By Marcellus Nancy This is a wonderful novel of love and self-reflection -- the kind of reflection that's universal, that lives in the minds of each of us as we go through the passing days of our own lives. As I read Sarah Layden's first novel, I couldn't help but think of the title of a 1949 Humphrey Bogart movie, "Knock on Any Door." Because if you did knock on any door you'd find everyone experiencing the same kind of love, doubt, mistrust, confusion and at times self-hatred that the protagonist of this novel experiences. That's what makes this a great book -- its universality. We all recognize ourselves in it. And although our lives can be complicated by others -- even by those we love -- it is only through them that we come to know ourselves. As Sarah Layden, in one passage, writes: "Why else do we seek the company of strangers, but for a foothold, a boost up to the window of our own lives?" Indeed.
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable, Quality Fiction By Frankie French This is one of those rare, well-written books that is also an entertaining read. Main character Carey re-lives her time in Mexico, which includes the disappearance of mysterious boyfriend Ben, as she deals with the fallout of that event in the present. The unraveling mystery is compelling, but the characters and the expertly-rendered settings are what have made this read stay with me. I have to say, I enjoyed this novel much more than The Girl on The Train. Carey, though flawed, and Ben, criminal!, thoroughly appealed to me. I was certainly turning pages and staying up a little later to squeeze in just a bit more reading time. Giving a few for Mother's Day gifts.

I live in Indianapolis, and so it was so "trippy" ;) to recognize the architecture and lore that bursts, accurately, from these pages. And then to be transported back and forth between my home and other countries, other stories, other decades.This book, particularly chapter 13, is beautifully written.
