also a great romance for two families, both mother and daughter, father and son.Deborah's father died and her mother Abigail decided to move their family to Texas where her brother was, and an old beau as well. The old beau would like to marry Abigail, but she finds new competition for her attention in another member of the community.Deborah is determined to go back to Tennessee once her mother gets settled. They left friends, family and a special someone behind. Phineas was in a horrible accident years back, but is still not mentally healed. Physically he was terribly scarred on his face and head, and doesn't think anyone could ever love him. He and his father find solace and financial security in beekeeping. This book is about the journey they take and how God has a plan for us all, even if it's not what we expected. Or where. And that at some point we have to take a chance, trust, and sometimes start over again.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the Zondervan Fiction - Netgalley book review bloggers program. By Deborah Wear Finkle I heartily recommend Ms. Molloy’s book of poetry, Indigo Fantasy, to any reader who enjoys revisiting everyday experiences in a way that enhances and adds a richness of dimension to life. Although I’m only familiar with two of the list of eight poetry styles she notes using in her introduction, ignorance is bliss in this case. Her masterful use of metaphor throughout, easily takes the reader into her world of mindful appreciation of life. Colors are anthropomorphized and take on personalities such that it seems normal to use action verbs for their unique characters. Orange “lilts,” “teases,” “flirts” and “flings” while going through life.Other poems are beautiful in simplicity; "Cloud" offers, “Each fluff of water droplets.” Of course everyone knows that a cloud is formed of water droplets and we describe clouds as fluffy, but this one phrase metaphorically pulls the art and science together for a new appreciation. There is wonderful humor in several metaphors and shared experiences; "The Anniversary" reveals how much love there can be in simple endearing moments that are lost to those focused on façade.Somehow, like magic, her wonderful and skillful use of imagery activates all senses in a way that is rarely found in a literary work. She reminds us all to truly experience the richness that life provides (if we give it a chance). Beauty is discovered in the simplest of things if one is just present. If you want a read that is both easy and complex, that will make you smile, that can teach added dimensionality AND costs less than a cup of latte, Indigo Fantasy is for you! Looking forward to reading it again and again!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Bring Momentum to the Movement By Curt Liesveld David Rendall boldly asserts and clearly articulates that the things that make us "different" are not problems we need to solve or disadvantages we need to eliminate. Rather he suggests that those things that make us "different" from others will often be the raw material of our lives that can provide us with our greatest sources of potential, advantage, effectiveness and joy. Daivd has certainly taken the raw uniqueness of his life and transformed into a sophisticated ability to communicate an important message in an interesting and entertaining manner. This book will make a significant contribution to the Strengths Movement as it helps individuals move from self-awareness and self-acceptance to personal amplification and more frequent opportunities for affiliation.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. FREAK ON! By Mike Ammons In The Freak Factor, David Rendall is able to capture the very essence of today's worker. All of our lives we are taught to be normal and if we are not, then we need to work hard on the areas of our weaknesses to conform to normality. Instead of fitting into the mold that education, organizations, and society have taught and trained us to fit into; Dave instructs us that we should "Freak Out" rather than "Fit In". We all are "Freaks" in our own way but the trick is to find your "Circus" and let your "Freak Flag Fly". I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever been told that they have a problem. Instead of minimizing these areas, take the advice of David Rendall and "Exaggerate" what it is that makes you a freak. So, FREAK ON!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. For the Freak in all of us! By Mdenisewb I love this book! The very concept was appealing but then to get into it and see the practical applications of the key thought - unbelievable! I see myself differently after reading this, I have developed a comfort in the things that are different about me. Before I definitely played those "freak factors" down and after reading this book - I FLAUNT them! Anyone who wants to carefully challenge what you believe about yourself or others should read this book.

Compassionate and effective strategies for raising a child with ADHD. Parenting children with ADHD, whether diagnosed or undiagnosed, can be challenging and complex. But just as a child who struggles with reading can learn to decode words, children with ADHD can learn patience, communication, and solution-seeking skills to become more confident, independent, and capable. This book, rich with optimism, tips, tools, and action plans, offers science-based insights and systems for parents to help cultivate these skills. Combining expert information with practical, sensitive advice, the eight "key" concepts here will help parents reduce chaos, improve cooperation, and nurture the advantages―like creativity and drive―that often accompany all of that energy. Based on author Cindy Goldrich's seven-session workshop entitled Calm and Connected: Parenting Kids with ADHD©, this book focuses on developing and strengthening effective interpersonal skills in both parents and children as a way to improve conflict resolution. Following the parenting principle to "Parent the child you have," Goldrich offers advice to help readers tailor their parenting to meet the needs of their unique child. The book also leads parents to recognize the value of being a leader and a guide to children, building parents' confidence in their decision-making, and giving children a sense of safety, security, and confidence. The principles outlined in 8 Keys to Parenting Children with ADHD are appropriate for parenting kids of all ages―until they have "launched" and are on their own.

Fantastic!” (Jodi Sleeper-Triplett, MCC, SCAC, BCC, JST Coaching & Training, Author of Empowering Youth With ADHD)

From the Author When I began coaching teens and college students who have ADHD, I quickly discovered that it is often the parents who really need the support.  I have met so many wonderful, caring parents who are at a loss as to why they, and their children, struggle so much.  The reality is that love and logic are not sufficient when you are dealing with inconsistencies, challenges, and frustrations in raising your child who has ADHD.  Once the diagnosis is made, the most important treatment is parent education and training - you often need a Black Belt in parenting! In working with parents, my philosophy is, "Parent the child you have".  Not the one you thought you would have or that others tell you that you would have if you just parented THEIR way.  I help parents and professionals nurture children thought tolerance, empathy, and support, with a healthy balance of guidance, structure and discipline.  As I say to parents: "Don't bend the Universe - too much."  Prepare them for the real world, but know when to give them that extra chance they may need.

Important Read for Parents of Children with ADHD By Marilyn Price-Mitchell PhD From the moment I picked up this book, I knew it was an important read for parents of children with ADHD. As one of those parents, I wished I had had Goldrich's knowledge and advice when I was raising my own child with ADHD (now an adult.) This book is filled with the latest research, and Goldrich puts it in clear and understandable language -- ready to apply in your home. Looking back on raising my child, I know I would have been a better parent had I read this book! I highly recommend!

I enjoyed the first two books in this series, but I had to work to finish this one, Follow Love. I have to like the characters to enjoy a book and I just didn't care what happened to Tess. This book was more about sex and less about relationships. I am really looking forward to starting the next book in this series because the writing is good, the description of Alaska is beautiful and I like the characters, except Tess.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Follow Love By BookSnuggle I received a copy of this book for an honest review. Tess met Nathan while She was on vacation in Alaska with her family. Tess and Nathan have a steamy relationship. When it's time for Tess to leave it's an emotional time for them. They are not sure what will happen with their relationship since Tess lives in North Carolina and Nathan lives in Alaska. To me love scenes can be sensual, steamy, and romantic without being so graphic. As the story went on the love scenes got more graphic and just took away from being sensual and romantic. I did enjoy all the different characters. Also, the author did a great job in describing the scenery in Alaska and North Carolina. Overall the story was good and I will probably read the next book in the series.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Engrossing, Another Winner in the Diamond Creek Series By BookBelle This is Nathan and Tess's story. What I enjoy about this series is that each book so far is a standalone read, Alaskan setting is captivating and the perfect backdrop to fall in love. Tess is vacationing in Alaska with her family, and when she meets Nathan, she is immediately attracted to him. The attraction is mutual, although the reality is that she lives thousands of miles away and has built a successful career which poses some consideration when it comes to pursuing something permanent between them. The journey in merging their two lives for the sake of love is steamy, romantic and gets bumpy, too, thanks to a villainous ex. If you enjoyed the first book in the series, you'll want to read this one, too.

Just as he is finding liberation from the burdens of his middle-aged life-an unfulfilling marriage finally ended, a bartending job left behind-the narrator of Indian Leap receives a shattering phone call. The terrible news propels him back into the life of his ex-wife, as he accompanies her to rural Massachusetts to retrieve her twelve-year-old nephew, now an orphan. Back in New York, he finds himself reunited with his wife, again at the bar, and raising a child who is desperately in need of a father. Stuck with the consequences of his loyalty, he finds solace in his friends-as brilliant and hilarious as they are self-destructive-which leads him to drinking, carousing, and a damaging affair with a waitress. Indian Leap is an evocative exploration of the love, fear and resistance that exists between parents and children. Richly narrated by the ruminative husband, Kanor has chronicled how fractured lives are unwittingly healed, how a boy becomes a man and how a man becomes a father in trying times.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. fascinating and compelling By R. Eighmey All great jazz improvisation is grounded in disciplined observation. Artists take flight through their own interpretations bringing their gifts of nuance, appreciation, homage, reality, and dreams to the work. Although you may not recognize it at first, the really good musical storytellers always stay true to the thread established with the first few bars, explore that theme and build tone upon tone, each of them enriching the idea until the ensemble reunites with a driving flair or a quiet denouement.Seth Kanor’s debut novel, Indian Leap, is such a work. Played by a single narrator over the course of six years in the intertwined lives of a middle-aged man, his wife, friends, and most important the boy, Sparrow—his wife’s nephew—abandoned by circumstances whom the narrator and his wife adopt. Kanor’s narrative riffs play equally well in rural Massachusetts where the boy spent his first twelve years as they do in the Soho bar, where Kanor’s narrator works, inhabited by an operatic chorus of Runyonesque characters, and among the boy’s schoolmates and teachers.Through diverse characters Kanor sheds light on the social, political, and human shifts at the end of the 1990s and beginning of the new century. The rhythm of the book is palpable. Sections move then build and, on occasion, come to a breathtaking stop, only to pick up again sometimes at a slower pace that may seem to meander, until you are taken up by the beat again.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A truly spectacular novel By Clifton Leaf There is nothing half-hearted about Seth Kanor’s extraordinary first novel. Indian Leap is a love story for the ages—and though Kanor serves up his narrative in rich, heaping spoonfuls, he somehow leaves the reader feeling hungrier with each paragraph. I can’t remember a time I savored a novel so much. The book starts with a death (I promise I’m not giving anything away), which thrusts the unnamed narrator back into the life he left behind (an ex-wife, a dismal night job) and into a dystopian small-town community that trusts him as little as he trusts it. As the plot rapidly unfolds, one can’t help but plead for the narrator to break free. But what keeps him there, tethered to his unforgiving past, is something powerful and rare: a love that builds slowly, honestly, heroically, unpredictably to the very last page. This is a book you will begin again the moment you finish it. Indian Leap is achingly good.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A deeply human novel By Nick Indian Leap is emotionally rich--a novel that manages to be an absolute pleasure to read even as it explores darker aspects of life. It's startlingly alive, filled with colorful, evocative description and memorable characters. It examines the choices we all face in life--between duty and living for oneself, between caution and taking risks--in completely fresh ways. Throughout, the novel is perfectly pitched and you'll find yourself laughing, again and again, even as the narrator grapples with divorce, death, and mental illness. This is an author with deep, deep sympathy for his characters--and for humanity.

Summer of 1876: San Francisco is in the fierce grip of a record-breaking heat wave and a smallpox epidemic. Through the window of a railroad saloon, a young woman named Jenny Bonnet is shot dead.

The survivor, her friend Blanche Beunon, is a French burlesque dancer. Over the next three days, she will risk everything to bring Jenny's murderer to justice - if he doesn't track her down first. The story Blanche struggles to piece together is one of free-love bohemians, desperate paupers, and arrogant millionaires; of jealous men, icy women, and damaged children. It's the secret life of Jenny herself, a notorious character who breaks the law every morning by getting dressed: a charmer as slippery as the frogs she hunts.

In thrilling, cinematic style, Frog Music digs up a long-forgotten, never-solved crime. Full of songs that migrated across the world, Emma Donoghue's lyrical tale of love and bloodshed among lowlifes captures the pulse of a boomtown like no other.

87 of 95 people found the following review helpful. "Facts as hard as rocks." By Amelia Gremelspacher This novel is set with engaging historical detail of San Francisco in 1876, It is based on a true murder mystery of that time, and its characters are intriguing occupants of an underworld that in fact existed. Jenny dressed as a man, and in that era cross dressing could result in prison. Her name will evoke dozes of hits online. Blanche worked as a dancer and entertained men on the side to support her "fancy man" Arthur. Their one year old son P'Tit had been farmed to be raised in the country. What follows is a fascinating and horrifying account of real baby farms, homes in the business of tending infants and children for money and which were most often appaling in their conditions. The entire view of the underside of the glittering post gold boom San Francisco is evoked in detail that allows the reader entry into this closed world. The characters are multi-dimensional, and each is fascinating in her own right. This book appears to be a large departure from her previous work. In fact, "Room" shares with this novel the world of women struggling against the strictures in which they find themselves. Donoghue also has a back list including "Slammerkin" another historical novel with women who must make a living in a world who sees their worth in strictly defined limits. Some graphic scenes are portrayed, but frankly I found the state of the baby farm to be more shocking than the sexual scenes. I found this book to be interesting, well written, and educational. References are provided at the end that include the genesis of the songs sung by the characters in question. I recommend this book.

So when I first heard about Frog Music, I was so excited to read it. Unfortunately, I was completely disappointed.Frog Music, which is set in 1870s San Francisco in the midst of an incredibly warm summer and a smallpox epidemic, takes up the story of a real historical figures. Jenny Bonnet, a fast-talking, pants-wearing frog hunter befriends Blanche Beunon, a French burlesque dancer and prostitute. One night, Beunon flees her Arthur, her pimp and boyfriend. Blanche follows Jenny outside of the city to plot her next move. Trouble is close behind, though, and through the window one night, Jenny is shot and killed. The story follows Blanche's quest to discover her friend's murderer.I was taken quickly with the historical aspects (having just finished and loved Kate Manning’s My Notorious Life) and cursory descriptions of the book as a whole. I do have a better picture of 1876 San Francisco - the ravaging impact of smallpox, the racial tension with Chinese immigrants, and the Gold Rush sentimentality. However, despite all of my excitement, even as I first sat down to read, I was unable to really get into the story. Part of the issue was, I didn't really like any of the characters. Also, the book started to get explicit. Blanche is a woman who loves sex and has quite a few rough encounters that are fairly hard-core.I have trouble with plots in which very few characters are good or appealing (Breaking Bad, for instance, yes, I know, it's blasphemy to dislike that show, but I do). In part because Blanche is so inherently flawed and selfish, and given that the novel was rife with explicit sex scenes, my distaste started to add up early and quickly. Additionally, the plot kept moving back and forth in time, over the few weeks preceding and following the murder, which I found a bit frustrating and confusing. The book had extremely long chapters, only 8 in about 400 pages, which I generally dislike as well. Finally, the pace of the plot was fine, but the story itself just wasn't all that engaging. All and all, I just didn't like it. The book took me about 2 weeks to read, mostly because I just didn't really care what happened next. So, my recommendation? Skip it.

34 of 38 people found the following review helpful. Emma Goes a Little Over the Top By J. Jamakaya I am a big fan of Emma Donoghue but I did not think "Frog Music" was up to her excellent standards. I think she set out to deal with some heavy issues in a popular format, the whodunit, but the result is an overstuffed melodrama. On the positive side: The murder mystery that is central to the story is compelling and the solution to the murder is surprising and thought-provoking. The social underside of San Francisco in 1876 plays a big role and, through the story, Donoghue exposes the alarming levels of discrimination and brutality that existed in the so-called "good old days." I loved the character of Jenny Bonnet, the frog-catching cross-dresser who is the catalyst for the transformation of the protagonist. Jenny is a real character in the mold of that old bee charmer, Idgie Threadgoode. There are witty asides scattered throughout the book, some aimed at the Irish (Donoghue's tribe, so it's OK). An interesting Afterword presents facts about the real crime that is fictionalized in the book.On the downside: There are too many cardboard characters - mostly one-dimensional villains just this side of Snideley Whiplash. The flashback and flash-forward structure promotes suspense but becomes cumbersome and a little confusing, even to this careful reader. The heroine, Blanche, was hard to relate to, partly because she is sexually wanton, mostly because she is shallow and a nit-wit about her own exploitation. Despite Donoghue's skill at depicting mother-child bonds, I had a hard time buying Blanche's newfound maternal devotion. Some of the writing in "Frog Music" disappoints. I will never forget the startlingly original similes that brought Donoghue's Slammerkin to life. In "Frog Music," we get "wrung out like a rag," "sick as a dog" and "limp as old cabbage." This might be a stylistic use of Old West vernacular but, after almost 400 pages with dozens of these cliches, it became grating and perhaps indicative of lazy writing. I wanted to holler, "Whoa, Nellie!" As much as I admire Donoghue's social consciousness, I got fatigued by the piling on of issues like child abuse, the sex trade, economic exploitation, and racial, sexual and gender bias - these on top of disease, jealousy, revenge, murder! Some of the scenes were so over-the-top they made me roll my eyes or laugh, and I'm pretty sure that was not the author's intention. "Frog Music" would have been more effective both pared down and toned down.Having admired Room: A Novel, Slammerkin, Hood: A Novel, Touchy Subjects and Astray by Donoghue, I will always give her the benefit of the doubt. I look forward to her next book.

Review "As parents of two young children and regular EFT users, we greatly appreciate the value and importance of Sharon's work. We wholeheartedly recommend her new book 'Heal Your Birth, Heal Your Life'." Hollie Holden and Robert Holden PhD, author of 'Life Loves You', 'Loveability' and 'Shift Happens' // "This book has been half a decade in the making. I first encountered Sharon King's work on Matrix Birth Reimprinting over five years ago when I was co-authoring the Matrix Reimprinting book with the creator of the technique, Karl Dawson. Sharon's work is remarkable in every way. She helped me heal my own birth story, and has helped countless other people around the world do the same. When I was involved in Matrix Reimprinting, I shared Sharon's work with people around the world and was always amazed at the difference that a Matrix Birth Reimprinting session could make to someone's life. I often saw radical transformations in one-hour sessions. I have been waiting for Sharon to bring this book out since then, and I know that it will make a profound impact on the birth trauma scene. What is unique about this book is not just the groundbreaking technique that Sharon has developed, but the way she grounds it in a plethora of scientific, and other, research. Whether you are a practitioner wanting to develop your skills, someone who has experienced a birth trauma, or you are about to give birth and want to make sure you create the best environment possible for your baby, this book is a groundbreaking resource that will ensure deep and lasting transformation in your own life, and the lives of those around you." After all we have all been born lol I have attended trainings and had sessions with Sharon before and she is brilliant, intuitive, and really caring, she really knows her stuff. Her book offers such awesome info on so many things, a wonderful technique, Matrix Birth Reimprinting, so much information about birth and the various issues that stem from it that can be reenacted throughout our lives. We do not treat babies as conscious beings that feel pain in the Western world and we need to be aware that how we come into this life imprints on everything we do from here on in. Sharon gives us the hope that that birth complications can be healed.

Imagine landing on earth our of the darkness of the womb. All of a sudden bright lights. Then they put silver nitrate in your eye which stings like hell. Then without any pain killer they cut part of your penis. Don't tell me birth is not traumatic. These memories tell us the world is an unsafe place which we belief till we pass. But it does not have to be that way and Sharon King can guide us to rewrite the memories to create a better sense of safety calmness and confidence in our lives.

I have worked in a large city Birthing Center for all of my nursing career where women's dreams of a perfect birth were shattered every day! I witnessed the disappointment on my patient's faces as we wheeled them to the operating room for their C-section after an epidural and a diagnosis of 'failure to progress.' I also felt their disappointment when their baby was immediately whisked away and put under the radiant warmer and ointment was applied to their eyes, thereby dashing any hope for eye to eye contact.Sharon King's book, Heal Your Birth-Heal Your Life, explains the impact of life altering events at the time of our birth (and our children's birth) that will cause a myriad of problems throughout our lifetime. Sharon goes on to demonstrate how these birth traumas can be released using her groundbreaking technique; Matrix Birth Reimprinting.I am grateful to have studied with Sharon in 2010 so that Matrix Birth Reimprinting could be introduced to my client's and other women throughout the United States. If you are a healthcare worker in women's health, an energy practitioner or someone seeking answers to their own traumatic birth experience, you owe it to yourself to read; Heal Your Birth-Heal Your Life, by Sharon King.

About the Author William Walker Atkinson was a leading figure in the late 19th Centurys New Thought Movement which is the foundation of many of our current New Age beliefs. William Walker Atkinson was a successful lawyer, but the stress and strain of his unenlightened pursuit of wealth and prestige resulted in a complete physical and mental breakdown, and ultimate financial disaster. For Walker, this was merely the darkest hour before the dawn: after discovering and mastering the principles of New Thought, he rebuilt his health and his career on a stronger and more stable foundation than he had ever conceived of before. He also began to write extensively, under several psuedonyms, including Theron Q. Dumont, Yogi Ramacharaka, and he was most likely all three of the Initiates credited with the writing of The Kybalion. It is possible his successful career and conservative credibility as a lawyer inspired him to use all of these various psuedonyms. Many of his books are still very popular today.... true wisdom never goes out of style, and William Walker Atkinson was a true master.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. more of a correction than a review By A Customer I have not read this book. The purpose of writing this is to inform prospective buyers that there's a slight error in the book description. Checking with Kessinger's catalog, this book contains 94 pages and not the stated 226 (check book dimensions).I did rate this book, however, based on another book I have by the same author and publisher. It is Practical Psychomancy and Crystal Gazing (1907) and at 93 pages it basically has the same dimensions as this book does.

The Age of Innocence (Xist Classics), by Edith Wharton

Amazon.com Review Somewhere in this book, Wharton observes that clever liars always come up with good stories to back up their fabrications, but that really clever liars don't bother to explain anything at all. This is the kind of insight that makes The Age of Innocence so indispensable. Wharton's story of the upper classes of Old New York, and Newland Archer's impossible love for the disgraced Countess Olenska, is a perfectly wrought book about an era when upper-class culture in this country was still a mixture of American and European extracts, and when "society" had rules as rigid as any in history.

From Library Journal This 19th-century classic, read by Andrew Sachs, is a tale of betrayal, gold, and love, encased in the elegant symmetrical structure so popular in traditional English fiction, featuring Marner, the weaver, who is framed for theft by his best friend and becomes a recluse, focusing his strong affections only on the store of golden coins he receives in payment for his work. As usual, Chivers has produced an excellent audio presentation of a literary masterpiece. Alas, in this day and age fewer and fewer readers not enrolled in literature classes actually read the works of what are frequently referred to as "dead white males" even if, as in this case, they were actually written by a woman. For this reason, this title is recommended for all academic but only larger public libraries.-I. Pour-El, Iowa State Univ., Ames Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Passion and the outsider By EA Solinas It was a glittering, sumptuous time when hypocrisy was expected, discreet infidelity tolerated, and unconventionality ostracized. That is the Gilded Age, and nobody knew its hypocrises better than Edith Wharton.... and nobody portrayed them as well. "The Age of Innocence" is a trip back in time to the stuffy upper crust of "old New York," taking us through one respectable man's hopeless love affair with a beautiful woman -- and the life he isn't brave enough to have.Newland Archer, of a wealthy old New York family, has become engaged to pretty, naive May Welland. But as he tries to get their wedding date moved up, he becomes acquainted with May's exotic cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska, who has returned home after dumping her cheating husband. At first, the two are just friends, but Newland becomes more and more entranced by the Countess' easy, free-spirited European charm. After Newland marries May, the attraction to the mysterious Countess and her free, unconventional life becomes even stronger. He starts to rebel in little ways, but he's still mired in a 100% conventional marriage, job and life. Will he become an outcast and go away with the beautiful countess, or will he stick with May and the safe, dull life that he has condemned in others? There's nothing too scandalous about "Age of Innocence" in a time when starlets acquire and discard boyfriends and husbands like old pantyhose -- it probably wasn't in the 1920s when it was first published. But then, this isn't a book about sexiness and steam -- it's part bittersweet romance, part social satire, and a look at what happens when human beings lose all spontaneity and passion.Part of this is due to Wharton's portrayal of New York in the 1870s -- opulent, cultured, pleasant, yet so tied up in tradition that few people in it are able to really open up and live. It's a haze of ballrooms, gardens, engagements, and careful social rituals that absolutely MUST be followed, even if they have no meaning. It's a place "where the real thing was never said or done or even thought."And Wharton writes distant, slightly mocking prose that outlines this sheltered little society. Her writing opens as slowly and beautifully as a rosebud, letting subtle subplots and powerful, hidden emotions drive the story. So don't be discouraged by the endless conversations about flowers, ballrooms, gloves and old family scandals that don't really matter anymore. In the middle of all this, Newland is a rather dull, intelligent young man who thinks he's unconventional. But he becomes more interesting as he struggles between his conscience and his longing for the Countess. And as "Age of Innocence" winds on, you gradually see that he doesn't truly love the Countess, but what she represents -- freedom from society and convention. The other two angles of this love triangle are May and Ellen. May is (suitably) pallid and rather dull, though she shows some different sides in the last few chapters. And Ellen is a magnificent character -- alluring, mysterious, but also bewildered by New York's hostility to her ways. And she's even more interesting when you realize that she isn't trying to rebel, but simply being herself."Age of Innocence" is a subtle look at life in Gilded Age New York, telling the story of a man desperately in love with a way of life he hasn't got the courage to pursue. Exquisite in its details, painful in its beauty.

A book that should be shared between mothers and daughters By A Customer I find it interesting and in some ways disturbing how few (openly at least) female viewpoints are expressed among the reviews of this book. Indeed, some of reviews make it appear that there are quite a few males out there who believe females are a sexual "tabula rasa" on which they can write their judgements of what constitutes morally appropriate behavior. This book must be understood not simply as art, but as a psychological statement, namely that sexuality exists within each of us from infancy on and parents and society deny that at their own risk. When I was the age of the girls in this book there was no one with the courage to come forward and openly depict the flowering of female sexuality. I lived with confusion and shame about my body and my desires, hurtful feelings that lasted until I was well into my adulthood.I came across this book in a store one day while looking for something else. I spotted the title and I vaguely remembered a news story about some people wanting to ban it, so I thought I would look at it out of curiosity. The images in it were so beautiful I almost started to cry right there, it was as though I found vindication for the very core of my being. After taking it home, I decided to share it with my nine-year old daughter with whom I had just recently had "The Talk". It was wonderful being able to show her how her body would change and how she would be beautiful even as she changed from a girl into a woman. It is true there are already books out there that are supposed to address the issue, but so often they take a clinical approach that is scary in its own right. The artistry of this book, combined with the photographer's selection of natural-looking girls (you will not find made-up or coiffed girls in the pages of this book), will, in my opinion, help any girl appreciate her changing body.Mothers, share this book with your daughters, it will help make so clear the many changes they are going through and how they are positive. No girl should ever have to feel shame of her own body and this book is an important step.

By Mary Whipple Newland Archer, the protagonist of this ironically entitled novel set in the late nineteenth century, is a proper New York gentleman, and part of a society which adheres to strict social codes, subordinating all aspects of life to doing what is expected, which is synonymous with doing what it right. As the author remarks early in the novel, "Few things were more awful than an offense against Taste." Newland meets and marries May Welland, an unimaginative, shallow young woman whose upbringing has made her the perfect, inoffensive wife, one who knows how to behave and how to adhere to the "rules" of the society in which they live. When Newland is reintroduced to May's cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska, who has left her husband in Europe and now wants a divorce, he finds himself utterly captivated by her independence and her willingness to risk all, socially, by flouting convention. Both Ellen and Newland are products of their upbringing and their culture, however, and they resist their feelings because of their separate social obligations. Various meetings between them suggest that their feelings are far stronger than what is obvious on the surface, and the question of whether they will finally state the obvious or act on their feelings constitutes the plot.Wharton creates an exceptionally realistic picture of New York in the post-Civil War era, a time in which aristocrats of inherited wealth found themselves competing socially with parvenus. Her ability to show the conflict between a person's need for social acceptance and the desire for personal freedom is striking. As the various characters make their peace with their decisions--either to challenge or yield to social dictates--the novel achieves an unusual dramatic tension, subtle because of its lack of direct confrontation and powerful in its effects on individual destinies. This is, in fact, less an "age of innocence" than it is an age of social manipulation.Wharton herself manipulates the reader--some of her best dialogues and scenes are those the characters never actually have--conversations that they imagine, confrontations which they never allow themselves to have, and resolutions which happen through inaction rather than through decision-making. Filled with acute social observations, the novel shows individuals convincing themselves that obeying social dictates is the right thing to do. Though the novel sometimes seems claustrophobic due to its limitations on action, Age of Innocence brilliantly captures the age and attitudes of the era. Mary Whipple

I could picture the law office and the courtroom, even had a good visual of the characters. Kelly is very detailed in his descriptions of the life struggles that Jack Riley had and how it impacted his decisions and reactions to events. I had trouble putting the book down, so I didn't. I had to know how it ended. I look forward to more from this author.

Kelly's legal experience is evident throughout, and coupled with the deeply-developed characters and intricate plot, Hammer of Justice is sure to deliver.

Hammer of Justice was a great way for me to break away from that awful routine and truly get excited about reading again. From the first page, I was glued to the book. Reading in bed usually is a means to a quick sleep, not with Hammer of Justice, finished reading that night at 2:30 AM.Well past lights out. Characters seemingly pulled from my own town onto Kelly's pages. Drugs, drinking, crime, racial tension, and a little love! Can't wait for his next book.
